The flame grew hotter, then began to spread along the man's hands, to Alex's, and up his arms. The room filled with the scent of burning flesh.

Alex gritted his teeth, but the fire didn’t seem to do as much damage as it should. Alex threw the man out of the open door and slammed it. Then he rolled around in the floor until he had put out the fire.

The man calmly opened the door moments later. The fire was gone, and he was undamaged. He tapped his cane on the ground again, and it shifted to a violet color. "Sleep." Alex saw his vision go black, and he entered a strange dream.

Up to you what it is, unless you want me to come up it, but I figure you can make it symbolic for yourself better than I could. It is lucid, though.

Alex had collapsed, unconscious. The burns on his arms began to mend as the man spoke to Dilsha again. "Come with me."

"You are clearly antagonizing this fine establishment, I won't allow you to kidnap it's owner."

Will drew his sword.

"Hardly. Before I was attacked, I was going to provide this." He took a small piece of paper, adorned with a familiar seal. "A contract with the king. I am to find the Decayer of the palace, and bring them to face justice."

Rot.

"That decaying old man . . ." Will muttered, "He just can't stop meddling, can he?"

He kept his sword pointed at the man, but was uncertain. He could get arrested, if this went too far, and that would delay his quest. But it's not as if  he could just walk away. This woman knew things she shouldn't.

Alex dreamt of the perfect world. One where he was unimportant. Well, unimportant to most. He had his few friends, and that was enough. Dil wasn’t there, for some reason. Other than that, everything was perfect. But perfect wasn’t enough, he had to make sure Dil was ok. He looked, and in the distance he saw a rotting castle. He ran to it, the journey taking hours. Somehow, he knew Dil was there. He arrived, and saw that the castle had almost entirely Decayed. In the center was Dil, grinning. What had she done? He stepped towards her, then hesitated. This was Dil. She wouldn’t have done this without a reason. He had to trust her. Even if she’d never trusted him, never with anything important. It was better to be used then to be discarded. He reached towards her, then everything went black.

"Correct." Will eyed the man with the staff, thinking of the flames he had shot at Alex. "You're far more likely to burn that way, so you must be cautious."

"I'm not just going around setting people on fire. I am here for a specific purpose. If you would please lower your sword so I may do that?"

He did lower his sword, but he didn't re-sheath it. "I have business with the barkeep as well, what proof do you have that she is the criminal you seek?"

He tapped his cane once more, and it return to fiery white. A thread of light sprung from it, directly to Dilsha. "Traces. A connection that remains between her and the Decay spirit in the palace."

"Just because there's a connection between her and the Decay, doesn't mean she started it. I already have reason to believe she lived in the area a short time ago, perhaps she was just near when the spell started, and thus gained a connection with it."

“Do you need anything?” Dilsha asked. “A drink, maybe?”

Dilsha stuck her tongue out at him. Peasant relationships were so interesting!

Dilsha raised an eyebrow at the gold bar. That was almost half as much as her daily allowance back home. “Of course, uh, your highness.” She almost giggled, but years of diplomacy lessons held it in. Her. Calling someone “your highness”. The novelty was wonderful. “Would you like a meal first, a drink maybe?”

"Do you need something? Help maybe?"

Dilsha raised an eyebrow at his magic. "No." Then she hurled her knife at the man, muttering a few words under her breath, and it grazed his arm. "Feast," she said, and suddenly the man felt as if he were being consumed. Knowing that it wouldn't last long on whatever this person was, she turn and ran into the kitchen, then out the back door and into an alley.

Strangely enough, though, healing the cut didn't make the pain stop. The blood had been offered, and the spirit was fulfilling its duty. Dilsha ran faster. Rot! Rotrotrotrotrot...this is going all wrong.
