Official Star Wars Episode VII Discussion Thread (TM)
Quiver replied to Seonid's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Ya know, I've been complaining to people about my inactivity lately. I'm actually really, really glad I don't have regular internet now, because it means I can avoid spoilers. And by spoilers, I mean chull's who I just know are going to start spamming message boards with spoilers from the film, like people who walked out of Empire Strikes Back and told the people waiting in line 'Darth Vader is Luke's father'. ...Oh, uh. Spoilers for the Empire Strikes Back, by the way. Sorry about that. -

Well, I meant more in a post-Trenzalore story, where he knows what the "point" of the splinters are; they die to save the Doctor. I kinda have this idea of the Doctor first being confused at how Clara is wherever-she-is, then being like "Oh rust" when he realizes it's one of her splitners, which means she's there because something happens ehre that means he's in danger... which means she's probably going to die.

Well... I dunno. I guess he was right, but maybe for the wrong reason? I dunno. The Mire chip giving a human ultimate Immortality is kinda a weird plot-point to begin with- if they ahve tech that can do that, then why isn't it more well known? Also... Am I the only one disappointed they never did a story where the Doctor met one of Clara's splinterselves? Been thinking about it, that would have been a pretty fun idea, I think.

Random Stuff V - The Adminpire Strikes Back
Quiver replied to Orlion Blight's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Oddly nothing. That's my point; I'm not particularly excited for this film... But hey, Wonder Woman looks cool! -
Just curious if we know - or if anyone has thought to ask- Brandon about whether or not the various Shardholders -Rayse, Ati, Leras etc- had any extended family. We know that Honor and Cultivation were romantically involved, but is that the extent of it?

So... have any of you guys seen the new Bat,am v Superman trailer? This trailers are doing a great job of making me excited for Wonder Woman's movie. -
Didn't the Doctor say that Sam probably wouldn't live as long as Me, since the chip would have been burned out or something? I admit, for a second at the end I was thinking "Wow, never found anyone else you wanted to make immortal?", but then remembered that. Also, I agree with Mestiv. Bring Back Captain Jack!

I wish Moffat would resign as show runner, but I still want him to write episodes. He can do great one offs, as you say, but he hasn't managed to do a good season story since season five.

Ah, thanks! And, thinking about it, possible more sources of stuff: World War One was 'the war to end all wars', whereas this is being described as "the Final Desolation". Granted, this might be fantasy hypberole - "the last war" isn't exactly an uncommon thigns- but still. Also... we know there is a timeskip planned for the second arc. We also know that there are certain, more radical factions already present in Rosharan society- like the Sons of Honor, the Ghostbloods, the Ardentia. If books one to five are World War One... might it be possible that, as a consequance of the events of this first arc, one of those groups was to rise to prominence in Alethi society? The timeskip might even be a means to facilitate that transition during a time of peace, without having to go into all of the details... In which case, might books 6-10 be intended as a parrallel to the second world war?

So, I was rewatching the most recent Arrow episode in the UK- the one right before the crossover?- and it made me realize something that I love abut this season, which I have never really seen anyone talk about. Granted, it's an extension of something from the (polarising) season three, but still... Anyway: Laurel's fighting style. I love the fact that, on a show with a bunch of non-powered characters using similar weapons, the producers have managed to make the main characters fighting styles fairly distinct from one another. But I think the best part of that ahs been Laurel, because, over the past season and a half, watching her skills develop has been a (subtly hidden) joy to watch. Throughout season three, Laurel's fighting is exceptionally clumsy, particularly if you compare her to Sara. A lot of the time, when she swings with her batons(?) she does so with this awkward, two-handed grip, like she's swinging a baseball bat. Anytime Oliver told her that she couldn't go out and fight crime because she wans't ready, I believed it... because she was not a good fighter. Competent, maybe, but not even close to the standards of the rest of Team Arrow. She still isn't - of course she isn't, she hasn't been trained by Ra's al Ghul, or the military, or Deathstroke- but every episode that has her as the Black Canary, you can see her getting better. She's still the worst fighter of the group, and she doesn't have the same elegance that they do; I think it's kinda important that - unlike Ollie, Thea and Dig- we don't really see her mixing it up with people for extended periods in close-quarter combat. She get's strong hits in, and takes them down as quickly as possible, because she isnt a trained fighter, and her trying to fight the way Oliver does - parrying, blocking, countering- probably isn't going to turn out too well for her. (Which is an added reason for the canary scream. She doesn't need her hands to acivate it, so if she is in a melee or restrained, she just shouts and BAM. Opening for her.)

