  4. Hello Folks. I don't want to alarm anyone, but while we all find this thread quite amusing and do not want to ruin any good natured fun, I do feel like a cautionary word is necessary. I want to reassure everyone that no one is in trouble. While we all know this is fun and games, there are some implicit misconceptions here about who we are as a staff that I just want to clear up. First off (hopefully you all know and realize this, or we haven't been doing our jobs), our moderation team is here to make this community better. Our goal is never to get people in trouble or 'scare people'. Believe me, if the staff never had to step in, that would make us very very happy. We are here to help and support our membership, not crush you with our hammers of ban. Jokes aside, I sincerely hope all of you know that the staff are here to help, and that you can always come to us with a concern. That leads me to my second point: being contacted by the moderation team, or having a group of moderators reading a thread you are participating in does NOT mean you are in trouble. There are a lot of reasons why we review threads. To be transparent about our process, what usually happens is that a member of the staff will see something they want more opinion on, and will link it in our staff discord. Then, others will click the link to check things out, and offer input if they have any. Maybe we decide as a group that we need to message some people or post in thread, or maybe we just want to enjoy the link that was shared together collectively. I know that seeing "[Insert all Staff here]" on the "Recently Browsing" section can be intimidating, but it really does not have to be. If you are contacted by the staff and are informed that there is an issue with something posted, please understand that we are almost always more than willing to work with people to correct issues as they arise, and explain why we are stepping in. Aside from spam and highly offensive content, I cannot think of a time we have ever jumped straight to banning someone. In my experience, we almost always try a progressive form of discipline, and our goal is always to correct behavior so we can move forward together, not to force people out of the community. If you have ever noticed someone being banned, in a high majority of cases there have been extensive private messages back and forth, with staff giving the member an opportunity to explain themselves, and providing extensive advice on how to correct behavior. Usually a ban will only result if the member blatantly refuses to listen to staff, or an issue continues to come up with no evidence that the member is trying to improve. We absolutely understand that break-downs in communications happen. I want to reassure everyone here that if you are participating here in good faith, and honestly don't mean to hurt anyone, if a staff member reaches out to you about something you've written, they will be more than willing to talk and work with you on it. We are not out to get you. Next - please remember that we are human and fans just like you. All of us, even Chaos, started out in this community as fans just like you are. I remember being mortified on Time Waster's Guide when a prominent moderator commented on my frequent spelling mistakes. Know that we are coming from a place of trying to help you succeed here, while defending the comfort and enjoyment of others. Lastly, we totally understand that this thread is all fun and games, but any time you are meme-ing real people, please do so gently. While it's normal to tease close friends, on the internet sometimes it's easy to feel like you know someone well when they might not know your intentions at all. Every member of the staff works very hard to make the 17th Shard a fun place to be. We can definitely take a joke now and then, but please keep the people behind the bold letters in mind when you are writing. Anyways, as usual I've gone on long enough. Please do keep posting here, and feel free to ask questions if you have any about what I have written above.

  6. Anyone else up for posting here during tonight's episode. I'm loving the Halloween costumes.
  7. Spoilers ep 113 Maybe anyone is interested can post in here Thursdays, and then we can get a chat going? Or we could start a discord channel?
  8. Would anyone here who watches live be interesting in a CR 17th Shard watching party. I tend to watch reactions on discord, Tumblr, and twitter, but find it a little overwhelming. A smaller group might be fun. I agree that the recent cliff hangers have been nuts!
  9. An update regarding the inactive status of Mistborn: the Inquisition. Text for easy reading:
  10. This is what I get for not keeping up with the forums. Proud gay disaster here who loves all certified gay disasters. Here's my list (in reading order): [DISCLAIMER - this is for FUN!][Spoilers]
  11. So here's a fun Rashendi concept - you know how Ruin appears to Vin as Reen and others? What if he appears to The Lord Ruler as Alendi? The potential complicated emotions sound delicious to me, but I am curious what other's people's thoughts are. Might be inspiration for a short follow-up fic.
  12. It was fun for me, so I'm just glad other people enjoy it!
  13. Still working my way through the entire post, but Brandon has commented on the question of a Trans Returned before, so I thought I would share: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/109/#e1411
  14. Truthwatcher here For ways to refer to a group of Truthwatchers, might I suggest something like a conclave, convocation, congress, symposium, forum, conventicle, or assembly? Some fun flavour text from WoR ch 52:
  15. Many shards are nouns used to describe verbs though? Preservation is "to preserve", Ruin is "to ruin", Cultivation is "to cultivate", Endowment is "to endow". I know this isn't a universal pattern, but enough of them fall into that category that I do not see the fact that the noun is describing a verb to be exclusionary.
  16. I've been scrolling through synonyms, and I think the fave I've come up with so far is divine "Lamentation". It feels shard-ish to me, and I like that a lot of the shards have 'ion' endings. Also, my headcanon for the vessel of this shard is absolutely Blue Diamond from Stephen Universe. The way the voice actress delivers the line "You cannot fathom how much I've mourned, what thousands of years of grief have done to me" always kills me. (spoilers if you haven't watched the show).
  17. I'm assuming that the Lord Ruler, compounding nicrosilminds filled with investiture, could probably last quite a while wielding nightblood with proper preparation.
  18. Just a note that this topic was initially posted twice in two different places - responses have been merged into one single topic, and discussion can continue here.
  19. In reply to @Elegy's comment - we definitely recognize that Brandon's books may have political themes, and that there will be discussions on those themes. At times, those discussions will be very important. We have tried to build some flexibility into our moderation policies and practices to recognize that the line is not always a clear one. Where I personally start to see an issue, and will start consulting with other staff members about how to respond, is when people move beyond "this is a theme I see in Brandon's work, let's discuss how he deals with it, and what our feelings are" to positional debates about general issues that--aside from the origin of the discussion--have nothing to do with Brandon or the community. That is where we tend to see the the most escalation in terms of personal attacks and arguments which just go around and around without accomplishing anything. Hope this helps in understanding.
  20. Hey everyone. Thank-you all for the efforts to be respectful. I am just popping in to remind everyone that the subject of this thread is Brandon's response to the currently ongoing BLM movement. There are other places on the internet to discuss or debate the nature of conservatism, so please try to stay on topic here. Thank-you.
  21. That second response is soo Brandon. He's definitely more of a "write an essay" type of guy. Glad to see a response from him.
