Long Game 29: A Mote in Adonalsium's Eye
Elbereth replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
LG29: Day 7 - Plan Odious Ruination: Failure to Execute Hatred. Overpowering, blind, all-consuming hate. That was all there was, in the world. All that could exist. Nothing else mattered to Serol. There was nothing else. Just the feeling of crimson hatred, surrounding him, drowning him. Something, someone, Hated him. A hatred so overpowering that he could feel nothing else, not even his own emotions, so real that he could not but hate himself, too. It grew and grew, suffocating him until he thought he would die from the agony. Then… something pulled away. Attention shifted, or something within him changed - he couldn’t tell. All he knew was that the Hatred was gone. And he had survived. Silence stood in the darkness, and listened. He’d been in this cavern for a while, watching and waiting. Perhaps it was time to emerge into the sunlight again. The night was quiet, across the worlds, though the dangers of the Cosmere were quietly moving forward with their plans. For now, though, it seemed safe. Slowly, carefully, he walked towards the mouth of the cave, watching the light grow brighter until he stood before the boundary on the ground between shadows and true sunlight. Cautiously, he stepped over the line. There was an explosion of sound and blackness, and a body shoved him backwards, covering him from the brunt of the blast. When he awoke hours later, there was no sign of what had happened except for the lifeless destroyed on him (and dripping ichor-alcohol everywhere). Apparently it wasn’t quite safe yet. Sam had died. He'd lay there, watching his life slowly peter out, unable to do anything. Then... color, light wonder, joy, awe. Endowment. He remembered... snatches. Multicolored, iridescent eyes. A glimpse into his future and what it would entail. A purpose. He awoke, lying on the ground where he had been left. The colors were already fading, but he remembered enough. He knew what he had been, and what he was. He had become Returned. No one died! Bard was attacked, but survived! Doctor was attacked, but survived! Sart was returned! Day 7 has begun. It will end in 48 hours. Player List: 1. Assassin in Burgundy - First of the Game 2. Master Elodin - Second of the Signups 3. Jondesu - Quintus 17th Shard Worldhopper 4. Long Game 29: A Mote in Adonalsium's Eye
Elbereth replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
LG29: Day Three - Cataclysm Farallen Oniz walked carefully through his garden, watching his menagerie. Perfect pieces, frozen in time, each in the middle of whatever action had been most important to them. Preserved, all of them. He again breathed in a sigh of contentment. For a thousand years he had maintained this garden - a thousand years of protecting it against change and the power of entropy. With proper care, it could easily be kept perfect until the heat death of the universe - provided the Shards hadn't figured out a way to prevent that from happening. With the combined power of all sixteen, it was almost an inevitability that they would figure out that problem eventually. And so, with a little bit of luck and attention, his garden could last forever. Not just unimaginably long times, but forever. Perfectly Preserved. A little fire blossomed near one of his figures - a mortal. Frowning, he bent over it - someone was trying to interfere with his work in the Physical Realm! This one was a worldhopper, involved in...something or the other. It all seemed to blur together when he was here. He pushed a little more of his power into the worldhopper, Preserving it more. The fire winked out. Satisfied, he stood up again. Dark laughter sounded behind him. "I should have known you would occupy yourself with something as...sentimental as this." The voice was mocking, hateful. Farallen shivered. "Ah. The Lord of Hate. What brings you to visit?" He attempted to keep the fear out of his tone. He wasn't sure whether he'd succeeded. "Finishing what I started - all those years ago." Then there was only fire. Fire, and the baleful hate of the one who watched him burning. After a time, Odium looked around the remnants of the garden, melting under the heat of his power. Such a monument would be...satisfactory. Let the Cosmere tremble. The Lord of Hate reigned again. Conquestor was killed and Preservation was Shattered! Jondesu was a member of the 17th Shard! Day 3 has begun, and will end in 46 hours. Player List: 1. Assassin in Burgundy - First of the Game 2. Master Elodin - Second of the Signups 3. Jondesu - Quintus17th