Tacien finished wrapping the large wound, then stood up to give Kris the bandages back.

Tacien quickly drew something on a piece of paper he had had in his pocket, then handed it to Kris. It was a very detailed, although slightly bloodstained, depiction of said cactus.

Kris looked up at the older one: this little lad's brother, perhaps? "Does he often do this kind of thing?"

"Yes," Cufre replied. "He can't speak or write or really communicate at all. But he knows things that no one ever taught him."

"I see." Kris looked down at the child. "How odd."

The boy's strange, color-changing eyes locked with Kris' again.

"Yes, he is. But hopefully he'll be useful for the research."

"All plants here have magical properties. They act as the primary components for spellcasting. Several have multiple capabilities; a recent breakthrough in this particular species' energies might prove to be somewhat revolutionary." Kris gestured to the house. "I have some tea brewing and snacks and things, if anyone's feeling peckish."

"So, our purpose here is to discover how these energies contribute to spellcasting?"

"How exactly do we do that? Are we asking people, or performing some type of experiment?"

"We'll need to get our hands on a sample or two, for starters. In light of this discovery, the Bereau of Agriculture and Vangari has recalled and stockpiled most of it from regular homes like this one. Only museums and certified collectors have any at this point." Kris pointed out to the north. "There's one such sample over that way, but I'm not sure what the best course of action would be to retrieve it."

"And if that doesn't work we could try to buy it from them." Marilyn made a face. "And if we really needed to we could steal it."

Magic...cactus. I suppose anything's possible in an expansive multiverse such as this. And I get to do science on it? Even better.

He was startled to notice Marilyn walk through the portal.

"Marilyn!" he exclaimed. "You're okay!"
