Dunkum he/him Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Yea, just finished Shadows of Self, but I basically had to stop myself from reading through the night these past few days in order to be functional in the mornings.
Left he/him Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Bought Shadows of Self yesterday, finished reading at around 11:20 last night. I started reading after dinner when I knew I'd be able to read straight for long enough. Still absorbing the implications of the epilogue. Trying to decide whether to read His Majesty's Dragon or a Modesitt next. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Shadows of Self. Just finished Dragon Reborn.
Orlion Blight he/him Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Well, I irresponsibly ordered it and then they irresponsibly gave it to me early, but that is pretty much the same thing Nah, the bookstore can get fined you could just claim ignorance! Mwahaha! The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas 1
nicocoberru she/her Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 (edited) Just finished The Hollow Boy by Jonathan Stroud. No. I am most definately NOT okay. Started to read Kingkiller Chronicles. I was still in chapter one before I remember that I have exams this week and have to stop reading too much. Oh well, next time then. Also tried reading a few chapters of The Song of Achilles before I lost the drive to read. I also got Magnus Chase. Not sure if I should read it. Edited October 10, 2015 by nicocoberru
Guest Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Unlike most people, I am not reading Shadow of Self... Instead, I have started reading Jim Butcher which should bring me to Christmas time, though I am getting through that first book rather quickly. I'll get to Shadow of Self, eventually.
Iarvos Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I'm reading Will Wight's Of Darkness and Dawn. Will is a self-published author that I stumbled across lately who reminds me of a poorly edited version of Brandon Sanderson - which to me is still high praise. His Travelers Gate series is pretty good story telling. . .
nicocoberru she/her Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) Just finished The Song of Achilles. It was okay. Amd fast. I think I read it in just three hours? I like it. Not fond of Achilles, he was a /meh/ character for me, but I do love Briseis and cried like a baby when she died. Phyrrus is just creepy, and I pity Achilles' wife, the princess of Sycros. The story made me remember just how messed up life was in ancient Greece. Or at least, it was for the women. Not recommended for adventure/action lovers. It's a pure romance between Achilles and Patroclus (they were "bestfriends" in the myths) and the story sometimes draaaaaags on. But the descriptions are gorgeous and I love those. Hood he/him Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 I've only got about a hundred pages left in Uprooted. It's been good, not exactly what I was expecting, but good. Reminds me a lot of several Ghibli films, especially Howl's Moving Castle. I started Uprooted today. Read upto page 80. I think it is a good novel, but not like Sanderson's. I mean, the magic is pretty straightforward. Having read Sanderson, and Erikson, so much, I think my expectations have been a little high. I found the protagonist, a little irritating, but that is understood. She's quite immature early in the novel. The dragon, however, is my favourite character.
StormingTexan he/him Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 ^^ I felt the same about Uprooted Shadows of Self. Just finished Dragon Reborn. Me too! I am just 5 days behind you. Dragon Reborn has been my favorite WoT book so far. I finally got to see what everyone likes about Mat his POV was pretty minimal up until this book. Jumping right in to The Shadow Rising next. Shadows of Self... Well I wont say too much here because we have a whole forum for that but it was a lot more than I was expecting. I thought another lighthearted fun read like AoL and Brandon slapped me in the face with something entirely opposite (well it was still fun). Maybe I'm just high on the Sanderson Kool-Aide but I thought it was Amazing. Any other author I would now be depressed waiting for the next installment but nope just a few months then BoM and if that were not good enough FREAKIN CALAMITY right after that!
Hood he/him Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Shadows of self will be released here on November 4. But the great thing is that it won't be expensive. Thanks amazon.in Earlier, I remember Brandon's previous works being very expensive, at around Rs. 1100. You would have to wait an awful lot of time just so that the price got right. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Finished Shadows of Self. Onto The Shadow Rising.
nicocoberru she/her Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Semester breaks finally here. Now of to read Kingkiller Chronicles.
Dunkum he/him Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 working my way through Malazan Book of the Fallen. ~2/3 of the way through book 2 right now. this may take some time.
Briar King Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 working my way through Malazan Book of the Fallen. ~2/3 of the way through book 2 right now. this may take some time. And it's completely worth it. Such an epic series
Argent he/him Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Okay, it's been about a week since I finished Shadows of Self, and I think I am finally ready to jump back into Pratchett. Thud! specifically. I think I'll finish the City Watch subseries and then maybe give Jim Butcher's The Aeronaut's Windlass.
Left he/him Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 I finished His Majesty's Dragon and started its sequel. I also finished Moving Pictures, so I'll probably do either Pyramids or the Hogfather next as I bought those on Audible a while ago.
Briar King Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I'm reading Outlander 1 till I can get in town to pick up Shadows.
Briar King Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 After a few days now not getting to store I think I'm just going to wait on Shadow till Bands hits in Jan then I can do em both back to back. I'm way to into Outlander 1 now to stop. It's great.
Hood he/him Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Reading Magician's Gambit by David Eddings. Gotta love Silk !! Otherwise, the series is quite satisfying. It was made more than 25 years ago, after all. But one thing constantly nags my mind. Why do Tolkien-esque fantasy shows west as all goody goody, and the east as "so evil, that I dare not go there" ?
Argent he/him Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Is it all of them? I can think of a few, but I don't know about all, or even most. But if so, it could be an artifact of Western-centric thinking, I think. Not necessarily conscious. The West is largely ignorant of the East, so we kind of start associating the strange with it.
Left he/him Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 (edited) Finished Throne of Jade this afternoon. I really enjoyed it, although the sailor's cussing did get out of hand once. It was a one time thing, that didn't feel out of place at all in the setting, but if the later books get worse than I'll stop reading the series. I picked up The Dirty Streets of Heaven by Tad Williams at the library the other day. I've tried several of Tad's series, and aside from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn I haven't come close to even finishing one. I did love that trilogy, but I don't have high expectations for Bobby Dollar. Briar King Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I liked Bobby Dollar 1 a lot. It's no Dresden yet it's fun

This was my reaction too. I can only think of 2 examples of this (LoTR and the Belgariad/Mallorean books mentioned in the OP) offhand, so I'm not sure I'd say it is quite a pattern, but it could be. if so, I would assume it is probably what you suggest. just a sort of an unconcious ignorance thing

But I wanted to add that this subconcious thinking is the result of hundreds and hundreds of years of geographical, historical and political factors affecting the way of thinking of the West. I could list hundreds and hundreds of examples. So I think this way of thinking is simply sometimes too difficult to avoid and it just finds it way into novels because of that.
