Welcome! Thank you for delurking! If you want, you can comment on the Oakbrook transcript which questions you asked (if you asked any, that is), and I'll credit you.

Greetings! Welcome to the 17th Shard! We have theories (and cookies, though I would be wary of accepting them). If you want only solid info, go for the Coppermind wiki, if you haven't already found it yet. Otherwise, feel free to theorycraft with us! Which of the books have you read?

Hi! Welcome to the 17th Shard! I like the Kingkiller Chronicles too, though they're probably second to Brandon's in my case. Stormlight 3 is tentatively put at Christmas 2016, which seems forever away. At least it's not as long as the wait for Words of Radiance, though! And we'll be getting Bands of Mourning and Calamity and Alcatraz 5 in the meantime, plus potentially a new novella that Brandon's working on, so we're set for the wait. I really like the magic systems, too. They're probably my second favorite thing about the books, the first (probably) being his plot twists, and his skill in plotting in general. And about the Cosmere: you don't have to remember it. It's interesting, but also complicated and confusing, and you don't really have to pay attention to it. The first time the Cosmere will be tied together in a plot-important way will be be either in Dragonsteel or the third (now fourth) Mistborn trilogy, both of which are at least a decade down the line, if not more. The only relevant things to the books themselves at this point are that 1) there's this character named Hoid who appears in every Cosmere book (whom we know almost nothing about), 2) there are sixteen godlike Shards (basically gods of ideals like preservation or honor) influencing events in the background, and 3) magic works through either the Cognitive or Spiritual Realm, rather than the Physical (which means it matters what you intend to do and how objects think of themselves). And even those are kind of optional to know. Of course, if you want to stray into the General Cosmere Theories board, you'll need to know a whole lot more to understand everything, but there's no need for that if you don't want to. If you do, just use the Coppermind database for reference. Anyway. Welcome!

Well, ebooks are cheaper. And library cards are even cheaper than that. My area alone has 3 or 4 libraries that I frequent (one for the town, one for the big city nearby, one big one throughout the county, and the school library). You should be able to find most of them in one of the ones nearby, though I'm sure some will be missing. Even then, you can ask the library to order the missing book and they usually will. Libraries are awesome.

I'm guessing that Shallan could do something similar to Forging with Soulcasting, but it wouldn't be through the same process. She's not changing the chair's history, she's just changing the chair. And I don't think she could do somethng that refined, at least not yet. Even normal Soulcasters seem to be more along the lines of changing a substance to a different substance, rather than resculpting a substance. I don't know, though. Side note: If you (or anyone else) has questions like this, that you think are fairly easily answerable by someone on the forums, try posting it in the Q&A topic.

He's recently said November 2016 in his UK tours, so maybe he's pushed the date back a month. More likely, it's just so far away that he can't say with any degree of certainty.

I also really like this idea. Feruchemists would be harder to fight against, definitely, particularly if they did something like swallowing their metalminds. My guess is that you would have to touch the metalmind to leech it, not just the person tapping it, but that is by no means certain. While not packing quite the same punch, a Nicroburst/Steelrunner Twinborn would also be quite cool. Running around to every ally, giving help when needed, and bursting enemies exactly when not needed.

Hi! Welcome to the 17th Shard! I'm glad you finally decided to delurkify yourself. It looks like you've read almost all of it. I'd recommend the Rithmatist and the Alcatraz books too, even though they're for kids. They're also very good, though Alcatraz is a bit different than normal Sanderson. Who do you want to cosplay as? And how are you enjoying Shadows of Self?

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...

This is a dream that happened to me: I was playing a game where everyone is in the pool and pretends to be dead. I'm not entirely sure how you were supposed to win the game, but I know I won. How? I burned cadmium, and so no one could see me breathe or move. -

Well, obviously that went completely over my head. I'll have to watch for that on the reread. -

Does Jasnah know Amaram? Am I missing something? Would the ward necessarily have been female? I don't know if wards must be female, or the same gender as their master/mistress. -

Interesting. The followup question would obviously be if we've met this ward. That could be really interesting, if we have.EDIT: The alternative to that would be that the ward died, which give Jasnah more tragic backstory. That's certainly possible. -
Why do harmony need spikes to talk to people anyway?
Elbereth replied to king of nowhere's topic in Mistborn
My understanding (which, as far as I know, is not backed up by WoB) was that Harmony can fertilize the Elendel Basin and keep balance by taking the nutrients from an equally large area surrounding the Basin (i.e. the Roughs). That doesn't really answer why Harmony couldn't just make opposite sounds (or something) somewhere else, but it explains how Harmony can keep it fertile and stay true to his Intent. Also, maybe Shards don't communicate through speech for the same reason they don't manifest for the most part: they live in the Spiritual Realm. Maybe it's difficult for them to influence the Physical Realm, except through their Intent. Ruin could change words because he was Ruining the document, and the heroes' chances of stopping him. Harmony might only be able to change words if they ruin something, or alternativly only if they keep balance. I don't know. -

AAAH I HAVE TO BE EXEMPLARY TO YOUNGER KIDS AND PROPS FOR THE PLAY WERE DUE TODAY AND AAAH Sorry about that. I had to let out my stress somehow. To summarize without screaming, I'm backstage manager for the play. Props were due today, but I still need a whole bunch of stuff (like, 6 things), and the director is rather fierce, so that's scary. I also have to deal with my crew today, where I'll basically be meeting with them and telling them to do stuff, and hoping really hard that they obey. I don't even know if they have the props they were supposed to get. And tomorrow everyone starts rehearsing with props, so I have to cover a beach ball with canvas tonight, and find fake palm fronds, and I haven't even started looking for a place to rent tables, and AAAAAH. So yeah. Just a bit stressed. That's not even covering my issues at home, or any of my other homework, which I've been neglecting in order to try to get the props in. So I'm also behind on everything else. My life is wonderful. -
You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Elbereth replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you go to the Asian Art Museum and see lots of red ink stamps, and all you can think is "Why aren't they round?" When you finally see a round one, and you think it must be from MaiDon, because no Rememberer would put the seal in such an obvious place. When you then begin to wonder how many are stamped in places that aren't visible, and begin to suspect that everything in the museum is Forged. -

Shadows of Self Tour: London Forbidden Planet signing
Elbereth replied to ParadoxicalZen's topic in Events and Signings
Yeah. But this one is also much more difficult to transcribe, particularly the beginning while everyone is still there. As people begin to peter out, it becomes slightly more bearable.