Eh, couldn't think of a pithy, witty title. Anyway. I've been thinking about World War One lately, particularly the fact that it seem's like a good source of inspiration for a fantasy novel and story themes and stuff. I'm not going tog et into that -since it's my own thoughts rather than directly related to Brandon- but it did get me thinking about something which is Brandon-related. Namely, it got me wondering: Was World War One an influence for the War of Reckoning? I thought I'd open it up to the forum, since- while I have an interest in it- I haven't exactly studied the period, and I thought someone who was more historically aware might be able to help fill in the gaps. Part of what caused World War I was the fact that, during the decades leading up to it, countries were engaged in complicated treaties with one another; as a consequance, whenever one nation went to war (as Austria-Hungary did to Serbia), their allies were basically dragged in with them. It's nto a perfect comparision, but Gavilar had created a United Alethkar at the time of his assassination... which meant that whenever the Vengance Pact was declared, all the Highprinces joined the war against the Parshendi, rather than just the Kholin family. Speaking of which, Gavilar's assassination. This was the trigger that kicked off the vengeance pact (and the war), just as the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was what led to Austria to declare war against Serbia in the first place. As for the War itself, the Alethi camps on one side of the plains and the Parshendi stronghold on the other could be considered analogous to the trenches. The plateau's certainly seem to correspond with No Man's Land; every bridge run costs a lot of bridge teams their lives, as they get shot down trying to cover open ground. This -combined with their leaders refusal to change tactics- doesn't seem that far off from the events of what actually happened on battlefields of the time... Am I reaching for a comparison that isn't there?

When Reading a Book Goes Horribly Wrong
Quiver replied to hopefulmorning's topic in Entertainment Discussion
So we can add 'books' to the list of 'things in Australia that want to kill you'? -
So. What did ya'll think of the finale?

I like the wavy artwork- not having black outlines between colours makes it look better. 8/10

I still need to get caught up on this. But. My impression from Flash so far is that Earth-2 is more technologically advanced than Earth-1. The trains looked more advanced, and Jay mentioned his research invovled trying to find methods to purify hard water without causing radiation. I don't know much about science (serious understatement), so I kinda assumed that his world has had a different history that has resulted in that being necessary. Honestly, the color filter they put over the scenes on Earth-2, and their clothing, kind of remidns me of Caprica, which might be why I assume they must be more advanced scientifically than we are.

Hah. Silly Quiver. You've been here for almost two years, and in that time, you haven't produced ONE theory. Just ponies. Lots and lots of ponies...

I feel kinda bad for Jenna Coleman. I'll admit, I wasn't a huge fan of Clara; she didn't really have any personality in season 7B, since they were just setting her up as "the Impossible Girl" rather than a character. She got a lot more to do last year, though that involved basically rebooting the character and starting from scratch by introducing the school. I'm not saying that's bad, since... well, it was necessary to make her more than just "generic companion". And, in all fairness, it worked; Clara did end up with her own distinct personality. And I do feel that the events of her exit fit with the direction and the arc she's had since last year, with her becoming mroe Doctor-y. (In fact, as a neat note... her stance when she finally "faced the raven" was very much a NuWho regeneration one; arms wide, reeling... but instead of golden regen energy, we got black mist.) The reason I say I feel sorry for her is that... well, it feels like she didn't get to do very much this season. Yes, there is the increased mannerisms -her hanging out of the Tardis (like Eleven did in Day) and laughing, for instance- but in terms of actual action she feels like she has taken a backseat this year. The premiere was basically her being bossed around, she spent the Flood episodes locked in a room, she skipped Ashildir's second episode... It feels kinda strange, that for Clara's farewell season, this is really only one of a handful of episodes where she got to take part in the actual action.

So was I.Great trailer. The action scene at the end looked great. Really excited for this film.

I may have to rescind my upvote. I find it hard to believe that any relative of pony!Dick Grayson could be a jerk, no matter how distantly. But...a generation fic sounds like it could be really interesting (I considered something similar for an Fo:E fic). There's a lot of unexplored and undefined time between the big points of Equestria, so I'd like to see that idea!
