Since the doc's been released now, comments: Why do you think I'd hate you for it? (And you say the same for Doc, later on.) Seriously. It's your duty as an eliminator to take out the most active/dangerous villagers, of whom I was definitely one (until the Julii clarification, at least; after that it was rather more arguable). I'm not going to be angry about that. Mock angry, maybe, but not even really that in this kind of situation. It's what you do. Don't worry about it. That said, the fact that you thought that we would be angry and did it anyway kind of saddens me. Kind of a short-term view, in my opinion. You may have a slightly higher chance of winning this game, but it'll make you less likely to be accepted and trusted and happy in the community as a whole and future games if you're doing things that (you think will) make people angry. Also, props to Jondesu for being an excellent eliminator and playing a great first game. I was very impressed both in thread and in the PM. Well done. Regards to the PM thing - in my opinion, doing what they did was still the best option. But I laid out my reasons for that in the dead doc, and don't particularly feel like doing so again. Anyway, with practically anyone else (except... Mage, possibly, or a particularly new player) that strategy would've worked. It's just that Len happened to not care about being an elim and preferred betraying his team in order to win, breaking the game partly in the process. (To be clear, breaking the game is not a good thing. It's something to be avoided. But, everyone plays differently, so it was entirely within Len's right to do that given the opportunity. I just personally disagree with it.) This was a good game, and I really liked the Merit mechanic, and hope we see it again in future games. See you all in the next!

Orlok. The problem I’ve had with writing your voice for quite a while has been the imagery. What can I compare you to? Because the thing is, you’re nothing like light or dark or a storm or an owl. Nothing even remotely related fits because… fundamentally, you are human. You could not exist outside the context of humanity. Light and Shadows simply are. They’re natural, primal, elemental. You’re not. With you, I think more of a perfect porcelain cup of tea, a simple circlet of black metal, ink flowing measuredly from a fountain pen. Human images, not natural ones. But those aren’t ideals, nor are they quite perfect. So I’ll just use words: you’re thoughtful, and ambitious, and honorable, and incredibly considerate of others. You’re the most eloquent person I’ve ever met, and extremely intelligent, and you always give excellent advice. Most of all, you’re rational. Sanity. Reason. Every word and action is carefully considered, in order to be sure that you are saying and doing precisely what is in your best interests and the interests of those around you. You don’t want to rule the world or become immortal because you’re mad. You are perfectly, almost scarily sane. The voice I hear from your writing is nearly exactly that of your spoken voice: considered, restrained, collected. And that’s why you don’t fit with fundamental natural forces: because you’re reason. Order. Such things do not exist without humanity to give them shape and meaning. You exemplify humanity, Orlok, and all that it could be, and you will do all that you can to see its potential realized. And I think that is truly wonderful.

Long Game 28: The Awakening at the House on the Hill
Elbereth replied to Wyrmhero's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I, on the other hand, will join. Kresla is a young, innocent girl who's always been a little bit fascinated with the house down the road. She's come with nervous curiosity and... not much common sense. I'll try to RP this game, though no promises. Should be a fun game! I'm rather amused that my first year of SE is kind of bookended by Wyrm's games.- 980 replies

On the other hand, I'll be joining. First of the Twilight is in. I'm... not sure what her character is like (I'd have to look back at MR11, when she first appeared), but I will say I likely won't be RPing in this game, at least until I die in LG28. (Hael, if you'd like to use her for writeups, go for it.) I will make sure to be as active as I can. Yay for a roleless game!

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
...Since when does claiming Seeker make you less likely to be killed by eliminators, exactly? Great game, all. I only got one cycle of playing, but it was still worth it. I enjoyed every minute I spent playing, and watching from the dead doc was quite entertaining as well. Thank you, Joe, for an excellent game, and see you all in the next!- 463 replies

Why are you asking me in particular? SE follows the overall site rules, which I believe means 6 months. And that does sound like a cool game, but I agree with Joe that it'll need some modification. The regulars need something to do. Even if it's only the lynch. Or give them a different goal. Something they can work towards, anyway. I presume the Reckoners would be a hidden faction then?

Long Game 27: Strife in Ankh Morpork
Elbereth replied to Young Bard's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Whoever said I had? I'm perfectly sane, thank you. And while I rather disagree that my mind is purely from my mother, I'm perfectly fine with that description of my heart. (In fact, it was about the only thing that made me laugh this morning. So thanks for that.) -
Long Game 27: Strife in Ankh Morpork
Elbereth replied to Young Bard's topic in Sanderson Elimination
And it doesn't prefer me? That's excellent news. Yep, she's head, happily. -
I know that they've been considered (Aman and Stink and I have a Bands of Mourning LG that'll play eventually), but the reason they haven't been used yet is partly the spoiler policy and partly the delay before a game created can run. What you're essentially describing, though, is an item-based game in which items can be traded, of which we've had several. MR17 couldn't pass objects except through special mechanics, but LG27 can, LG26 could, and LG20 in particular comes to mind as an excellent example of an exclusively item-based game. Or, sorry, it did have a few roles in addition to items... QF16 and QF14 both didn't, though (although all of those items were essentially one-use in both games). Doesn't mean we couldn't have more. And trying to keep the medallions out of the eliminators' hands would be rather different than usual, if it could be balanced.

