  1. I wonder if the Hunters in general are from another planet? There's a WoB which states that Iyatil is "from" a planet, but that's not where she's "originally" from.
  2. While I was reading Secret History Ire part, I was under the impression that, while those were Elantrians, that wasn't Sel. The fortress may have been an outpost for them, but the Cognitive Reflection of Sel has the Dor floating around all over the place, and I've seen it likened to plasma unless I'm mistaken. That's why it is so dangerous to Worldhop around there. The Ire's potions seem to be small amounts of the Dor that they bring places to be portable so that they retain their powers away from home.
  3. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nk1knyqmqLI92y83ROAjNXUTMgmQzWV2k49XRHmO5S4/edit?pref=2&pli=1#gid=0 We just had a thread the other day talking about this. They made a handy spreadsheet to list possible combos.
  4. I've actually put a lot of thought into this. Elantris was Brandon's first (published) book, and also the first we've seen chronologically, so I put that one first. It is a fantastic novel in its own right, but in my opinion, they keep getting better and better as they go along, so if you neglected to read Elantris until after, say, Stormlight Archive, you might be disappointed. The Emperor's Soul comes next for a few reasons. 1: It introduces the Realmatic Theory very well. In a first read through of the Cosmere, it might be nice to have that knowledge, especially when it comes to dealings with the Cognitive Realm later on. 2: It's on the same world as Elantris. 3: It's quite short, so it's less intimidating for introducing people to the Cosmere. Mistborn Era 1: The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages. As far as I know, that's where it sits chronologically as well. Followed by Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell for another 'short break' between big books. Warbreaker, since it is intended as a prelude to Stormlight Archive, and I'm pretty sure it's after Stormlight Archive (Arc 1) Since the break between books 5 and 6 is when Alloy of Law era is. (Yes, I know only two books are out so far, but that's where I'd put it unless something changes.) Mistborn Era 2: The Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning, The Lost Metal (The last of these also isn't out yet). Mistborn: Secret History. Please read this AFTER the first Mistborn Trilogy at the VERY least. Preferably after Bands of Mourning and (SH spoiler:) Sixth of the Dusk. This is last in chronology so far, so it makes sense to read it last.
  5. I've seen some speculation saying that they are Svrakiss from Sel, and that Trell is Dominion. Svrakiss are said to take over bodies somehow, but I don't know if we've seen them on screen. Another possibility is that they are agents of Odium, and have a spren possessing them. Less spoilery title next time?
  6. They could turn Wayne into a Kandra though. And then they'd be an immortal pair.
  7. Autonomy + Dominion = Democracy? + Devotion would be something like a Benevolent king who loves his people and rules with goodness. Cultivation + Preservation = Prosperity Endowment + Honor = Obligation These are surprisingly tough to think of.
  8. Please only post theories regarding spoilers for Secret History in its spoiler board, with {Secret History Spoilers} in the title. Thank you.
  9. What if Ym's religion is not based off of the Shattering, but after Adonalsium's Investiture. Think about it, Adonalsium created the original humans, and presumably the first planet. Everything he made was made with Investiture. The Shards continued this after the Splintering, but what if that's what Investiture really was? Adonalsium experiencing his creation.
  10. I would direct you here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/52690-unknown-shards-and-opposition-in-the-cosmere/ We have been talking about exactly that for the past week and a lot of good ideas have come up.
  11. Honor is currently Splintered, but it is theoretically possible to "put it back together." The Stormfather is a Cognitive reflection of the original Vessel, Tanavast, he didn't actually pick it up himself. The thing is, we've already seen Ascension to Vessels in Mistborn, and it would be somewhat disappointing for each series to end the same way. If Dalinar were to Ascend however, I've no doubt that Brandon will do it differently than he did in Mistborn. I have theorized before that Hoid intends for Dalinar to put Adonalsium back together, because of their conversation about "taking apart a man and putting him back together."
  12. Maybe Fortune is a very large splinter of a Shard, large enough to have its own sprout-off Intent.
  13. I haven't read them, so I just grouped them together since I know they are all before Elantris.
  14. Maybe he's awaiting his copy of Bands and doesn't want to be spoiled?
  15. Gonna post my reactions before I read through the rest of yours. First of all, wow! Cosmere stuff galore! Now, from the beginning: There were tears when Kell held Vin's face after he died. Okay, "Fuzz's" clothing is certainly interesting. I didn't realize how much I'd missed Kelsier. We finally know why Kell hates Hoid! Ha! Just because of a (rather terrible) insult! And I never would have expected Hoid to be so brutal to Kell. Okay, so Worldhopping works by going into the Cognitive Realm fully, and the only way most people can do that is my finding a Shardpool, which Worldhoppers call Perpendicularities. Cool. So they can't teleport (usually), they actually have to travel all that distance. So, since Demoux becomes a Worldhopper later, I guess he can just use the Shardpool, right? He doesn't need some kind of fancy magic like Jasnah. I wonder if you can cross over to another world when you're only partially in Shadesmar. Kell's reaction to Dox and Clubs' deaths. Whole Khriss and Nazh scene reactions, spoilered for length: The Ire. They died but did not. Shaod? I got very very excited when I realized Kell was going not to South Scadrial, but to another planet. Awe. Poor Fuzz. Spiritual Realm!!! Ooooh! Kelsier seems to have mastered what Shallan could not. Fire. I wonder what planet this is? The Ire are obviously Sellish, but seem to be a secret society. I don't think this is actually Sel's Cognitive Realm, since there's no Plasma floating around. Maybe they're camped on a minor Shardworld. Some possible connections I thought of involving the Ire: Also, Fortune? I suppose it could be a new Shard... if the Ire are collecting them, I wonder how many they have? Totally love how Kell scared them! Fantastic! And back to Scadrial. Love the parallels with HoA. Vin with Hoid!!! So THAT's why she felt uneasy. It's so sad to picture that though. All this time, Kell's watching out for her. And there is the answer to when Kell held Preservation. Cool. And Spook. My favourite person in HoA. Kell was so sweet with him. Poor kid. Vin and Elend! We finally get some closure with their deaths. Kell's sticking around and Saze won't let him back to the Physical Realm. Ruin said something about Vax, which I think was a Shardworld mentioned in the Elantris Ars Arcanum. What made him ask that? Spook and Kell gonna work together? I'm all for more Kelsier adventures! And I for one have no problem with Spook experimenting with Hemalurgy. Perhaps we'll be seeing him again too. This book made me so happy. Thank you so much, Brandon!
