Rhyme didn't know what to do. She looked at Lati for guidance.

"Jidah... what makes you happy?"

Lati looked around for a pretty rock.

"She needs time, I think," Rhyme said.

"Thirty-one now!" Rhyme cheered. "How exciting. Will you be reincarnated after you die or is this your last life?"

"My only life, actually," Sigismund said. "But I've lived on a lot longer than anyone else. Watch this." He took the watch, and rewound it backwards, until it said: 100 years, 0 months, 0 days, 0 minutes, 0 seconds. He laughed.

"And that is my secret to living 10,000 years. Admittedly, I did skip through a lot of that time because I was bored, so perhaps two or three thousand years is a more accurate measure. The thing is, all these glitches... they don't listen to what my clock says. They are the only things that can kill me outside of the clock running out. And it's not like I can skip through them either, because I don't know if this world will be around in the future, and skipping a few years into the future is not a risk I'd be willing to take to find out."

Lati found a pretty one.

She picked it up and brought it to Jidah.

"Here! I got you something!"

It sizzled and smoke at her touch.

She stared at it, then blinked.

"...for me?"

"Makes me..." She frowned down at the stone Lati offered her. "Happy... happy is for mortals..."

"Mhm!" she hummed happily.

"For you!"

Tears welled up in her eyes, and she took the rock. "Thank you, Lati," she whispered, clutching it tightly.

I can't remember the last time someone's given me something...

A person suddenly sprinted into the group, stumbling to a halt in front of Jidah and the people around her. They had olive skin and medium-length straight dark hair, and wore a simple, loose, light-colored shirt and leggings. They looked afraid, mouth open like they wanted to speak but couldn't find words.

They flinched when she talked. "Hello..."

They had an uncanny appearance. It was hard to pin down a gender or age, though they seemed like an adult, anywhere from twenty to thirty. Their skin seemed too smooth, features too perfect. It was all a little unnatural.

She giggled.

"Okay, now your turn!"
