Grace sat with her back to the alley wall, her knees tight against her chest. She conjured a thin, stiff rod and began to fidget with it. Her eyes stayed focused on Ji.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know!” Ji screamed. “All I know is that it hurts!”

The man blinked, tilting his head. “You can receive no physical wounds here.”

“Nono. It’s a different type of hurt.” His hand moved to where his heart was, tapping it softly.

His expression soften, growing sympathetic even. “You’ve forgotten what it feels like,” he whispered.

“What what feels like?” Ji looked up at him with his tear-stricken face. “Tell me… please.”

The man bit his lip, thoughts swirling in his eyes.

“Well–” the man crouched down to Ji’s level, bringing his hands in “–people do some crazy things when they love someone.”

“Love someone?” Ji retorted. “Please. Give me the real answer.”

“I cannot lie. I thought we went over this.”

“But… I can’t be. They’re just people I work with; people with a common goal.”

“I didn’t use the plural of ‘someone.’” The man held up a finger. “Consider this, Ji Naito: If there had been anyone––and I mean anyone––besides Elya in that building when it collapsed, would you have saved them?”

“Yeah, of course––”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I wasn’t––”

“Would you have saved them?”

His mind played over the scenario, except without her in it, and…

“No,” he whispered, a single tear rolling down his cheek. “I wouldn’t have.”

The man stood, offering his hand to Ji again.

“No, I can’t be!” Ji said, ignoring the hand. “I don’t remember it hurting this much!”

“Love always hurts, my child. It’s one of the things that people don’t like talking about. It’s the thing that drives people, especially you today on multiple occasions. As good as there can come from loving someone, there will always be that hurt.”

“But… I…”

“That is why you must leave.”

No. I can’t. Not now. They need me!”

“Do they need you, or do you think she needs you?”

Ji closed his mouth, looking back to his body, his heart aching upon seeing Elya.

“Besides,” he continued, “you have no body to return to.”

“They’ll find a way,” he whispered back.

Ji, in the physical world, felt himself growing more limp by the second. His vision had given out on him entirely. His hearing was just gone. He could physically feel things, like when someone wiped something off his face. His breath began trailing away with every passing minute, each one becoming harder and harder to take in.

Yes sir.

John waited impatiently as they tried to raise the Lifegiver. This was taking far too long.

"Let's move, now!" John ordered picking the young girl up. John placed her in the shopping cart, and set out towards the source of the crash.

Our lifegiver's still absent and will already have a bunchabuncha notifs from here. There's not much we can do.

Kazh ran. As soon as he got to Ji, he shoved Elya away and started casting. He didn't rush the spell, but went as fast as he knew he could. Five seconds passed. Finally, finally, Ji turned into flame. Hopefully he hadn't taken too long.

He had used health as fatigue, dropping his skill, but not by enough to cause problems. He would be able to keep the spell going for less than five minutes before fainting.

Body of Flame does give injury tolerance, so I'm hoping it'll help Ji not die before EmLee comes back.

Also, five seconds is plenty of time for Elya to get back over too close to Ji, but Kazh won't be able to mess with that situation more if she does.

Also also, Grace might maybe be able to steal my spell and keep it going for longer once I faint.

Lyanör remained by the girl's side in the hopes that she'd agree to stay with them. Please...please let everyone be okay...

"This should keep him safe until John gets here, if he comes fast enough. I've got enough energy for maybe five minutes of this before I collapse. What are we going to do after that?"

Grace exhaled as Kazh's spell flowed into Ji. Somehow, despite being fire magic, the energy was able to sustain Ji instead of burning him. Even seeing the magic flow, Grace couldn't even begin to comprehend how such a thing was possible. Normally, it would have excited her to see an example of magic she hadn't seen before. Now... now she just felt tired. Cold.

The last screams of the Pacis echoed. She forced them away.

That would be very cool.  Perhaps we could work up to that later.

"How far away would the Pacis know about him?" asked Grace.

Alissya shook her head out of her groggy state, seeing that the people were around her needed her healing. She rushed to the injured one’s side and started her healing. She was getting tired. Her energy was draining more and more, leaking out of her already exhausted body.

“I don’t have enough energy to heal him. Can any of you help?”

Grace conjured a flask and began filling it with white liquid from the hilt of her knife.

Actually, you’re both kind of right, just Tani is a bit more right. Last night, I wanted to do something, but decided against it since EmLee should give her response.

Kazh dismissed his spell. "You can take mine."

“How?”

Lyanör hovered over the group, wishing she could do something about the situation.

Kay yeah that's a good idea

Lyanör knelt by Elya's side, wrapping her in a gentle hug. "We'll figure this out. He'll be okay."