Shard 4. AliasSheep - Kelen Taldar 5. Darkness Ascendant - Kaldain Selblessed 6. A Joe in the Bush - Jack Tormander Returned 7. Sanderson Elimination: Memories This is Sanderson Elimination. It is not a ruleset, a dry summary of what is - if you’re looking for those, look elsewhere, for I am not a lawmaker. I am a writer, a singer, a weaver of words, and of SE, this I sing: SE is a pocket of peace amidst the world’s turbulent chaos, laughter and blood mixing without sorrow for death. Divinity and depravity exist here in harmony, interlocking to form a story of contrasts. There is deceit, danger, and betrayal, yet there is trust too, and safety, and beauty. It is chaos, shadows, light, death; fear, anger, wonder, love, friendship. But, let us begin with beginnings. It begins with a man whose smile is death. It begins with the death of a doctor in the night, and a woman running messages, and a village thrice doomed to die. And it begins with a story. The story is one of murder, and distrust, and betrayal, and it doesn’t always have a happy ending. Yet despite that… it’s beautiful anyway. And that is SE: a cycle of game after game, story after story, all weaving together in one great narrative tapestry of revenge and love and loss and ever-present death. So the story continues to weave and be woven. Frozen instants fill the tapestry before me, seemingly unordered in time or space, myriad memories flowing into each other without break or end: A glint in a woman’s eye that might be a tear; scrawled writing in blood; a silhouette standing on a rooftop, unaware that he has already been betrayed. Snow covers the tapestry for a moment, then clears to reveal a young man arguing with a horse, a cellar, three paranoid people talking late into the night. A kandra sings a song of shadows, five sets of eyes turn black, and two daring grins hang over a jacket that’s not quite real. A year’s length of memory passes by in an instant, ending in blood and betrayal and death and the birth of a sunset. On a solitary mountaintop, Shards swear to Odium. A suspicious lawman’s badge glints in the sunlight. A hand reaches from the grave to grasp a stuffed panda, while above it a woman drowns in blood. Love comes with the dawn, until fire takes all. An artist kills an emperor, guilty innocents die, a hand is stolen. Aon Ati glimmers in spilled ale. An inquisitor casually licks a drop of blood off of a spike, a heart is ripped out of its chest, and a cook slices tubers, smiling. Thus the second year ends. The third year blooms in a wild spiral of color and activity and a tableau that is nearly whole but in truth many pieces flowing into each other. A forge explodes in fiery beauty, while a tiny blue bird flits over it uncaringly. Then, a storm of bone rips a young girl to shreds, which becomes a storm of metal from which ascends Preservation, whose power forms the Well. That well’s power trails into a woman, who meets a man in a darkened tent on Roshar, and the fire that once separated them at last brings forth new life in that darkness. The darkness becomes deeper, now. There are nightmares and dreamwalkers and shades, paranoia festering until reason returns in sharp betrayal. A brief burst of storm covers the tapestry for an instant, then dies away to reveal a pair of rabbits hopping innocently towards a huggable sword. That sword stands hilt-to-hilt with another, much darker sword, whose tendrils extend outward to a man with hateful eyes, and then… well. The tapestry continues on, farther than the eye can see, images building and twisting and turning in unspeakable beauty. That is our story, we of Sanderson Elimination. Our history, our lives, our pasts. Each image and instant is a memory, a story, a lesson. And how well we have learned! We are not bumbling children, stumbling about, trying to find our way. Not anymore. We are death, all of us. There is a danger in our words now, quiet watchfulness lying below the surface, waiting to strike. You do not toy with someone who can kill you, not unless you are even more dangerous than they. Few are: and we name them divine. So, then. What is SE? Yes, SE is darkness and danger and death. Yes, there is anger, there is fear, there is despair. There always is. But there is also hope. Joy. Laughter. Love. Despite the fact that you could die any day or night, despite the knowledge that you cannot trust anyone, there is community here. There is a sense of comfort, of caring. That is more important than the winning and the killing. That is what makes this SE. For me, that is what makes it home. Happy holidays, all.

