Long Game 14: To Shatter a Shard
Metacognition replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Hey guys, guess what? Remember how Joe was uber busy during the roll over for night two of this game and he never got around to doing a write up for it? Well, Hael fixed that for you. Granted, that was way back in the early turns of the game, so it likely won't affect what's going on here, but personally, the write ups are some of my favorite parts of these games and Hael's is pretty good! So, if you want to read what happened way back near the beginning, you can find the write up here!- 1225 replies

Mid-Range Game 8: Highborn Intrigue
Metacognition replied to Renegade's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I've used extensions as a GM myself, but they are something that I've thought about as well. As a GM, they're useful for not only giving everyone the chance to speak up, but also a way to give you more time to get everything ready. Seriously, our GMs are under a lot of pressure to not only analyze everything going on in a game (which is a lot. I mean they're going over every angle every turn to try to make sure that it's the best game possible), but also to present it to everyone in an understandable manner. They're under a lot of pressure is my point. But like Hero said, there's something to be said for the deadline. The fact that everyone only has so much time to make their case, and the clock is ticking down, is part of what makes the game so intense! You're not only fighting against the Eliminators, but also the deadline! You have to work with the knowledge you have at the time, whatever little bit that is and 90% of the time, an extension isn't going to give you much more to work from. You have to try to get what information you can during the time you have. There's no way to really set a hard rule on extensions and I wouldn't want to even if it was possible. Every game is different and each will have its own twists and turns. That said, I, like Hero, would also urge our GMs to be sparing with extensions. They have the insight to know when one is superfluous or not and can make that judgement in their games far better than anyone else could, so they deserve to have the final say. As far as the game was concerned: well played, Conspirators! This was a fun game to watch; especially since it was so close at the end! Those are always my favorites though. The corruption ability was brilliant, Ren and it played out amazingly. It's one that I would love to see in future games! And, even though they lost, the Nobles put up one heck of a fight! You guys didn't stop all the way up to the end, so you deserve to be proud of yourselves as well! Overall, just a great game. I wish I had joined in the fun!- 911 replies

I suggest putting it in the Art of Game Creation as well, so everyone has a chance to look it over, so people can catch any over powering issues. That said, you're kind of forcing my hand. Whether I wind up as Ryuk, L, or anyone else, as the self proclaimed "Holder of the Death Note Shard," there's no way I can skip this game when it comes up. Whether I do well or not, I'll make sure I'm in for this game!

Long Game 14: To Shatter a Shard
Metacognition replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Got to admit, it was a huge success either way. It's almost enough to make me state me overstate our satisfaction while watching this game. Sorry for the interruption. It's just that we do what we must, because we can. I assure you all though, that it is entirely for the good of all of us here. ....Well, expect those that are dead, of course. But there's no sense crying over every mistake. It happens after all, and you just gotta keep trying! Plus, I heard there was cake in the Dead Docs! -And I'm done. Couldn't help myself.- 1225 replies

As you said, we've had a few games that have taken place in non-Sanderson worlds, so you're don't have to use one of his worlds as a setting. As far as interest, I'll play in just about anything. Even if I haven't read the source material, I find that playing in those games tends to give me a greater appreciation for those worlds and thus it gives me a new series or book to read! I think the main thing that it comes down to when people determine on whether or not they'd play in a certain game or not is how the game is put together. As they said in Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come."
-
I'll put in a vote for Silverblade5 as well. .......But, I think we should come up with an entire new set of questions for him. The first few are great as they are, but we should try to throw him a curve ball on some of the later questions just because!

