So we haven't dealt too much with cytonics still so this one may be a mod discussion. The scale tends to be a little different than what we typically permit is the main issue

Just for your information all Keshi can do with his cytonic powers right now is

1. Communicate with Goto or other cytonic beings

AND

2. manipulate what one or more people (it takes more effort per person) senses (currently he only uses this for auditory hallucinations or invisibility, but he could do more with practice.)

Concept:
A very spartan-style, no bs person. He works hard and does it well.
Motivation (Short & long term goal): He's survivorist, so he has one thing he lives by one tenet: survive.
Merits: major: he has a good eye for things that no one notices, its kinda just a part of him. minor: he's a fast talker, and he gets stuff done. he's a bronze compounder.
Flaws: He is very very suspicious of everyone.
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): Can be as minimal or as detailed as you wish, does your family have any family? Friends? Enemies? (These will usually be represented as flaws as well) These relationships could be NPCs or they could be other player characters, though please ensure you consult with the players in question first. Please think carefully about this section, as who the character surrounds themselves with will often influence who they are.
Home Planet: Scadrian, a distant relative of Miles Hundredlives, but he doesnt flaunt it.
Current Residence: Where does your character sleep at night? Do they rent a room somewhere (And if so how do they pay for it?), do they have a cottage, a manse, an apartment? And which district of the city have they chosen to reside in? (See our Guide to Alleycity for information about districts and existing locations)
Backstory: Working on it.
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): Criminal organizations still haunt him.
Links (Eg. Theme song, a spotify playlist, a pinterest mood board): Links to any resources you may have created for this character. Not mandatory but they are very fun to make

Here’s a silly idea I have. It’s still somewhat a work in progress.
Asylum Smedry:

Spoiler

Name: Asylum Smedry (Lum for short)
Appearance: they are lanky and dress in sharp suits, kept in perfect quality, detailed with four leaf clover cufflinks and other lucky accessories. In their mid-20s.
Guild (or intended guild): unaffiliated, but is the enemy of almost every casino and gambling den in Alleycity.
Personality: Asylum is extremely superstitious (for good reason) but is also extremely cunning and has a gambling addiction. They will bet on almost anything and they always go all in.
Concept: a Smedry with the gift of being superstitious.
Motivation (Short & long term goal):  they are a thrill seeker who goes in and out of debt all the time, so they would cooperate with others either for the fun of it, or to get enough money to go gambling again. No real long-term goals currently because they are very much a live in the moment type of person.
Merits: major merit: the ability to be extremely lucky sometimes. Medium merits: being able to get money very fast, and being able to make other people around them unlucky by making them walk under a ladder or break a mirror. Minor merits: a large stash of four leaf clovers, rabbits feet, and salt. Decently good at smooth talking their way out of situations. Beginners luck at almost anything.
Flaws: sometimes extremely unlucky. Very good on getting on peoples bad side. Often lose all their money. allergic to black cats.
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): disowned themself from their parents to protect them (trust me it will make sense later) has a lot of enemies that they are either indebted to or won a lot of money from.
Home Planet: earth (Alcatraz)
Current Residence: whatever hotel or in they can afford and that they don’t owe money to.
Backstory: Asylum Smedry was born on Friday, October 13 (their most unlucky day of the year) on earth. As a teenager, they accidentally broke their mothers back (I think you can guess how) which caused them to disown themself for the safety of their parents. On the most unlucky day of their life they tripped, and fell directly into the Alleycity and has lived here ever since. They picked up gambling to get money and quickly got banned from every casino in the city.
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): though they enjoy their life they’ve never found somewhere they belong (primarily because they fear if they get attached to people, those people could get hurt)

Feedback is appreciated.

Alright folks, I have been granted temporary approval privileges by the one and only Voidus. I will give y’all some feedback, and if it looks good, I’ll approve ya. Otherwise, I’ll give you feedback and send it back for you to workshop it.

Guess I should put this here:

So, as long as we can find a way to make him sociable and actually, ya know, interact with people, they look perfectly good to me. My main wondering is this: why are they in the Alleyverse? What caused them to be here? Why do they stay? Additionally, I worry that a quest to be an elantrian would be a hard thing to focus on. However, I think we can find a way to weave it into a narrative. Approved!

