HA. no.

I have no job currently and I'm in a city where I have little support

My father is currently trying to convince me to go into a skilled trade, even though I don't really want to. He probably has the best idea because he knows me well and has travelled much of the same path. He dropped out of school, joined the military, became an electrician and an architectural draughter, went back to school, got a Bachelor's in Engineering technology, and then a Master's in Building Science, and became a science and tech teacher.

I eventually want to get a Master's in Astrophysics.

I've mostly given up on university for now. I need to raise my high school grades, and I need a job.

That sucks, I'm sorry

I don't have much to say tbh.

Wdym abt the HS grades?

I'd say don't do anything you don't want to, life-wise, except when it comes to like a job you need to survive or something like that, yk?

Like, don't let him choose your career/life path.

But if he's offering good advice then consider it.

I don't know everything so I can't give the best stuff

idk

I did NOT do well in school. I had the potential to get the Governor General's Academic Medal (do the best in my high school), but I wasted my potential and wasted my time.

Well, we can't undo the past and we shouldn't... dwell on how we messed up, you know?

Like... yeah.

Also, are you sure you can't go to Uni?

A Red Seal Trade is a trade that can be done anywhere in Canada, regardless of province or territory.

I guess my plan is to learn a trade, which should take about 5 years. I get income during that. I'd also be taking high School upgrading courses. I'd then apply to uni, get a bachelor's in physics and get a master's in astrophysics. I'd be about 30 when I finish that. The Canadian Space Agency should have expanded enough by that time that I can work for them. If not, I'm sure the Canadian Armed Forces (probably the Royal Canadian Air Force) and/or the Department of National Defence would find an astrophysics major quite useful. If not, there's a lot of research being done in my hometown.

Yup. Very sure. My grades are too low.

As Verdance said, it's good you have a plan.

Have you looked into colleges rather than uni's? (Like community colleges or smth). If you haven't, maybe research those a bit. If you have.. idk.

The job market is horrible for people who don't have post-secondary in Canada. About 10% of Canadians have trades, about 25% have college and about 39% have university. That's 74% of the population with post-secondary training.

Oh! I forgot terminology is different in America. University is where you get a bachelor's, a master's, or a PhD. College is where you get a certificate, a diploma, or a bachelor's.

Who says I'm in America...

Also, won't they accept u even with low grades? (I'm just relying on Google searches lol...)

(The colleges)

Maybe that's the upgrading, idk

Red seal requires like, 10,000 hours of work though, and it's internationally recognized. It's something you spend a significant portion of your life working towards

the job market is kinda horrible in Canada altogether if I'm being honest but yes not having a post secondary makes the odds much worse

I assume everyone here is American unless otherwise stated lol. You also used the wording 'community college', which is an American term.

A college did accept me, but I failed out. I was in a Vet Assistant program. I've decided I'm not ready for college/uni just yet.

From what ive heard about how difficult it is to live in canada, i have no idea why people still choose to exist there

america is also getting there

Yup, but it pays well, and I need time to mature and figure myself out. My father is a smart man, and this is what he's recommending.

I'll spend about 5 years on the apprenticeship. It's good to have as a fallback career.

Because it's nice here. There's quite a few good sides to Canada.

it's hard to not sound American, sigh..

especially when I don't always know which words/phrases are exclusively american or not

also I looked at the wikipedia and it used the term community college so i thought canada called it that too 😭

even tho google/reddit said it's just called colleges

I'd choose canada over america any day

tho tbh imo no place is gonna be good.

there's a lot of benefits to living in canada compared to other places. And besides, it's not necessarily easy to live in many places nowadays. I feel safe in Canada. I don't know if I can say the same about other places (including the US).

A lot of people hate on trades but the reality is that trades is very respectable work. If you're somewhat interested in trades even having a year of work experience will still be massively helpful in the future when you look for other jobs

The job market everywhere is bad (just Canada is more educated in general, so it's hard for someone with no post-secondary), housing is starting to be built, crime is better around here than in America, taxes are higher, but the government helps (or at least tries to) more.
