"There's a small chance, but unlikely. Considering the sudden value this particular species has put on, I don't believe many collectors or institutes will be lending them out anytime soon."

"So then how are we going to get it?"

Cufre sighed. "It's not okay. I should know better." He put a gentle hand on Gone's shoulder.

Gone shrugged. "I know you didn't mean anything bad."

"Of course I didn't. But that doesn't mean I don't need to apologize, or you don't have the right to be upset."

"Well, I'm not really upset. Just as long as I don't think about being alone for so long, I... I don't get angry or sad."

"And I made you think about it. That's my fault, and I'm sorry." He opened his arms, offering a hug. I think this kid needs it.

Gone quickly reached to hug Cufre. "I forgive you. I'm glad you're my friend." He let himself keep being hugged.

"I'm glad you're my friend, too." Cufre held him for a long moment. Poor guy. Good thing he made it to the inn. "Feel any better about the research now?"

Gone nodded. "If you can help me."

Honestly, the last thing Kris had been expecting was a whole friendship arc happening so soon.

He cleared his throat. “Me and some agents have been establishing some cred and reputation for the owner of this house as a collector in the event something like this happened. It’s possible that with some finesse we could land our hands on one of the government-controlled samples.”

Marilyn took a sip of tea. The warmth spread through her body. Being warmish numbed her pain for a couple of seconds. "What does finesse mean again?" She took another sip, smiling. "And how much of this do you have?"

“I have a list of them somewhere. There are quite a few options, each with their own pros and cons.”

"We're supposed to be posing as natives of this world, correct?" Silver asked abruptly.

"Even if we are that isn't that hard. Right?"

"Maybe," replied Silver. "But... we don't really know anything about this world, do we? We don't know who this 'government' is, we only know a little about the natural energy systems here, and we don't know anything about their culture. For goodness sakes, we don't even know what country we're in!"

"But in order to impersonate them you just have to watch them for a little while and you learn how they act. Now if you need to look like them that's something different."

"We're in a city called Uiniqia. It's a few days' ride down from the capital of Handi, serving as a border city and trade center. Population is roughly ten thousand, mostly middle-class and servants and such. Just about every trend here lasts three or four years, but currently top hats and sleek cloaks are in fashion. Locals work from sunup to sundown with a few houred breaks in between, and always speak as politely as possible with friends and strangers alike. There hasn't been any real conflict in this nation for generations, so paranoia is uncommon."