This is my character idea to help in upcoming plot stuff:
Keshi

  Reveal hidden contents

Name: Keshi
Appearance: a 4 inch tall Kitsen that wears tight silk clothing. He rides upon an  armored (the armor doesn’t really do anything it just is for aesthetics) hyperslug named Goto.
Guild (or intended guild): none
Personality: Keshi is an honorable warrior, or, at least, that’s how he sees himself. He’s extremely stubborn and will never go back on his word. Even though he is a spy, he doesn’t lie to get into places. In fact, he distains lying.
Concept: Keshi is a cytonic kitsen spy who was once the prince who was not prince before he self banished himself after getting his entire team killed. He rides on the hyperslug goto. He can create illusions to make himself undetectable and copy voices or sounds.
Motivation (Short & long term goal): Keshi is motivated by his shame at getting his team killed. Which is the reason he has not left Alleycity since arriving. He believes he deserves to work in this uncomfortable large city for what he has done.
Merits: major merit: cytonic ability to create illusions. Medium merits: Goto the hyper slug (allowing teleportation), espionage expertise. Minor merits: multiple small spear-like tools (actually screwdrivers), electrical equipment and hijacking devices, and can fit into small spaces.
Flaws: will not directly lie (is OK with telling half-truths), prideful, finds it hard to break promises even if he needs to.
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): son of the current king who is not king. Because of self banishment he has no one from his past except for Goto.
Home Planet: Evershore
Current Residence: nomadically traveling through Alleycity
Backstory: Keshi was born the prince who is not prince on Evershore after superiority occupation. He was one of the first cytonic kitsen born in the centuries. After finding he lacked skill in fighting, he was made a spy for the kitsen, using his hyperslug steed to sneak aboard ships and his illusions to stay hidden. On one reconnaissance mission (probably against the superiority or something IDK) he snuck onto the main ship of a small scouting group. He saw a chance to take down all the ships and, disobeying his orders, he hijacked the ship. This was a fatal mistake as this so-called “scouting group” what is an ambush. All of the other ships put up anti-cytonic bubbles. To trap and slaughter the rest of his group. before he could get caught he flew the ship out of range and teleported randomly arriving in the Alleycity. Believing he deserved this fate, he vowed to not return until he had redeemed himself.
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): he must redeem himself before he can return home to his people.

Alright. From what I understand, this is  fairly balanced. However, it is teetering on the edge of overpowered. The only thing keeping this in check is that they are completely new to the Alleyverse, and that they have no clue how to deal with other magic systems. For now, it should be fine. However, make sure to keep an eye on the power level. Approved!

Guild: Unknown ( I dont really know guilds)

Personality: He is an easy going guy, that has a more relaxed view on his ideals

Motivation: Learning more about cultures, and people from around the universes

Merits: Major: Knights Radiant (Windrunner) Normal: Scholar/Learner, Scout Minor: Some Fighting Prowess, Metallurgist, Hemalurgic Knowledge

Flaws: Can seem cold to some people, as he always wants to learn, and is more focused on protecting.

Relationships: He has had many friends, and has lost a few , and his parents are long gone.

Home Planet: Roshar

Current Residence: A tavern, that is of standard quality

Abilities: Arranis is proficient with many weapons, as well as other combat, and has amassed plenty of experience of his years.

History: Arranis grew up on his home planet, but early on found at that the planet seemed dull to him, and he wanted to explore the wider universe in time found his way to places people could only dream of going to. When he earnt his spren, and said the ideals, he decided he was going to break the mould in which his specific order of knights were associated with, and has almost successfully broken the mould, changing his and his spren's view on the ideals, and serving a higher purpose, with more freedom. He has taken to the alleyverse, to learn more, and expand his knowledge on the places he had visited, by experiencing things first hand with people from those planets.

Loose Ends: Can be angered quickly at points, and still has many things to learn.

I updated the Merits section, is it good now @Voidus

This is very close to being approved, though I have a few inquiries:

1) what ideal is he on? That will most certainly affect how strong this character is

2) how did he encounter his spren? What characteristics earned them the honorspren bond? And since you are likely going to be speaking to and interacting with your spren, what is their personality like?

3) the idea of bending the ideals based off of Intent seems very interesting. How do they make that work? And what exactly has been altered? Also, since the oaths were bent, what have their oaths been?

This is a very interesting idea, but it needs to be elaborated on for me to approve it.

Alright. Overall, the character and personality seems interesting, and certainly workable. However, given that they currently don’t have anything in the way of backstory, I can’t approve it. The goal of the backstory is to 1) explain how they got to the place that they are, and why they became who they are. 2) to help flesh out the character, and make it easier for you to roleplay it. 3) to give a hint of deeper characterization and motivation. It is frankly a vital part of staying invested in a character, and I worry that you won’t be dedicated to roleplaying with your character if they don’t have a backstory. If you are stumped, and this really applies to everyone, send me a dm and I’ll help you out.

So from what I understand, this is more volatile chromium. It had the potential to be very powerful, and alternatively, quite dangerous. Given that this is influencing other people’s actions, it would need to be very carefully roleplayed and coordinated with whoever you are roleplaying with. However, I have faith that you can make it work. Be careful, and make sure to play to the superstitions, giving bad luck as well as good luck. Approved!

