Dark.

So dark.

He couldn't tell if his eyes were even open at this point.

His ears rang.

His lungs hurt.

His eyes stung.

He couldn't move.

Ji tried his best to sit up, but just couldn't. But he couldn't give up like this. There was still––

A voice.

Familiar.

Who..?

Elya?

His muscles loosened.

She's... alright.

He felt his eyes begin to close.

Maybe... I can... rest... after all...

As the floor feel out from under her, Grace transitioned. She hit the ground hard amidst a rockfall of ghostly debris. She took a deep breath, taking a mental inventory of her various pieces to make sure they were all in the right place. Then she forced herself to her feet.

In the physical world, the dust was settling. She could see bright green lights flickering. Gradually they began to go out.

Ji and Elya, thought Grace, looking around to see where they had fallen.

The thing on top of her slumped, falling... limp. Was that even something a stone could do?

Wait.

No.

Elya grabbed a chunk of fallen concrete, grunting--almost screaming, even, at this point--to drag herself out from the under Ji's fallen body. The moment she was free a husky gasp escaped her lips, but there wasn't any time left to breathe. Elya twisted over to face upright, quickly tested her most vital functions, then yelped and reached out to catch Ji as he slumped onto the concrete.

"Hey... nono. Don't. Ji, don't..." Elya still couldn't see a thing. She brushed a shaky hand over his face, drawing sticky, warm blood. Lights... he was dying.

He was actually dying.

"Wait! Stop!" She wrapped both arms around his waist, pulling him to her from behind. "Stop it! Snap out of it! Ji, wake up--wake... HELP! SOMEONE! ANY--" Her voice broke.

Grace heard the faint echo of Elya's scream and popped back into the physical realm. She dropped down and turned her knife so the hilt was pointing towards Ji's face.

Kazh started running, then slowed. Wait. His mind jumped. He dashed back to the girl near the corner. "You're a lifegiver, right? Are you willing to help? You can use my fatigue if you need it."

"G--Grace? Oh my god, Grace..." Elya's gasp wasn't as relieved as it was desperate. "Save... save him--please. You... have..."

White droplets dropped from the end of the blade, healing Ji's scrapes and bruises. Once those were healed, Grace sat back.

"What're you doing? SAVE HIM!"

He'd saved her, by the devil. If he died... here... now...

Dust clogged up her throat. Elya hacked up dirty phlegm, eyes watering from the strain. The intense panic of choking overtook her for just a moment, far exceeding any other fear or anger.

Somehow, that was enough.

The seconds of panic pulled herself back inwards, giving her a moment to think.

Okay... think. Use your head... screaming won't help anyone...

Elya swiped a hand across her eye; for all the good that did. He was bleeding--from what? The Pacis' weapons. Those were bullet holes. Bullet holes.

Think. Calm. Think.

"G...Grace?" Elya swallowed. "Is... there... any way out of here?"

"Yes," replied Grace. "Do we need to evacuate?"

She kept an eye on Ji. His soul was bright... but he had yet to awaken.

Look around you, for god's sake! Elya wanted to scream, but she held it in. "I... can't see. Can you see?"

Grace looked around. There were no lights nearby that she could see.

"Wait," she said. "You can't see?"

Why was he still holding on?

It was better and easier to let go.

But why couldn't he?

Did he fail?

Was he not able to save her?

Snap

He opened his eyes to the memory. Wind rushed in his face as he held on to his power. Ji felt himself catch his breath, slowly looking down at the person he just caught with the rope. He squinted, but couldn't tell whether or not she was alright. With a grunt, he allowed his ghostly blades to lower to the ground. As soon as his feet planted on the ground, he rushed over to the girl, carefully holding her.

"Hey," Ji whispered, tapping her face softly. "Hey hey hey. Thana?"

Her eyes––once full of life––stared towards the heavens, looking into nothing. Her chest didn’t move. Dark blood dribbled down the corner of her mouth and nose.

"Thana?" he asked again, shaking her limp body. "Hey… Hey. Stay with me. Please. Please. You're okay. You're going to be okay. Stay with me."

A small rush of peace fell over him for a split second, but it was immediately chased away.

His breaths trailed away as he tried to wake her. His lungs felt like there were thousands upon thousands of tiny needles embedding themselves in them. It hurt to keep his eyes open, even if it wasn't reality. Something muffled called out his name, but he paid no attention to it.

Everything just... hurt.

Ohh  I am dumb.

"Here." Grace offered her hand. "I can teleport us out of here."

Elya blinked. "You're a Transporter?"

"No. It's another magic item. It lets me return to places that I remember."

Grace took Elya's hand and Ji's in the other and remembered.

The memory of Grace studying her fire patterns in the alleyway flashed in all three of their minds. When the flashback ended, in the alleyway they were.

Ji's whole body was matted with blood, now coated with a fine layer of dust. Everything about him was limp and broken, especially when Grace held his hand. Smears of blood ran down the side of his face, a small stream of it tracing its way from the corner of his mouth. He stared heavenward, his eyes void of anything, spare for the smallest glimmer of life.

His chest quivered for breath every once in a while, but it was getting slower and slower by the minute. Any physical wounds appeared to be healed from Grace's knife; however, it seemed to go deeper than that.

A figure in white clothes peered down at him, unknown to the people around him. He offered his hand to Ji, beckoning for him to follow, but...

There were definitely tears. They strained out the corners of her eyes. One hand was shoved against her mouth, the other nowhere near steady. Even pressed up against Ji's bloodied form the hand was trembling like something awful.

Was he alive? He was alive, right? Elya couldn't navigate her hand to his chest or neck. He wasn't breathing, she couldn't find a heartbeat, what scarce patches of skin weren't soaked scarlet red were paler than snow.

Focus! Think! Breathe! Sobbing wouldn't save him. She had to take back control.

You're the strong one! You're the collected one!

You have power! Knowledge!

SAVE. HIM.

Elya broke.

Her body slumped, head hanging limp and shoulders arcing back. A cough of dirt, blood, and agony escaped her mouth: a pitiful sob. The tears left streaks across her dust-matted face. She was crying.

"S-someone... please..." Elya sucked in another shaky breath before sobbing it back out.

"It's time to go."

The man from his dream that felt like happened ages ago stood above Ji, his hand outstretched. The air behind him shimmered, swirling peaceful white forming a portal to the unknown.

"I can't," Ji whispered, sitting up, but avoided the man's gaze. His sight fell down at his own broken body, his spirit passing right through it. "Please."

"Why would you say that?" The man tilted his head at him, hand still offered to him. "What about your family? Don't you want to see them again?"

Laughter sounded from the other side of the portal.

"I do," he admitted, then feeling something in him break. "But I can't."

"Why, though?"

"I... I don't know. I just need to."

"Omni seems to say otherwise."

"Does that whatever's opinion matter? It doesn't know anything about me or even the  why."

"It does," the man affirmed. "But I don't. So why?"

"I don't know."

"Is it because you still want revenge on the Angel?"

"No," he said, surprising himself.

"Is it because you want to find and spend time with a new family?"

"No."

"Is it because you want to prove that you're not useless, even though you are?"

"No. Nonononono!" Ji clutched his head. "None of that, no."

"Then, what is it?"

He tried to say something––literally anything––but all that came out of his mouth were cries of agony. Tears blurred his vision, eventually streaming down his cheeks. He clutched his head harder, his shoulders tensing, his whole frame shaking as he sobbed. Nothing happened to his physical body, but it seemed that even his spirit was broken, almost beyond repair.
