Hello, fellow Malazan fan. I'm reading Memories of Ice currently. Is your title the name of a certain god, then?

Edit: Autocorrect, you can climb back into whatever pit spawned you.

Who's your favorite character? (Aside from Hood)

Yep. The username is inspired by Hood. My favourite character, aside from Hood, is Quick Ben, because he is intelligent (and displays somewhat normal behaviour which others of his kind, except Tehol I think fail to do so), powerful, and his friendship with Kalam is second-best (the best being Gesler and Stormy).

Memories of Ice is my favourite book in this series.

Ah!! Now all that remains is The Crippled God. And then ICE's books. I should finish the Malazan Empire books, before Dancer's Lament is released.

Was watching an interview with Brandon and he recommended Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay.  Standalone fantasy novel.  I am a little more than halfway through and it is great!

that's my favorite of Kay's books that I have read, though I do like The Lions of Al-Rassan a lot as well.

unrelated to that: I am about 200 pages from the end of Toll the Hounds, and I have somewhat stalled. given that I have already read something like 6000 pages worth of this series in the past 2-3 months, I'm honestly kind of surprised I didn't get distracted sooner than this. still, I've got Christmas travels coming up, so I will probably have ample time for more reading then.

I started The Traitor Baru Cormorant today. I've heard a lot of good stuff about it. It's pretty good, but it's one of those fantasy books that is only technically fantasy because it takes place in a world that is clearly not our own. No magic or anything. It reminds me a little of The Dagger and the Coin, in that the protagonist is a numbers person. The evil empire in it is extremely evil. I'm pretty sure the story is headed for straight-up tragedy. Oh, well.

I'm about halfway through the Lions of Al-Rassan, now that you mention it. I saw Kasimir and someone discussing it and Tigana and decided to read it. I'm really enjoying so far.

I've started Gardens of the Moon for the...third? time. I'm trying to keep my pace pretty slow so that I don't get as lost and confused as I did originally, and I'm actually enjoying it this time around. It's still not very cohesive feeling, but it is readable right now so maybe I'll finally break through and be able to read the rest of the series.

Most of the action happens in those 200 pages. Hurry, read it. You won't regret it.

*You won't regret most of it

Seriously a pretty big spoiler.

I very much regret having read a death scene that involved a certain minor demon, a big-feeted man, a cane and Hood's influence.

Oh, I'm sure of that. problem is distraction. so far I had been able to prevent myself getting distracted by anything else (for the most part), until recently. I'll get back to it soon, probably today in fact, since I had to take the day off of work anyway.

I only attempted Gardens of the Moon once. I made it about 400 pages, but I finally just gave up because I still had very little idea what was going on and didn't like any of the characters. I've been meaning to give it another try because I understand that the series is really good, but I just haven't ever gotten around to it.

Most people will tell you to go ahead and skip it. It's not so terribly important to the plot of the next few books, you can just read Deadhouse Gates and find out much sooner of the series is for you.

I might just do that. I'm gonna still give Gardens another chance, though.

I just finished The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Geez. It was a good book, but... I don't know. It's like 1984 in a magic-less high fantasy setting.

I honestly don't know whether to recommend it or not.

I tried Gardens of the Moon twice now and I couldn't finish it. The characters just aren't interesting... and I need characters to like a story. I may try it again some other time when I feel like it.

I didn't think that the characters were necessarily not interesting. I just really didn't like them. I think that was the major problem, for me. No matter who the chapter focused on, I just didn't care to hear anything about what that piece of @#$% was doing. Maybe that's just about the same as them not being interesting, but it seemed like there was interesting stuff about them. I just hated them too much to want to find any of it out.

Some things to know about GOTM. It was written atleast 10 yrs before it was published and it was written as a movie script so it's not as polished as what you'd normally expect in a book. He soared as a writer from bk 2 on.

If you want to get into the series, you can start with book 2. But sooner or later, I say sooner, immediately after book 2, you should read book 1. Book 3 takes off, where book 1 ended. Book 2 (DD) is infinite times better than 1, so it will be a good start.

As for me, I am now at book 10, The Crippled God. The end is coming. The Fokrul Assail are so powerful. Just too much powerful. I wonder how will the allies face them. Hell, given their power, they can easily end the battle in a few seconds. SO much is coming, its exciting.

I'm reading A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab right now. It's been a pleasant ride so far. I might actually get the sequel that'll be out in February.

I totally forgot that, Toll The Hounds has an epic 3 page battle between Kruppe and Iskaral Pust.

I remember reading a lot of positive stuff about that when it first came out, and I read it shortly thereafter. It was pretty good, as I recall, but I don't think I liked it quite as much as the reviews said I should. I'll probably still read the sequel.

I just finished reading Mythwalker (well, as much of it as exists), and it was interesting to see the roots of various books contained therein. It's referred to as Warbreaker Prime, but there is a lot that made it into Mistborn and Stormlight in there, too.

Now, I'm on to The Lies of Locke Lamora, which I have been intending to read for a while. I'm only a few pages in, so I don't know how I like it yet.

"epic"

but yea, Kruppe is one of my favorites (along with Tehol and Bugg)