Alright folks. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to not only comment here, but also send me a dm if you feel so inclined. This post will not be permanent, and will only be for assisting the revival. The most important thing to keep in mind for a character is to make sure it is someone that feels three-dimensional, and is someone you feel you can be happy roleplaying, and will not quickly abandon, as that is kind of what caused the Alleyverse die off in the first place. Also, be proactive with communicating with those you plan on roleplaying with. If someone needs to step out due to more important things than roleplaying with random internet strangers, try to be flexible in the plot. I’ll try to help the best I can, but when it comes down to it, that will be a shared responsibility we all have. Best of luck, and let the fun begin!

Flaws: Can seem cold to some people, as he always wants to learn, and is more focused on protecting.

Relationships: He has had many friends, and has lost a few , and his parents are long gone.

Spren: He met his spren on Roshar, after wanting to protect the wider good of the universe, and has been able to shift his ideals to meet what he and (Astryn) wanted to do with the wider universes. Astryn is a calm spren that does not talk to much, but they help each other through the harder times in their lives.

Ideals:

1: Life Before Death, Strength Before Weakness, Journey Before Destination.

2: I will protect the people and places that cannot protect themselves.

My only concern is that shardblades are quite the powerful tool. And, as a Windrunner, I feel that it might get out of hand. I am open to trying it out, but it would be a very thin line to cross into the realm of a hair too powerful. Making them a second ideal Windrunner would alleviate that concern, though. It is your call, as it is your character.

Other than that, it looks good!

Hi! Couple of notes. (oops, and then i wall-of-texted)

Firstly, you may want to give a couple more details on the appearance. This isn't a requirement, just so people know how to describe you.

Personality and motivation - these are perfectly fine to have, but you're going to want to think about how that plays into him actually getting involved in the plot. Do his Survivorist beliefs mean he wants everyone to survive and he'll try his best to make that happen? Maybe he doesn't care about people he considers "beneath him" other than to be suspicious of them, but will he work with others if he needs to? What would make him do that?

Merits - we're going to switch the major and minor there, bronze Compounding is not a minor merit in this case 😛 fast talker is fine for that though, and having a good eye for noticing things is a fine normal merit. You have room to add a couple other minor merits if you want to, though I'd recommend making sure they actually fit with the character you're building, and aren't just random powers or skills. Why is Sonyr (fun name btw) good at what he's good at?

Being suspicious of being is a start on the flaws front! Definitely can impact his interactions with others negatively. However, we generally like people to have multiple or more complicated flaws - maybe add something external or outside of his control in addition to this internal suspicion? If you plan to have him grow out of the suspicion, what else will stop him from achieving all his goals immediately? Is there anything he is bad at doing? Where are his struggles? This part of a character can be just as much fun (sometimes even more!) to write as their strengths.

Relationships section - good start! Who does he know in these criminal organizations? How many are there? Does he have enemies among them? You say he's a librarian, expand more on that. Who are his coworkers and how does he get along with them? Do his neighbors not like him because of how standoffish and suspicious he is?

Residence is a pretty simple thing, you could just say he's living in an apartment somewhere, this doesn't have to be complicated.

Backstory is extremely short. It doesn't have to be a novel, but more details would be helpful - what criminal organization and where? Why'd he leave? Why do they haunt him? Is this related to him being suspicious? What do you mean when you say he spends time with books? How did he get this job, has he always been interested in libraries and books or is this just a job to get away from the criminals? Why do they haunt him? How is this loose end relevant to his life? What do you plan to do about it?

Honestly, some of these would be fine. You don't have to put exacting detail into your relationships section, plenty of people have their characters just not know anyone very well. Residence is also a small thing. It's looking at it all together that shows there either isn't a lot of thought put into this character, or there is, but you aren't sharing it. We can't read your mind on who your character is; you have to tell us through this and show us through RP. Sleepy no-nonsense librarian is a good start!

You've got an okay base, but you're going to need a cohesive draft to add info and make it all work together.

I am going to ask you to actually finish the character sheet before you RP, so we (and you!) can get a good feel for the character. The process exists for a reason 😄

Ene, do you know what the season was in December 2020? It would help me greatly in fishing through the threads for a character I think I made a long time ago

Era was probably 5 or 6 then, last couple years have been really slow.

Name: £yfre

Appearance: Young man, around 20, though he doesn’t give any age. He had black hair, a sharp nose, about 5’11. A scowl is a common feature on his face.

Guild: a cosmere theiving crew. Not Ghostbloods. They are nothing besides a group of six people that make long, elaborate plans to steal form incredibly wealthy people.

