Idk, it certainly seems to me like something Syl would say in a joking context. There's really nobody in the books so far that would be able to say that and be entirely serious, so it has to be someone that likes to joke around. Since we already know Rock is planning to build Syl a shrine, and that Kaladin disapproves, it's far more likely to be that instead of having to invent entirely new scenarios that have had almost zero evidence from the plot.

Funnily enough, I've always thought her valley was the Valley of Truth too. In fact, until now I thought that was canon.

There's a WoB that this actually can be done, just like a fabrial. It's a very plausible possibility for how the Southern Scadrialans are able to perform mechanical allomancy.

Wha? He read the Epilogue?! Of course we want it!

The reason the metalminds stayed in contact is because he heals faster than you can damage him. As he burns he's already healing, so he never gets all the way to a skeleton. When he's flayed, the lost skin regrows right as it's torn off. If you cut off his arms, they'd have already reattached before the sword had passed all the way through. As for how she got the metalminds off him, iirc they were taken off like any bracelet: down the arms and off the hands. You really should read the books. They're worth it just for how ridiculously badass Spook gets in Book 3. As for the new bad guy, his intent is most definitely nasty.

Youth isn't the only thing you can compound. Health works too. Any Feruchemical attribute can be burned for allomancy. Read the rest of the books. Book 2 isn't quite as good, but it's still great, and Book 3 is great also. Elend does become a more interesting character.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
PorridgeBrick replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
2.Actually, shardblades don't have to disappear when not held either if the wielder wills it, allowing shardbearers to loan their blades and recall them whenever they want. I solemnly swear to eat my hat if the disappearing on death isn't caused by how the Heralds aren't actually dying, but merely moved elsewhere. 3. Due to a side detail in WoR, this is most likely the case. -

Same here. Perhaps the mechanism for the retreating is that the Shardpool beneath is what actually recedes, and the lake just flows down to fill the gap? Sure, you still need to figure out why the Shardpool recedes, but it fits more with the magical qualities of the Purelake.

Feruchemist's would be the ultimate astronauts
PorridgeBrick replied to Haelbarde's topic in Mistborn
I have to disagree with the Op's notion that Brassminds and Cadmiumminds alone could protect you from space exposure. The real damage comes from the solar radiation and lack of pressure. Your saliva and sweat will boil, bubbles of nitrogen will fill your blood, your lungs collapse (or rupture if you hold your breath), your circulation fails, and the side of you facing the sun is fried by intense solar radiation. The only thing that could survive would be a Gold Compounder with a lot of metal. I'm also very skeptical of the artificial gravity idea: the Connections they're talking about are specifically bonds of friendship. Could certainly help with keeping the crew together emotionally, though. -
SnK is most definitely this year's best anime. The waiting for Season 2 is just too painful.

Likely the tenfold comparison comes from the average ratio of maximum allomantic energy to maximum feruchemical energy stored per x volume of metal. After all, both are finite, so they can be estimated to a decent accuracy, barring slight fluctuations from allomantic strength. I'm interested to see, however, if you can get away with burning something that has only been charged to an extremely small amount of its total capacity, and so getting an equal allomantic yield while lowering the necessary input.

The first two are wonderful. The others, a little less so, but still good.

Gross question:Why not soulcast from the latrines?
PorridgeBrick replied to priceless's topic in Stormlight Archive
If Jasnah can Soulcast from a distance, and fabrials are able to emulate the Surges, then it is entirely plausible that you could form fabrials to do the same. They probably don't have any now, though. And actually, they must be touching it anyways in the first place, since they do soulcast the waste into smoke already. Just change the essence, and then voila, Roshar has achieved the ultimate in recycling. If you can stomach it, that is. -
I can't agree more with this last bit. The couples here all seem like JKR just thought "How can I get everyone married off to someone without conflict?" rather than "What characters have personalities that fit well together and can make any romance between them seem realistic while still fitting cohesively into the plot?" The idea that everyone has to be paired off is really toxic in pretty much all fiction, and especially in movies.
-
While I do agree that not all fabrials use Surges, the strength augmenters might be using "Surface Tension", which can increase or decrease a material's rigidity.

Just because she didn't want Ron with Hermione doesn't mean she suddenly wants Harry with her. And I also agree with her that the two don't fit well as a couple, but neither do Harry and Hermione. Really, while the books are quite good, the romance aspect isn't done nearly as well.

I'm pretty sure any spren can be used in pretty much any polestone. While I agree that the emerald with the flamespren in it is not the painknife, it is still some sort of fabrial, as is the heat augmenters which most likely also use flamespren. If Navani said there are thousands of possible combinations, then I doubt there would only be 1-2 polestones per spren, and most certainly not 1-2 spren per polestone. And seeing as rubies have demonstrated multiple effects- pain relieving, and spanreeds, and heat augmenters- I really doubt the stones are as limited as you say. Heliodor should be able to do more than proximity alerts, and other gems should also be capable of proximity alerts.

We have a WoB that Awakening's focus is the Commands. Since the idea that the Commands are holders for Investiture seems kinda off, I think your definition isn't really right. Now, I think there are actually three terms we should define here. Reservoir/Holder: whatever contains Investiture while it is in the Physical Realm. Includes Nalthisian life, gems, metals, surgebinders. Focus: Whatever focuses the investiture into performing a specific effect. Likely has something to do with Forms. Includes Nalthisian commands, Rosharan Spren(?), gems for Soulcasting surge, metals, geography on Sel. Gateway: The window through which the Investiture in the Spiritual can flow into the Physical. May be synonymous with focus. Includes Selian geographic symbols, metals, and gems. In this light, then essentially your theory is stating that Shards are blind to their reservoirs. However, I think Selian geography is the focus, not the reservoir, so the 2D's would still be able to see the land.
-
Nalthis' Focus is the Commands. While life can hold Investiture, I don't think you could really call it a focus. It's more a reservoir. A focus should be something that specifically takes Investiture and focuses it into a magical effect: so the Commands take Breath and focus/filter it into the desired action on the part of the Awakened object, the metals focus the energy from Preservation into a different allomantic ability, etc. Of course, the two can overlap: metals are focuses for Allomancers, but can also be reservoirs of the mists: and gems are focuses for Soulcasters, but also reservoirs of Stormlight. As for Sel's focus, I'm inclined to think of it as the land itself. That's why everywhere has different magics, and why all the symbols used are actually little models mimicking the form of the land.

Now, this is from the coppermind, and I have no book to confirm it with. But it seems that painrials, or at least that specific one, are made of ruby. If the Pain Knife is indeed made from emerald, then that would invalidate the idea that opposite gems can have opposite effects. As for examples of fabrials, we also have the grandbows and half-shards, which are apparently Augmenters that enhance durability (again, Coppermind). No gem is given, though I'm inclined to guess Amethyst (essence foil) or Topaz (essence talus, as well as from an Order containing the surface tension surge).
-
Actually, from where are we getting the impression that the Pain Knife uses emeralds? I just looked at the Navani drawing in the Coppermind, and while it does show a picture of an emerald with a flamespren in it, it never states that that has anything to do with the painknife. And now I'm thinking it is actually amethyst that acts as a Pain Increaser, since according to the Coppermind the Pain Decreasers are rubies, on the opposite side from amethysts.