  16. Entering the Spiritual Realm is what Elend did when he burned Atium with Duralumin.
  17. I asked Brandon if Devotion and Odium were opposites, and he said that there were arguments that I could make for that to be the case.
  18. I suppose that we agree then. Although I think Shard pairs are still mostly opposing, they won't cancel each other out as perfectly as Ruin and Preservation. Welcome to the Shard, Justice, and have your first upvote! I thought of Grace too, but for some reason I dismissed it. If Devotion isn't the Shard opposing Odium, then Grace could be the one.
  19. This WoB would seem to contradict that:
  20. So, I just asked Brandon on the twitter chat if Odium and Devotion were opposites, and he replied that "an argument could be made for that to be the case" or along those lines. So I sarcastically asked if that was a RAFO. I don't know. This could imply that they aren't actual opposites, which could fuel the fire for an Honor/Odium pair, or imply that my theory has merit. Thanks for your half answer, Brandon.
  21. @Pagerunner, don't want to quote because of length, but I will respond. First of all, upvote for being so well thought out, even if I don't completely agree. On Wisdom, I did include that, with its possible opposite being Arrogance, which would include egotism, self-glorifying, and even ignorance. On Shards not relating to their magics, that is true, but I think you misjudged the powers from from Initiation. Firstly, we need to keep in mind (which I've been forgetting too) that the Knight Radiant Orders and Spren are on a sort of "slide scale" from Honor to Cultivation. Dalinar and Kaladin are more on the Honor side of the scale, and Lift and Shallan would be on the Cultivation side of the scale. The spren only come to those who exhibit behavior and values that line up with that spren's order. What you said above, that the powers don't reflect the Shard, is true; Changing gravity at will has nothing to do with Honor, however, gaining those powers requires you to follow values, and as you said above, give oaths. I would argue that Endowment only Returns individuals whom she feels are worthy in the way that they died, which is what I remember from the book. You can only (originally) use Ruin's magic if you're willing to destroy someone in the hopes of gaining what they had, and you can only Snap when you've had a trauma, which seems to me a lot like "self preservation," in that you only Snap when you really need it. On Justice, I would say it really is part of Honor. Consider a god saying to his people "Do not do this or you will be punished like this." He would then have made an oath or contract with them about a certain thing. Honorable people wouldn't do the thing which they aren't supposed to, and Dishonorable people get punished when they do. However, the Order of the Skybreakers is halfway between Honor and Cultivation, so I suppose it's possible for us to get a Justice Shard. I personally don't think it's likely though, as I suspect we will be seeing a ton about Justice and Mercy in Stormlight Archive. It would be redundant to make a Shard devoted to that, when that very aspect is created by combining Honor and Cultivation. On Devotion/Love, yes they are different, but in the same way that Honor and Justice are different. Brandon has very carefully chosen his Shard's names, in that they all include a few different things. Devotion can include love. If you are wholeheartedly devoted to something, there is a very good chance that you love it. Keep in mind that WoB referenced a few times on the last page, which states that some Shards don't have exact opposites as Ruin and Preservation did. I take this to mean that, when combined, not all of these pairs would perfectly cancel each other out. I think that most people agree that Dominion and Autonomy are opposites. When combined, I feel like they would make the intent of a good ruler. Something like Democracy, perhaps. Like how the God of Christianity created man, and has Dominion over them, but since He loves them, he chooses to give them Free will. So, while opposite, they don't cancel out. Devotion; which includes Love, and Odium; which includes Hate, in my mind make good opposites, but not as closely as others, which is totally okay as per WoB. All that said, You had a very well thought out post, and I like the bit about Shard flaws. I hadn't thought about that before. In "The Letter" they referenced Rayse to holding "God's own divine Hatred, separated from the virtues which gave it context." If Odium were combined with all the other Shards, it could be "The hatred of _____." Nice work
  22. This refers to a WoB which says that Ruin and Cultivation would make a good pair, because Ruin can create one thing in order to destroy two things later. Cultivation's Intent would help him do this a lot better. Why the downvote? I wasn't meaning to be rude, I just couldn't remember the WoB and wanted confirmation. I thought of both of those too, but figured both Justice and Mercy are part of Honor. Justice I've mentioned a few times before, and mercy, even though it does contradict Justice in some ways, goes hand in hand with it. Kaladin has had several choices between vengeance and mercy, and he is just one of the orders. There is an entire order devoted to justice, so I couldn't see it being its own Shard, in my opinion. With Jealousy/Envy, it would fit under Odium's intent. Odium is all things like hatred, disgust, jealousy, and mistrust, etc, which is why I didn't include it. Thank you. I did notice that about Immutability, but I think there's a distinction. I think of Preservation as a Stasis chamber, and Immutability as a rock that can't change no matter what, something that always will be and doesn't need Preservation. I also think this could be the Shard that isn't on a planet.
