I'm more inclined to think they're all from the same place. Shallash is Jezrien's daughter, and That's three already that came from the same place.

"Modern" magic: wizards or superheroes?
PorridgeBrick replied to Arcanist's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I'd say Butcher's magic is definitely soft magic, but it's well enough written and used commonly enough to give the illusion of a hard magic system. His Codex Alera is pretty hard magic though iirc. -
I was actually thinking that if you somehow attacked them during the day/lynched them for some odd reason right after they were attacked in the night, then they'd not be able to have a death cry, since the Death Cry would come at the end of the day and the attack would happen during it. Either way would be good though.More roles that go well with this setup from earlier in the thread are the Artifabrian, who can create one-use fabrials for others to use but not himself, and the Shard(plate)bearer, who can challenge another player to a duel. The duels could either be just a day kill, or maybe a voting "duel" where only the duelers can be voted for. Due to exhaustion, this ability could only be used every 2-3 cycles.
-
The only reason Death Rattles need a justification is because they'd have to be first posted a half cycle after their actual death in order for them to have time to write them. While it would still work, it would be much stranger narratively to only get their last words a day after it happens. Definitely the Perimortem Vocalisations () should be cryptic, if only for the sake of enjoying the game. That was actually what I meant when I was talking about the Painrials. They're basically functioning exactly as if no death had happened in terms of gameplay, able to post and use their powers, except they're dying in the story and any attacks they receive will kill them instantly with no chance to speak.
-
@The Painrials and Death Cries A good way to justify these narratively is to have a 'mortal wound' mechanic. Basically, all deaths do not happen instantly: the attacked or lynched spend time to sicken and die. While this happens, the victim still counts as a player, but he/she cannot post or use any of his actions. Their only action is to write their Death Cry. This way, the painrial does not actually delay their death any, since it really shouldn't by much. Rather, it allows them to bear the pain and continue to act and post like a normal player while they die. As the wounded are still players, they can also be targeted. This allows the Mafia to effectively completely silence their victims despite the Death Cries, since the sudden death allows them no time for last words. However, this requires targeting the same person twice, forcing the Mafia to weigh their decisions.

I'm more curious, like KoN was saying, about how close Kholin is to a mirror image of Tanat. Was House Kholin a house of Stonewardens when it was first formed? Also, does anyone know the meanings of Kaladin's three glyphs? I have a feeling it was said in the books, but I don't have a copy to check.
-
Why are you assuming spren arrived after Honor and Cultivation? I'm almost positive this is not the case. A more likely possibility is that Parshendi, and all the other native Rosharan wildlife (which all happen to be crustacean) were there with the spren before Cultivation and Honor arrived bringing Earth-like life like humans, rats, horses, chickens, etc. After all, the place most heavily associated with Cultivation is Shinovar, what with the farmer upper class and all, and Shinovar is also home to all the earth-like, obviously nonnative, life.
-
I wonder if something could take the online model and be able to animate it. After all, the book gives a few poses for it to follow, and there's only so many ways a giant crustacean/bug could walk, so several of its movements could be approximated without too much difficulty (I think).

I've been wondering this, also. As parallel to Lerasium, it seems like it should, but I also think that would be indicated in the books.

Long Game 3: Blackwater Village
PorridgeBrick replied to Peng the Just's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Ah! Such harsh accusation, it pains greatly Forage's heart. To know even his dear friend Meta suspects him thus, it is unbearable. Surely this great detective must know the danger of thieves? Such valued wares as Forage sells are of value beyond compare. He alone is of requisite skill and valor to brave the most distant wilds for his customers: he alone is so devoted to their every need. To have them available so easily at the front door would be foolish, and while Forage is known by many names, fool is not one of them. Rather, he is possessed of great towering intellect, though he is wise and humble enough to not flaunt it. His true wonders are not in his first room: it is a decoy, distracting the thieves and serving as previews for customers of the greatness they can obtain inside. Who would keep Lerasium in a place stumbled so easily into, as Monsieur demonstrated with such remarkable grace? It is also his site of lesser treasures: metals for allomancers, keepsakes from city life collected by his wall-climbing cousin, and much more of more common, though still valuable, origin. Only Forage knows the way into the other rooms, for only Forage can keep safe his best wares. To let others inside would be to taunt Forage's great and evil Adversaries. To Forage's other dear customer: Forage is sorrowful for Joe. That he understood not the capabilities of his purchase is a tragic mishap. But Forage knows still that he is not in the wrong in this encounter. Joe remembers the fine print on the label of the forge, no? That it comes without an Aon Rao power charger? It was Forage's assumption that his fine client understood in full the terms of their transaction, outlined as it was by Forage. While Forage has now come to realize that this was not the case, he cannot be held accountable for another's error.- 739 replies