Long Game 29: A Mote in Adonalsium's Eye
Elbereth replied to Seonid's topic in Sanderson Elimination
PSA on Shardic Abilities: A Shard has two unique actions they may take - they may invest (which may only be done during the Day Turn) and they may use a unique Shardic action (which may only be done during the Night Turn). If a Shard chooses not to invest in another player, they may essentially "self-invest" during the Day Turn (using one of their actions like normal). This lets them use their investment ability instead of their Shardic ability, as if they had been invested by the Shard they hold. Essentially, it costs 2 actions for a Shard's investment ability to be used (unless it is a passive investment) - if they invest in another, it takes one of their for the investment and one of their investee's to use the ability. If they invest in themselves, it takes 2 of their own actions (unless it is a passive ability). As I understand it, the rules for edits are as follows - if it's within the hour (or so), just edit rather than double-posting. If several hours have passed without anyone posting, or you have particularly important new information, feel free to post again. (Corollary - if you are voting, please do so in a new post rather than editing, because since at least I track votes as I see them, I can't guarantee I'll see your edit.) It's essentially up to your best judgement, beyond that.- 984 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
This amuses me far more than it should, I think. Wilson got it, though. I actually didn't know you had Tin - I knew it existed, but I don't think I ever found out whether Doc had actually passed it or not. Point stands, though. I probably could've figured it out if I'd thought about it. My vote will go on DA as well. In my opinion, it doesn't particularly matter whether he's a villager or an eliminator - even if he is good, he doesn't appear to be actually helping the village. Else he wouldn't have explored last night instead of translating that book. As Wilson said, if he's village the book will move on, and if he's evil it's almost certain not to be able to help the village in the first place. So there's really not much to lose from his death.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm back. Apologies, all, for disappearing from the Shard for a few days, again. >> My last final is tomorrow afternoon, and after that point I will have exactly no excuses for not getting on the site. Reading through the last day cycle, I don't have much to note other than that Hael is considerably more persuasive as an eliminator than I'd given him credit for (given I hadn't looked at this writeup first, and I honestly had no idea which way he was going to swing), and that I can confirm about the mixed metal vial that Wilson has. Since no one's mentioned it yet, obviously the priority from tonight onward is exploring until we can find and kill the Heart. Roles/items are nice and all, but I'd say that unless you consider that power vital (a protection item, for instance, or perhaps a scan), finding and killing the Heart is more important. That's about all for now. Well... hm. If whoever was Dani's contact hasn't yet contacted and passed whatever vial they had to Wilson, I'd highly recommend doing so, given she's essentially hard-cleared now. Ditto for any other metal vials in the game, for the most part - unless you 1) also have lerasium and 2) think you can use it better than her (particularly since Wilson is most dangerous when given options of what to use), I'd highly suggest passing it to her.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I was expecting that to be a trollish youtube video and then it was actually really fascinating. So... yay? Yeah, I didn't tell Dani about Wilson either. That was Wilson's call to make, not mine, and she was entirely too suspicious for a reveal like that. (I'm kind of surprised at how well Dani played an elim, given her alignment. Pretty much everything she did in my interactions with her was suspicious, or could be easily interpreted as such.) I'd definitely agree that assuming that Wilson wasn't attacked at random (which is possible but doesn't exactly seem likely given how she was playing before this turn) or the eliminators didn't just deduce it from me asking enough of them about vials (also possible, though I'd say there's a fairly limited number of people who could guess that kind of thing), the four of us are rather suspect. I think it slightly less likely to be Aonar, as Wilson thinks he likely would've killed her N3 when she revealed to him, not later - unfortunately, I can't apply the same logic to myself, as I likely would've left her alive for a while unless absolutely necessary even if I were evil, because of her death streak and/or because I'd want to encourage the playstyle she was using. And I agree that Wilson isn't really more suspect for this mislynch. Again, there's the point about the WGG (I would say if she were evil, that wasn't an eliminator attack but a vigkill, but that doesn't really make sense for several reasons, so it's rather unlikely), and that Dani wasn't nearly so important that Wilson would've had to do all of these reveals to lynch her. Likely won't post much for the rest of this cycle, given finals and all, but I will try to respond to PMs as much as possible.- 980 replies

I'm afraid I don't remember much more than Wilson. I have, however, just taken a look through a bunch of docs, and the LG17 dead doc has a great deal of inactivity discussion. So start there? I don't have screenshots, though. I don't take screenshots of that kind of thing. I was about to say basically what Stink just said. It might not be a bad idea to require a new GM to either co-GM with someone more experienced or to request a more experienced co-GM to help with their first game. I know that I have in my profile page that I'm willing to co-GM any game at pretty much any time, the only requirement being that I know the background or have time enough to watch/read it before the game begins, and it's not as if there's a dearth of other volunteers. Several times before LG27 began, I very nearly offered to help with that game because I was worried about two first-time GMs. I don't know how much I would've helped with the bigger issues, but I know that at least a couple of the problems (the PMs getting sent out 24 hours into the Day, etc) could've been pretty easily solved. And there are a bunch of little tricks and such that aren't really written down anywhere (like, sending role PMs ahead of time and adding players at turnover, and that kind of thing) that an experienced GM could help with. Interesting stat - 7 of the 11 games marked as broken in the past year, on the spreadsheet, were run by new GMs. So I would say that something being put into place would be a very good thing. I, also, think this is an excellent place for this sort of discussion, and look forward to continuing it in the future.

