I had taken the reason he could take in Stormlight as Breath to be that he was able to absorb one type of pure Investiture and thus was able to take any kind and use it as he wants. I don't know that a Nahel bond needs to be a part of it.

Clancy, don't you know? Olorin is another of the many names of Gandalf the Grey, also known as the Grey Pilgrim! But welcome Olorin. Always nice to meet another aspect of myself!

Wait, we're not actually glimpsing real things??? My life is a lie!

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
GreyPilgrim replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Whenever you think of Shards when someone says the name of one. -
Hoid, possibly. If the Epilogue Taln I'd the real Taln, then Hoid could well have done something with him. However, I don't think that that is the real Taln either. Hoid refers to him as "confused" and "unfortunate", as if he has been placed in a situation that he shouldn't have been.

Oh how I wish this could be a real thing...

Well, relating to Earth food in the cosmere, since we know that Hoid loves bacon, I hope there's a rep relating to that!

The great thing about Brandon is that literally everything has the potential to be more than cool world building, and in his mind nothing probably is. Everything has a purpose! Without all those random hints, what would we Sharders have to dissect?

Does there even have to have been an actual Scadrian waffle cook?? I don't really care. My only hope is that one day I can reach 1111 rep and get it. Alas, that day is far from now if ever it will come.

The greatest thing is that we still have over 30 new reps to discover! I think Scadrian Waffle Cook has to be my new favorite.

He wrote the whole story during his long time in college, then began to rewrite it for publication. I believe the new version is significantly different and longer than the original. For some reason I have it in my head that Auri was not part of the original version.

Challenge accepted. Hey baby, why don't you see me, 'cause I'm your Nightwatcher, but you won't get no curse from me.

Very interesting. I wonder if that system has planets all named in order of their distance from the sun. That planet does have some odd naming conventions already, so I am not surprised by seeing more.

The general belief here at the moment, as can be seen in that thread, is that this man is not Taln. It is entirely possible. Brandon is being evil and messing with our heads, but I personally don't believe that. And welcome! I hope to see you around.

I personally don't read a lot of fan fiction, mostly because as has been said the vast majority of it is young writers playing around with craft, rarely putting out good results. I do however believe that there is a place for it. In my experience, the hardest thing about starting to learn to write is finding ideas. I can't tell you how many times I have decided to write something but just couldn't think of anything to write about, particularly since, being a fantasy fan, anything I want to write would be fantasy and thus requires a greater concept than much other literature. I'm sure many people have experienced the same thing. Fan fiction can provide a solution for this. You already have the world set out for you, and a bunch of potential characters. This allows a writer to work with his or her craft so that when he or she finally gets a great idea, it can be written well. I agree that fan fiction has the potential to hamper creativity. The problem is that many fanfic writers, even those writing it in the same situation I just described, simply grab characters right out of the original book and use them. This can be done well, of course. One can choose to provide a different point of view on the character, to show him or her in a different light, or be creative with that character. But in the vast majority of fanfic I have read this is not the case. So I believe that writing fan fiction is a great way to develop one's writing craft as well as creativity, as long as one does not simply regurgitate what one's favorite authors have already done. A world already created has great potential. One does not have to use preexisting characters. One can instead create new ones that fit perfectly into the world they are writing in. You're right, Quiver, that Brandon's writing in the Wheel of Time was in several ways fanfic. He had long been a fan. The main differences of course are first that he was already a fairly well established writer and second that what he wrote was published as books in the series and totally canon. I also want to note how there are several examples now of fan fiction being truly published. What is any Star Wars or Star Trek novel you see in the book store? I also seem to remember that High Howey, author of Wool opened the world up to others to write in, and that I believe is becoming a thing too. To those who believe like GRRM: Fanfic is a good way for writers to develop their writing. It is not inherently evil. It has benefits and disadvantages, but overall I will apply my general belief about the world, which is to let people do what they want to do as long as it's not directly harmful to anyone, and do what I want to do, regardless of what others believe.

Nalthis has Splinters in the form of Divine Breaths. Scadrial does not have any Splinters. I do not believe Nightblood is considered a Splinter. He was Awakened with a massive pool of normal Breaths placed into a sword. I don't think we know exactly how he gained sentience, but I believe his creation makes him different than a Splinter. From what we have seen thus far, Splinters are created directly from Shards, meaning that it is a fragment of power that was once part of the Shard itself's power. Normal Breaths are not Splinters, so their being pooled into a greater power that gains sentience does not necessarily make it a Splinter. Late edit: Apparently there is WoB that Nightblood is a Splinter, and that anything with enough Investiture becomes one, so basically disregard this post.
-
My understanding is that the Divine Breaths are also Splinters. Does that mean that they are sentient in and of themselves? About Vin and The Lord Ruler, that just means that Leras was not holding Preservation while they were at the Well of Ascension, does it not? I wonder what that was like for him.

Who knew Superman was a Coinshot?

On the white text: The more complex the better! Let us all confuse ourselves--together!

The cosmere has finally been solved! Although, I guess this doesn't bode well for out favorite Rosharans... Too bad.
-
It looks kind of like a Power Ranger. Very cool, though!

Welcome, Arin! Well at least you caught the name Hoid repeating, it took me a while before I even noticed it. Hope to see you around!

Question for Brandon (this weekend)
GreyPilgrim replied to Asha'man Logain's topic in Events and Signings
That was just me misreading the question. I thought he was asking if Mat was healed because of his luck or because of the dagger. -
Oh storms, they're old and still feel the need to assert dominance and supposedly more powerful than the Cobalt Guard. Great. Yeah, Brandon says they're not a threat, but that doesn't really mean anything. If anything it means they're more of a threat.

Question for Brandon (this weekend)
GreyPilgrim replied to Asha'man Logain's topic in Events and Signings
I think he is referring to Mat's death in Book 4. Been a long time since I read that one, so I don't remember the details, but I don't think it can be attributed to his being a ta'veren. Could be wrong though, of course.