Long Game 14: To Shatter a Shard
Metacognition replied to Jo and the Bush's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Just a side note guys, but blue text is specifically for Out Of Game Discussion ONLY. It's for things like saying, "Sorry guys, but my dog is sick and so I have to be away from the game for a while." The reason for this is because NO ONE should be lying about what they say in blue text like that. If someone had a relative die or some other tragedy befall them, I don't think anyone wants to be wondering if that person is telling the truth or if they're just trying to gain sympathy so that people won't go after them. Using such things to appear innocent is against the Fair Play Rules anyways, but blue text is for things outside of the game only. Now, I understand that not everyone enjoys or wants to do any RPing. For some of us, the mind games are more than enough to occupy us without complicating it with the addition of RP and that's perfectly fine. That said, myself personally (I haven't checked with Wilson or Gamma on this so this isn't a direct ruling), I don't think there should be a designated color for the RP. That just encourages people to not read those sections. Considering that some people, like myself and Ren, have used strictly RP in the past to frame our arguments, this would discourage those types of play styles. Some people have hidden clues to their roles or hints about who they are suspicious of in RP before as well. The point is that, even if you don't want to RP yourself, the RP isn't just something that should be taken as separate from the player's arguments and can thus just be ignored. Sure, more than likely, people are just having fun with their character, but if you're here for the mind games, disregarding the RP means that you might miss something as well. As such, I, personally, would not like to have a designated color for RP. If you're ever unsure of what someone is trying to say, just ask. They might reveal more than they expected to via your questioning after all, which benefits you as well.- 1225 replies

Merged Hero's thread to here for now. The General Rules thread is a great place for these kinds of observations to begin with, as well as questions about the games in general, but beyond that, there are other factors that need to be taken into account. I'd go into detail, but it's late here and even I need to sleep sometime! Wilson should be on later to explain everything a lot better than I likely ever could anyways.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Metacognition replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
So I was in the bookstore today and I found a copy of the Rithmatist. It's one of the few books of Sanderson's that I haven't read yet since I rarely look in the teen fiction section. I'm about to walk away and pay for my entertainment for the weekend when I hear someone say, "does anyone know of any good teen fantasy books?" It was one of the employees and she was speaking into the headset bit that they wear to contact other employees. My curiosity was piqued so I stuck around. Evidently no one answered her, or no one knew of any good teen novels, because she went back to this older couple and shrugged. I edged a little closer and I hear the gentleman say something about just wanting something that didn't have vampires or anything like that. The employee chick just shrugged and said dejectedly that unfortunately, that's a common problem in teen fiction. It's at this time that I should point out that the copy of the Rithmatist that I was holding was the only copy they had. I walked up to the couple, handed them the Rithmatist, and told them, I quote, "Here ya go. Sanderson is just an amazing author and no vampires!" I then left to browse around for something else to read. I did later go back to check to see if they had replaced the book or not though. Apparently they didn't. You know you're a Sanderfan when you feel absolutely ecstatic at the idea that you might have just introduced someone new to the amazingness that is Brandon's works, but also a little sad that now you don't get to read the book yet! -
Kurkistan still lurks these waters every now and then, right? I'd like to hear his answers, especially since I've heard that his memory is legendary!

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Metacognition replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
This game is long past due to being locked up. I feel a bit self conscious about locking it up myself since I, and the rest of the Indomitable Dead Doc , did a lot to move the game forward while Aonar was away. It's like we were half GMs and half Spectators. I know we tried to be as fair as possible and I hope that we showed, at least a glimpse, of what kind of pressures our GMs are under in any given game by our commentary while we were in charge. It took quite a bit of work and that was between all of us. In a typical game, that type of pressure is solely on the GM! That's why I really want to thank Aonar for running this game. If we hadn't stepped up, he would've continued to be a consistent and a wonderful GM, even during his time away. That kind of resolve not only deserves to be recognized, but applauded, IMO. Of course, congrats to the Villagers. You guys played a great game! I really thought Bridge Boy and Joe had a chance there near the end, but Phatt and Twei were really on top of that. You two had them locked down for a few cycles before you finally decided to go for it! Macen is, as mentioned, either the luckiest Lightweaver ever or the unluckiest; depending on his objective! He still pulled off a huge upset for the villagers though! Congrats on being so unlucky that you're lucky again? Good luck with that kind of luck in the future! Now, as always, if anyone would like to try your hand at running a game, please get a hold of Gamma, Wilson or myself. Not only will we get you added to the list, but I'm sure we'd be more than willing to help out in any way we can as well! You can also ask questions and get some hints and feedback from everyone over here in our Art of Game Creation thread as well. With all the games that we've run so far, we have plenty of experienced GMs that can help you refine any game you're thinking about! Thanks again to everyone that played and we look forward to seeing you in future games!- 607 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Metacognition replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Two things guys: First, an extension has been called. As such, you have an extra 24 hours to get your actions in! Second, the write ups for the last day are done! These were done by two people: Shallan did Findilti's write up (and I must say, it is quite good!), while I wrote something for Em's (which is subpar in comparison to the awesome work everyone else has done this game, IMO!). That just leaves this turn's write up to get in and with the extension, hopefully we'll get it done before the end of the turn for once! :P- 607 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Metacognition replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Okay guys, Ren did an amazing job of finally giving us a finale for Fel, so you guys should definitely go check it out and then give him props for it. Especially since he did it right after getting his MR game all together and ready to go! We're also almost done with this turn's write up, so then we'll be all caught up to the events of today.- 607 replies

