“Fusion and fission convert mass to energy as well, just less of it. Antimatter is not especially helpful for power generation, because it is so hard to find.”

“Yes. I think our first priority will be dissipating or harnessing the teleportation energy, because otherwise the people running the Machine will think of somewhere worse than a volcano to drop us in. The yellow energy is incredibly energy dense; maybe we will need antimatter after all. I haven’t had much time for experiments, but the yellow energy is energy dense enough to cause energy retention crystals to explode, and it seems to teleport only things on our person.”

"Interesting. I sincerely doubt that it is alike with one of the magic stones from my world, as it was most likely created on another. Finding a way to harness the power could be incredibly useful, as you could move as you please through worlds."

“Well yes, we will need to figure how to use it to get home, but I think my goal here is merely to make it harder to teleport us by using the energy that would power the teleportation for other things. Can you interact with the power inside of us at all?”

Nick turns to everyone, making sure they’re all listening, so he doesn’t miss any potentially game changing ideas. “Ok, we’ve got one teleportation cycle before the safehouse, and for once we’re not being attacked. I say we create a set of experiments to see if we can avert, alter, or gain power from the teleportation, so we can use our resources from the safehouse to exploit that.” He paces, trying to think. “We should definitely try simply touching or crushing the energy. Maybe we can get a current if we touch it with wires… and teleporting away might help. What else should we do?”

Tenth grunted, dimly remembering something Third had told him. “My teleportation… it reacts to other energies… perhaps there is something I haven’t noticed. Before, it was a well documented fact that I could teleport 4.37 F”UMF. A record, for my people. I believe it means I teleport 4.37 feet standing still.”

Tenth hesitated. "I'm not sure what it means, exactly. But perhaps we can test it. Different scenarios. I... I'm not very good at this Giant discipline."

"Alas, I have no stores of food in my Pocket. I have long since forgone the need for sustenance, though, I should most likely begin to take some stores of rations along with me, for the few friends I have do still need food."

The rest of the shrub begins to shrivel, but the fruit that it grows looks delicious.

We use this teleportation to conquer other planets. I... I was the general. The Tenth of the Giants, for that is what we called ourselves. The Giants, overshadowing the lives of our citizens."

Nick listens, fascinated. “Has anyone tried to combine AI and quantum computing? Someone in the IISC tried, and it achieved super-intelligence and what as far as we can tell is true sentience. And the other planets? What are they like, and why did you have to conquer them?”

Tenth hesitated. "Why..." He frowned. The last question had never occurred to him. Why were they conquerors? He decided to ignore it. "We have tried combining them, and it has been successful. However, we do not have abundant quantum computing or AI, so the breakthrough is slightly contained. A central computer. This," he gestured to a button, speaker and microphone on the rifle, "was supposed to receive and send messages from and to the central AI. It's been quiet since I travelled here, though.
