The difference might be slight, but I was specifically talking about people with knowledge of threats of eternal punishment from alternative religions. Szeth isn't presented with an alternative world-view, and thought Taravangians arguments were weak, they were logical, and Szeth was pretty much insane at this point. Szeth was fanatically following the tenants of his society, but I submit that he might not have taken Taravangians word for it quite as easily if he hadn't been as unbalanced, which would again force him to really reconsider his faith in the Shamanate.

I concede that Coinpushing might be somewhat stronger than many of us have argued, but I do posit that it would not give Kelsier an automatic win. Dalinar is savvy enough to rapidly understand what successive volleys would do to his Plate, and would likely go hide behind something that would give him sufficient protection against it. And then we're back to the stale-mate.

Was this ever stated in the book?

I think what Moogle was suggesting was that fabrialmaking might be a type of Hemalurgy. Fabrials work by trapping Spren (Spiritual matter) and attaching them to a metal framwork, which does smack somewhat of how Hemalurgic spikes work. If this is true, than if Ruin and Preservation hadn't made the Metallic Arts, than fabrials would not be possible on Roshar. I find the connection tenuous, at best, but he just might be on to something.

It is a bit of a Strawman argument, true, at least in the way I formulated it. I Have had, though, many conversations with people who are completely baffled that I do not take the threat of Hell seriously, so while that might not be the primary reason people adhere to a religion, one would assume that it is at least part of the equation. But I feel like we are digressing from the original topic, and I am not sure the is the right forum for this type of discussion. I am way to fond of discussing religion for my own good, and while I don't think the subject should not be given a special protection against criticism as we would never give other topics, this is hardly the avenue for it. Just to get back on track, Szeth is Shin, and it is clear that his people have some deep-seated beliefs and values that other people would find strange at best, positively despicable at worst. But this is how he was raised, and convictions can be very hard to let go of. If he was taught that non-existence is a worse hell than eternal torture, then I do not have any difficulties believing why he would act and think as he does.

It perplexes me how so many can take the threat of eternal punishment from their respective religion so seriously, yet disregard all other similar claims from other religions as laughable.

I don't think it would happen in the same way for Knights Radiant (though maybe in Lift's quite unique case). If Lightwieavers and Elscallers turned crystallized from Soulcasting, you can bet the Vorin Church would have used it to discredit them post-Recreance. The KR are described as arrogant and maleficent, but I don't remember them being described as having a monstrous appearance as well. I suppose "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence", but I think the Nahel Bond would protect them from these effects. The effects we see upon modern Soulcasters could also be an effect from an inherent misuse of the fabrials. Little is known about the ancient Soulcaster-fabrials, and it is possible that the Ardents are just using them in an incorrect way, which results in the horrifying effects that were revealed in the Words of Radience.

Though one is designed specifically with a pointy end to increase the localised force of impact, the other is currency with a random point of impact. unless the coin is lucky enough to hit exactly on it's thin side, the angle of the impact is likely to make it hit with its flat side. In fact, when I think about it, unless Luthadelian coins are shaped differently from ours, I fail to see how you could kill even an unprotected person so easily with it.

That's... a really cool observation, and likely to be true, I think.

If that is correct, then it is actually quite the clever pun.

You might have invented the art of Listmaking, but I perfected it. There is so much more to Lists than a simple bullet-points. There is categorisation, the skipping of the line to increase readability. What you have done is just summing up a bunch of observations. What I would have done, would be to separate the ones in favour of the theory and the ones who are against into to neat and lucid categories. And I would have bolded the names of the Orders to make each of them clear and distinct. Poke the dragonMaster of Lists and be prepared to unleash his fury!

I think he's talking about Nalan, whose real name is Nale. I don't know where he is getting the Bent part from, though. I wouldn't read too much into the use of the word "Surgebindings" instead of "Surges", by the way. I do, however, think that you are on to something by pointing out that widening the "fissures" too much could be dangerous. I don't however, necessarily think it might make it easier for Odium to influence you, though. This was a major theme of Mistborn, and while it wouldn't be unthinkable for Brandon to reuse the theme, I think he is going more for the theme of a broken spirit or soul. What does it mean to be broken? How does that affect you? Is it possible to heal a broken soul? If anything, a broken soul would make you unstable. Maybe more open to outside influences, but not direct control.

Which is why I am holding back my disappointing smirk until I've read the next book. While I might not immediately like or see where this is going, I respect Brandon enough to just go with it and see where it leads.

Why do you call him "Bent" Nale?

You might be right there, but I still think a symbolic death would have sufficed. Nothing quite like an actual death and subsequent resurrection to rub in a "death and rebirth" motive.

Then why didn't he just change it? It would only take a rewrite of like, three pages or so.

By that definition, we are all time travellers. I wouldn't really categorise Sliding and Pulsing aren't really about time travel in my book, but about time manipulation. And yes, Bloodfalcon, he does seem to have done a 180o on that one. I can understand Jasnah, as she has still got a story to tell, but she needed to be removed so that Shallan could grow, but his demise at the hands of Kaladin would have been more or less a perfect end to Szeth's character arc. I think his PoV book could easily have been about his backstory (as it will be), all the while keeping him relevant by letting him cast a long shadow over Roshar with the after-effects of his rampage. Another acceptable end to it would have him to just run away from Kaladin, as it would have fitted well with the "coward" theme, and the next book could then be about him coming to terms with that. His resurrection was kind of stupid, and it only really served to make Surgebinding seem a bit over-powered. I do love that he has teamed up with the Skybreakers, though, and that he has gained Nightblood.

I have reached the rank of Sentient Awakened Object, and I can confirm that I was still Truthless at 999 and that the shift occurred at 1000. And Storms, that green box is obnoxiously big.
