Most of the doors in the house were closed for now, so Kris just led them down a hallway to his living room and kitchen. He gestured at a wraparound sofa for everyone to sit while he collected the teapot off the kettle.

"Are the storms here magical, too?" asked Silver, relaxing in one of the sofa's corners.

"Is there anything magical other than the plants?"

"No. Only plants and fungi generate magical energy."

"Does the plant magic interact with any other magic?"

Kris chuckled. "I have a twenty-page essay on that."

Cufre took a sip of the tea. "Are you certain that there's no danger involved with this mission?"

Cufre sighed. "I'm sorry, that was insensitive of me. I just... you won't have to be alone anymore, okay?"

"It's okay. You didn't mean to make me sad."

"Not completely, but I doubt any danger will be immediate or life-threatening."

Gone did an upside-down smile.*

Gone was frowning too much.

"We're never sure." Kris looked a little confused. "Did Fadran not have you read the Danger Level Uncertainty notice?"

"I don't think so... but the danger level on the billboard read 'pathetic.'"

"Danger levels are never certain and stable."

"Level one, yeah. I don't expect there to be much of anything for us to actually worry about. That isn't to say that a dragon couldn't descend from the heavens and attack us on a moment's notice."

Bookwyrm raised an eyebrow. "That's a possibility?"

He looked at his mug. "Also, what kind of tea is this?"

"Jasmine. A nice old man from another world introduced me to it."

"You can find it in the academic section in the Inn's library. I have the original copy upstairs, but we should probably worry about that later."

Just now, The Aspiring Archivist said:

"And you don't think that prodding this man for a piece of his collection will maybe anger him?"

"This is a very civil society, I hope you realize. Worst that can happen is we receive a restraining order or pay a fine for harrassment."

Bookwyrm's eyes widened. "You've met-" then he paused. "Never mind. Now's not the time. But that's a very nice world indeed.

"Anyway. I think our best option would be to find our own samples in the wild. It shouldn't be too difficult, unless I'm greatly misunderstanding something..."

Cufre sighed. "It's not okay. I should know better." He put a gentle hand on Gone's shoulder.

"It's a largely domesticated species, just like pretty much everything else on this planet. Only relatively useless plants are left to the wilds." Kris set a bowl of sugar cubes and some cream on the table. "And the plants have been 'bred,' in a sense, to create versions that emit the most energy and create the most effective results. Finding a wild version of this cactus wouldn't be anywhere near as helpful as receiving a more developed kind."

"I see." Bookwyrm sat back and sipped his tea, thoughtful.