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Silima didn’t cry, when she heard that her daughter had not been rescued. She hadn’t let herself hope enough for that. She simply looked at Quellion through the crowd, no expression in her eyes, and touched the silver circle-locket at her throat with one hand and the concealed dagger at her back with the other. Then she turned amidst the crowd, slipping through easily on account of her small size. She wasn’t needed, and it would not do for anyone to be around if her mask slipped and the hatred beneath was revealed. Only repeating a single word kept that mask in place. Ratha, Ratha, Ratha… There. Not much, but it’ll do for now. I don’t know how I feel about Aman volunteering himself. It doesn’t seem inherently suspicious to me, personally. Do I think the eliminators will actually kill him? Likely not. They’d be paranoid that he’s arranged protection for himself or is himself a Thug, and thus leading them into a trap, in addition to the reasons already stated why it’d be unwise to kill him. Does that make him evil? Personally, I don’t think so; it seems to me like something he’d ask as a villager. Just not necessarily the best move. This'll probably be my last post of the cycle. I'm not changing my vote; while I'm a little uncomfortable with the fact that Doctor won't be on again to respond, I'm still okay with lynching him because he does seem rather more suspicious to me than Ecth at this point.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
That's all very nice, but it doesn't really make strategic sense. We'd kill off half the players, yes, but the percentage of elims among them would probably be about the same (if we did it completely randomly) or even less (if we didn't and the eliminators manipulated who would get lynched). So... sorry to disappoint, but I don't see it happening.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, sure, but we'll be lucky if we get one eliminator. More? Not going to happen. (Not unless we arranged a tie over like half the players in the game, which while an amusing thought is probably unwise. ) People will die. Don't worry on that front. Lopen, you do realize you just made it so three people are now dying? That doesn't seem helpful. I'll try to get on and post (probably RP) once more before turnover, but that's about it. See you all on the other side, assuming I'm not lynched (which, if that is the case, I shall be rather annoyed that I died because Sart voted on me when he didn't even mean to, but... whatever). I am also considering changing my vote back to Ecth, because he'll likely be on before turnover whereas I never gave Doctor a chance to defend himself against my points. Depends on what the vote tally is like at that point. (EDIT: If I do change, my vote's going right on Doc next cycle, though.)- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Um. And how exactly do you propose we do that? This is the cycle we want the least for there to be a tie, because we have the least information. I... may be willing to join you in that vote. I'll leave mine where it is for now until Doc responds to the PM I sent him (he's seen it an hour ago but not yet responded, which is part of why I'm suspicious), but I do think he's slowly becoming more suspicious than I consider Ecth to be. (Or he could ninja me in saying he's going to bed. Wonderful.) (And then he PMs me before I finish writing this.) The argument that no one had defended him is a valid one, in my opinion, and it's been used before (LG22 comes to mind specifically). Doesn't mean it's always right, but it's a good point. Well... it's still true in some situations. The eliminators could lynch more than two villagers in a cycle, if we don't vote together enough and leave someone with two votes and multiple others with one. Vote manipulation will help with this, as it did in QF14, so they can't guarantee that they'll be able to tie the lynch, but... it's still a danger. I... hmm. Doctor. Ecthelion. Because the other thing that really makes me suspicious of you is that this game you're not paranoid of me. MR17, you were ridiculously paranoid. Far more than I deserve. This game? The only comment you've made about being wary of me in or out of PM is that I'm better at reading people. Which... seems like a way in which you'd view me as an eliminator, because that's how I'm dangerous to you in that situation. Sorry for doing this right before/after you go to bed. That's the only reason I hesitate to do this.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, we've never had a QF this size with eliminators. (The only larger is QF17, which was a free for all.) But QF14 had one less, and it had 5 elims. (And then three died thanks to Alv.) That seems like a reasonable estimate, assuming no secrets. That's not something I'd like to assume. Did I? I was actually intending to vote for you even before Lopen posted his response (though obviously I can't prove that), based on your reasoning and the fact that I had a slight village read on him. Would you? One, that's basically an IKYK. And two... risky isn't the word I'd use for it. You've been proactive, yes, but that isn't necessarily alignment indicative, in my opinion. We'll find someone. It's day one. Is my vote for you any more solid than yours for me or for Lopen? No, not really. Is it better than any other suspicion I have at moment? Yes. (I don't currently have any other suspicions, although I am watching Doctor.) Next cycle we'll have more information to work with, from the elim kill and your death. Hopefully we can be more informed then. For now, we're almost certain to hit a villager. Most first cycle lynches do. At moment, you're my best guess, but it's still a guess. Interesting. Because until this post, I actually hadn't posted since my last in-thread post. I was looking at a PM for a bit, yes. I wasn't posting in it. And then I came over here and looked at this thread for ten minutes or so as I got ready for bed. The activity watcher isn't exactly perfect. And... more to the point, why are you posting this? What conclusions do you want to draw? Are you trying to draw a line between me and Doctor, or say that we're probably not teammates? You don't even say whether Doc's also in PMs or just in thread watching. What's your point? And I'm gong to bed. It's been a while since I've been this active, and it makes me happy to have a thread that engages me again. I didn't RP, but hopefully I'll be able to do so tomorrow, since I do rather like the character concept I have for this game. Night for now.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Whoever said I was a good reader? (Ask Aman what I thought about him in LG24, for instance.) I don't have any solid reads, either. You're overestimating me. Again. Hm. I'm not actually sure. It's a good point that he hasn't been good in a while (and his good playstyle has very likely changed since those first few games), but I can't say whether he's acting similarly to those games. I wasn't particularly paying attention to him (partly because I wasn't playing any of them ). And of course you're qualified to judge. No one has full complete reads on anyone yet. It's Day 1. The game's been going for 6 hours. That's not nearly enough time to get any sort of accurate read on anyone else. But those reads only get better with practice and doing things like what you're doing, i.e. saying what reads you have on others. So don't hesitate to do that. And yeah, vote problems will probably be a thing that happens. Joe apparently likes that mechanic. (I do too. Makes the game more interesting.) Something to be careful of.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I... don't know where you're getting that? I said nothing about lynch trains... I do agree that it's odd that no one's defended Ecth yet. I don't agree about the point about eliminators not being rash, though - while they often aren't, I could entirely see Ecth instead being overexcited about being an eliminator and be more rash than usual. Len, one thing about your recommendations - if a Seeker successfully scans someone, then they also see alignment. So you know a bit more than the fact that that person didn't place the elim kill.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
You've been evil or neutral for the past 7 games. In my opinion, you're acting considerably more casually and villagelike than recently. Does that mean I have a strong read on you? No. It's D1. I don't have a strong read on anyone. But you do seem considerably more village than Ecth, to me. Sure. But that's not the point. You were pointing out those posts as if he were evil at that time, which he wasn't. And in my opinion, they're not that similar. He's giving game advice in both, yes, but... the tone is different. >> I know, that's not really clear, but they are rather different in my opinion.- 463 replies