Personality: naturally active, wants power, and is a little proud of his accomplishments, but overall, good natured. He is a little bit ruthless however. He is more focused on himself than others. He has a natural fire within him from his past, and that manifests in anger, though a smouldeting one not a loud one.

Motivation: money. It is in his experience, the lovely thing that is stable happiness. That was taught by his father. His life evolves around it, and so he finds it as his stability.

Merits: Major: Lightweaver of the second ideal

Flaws: bribes. He is supceptable to them.  General look at life, and untrusting in the ways of putting his own well being or safety or moneys safety, in other peoples hands. He also tends to dislike people undeservingly.

Relationships: not much besides his theiving crew. His father is dead now, killed by £fyre, but he was a harsh man who had raging. He didn’t approve of anything his child did, but Fyr fought him his entire childhood. They hated each other. And Fyr learned many hard lessons from him. Because of this, he is generally untrusting. He tends not to comment to real realationships outside of business. His spren, in seeking for truth, actually fuels his anger. Fyr takes advantage of the spren, and has no intention of progressing.

Home Planet: Roshar, Thaylen

Current Residence: Undecided

Abilities: Lightweaver of the second ideal. He also is an apt deal-maker. He has gambled before. Though he recognizes it as a money scam. He has skill with the knife. He also is professional with spieghi of hand.

History: intercosmereandrealm theiving crew. He joined after learning about the ghost blood group his father was part of. However, hating his father, he wanted nothing to do with that. So he, and some other world hoppers he found, made this.

Loose Ends: a brother murdered. He was always the favorite son. That could never go in Fyres mind. Revenge. A father murdered. Revenge.

This is certainly a start! You certainly have an idea going. However, for me to approve it, it would need to be much more in depth. As is, I have no concept of this character’s personality, history, description, goals, or what makes him special. To me, all of this could fit under the concept bullet point.

What was their childhood like? Why are they the way they are now? What are they like in general? Who was part of their crew, and why was that crew formed? How did they join their crew? How did they end up bonding their spren? What is their spren like? Does their spren have a name?

There are so many questions that I have about this character, and that comes with just fleshing your character out. The character discussion thread is a great way to help with ideas, and in addition to that, you are free to PM me if you are looking for guidance on character creation.

This is an interesting idea, though! Keep at it!

@Ookla the Glossy fixed it! kinda. for some reason, i like to flesh out a character during rp, so thats partly why its so sparse.

Hmmmmmm. Well, how about this? This character doesn’t look to be particularly problematic in any sense, so all in all, I don’t have much to worry about when it comes to power level. It seems you are persistent, and quite set on this character. My only concern is that if you don’t have a very fleshed out character, you are more likely to give up on it. Which isn’t the worst thing, but it does get awkward if you are RPing with someone, and all of a sudden, you stop using that character. However, you said that you came from Sanderson Elimination RPGs, yeah? If that’s the case, I trust that you have the roleplaying experience to make it work.

Sonyr is approved, with the stipulation that I want to see them be more than just a personality, and actually get some complexity in there when you get down to roleplaying.

This seems a whole heck of a lot more detailed than it was before. However, I still wonder about how they got to bond a spren, and how they seemed to fit the spren’s ideals. What is the spren like? And what happened to their brother? Now, some of these might be an intentional mystery, and I totally get that. However, a bit of detail can go a long way. I just need you to get thinking about this character and what they are like. They seem to be quite a wreck of emotions, and are likely holding on to a whole lot of trauma, about a whole lot of various things. How do you plan on factoring that into playing your character? Will those emotional scars hinder their relationships with others, and to what extent? Does his spren lessen or accentuate those problems?

Once you give me a little bio on their spren, with name, history, personality, and how they met and bonded your character (none of these things need to be particularly long), I will almost certainly approve it.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by that, but as long as your character is interesting and complex, you won’t be hearing complaints from me.

Putting care and detail into your character is really the foundation of what makes the Alleyverse tick. Given that there is rarely a central goal or guided plot for the characters to maneuver, a whole lot of the roleplaying comes from character interactions. And if there is a cookie cutter boring character, it will be hard to have a good experience.

Best of luck! If you are wondering how to join in on the fun, feel free to ask in the chat thread or collaboration thread.

What does "bribes" mean here? Does it mean your character bribes people? Or that they're easily susceptible to bribes? The second could count as a flaw, the first would not. I'd also recommend having some other flaw than just "they don't trust people", as I've recommended to others; it's a bit bare-bones.

+1 to this, with the addition that it's not just your own interest level I'm worried about, I also want to make sure there will be enough for other characters to bounce off of and interact with. More than one dimension, yeah? Just as a general note to everyone (and also why we don't want RP to be like, a single line in every post).