Truly, Forage is much aggrieved at your plight. But it is the nature of Forage's shop to include all of the various forms of stuff there are, even if they may overlap with that of other merchants. Metals are but one of many remarkable goods carried by Forage's ever-expanding store. There are exquisite Nalthisian flowers and rugs, lovable crustacean pets of Roshar, Forged vases to decorate your home, even a Shade-in-the-Box as a delightful toy for your children! He has a copied signed by Nohadon of The Way of Kings, and even that most deadly of bludgeoning weapons Words of Radiance (banned in 42 countries for excessive violence). He has Awakened items with a dazzling array of Commands. But this is only just scratching the surface, for if Forage was to recite all his wonderful goods then he would exhaust even his considerable supply of stamina. All other stores are made obsolete by Forage's Foraged Goods. It is this quality that makes his store first among all others. But Forage has no interest in causing harm to such a noble man. As a fellow metallurgist, perhaps you might be interested in this Aonic forge, capable of much higher temperatures than standard forges and a steal at only 2000 Boxings?- 739 replies

Alas, though he may cry deep tears at your misfortune, there is no price that could make Forage open his doors between the worlds for another. If he let others pass, then why, there'd be a massive flood of travel in between. How could Forage earn his keep as a dealer of stuff if his dastardly competition gained access to his cunningly and painstakingly formed trade routes? While Forage has no doubt a man of such impeccable moral fibre would not intend to open the way for his competitors, the result would still be inevitable, for they are persuasive and always plotting, unlike the innocent Forage. It is also likely that Cultivation would be displeased at the invasion to the land she has grown, and Forage has no wish to disappoint such a frequent customer.- 739 replies

Forage would not do such an undignified thing as "hopping" from world to world: moreover, he finds the possibility of its feasibility as dubious. To jump between planets over many lightyears of space would require more force than Forage's poor, sore leg muscles can muster. Even his prize rabbits would have difficulty hopping that far. Forage instead chooses to walk demurely between the various Shardworlds the rooms of his shop are built on. It is considerably better for his legs.- 739 replies

We seem to have come to a misunderstanding, my dear customer. If one was to pay for Lerasium in boxings, then their weight would be much greater then even Forage's strongest Ryshadium horses could carry. A more potent currency, in greater number, is sadly needed, as Forage knows his customer must now understand. To undergo such a deal would leave him with less of the money he needs to supply his customers, and to deny them that would fill his heart with such great sorrow. The ways of stuff dealers are mysterious and complex. Revealing the trade secrets of Forage would remove his aesthete, his essential being. Surely that is not the customer's desire.- 739 replies

Forage has inks for all sorts of purposes. If the customer desires an ink free of the manipulation by the darkest of gods, then he shall have it. Forage fears, however, that such magical properties do not come cheap, though his heart bursts with sympathy for his customer. As a personal favor to a most valued client- no, to a most valued friend- he has decided to lower his price to a mere 150 boxings.- 739 replies

Pfeh, let those obligators try and kill the great Forage. They would do well to remember that Forage's wares include the most deadly of armaments, too, and that Forage knows well how to use them. No dealer of stuff could get by without the means to ward off unsavory customers, and Forage is the latest in a long line of dealers and doers of stuff. Aah, so you are interested in Forage's stock of Lerasium? Forage commends your refined tastes. Do not fear- Forage has it, provided you have the necessary compensation. Oh, but of course such a fine gentleman would not need to worry about such paltry sums. May Forage interest you in his supply of invisible ink? It seems to be an interest of yours. Lord Vizzini, welcome! Those wines you speak of- it has given Forage a most wonderful idea. You see, there are no finer wines than those Forage sells. If you perhaps take a craving soon for the most elegant of liqueurs, then you would be well served by a stop to Forage's store.- 739 replies

Eh, Prince of Thorns is way darker than Malazan. If you could read even a chapter of Prince of Thorns, you could certainly take all of Malazan. The only problem really is the sheer amount of info really.

It would be hard to pull out things from inside you however. While a Compounder could certainly survive the effects, Feruchemical gold doesn't make you any stronger, and tearing those out in a pinch would require a ton of strength. In-body storage is better for metalminds, as Miles demonstrates.

What is the best Twinborn Combo?
PorridgeBrick replied to freezedragon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This makes me wonder: if you have no magic to store, what happens when you store Feruchemical nicrosil? Your own Innate Investiture? Perhaps you would become like a Drab from Warbreaker when storing, having lost some of your spiritual energy. It might also be easier to push and pull on metals inside your body, too, with less interference from Innate Investiture. -

Why, do you doubt the collections of Forage? Forage has all the metals you need, for his customers of the allomantic or feruchemical persuasions. Even rarest Atium is but a trifle to obtain for one such as Forage.- 739 replies