At first I was going to say that then the game basically hinges on who the Metallurgists side with, and while that's still the case to a degree, when I looked back over the roles, either side should have plenty of means of killing/disrupting the Metallurgists. The only difference being that the Venture has a bit of an advantage to put pressure on the Metallurgists early on. I could really see something like that working, especially if you had some pretty devious Metallurgists. They could technically go for a Metallurgist only win if they wanted to. The sharing of vials and everyone being able to get vials is something that I'd probably drop though, especially if you went with Hero's suggestion. It gives the Venture a lot more power and a lot less incentive to keep the Metallurgists alive. They just get vials for their most useful powers, stockpile them by having everyone get those vials, and then kill off the Metallurgists to keep the Conrads from getting any more vials. The sharing of vials is a lot like the Breath mechanic from LG4; it greatly benefits the Eliminators since they know who each other are. The Lurcher is difficult. With the way that Hero has it set up, it fits better, but it also gets too much information if you continue with the vial sharing. Not only does it work as a future (random) roleblock by stealing the vials, but if they get to know what the vial is, then they also work as an impromptu seeker. On top of that, they can then bargain with the stolen vial? That's a lot of power for one role. I like the idea of the steal though, so, if it were me, I'd drop the sharing of vials and the Lurcher doesn't get to find out what vial they stole or even if they stole one. They can't do anything with stolen vials. The role is then hampered in the early game, wondering if what they're doing is even doing any good. But, later in the game, once they know who some of the Venture are, the role can really shine. That's my thoughts.
-
I love the setting idea. It's a great look at the Houses that we've yet to see really played out! I'm not quite sure how this would work. The Metallurgists are other players, right? So doesn't that make them incredibly powerful? They'd know who is an Allomancer and, after a few cycles, they'd also know what those allomancer's powers are, right? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the Seeker and Tineye (which I like this take on the Tineye).

Each Format, as Wilson mentioned above has its own duration. For example: A Quick Fix will typically last around a week, give or take. So, if there's not a game up when you check in, there should be one up before too terribly long! Another thing you can do is click the "Follow" Button for the entire SE subforum. This will alert you to any new threads that are created there. The only new threads are typically either the next cycle or turn for a currently running game and new games. It's a helpful tool. As far as whether or not you've had the chance to read the books from that world, it's not nearly the roadblock that you'd think it would be. I've never gotten the chance to read The Rithmatist yet and I wound up playing a game based on that book. We tend to use the setting of the books, but we don't get into a lot of spoiler-ific stuff in any given game. We're also incredibly accommodating when it comes to such things, so if you want to try your hand at a game, but haven't read the books yet, let the GM and the other players know and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to be careful about any spoilers. I'd still suggest reading them because they're great, but they're not a necessity to play any of our games. So feel free to sign up and join in on the mayhem!

