Could the next great fantasy screen franchise be here? Apple TV believes so.

The streaming giant has closed what has been described as an unprecedented deal to land the rights to the Cosmere books, the fictional literary universe by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson.

The first titles being eyed for adaptation are the Mistborn series, for features, and The Stormlight Archive series, for television.

The latter already has producers involved: Blue Marble, run by former WME agent Theresa Kang, is attached to executive produce The Stormlight Archive television adaptation.

Cool. Hopefully Brandon stops it from ending up like the Wheel of Time.

Nice! Let's hope it turns out good (if they do it)

Yeah, not the place for my thoughts on this - so I'll just say I have no hope and it doesn't really matter because it is very unlikely I'll be able experience them anyway.

Huh, this might actually get me past my dislike of apple.

Well, not likely. I'm not too optimistic, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Not optimistic that it'll happen or be good? Or both?

That it will be good mostly. I mean when was the last good big budget Sci-fi/fantasy? The sonic films are the only things that come to mind.

Rings of Power, Wheel of time, Game of Thrones, Star Wars etc etc.

I mean Brandon recognizes that those were terrible, but that doesn't mean it will avoid all of those problems.

Not for discussion - because politics and site policy do not mix. For context <rant-lite>

Spoiler

Apple is in my top-three evil corporations I will never willingly give my money to. I do not like their policies or their business model and I have no faith they can do something like this accessible to the fan-base, at large.

We can PM if you want more thoughts, but here is not the place for that larger discussion.

The deal is rare one, coming after a competitive situation which saw Sanderson meet with most of the studio heads in town. It gives the author rarefied control over the screen translations, according to sources. Sanderson will be the architect of the universe; will write, produce and consult; and will have approvals. That’s a level of involvement that not even J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin enjoys.

This quote from the article makes me optimistic.

I am going to remain hopefull but guarded. Not giving Apple my money till there is something Sanderwatchable. The note of his retaining creative control inspires confidence. Still can't imagine Stormlight being anything but animated, but we will see. Perhaps there will be something to watch in five years?

That's certainly encouraging, but I don't think I'll believe it will be good until I cam see it for myself.

I'm sure it'll be good.

My main question is how will this affect the forums. How will our culture survive a large influx of new members?

I've been discussing this with @Bird Furious and @A Silvereye in Silverlight

We aren't sure, but are worried.

I mean, it would be a long way off till we have to worry about that.

I don't think we need to worry about it. Make a subforum for the TV fans and lock them away there.

Apple budget plus Brandon maintaining control is a big win. Still hard to see how these get adapted IRL, but I’m more excited now than I would’ve been with many other studios / arrangements.

Hey, all! News has broken. Rather than post on all the threads, I figured I would do a new post here with some info and thoughts.

In May I flew to Hollywood to start looking for a new partner on the Cosmere. This is something I've done before, but this time it was different. I'd been off the market for many years, working with Epic and my friends there.

That means this was my first time being in Hollywood with my Cosmere rights since...oh, 2016?

This time, I got to meet the real decision makers. Not just producers or low level executives. And this led to some really tough choices. I got the red carpet treatment, and liked everyone I met.

The decision to pick Apple was due to two factors. First, the level of approvals and control. Apple wants to be a true partner with me, and they feel like they really get what I want to do. Second, their track record. Apple does fewer things, but with higher quality, than some other studios. I find virtually every thing of theirs I watch is excellent and creator driven.

Join me for a livestream on Friday, probably 6pm mountain. I'll talk more then. But I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right.

I promise not to get too distracted to do books. However, if I want this done right, I need to give some real attention and heart to it now.

Brandon

so livestream on Friday at 6pm MST

I doubt the majority of people that watch the TV show will come here. The majority of people that read the books certainly don't. It would probably be more prevalent on discord, but I'm not that afraid of culture change. I don't think it would dramatically change the culture to add more people anyway, nor do I think it would necessarily be a bad thing. The culture changed from the time I joined to now, and while I miss the old culture, I don't dislike this one.

What was the old Shard culture like compared to now?

You were there.

You've been here for two years more than he has.

Personally I liked the culture best around 2021-2023 that was golden era 17th Shard right there.

it wasn't very different, it was mostly just different people that I interacted with differently, so it's mostly my perception that changed. and this is, of course, primarily in TLT and other forum games things. The cosmere Q&A or cosmere discussion doesn't seem to have had much of, if any, culture shift.

As an example of culture shift, TLT has shifted several times, even while I've been here (but I assume several more than even that). When I first joined, it was very chaotic, pretty much the game where you tell a story and each person says one sentence. Then, some plot got added, but it was still somewhat chaotic. Random crap happened. Then, it got much more plot heavy, with long, many-paragraphed posts (Thaid's post on page 2500 is a good example), then after Thaid left and some others joined, posts got shorter and happened much more frequently (I wasn't able to keep up, which is a major reason I don't post on TLT much anymore), and I'm sure there have been small changes since then. each "culture" is similar to the ones before and after it, and some are tangentially related to older "cultures", but some don't seem to connect at all. All that happened in 2-3 years, so while it can change a lot, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

shhh.

I like to pretend I'm a wise old man and people forget they can check when I joined