Quick Fix Game 19: Noble Intentions
Elbereth replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Ecthelion. I disagree. It doesn't feel to me like Lopen is trying too hard to be village. He actually feels quite genuinely village to me. So I'd side with him. Second, posting advice for different roles is something not constrained specifically to Aman, and definitely not something he does especially when he's evil. He's done it equally as a villager. (LG23 comes to mind specifically, and he certainly wasn't evil then.) And I disagree that Aman's overthinking this. He made a perfectly valid point. None of that's strong evidence against you, but then, it's D1. RP will hopefully be coming tonight.- 463 replies

I'm the opposite. We've had too much role madness lately, and people have forgotten how to be vanilla. I'm very happy to have non-role madness games again. Makes things more interesting. I'll be playing. Name to come once I decide what I want to do with this game RP-wise.- 463 replies

And I wasn't even unbalancing the game by that point... my role had already been nerfed and all. Well played, all! Thank you to Aman and Stink for GMing. Long Game 27: Strife in Ankh Morpork
Elbereth replied to Young Bard's topic in Sanderson Elimination
You've only had one experience with it. Maybe you'll have more fun this game? You're a clever cheese. I'm sure you can figure out something to do. Make up your own win con if necessary! Nights were originally supposed to last 24 hours, and the last one was theoretically an anomaly, but our lovely GMs seem to have overlooked that fact. Personally, I like having 48 hours to plan out actions and the like in this kind of game, but it's all a matter of opinion. Also, hey. I'm here. Not posting much partly because I never post much in faction games, partly because I'm rather busy with school and not as engaged in this game as usual. (I'm not even the person writing the most in my doc, which is... new.) But yes, I exist. -
Time enough we got something new in the Acropolis, hmm? I’ll put this in my main voices post when I feel like dealing with the spoilers (i.e. it’ll be a while). Happy birthday, Alv. So, Alv. I’ve been saying for a long time that I’m going to be revising your voice at some point. And I could. I could talk about you through the lens of your voice, the danger of a whisper, the layers upon layers of meaning. And it would be fine. But I’m not going to. Because your voice doesn’t define you, Alv. It’s one of the least defining things about you. Which makes sense, given that you don’t talk. But I’ve already talked about that in the past, and that particular description I’m perfectly content with. So let’s go a step deeper, shall we? Let’s talk about Alv’s soul, the soul of the Shadows. Contrary to popular opinion, he does have one. And despite what even he says, it’s not tiny or withered or anything of the sort. Quite the opposite, in fact. Alvron’s soul is deep as the sea, dark as a shadow at midnight, vast as the void of interstellar space. It is constant dark whispers and writhing shadows on the surface, yet just beneath is an endless implacable patience, always watching, observing, planning. Lying in wait, never stirring until the moment when every piece is in its proper place. His is a soul of layers upon layers of secrets, never quite revealing everything. And it is… uncertainty. Ambiguity. The unknown. A deep, unfathomable well of stillness, secrets, silence, shadows. And all that is just the outer layers, as far as I dare penetrate. Any farther, and there is only a threat of insanity and the promise of death. The core of the Shadows? No one knows that but him, and none shall ever know.