I've shirked my duties here long enough. My only condolence is that it's been because we've been busy with other stuff. Well, unfortunately, Ren stole my answer to the first one. I fully expect that he somehow got it directly out of my brain so that he could sabotage me for some unknown nefarious reason. I'm on to you, Ren! Probably the most surprising would be anyone that I've met outside of the forum; even if it was just one another site like Facebook. I just don't really see what the point would be to maintaining the charade up to that point and it seems like it would be a lot more work for little gain. The least surprising would be people like yourself, Wyrm, or Ren. Basically, anyone that is really good at coming up with believable characters and is capable of some fantastic RP. I just don't think Brandon would be able to disguise his mastery of storytelling, even if it was something written hastily and on a whim for a simple game and I highly doubt that he could purposefully make his storytelling less than what he's capable of in an attempt to keep people from noticing. As far as what would likely happen.... Well, I know that I'd have to take a shot at him at least once, even if I wasn't an Eliminator. It's not everyday that you'd be able to say that you killed your favorite writer after all! I think that the first few games after he revealed would be just hectic attempts to kill him and everyone with a protection ability defending him. After that though, I'd bet everything would pretty much go back to normal. That's one of the things that I love about this game. It doesn't really matter how famous you are or how much money you have; what matters is whether or not you can figure out the subtle clues to find the Eliminators or, if you're an Eliminator, how good you are at manipulating others into thinking that you're innocent. This means that everyone is basically on an equal playing field at the start of each new game. I think most of our players understand that and they'd take Sanderson's word with as much of a pinch of salt as anyone else's once the excitement calmed down. Those first few games after the reveal though.... those would be insane. Would that work? Cause if that would work, even I'd probably have to give it a shot! I think that after awhile, Sanderson would fall into a similar pattern to what I've noticed happen with myself and the other Mods. For awhile (especially in the beginning), we get killed early just the giggles of taking out someone with authority. Then people started catching on to that pattern, so people wound up protecting us to prevent that. So then the Eliminators started going after other people first and the protectors started to protect randomly again. Which left us open to be attacked first again, so the Eliminators do so. And thus the cycle continues. I do think that you'd probably stand a better chance of getting into one of his books by consistently saving him rather than murdering him though. Build up some brownie points as it were. Did.... Did you just threaten Sanderson to GM one of our games? I don't know if we'd want that in the first place. With as crazy and bloodthirsty as these games can be, I wouldn't be surprised if he just let Odium run amok on us and killed everyone on the first day! That said, it would be a glorious death!

Quick Fix Game 9: The Court of The Gods
Metacognition replied to Gamma Fiend's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I'm just making sure that next time you have some incentive to try to keep me alive! I did say that it's just a good chance, not that it is definitely you. At best, it might make people look at what you say a little closer. At worst, I have someone to talk to in the dead doc sooner!- 271 replies

Mid-Range Game 7: Eighty Splendid Suns
Metacognition replied to Kasimir's topic in Sanderson Elimination
With the latest QF finishing up and the fact that there hasn't been any discussion in here for over a week, I think it's time to finally put this game to rest. Thank you Kas for running this game. I know you think it had some problems, but from what I can see, 90% of the difficulties in this game didn't come from you or your design. I do hope you give GMing another shot in the future, as there were some amazing concepts in this game and I look forward to seeing what else you come up with. With the QF finishing up, that means that we should have a MR game starting soon and, if you're more of an observer, the LG is still in full swing! Best of luck to everyone in your future games!- 665 replies

Quick Fix Game 9: The Court of The Gods
Metacognition replied to Gamma Fiend's topic in Sanderson Elimination
The secret to Wyrm's success? Kill me early. Twei wound up mentioning in the Dead Doc how similar this game was to MR3 and it really was. In that game, Wyrm and I got into it early and I wind up dead. I then spend the rest of the game convinced that Wyrm is an Eliminator but without the ability to do anything (that pesky being dead thing) and wonder why no one took my suspicions seriously. We even had the lynch of an Eliminator on the first day in that game too! And the Eliminators won that one as well. So the moral of the story is this: The key to Evil Wyrm winning seems to start with my death every time; so if we're in a game together and I wind up dead, there's a good chance that Evil Wyrm is the culprit! GG everyone. Raven, you did a great job. You will definitely be a formidable player here, IMO. Vauhsoj, you were the only Rebel I didn't wind up sniffing out eventually, so bravo! And of course, amazing job Phat, but then you know I was rooting for you the entire time!- 271 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Metacognition replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
I have done my very best to try to keep things as consistent with how Aonar has run them, to the point that I've been going back through previous cycles to see how he worded things. As such, if someone had been attacked, but survived, it would mentioned in the results. There is a mini write up done and edited in that might help clarify things.- 607 replies

Long Game 13: Traitors on the Plains
Metacognition replied to Aonar's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Day Seven: Learn to Swim As the sun went down, a storm swept through. The storm father must have been very upset, because the storm lasted the whole night and was so powerful no one dared venture out in it. No one died! Radiants and Squires are recharged. Everyone has (note the change in time due to me being behind in posting this) 47 hours for the day.- 607 replies