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Due to technical issues, I'm posting this about twelve hours later than expected (internet not working, then the draft wasn't saved this morning but now it is?). >> There may be bits that have already been covered in the intervening time, but I think it's not enough to bother revising. Rather than multiquoting five posts and stating a slightly different combination of the same things for each quote, I'll just try to summarize: Yes, I can confirm that Wilson contacted me and asked me to act as a proxy for gathering vials, which I attempted to do with moderate success. I told her about my own Iron vial, which I attempted to give her that night but it was stolen. >> Again, not happy with the thief. One of the people I contacted was Dani, who originally said she didn't have or know of anything, then that a contact she knew had one, then the next night that she had a vial (which she'd the previous last night and lied about not having) and was going to pass it to me (until the events of the last part of the cycle occurred, which Wilson has neatly summarized already). Five people knew of Wilson's role before this cycle, including myself. Aonar and I found out night 3; the other three all found out this cycle as far as I'm aware. She did indeed tell me (and presumably Seonid/Aonar) that if she was killed to look at Dani. Dani has been acting fairly suspiciously throughout my PM with her, in my opinion, and the attack on Wilson just confirms her alignment as evil. I also agree that it's very likely that Wilson's not pulling a WGG - it's possible, but seems entirely unnecessary right now. In this case, the purpose of the WGG would be to explain why she hasn't been attacked yet, but as others have said there hasn't been any reason to even ask that question given her playstyle this game. A couple questions: Daniyah - why did you choose to protect yourself last night rather than passing your vial to Wilson? Did you particularly think you would be attacked, and why was that all that much more important? Ecth - "Second, because of thanking the doctor" What do you mean by this, exactly?- 980 replies

Not the case, actually - I write most of my posts on the Shard, even if I don't have internet and won't be able to send them immediately. The site usually saves them, and I just have to remember to select-all and copy the post if I want to go do something else for a while. The only time I don't is if I'm quoting from previous cycles, because I use a doc to hold the posts I want to quote and usually end up writing the post in there. That said, I do usually have a doc. (The MR18 one doesn't have much in it, as you might imagine. ) It's also somewhat irrelevant in my case as my tablet doesn't copy over formatting from docs, so it'll never look like it came from one in any case. The point stands, though. (EDIT: You also seem to be assuming I have access to more than one device. Which is also really not the case. )

Kills come before lynches in that if there isn't a traitor kill, it cannot be because the lynch killed them instead. The only time I can ever remember votes being canceled because someone died first, regardless of where lynch is in the order of actions, is QF15. Where it was specifically stated. And... when there's doubt, asking never hurts. Excellent game, all. I apologize profusely for being inactive D1 and getting lynched as a result. >> That was my fault. But well played, in any case, and see you in the next one!

