Calamity <3

Though I have to say, I wasn't as hyped about this book as I have been for literally every other Brandon book. In fact, this is the first Brandon book I actually legitimately forgot to get the eBook of at midnight (I did it the next morning). And I am pretty sure it is because he's had so many released in such a short period of time. I think I need at least a month to recharge between his books :)

I'm about of a third of the way through Deadhouse Gates( Wooohooo! Finally started :D )

Aaaaaand, wow. That got a lot darker. Does the rest of the series continue at about this level of violence and adult content?

I'm actually holding off on Calamity although my pre-order was already here. I planned on rereadding Firefight first but got sidetracked by The Three Body Problem who's is pretty good. Luckily I'm almost done with that.

Michael Creighton.  All. (Jurassic Park, Sphere, Andromeda Strain, etc.)

Except NEXT. That one is horrid, I stopped a couple chapters in.

Blasphemy! NEXT is good! Not his most polished, but it does educate you and make you think!

There's a few of his I haven't read yet... I should rectify that this year!

As far as whether Malazan maintains that level of violence and adult content, you'll want to finish Deadhouse Gates before you ask that question again ;)

Prey is my favorite, easily. Next is mostly bad, I agree, but not as bad as Timeline. Some of his thrillers like Airframe are good, if not really my cup of tea.

Aside from Jurrasic Park, were any of the film adaptations good actually? I watched Andromeda Strain, and good luck, it was awful. I feel like Prey or The Terminal Man could be good.

Yeah, I forgot it was out, myself, until I saw a Tor article or something about it in my Facebook newsfeed. But, of course, I immediately snatched up the ebook and am reading it.

For me, it's not that too many books are being released; it's that I really care primarily about the Cosmere--Stormlight Archive more than the rest. Sanderson's non-Cosmere books are always engaging, but they're not something I look forward to specifically.

Could you be a bit specific? DG is pretty violent throughout, yes, the overall tone of Malazan is pretty dark

I plowed through all of Calamity today... Have to say, I'm very pleased. I felt like it was a suitably awesome ending to one of my favorite series.

At last, Bands of Mourning is mine! I will then set aside Neil Gaiman's "Trigger warning" for some time. It as very good book and I look forward to finish it, but a new Sanderson always takes priority

I've noticed that I am starting to refer to Brandon's endings as "appropriate" or "suitable" more and more often. They just feel right. Elantris and The Final Empire had good endings. Calamity and The Hero of Ages had the right endings. It's a good sign of growth, I think.

Hero of Ages has my favorite ending of all of his books. I didn't like Elantris' as much.

The one I disliked the most even though it's one of my favorite Sanderson books was Warbreaker. It felt like book one of a trilogy. I know there is supposed to be a sequel but with as many years of separation there will be of felt like it took away from my overall enjoyment.

Hero of Ages by far the best ending.

Same here. That was just beautiful.

Next up on my list is book 2 in a series by James C Riley called Story Thieves about two kids who have adventures jumping in and out of books, which they can do because one of them is half fictional. It's geared toward a middle-grade audience, but the first book was funny and clever and surprising in all the right ways, so I'm eager to dive into the second one.

Finish Elantris about a week ago. Really liked. Best way to describe it without spoilers is a one book version of Mistborn with a lot less characters and a different magic.

Finished Assassin's apprentice this morning. Liked it more than I thought based on some of the online reviews. Loved the characters and the mental aspect of the magic. I'll definitely read the other two books in the series.

About 85% done with Theft of Swords. A lot less magic and a lot more medieval than I usually go for but it's been a great read. I'll read the other two books in the series.

Felt good to like three in a row coming off The Name of the Wind and The Black Prism both of which were lacking and I didn't continue either series.

Rayse, if you like Assassin's Apprentice, you should be aware that there is more to the series than the two other books of the trilogy. There are two more Fitz trilogies (one of which still has one book yet to be released), and I would read The Liveship Traders before the second Fitz trilogy. There's also the Dragonkeepers series, but I didn't even finish the first of the four books. I found it boring.