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Um, guys. Bandwagon, much? o.O Len wasn’t in any danger, and then he accrues five votes in the space of two hours. Three of which have little to no reasoning accompanying them. That’s a little out of the ordinary. If he does turn out evil, in addition to the previous interactions we can look back over, I’ll be more suspicious of Jondesu - his vote on polking feels like an attempt to divert attention away from Len, although if so it would have made more sense for him to vote on PK. If he doesn’t, I’d particularly suspect Aonar and Arinian for voting essentially without reason (then Araris, Dani, and Wilson in order of most to least suspicion, after that), and PK because I could easily see this bandwagon being an opportunity for the elims to turn the lynch from a teammate. Given that, I’m okay with Len being lynched, because I think it’ll give us a fair amount of information either way, and considerably more than lynching PK would on average (since we only get information from his lynch if he turns out evil). I don’t think there’s a need for me to add my vote, though, and it’s possible that someone could vote to change things in the last twenty-five minutes, though probably unlikely at this point. No need for me to take away the possibility altogether, though.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill

I'm here, and posting, though I have enough to do today that I probably shouldn't be... Quotes from previous cycles, as usual: Wilson: Oops. >> I was going to go back and check the spreadsheet after I finished that post, and then I forgot... Hasn't survived in 14 games, then. Len: ...And I am alive and apparently the village idiot. Thanks, Len. >> Ecth: Ah. Well. The game wouldn't really work if exploring didn't help the village. You expect that the eliminator team just keeps getting new members and powers, and the village doesn't get anything to counterbalance that? Yes, exploring helps the village. Can confirm. (Or, if you want a non-balance argument, my item which was stolen would've helped the village. Had it not been stolen. >>) Mark: Can confirm. >> I had something stolen from me last night, and I am slightly less willing to forgive than Mark. If the thief is an eliminator, then I am sad. If you're a villager, don't steal unless you have reason to! I could have put my item to use, were it not stolen. You almost certainly cannot. So thanks for that. I agree that the lack of posting so early in the game is rather shameful, and I apologize for contributing to it. I will attempt to post every turn from now on (with the. possible exception of this next night turn, as it's the last two days of school before finals and I may be a bit busy). I haven't seen anything (since my idiot gut read on village!Rae) that strikes me as particularly suspicious, and I have no issue with PK being lynched, so I'll leave my vote off for now. And this is why inactivity is bad. Not even because it allows the eliminators to skate by without posting, or makes it harder to find suspicions or to lynch. Because new players interested in our community see only inactivity and nothing happening, and that really doesn't interest them. So they don't get invested, and they don't keep playing. Because we don't care enough to actually talk. And that's just saddening.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
First off, sorry for disappearing off the planet these past few days - it hasn’t been Thanksgiving so much as a lot of schoolwork, and prioritizing that over SE for once in my life. I’ll try to be a little more active than I have been, but it’s also the last full week of school, so I can’t guarantee much or any activity for the next few days since I’ll be trying to focus on school. Which… all things considered, is probably a good thing. A few notes from my readthrough of previous cycles, nicely quoted this time): Ecth: Mostly quoting this so I don’t have to go back and look for it. I do wish to RP with Kresla. We… will see if that happens. >> Len: Um. I know it was pointed out that Wilson would be lower priority this game as she’s RPing and all (which I’d agree with, and am in fact rather happy about), but saying that I’m generally more high priority than her is… um. No. I’m not certain how in the world you got that impression, but I’ve only recently become a priority kill at all. There’s a reason she hasn’t survived in… 13 games? And sorry for that, again. >> I don’t like that I’m not giving this game my full attention, but it’s also kinda nice in a way? Arraenae: I… this post rings alarm bells for me, personally. It feels very eliminator-ish. That said, I got a very similar eliminator read on you in MR17 and you were village, so I’ll withhold judgement for the moment. Ecth: Multiple others have already said this, but… Why would you suggest this? One, you’re telling people not to say what their role does but at the same time telling them only to PM you if they have a scan role, essentially. And while there are different types of scan role, they’re still basically telling you what they do. And second, even could you get people to actually claim to you (which they shouldn’t as they have exactly no reason to trust you), how the rusts does that help anyone? I'll try to post at least once a cycle for the next week or so (after which my activity should go back to semi-normal). I believe that's all for now.- 980 replies

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Again. From the rules: While it's possible that they could have secondary win cons that are partly conflicting or different than that, that is most certainly not the implication, and I don't think it's something we can afford to think. We have to assume that the eliminators are acting in concert. It makes the most sense given the rules and it's more problematic for us than them fighting each other. This post actually makes me somewhat more suspicious of you, for a couple reasons, but I'll wait until day to say why, if I live. I have broken the forum with quote boxes before. I didn't want to bother last night. I am, however, going to edit it into quote boxes now that I'm properly awake. Sometimes, screenshots are useful. (You made a post a few posts below that which is useful as well, by the way, though I'mnot sure it's still relevant with the forum update.) Meta's made one or two posts over the years that I could pull out as well, particularly one in... LG3, I think. I may go find that later.- 980 replies
