The Unmade are Odium's prison; or, Odinalsium
GreyPilgrim replied to Shaggai's topic in Stormlight Archive
Very good idea. It seems to fit very well with the evidence you've presented. Basically, you're proposing that somewhere along the line, Odium was Splintered, and each Unmade took up the power of one of these Splinters? I have a couple thoughts about that. First, a Splinter has its own consciousness, based on what we've seen before. The only Splinters in human bodies we've seen yet are Returned. But one has to die in order to Return, and the Returned are actively created by Endowment. If what you propose is correct, Odium would have been Splintered against his will and would not have given away his power like that. Also, the holders of the Unmade likely didn't die if they were willingly trying to stop Odium, unless their thinking was wrong and that is why they have come into his power and are now doing his work. But there also does not seem to be any way to Splinter part of a Shard's power without breaking all of it unless you are the Shard, as Odium did with Honor, Devotion, and Dominion. But still, cool idea. -
Well, I'll start by saying (though it may not count for much in your eyes) I don't think that we should use the amount of time before the first post as an indication of whom we should be voting for, even if we don't intend to lynch yet. I was merely excited to begin the game, so I took the first change I got after receiving my PM to do a little RP. We should definitely not lynch anyone today. We have so little information to go on, as only a few have made non-RP posts yet. Meta, you say that if we lynch, the Spy cannot be sure of anyone they scan. Maybe I'm just confused, but I don't really understand that reasoning. Can you please explain it? Here are my thoughts on what will happen during the night: Whoever has the Shardblade will do nothing. There is very little to go on and it is pretty useless to run the risk of killing an innocent. However, anyone with Shardplate or a Half-shard will use it, in order to defend just in case. The Pain Knife will also most likely not be used, also because of lack of information, unless someone with it really suspects someone already. The Soulcaster and Grandbow are similarly useless right now. No spanreeds will be used during the night, since there is no point in starting discussion during the night and they probably won't know whom to trust yet. Anyone with an Alerter will definitely use it. That is pretty much a given, as well as the Bracelet being used, since they only help one. The Thief may try to steal something, the only reason not to being possibly found out by the Emotion Bracelet. However, they are unlikely to succeed in stealing anything quite yet. Obviously the GBs will kill someone. That is given. The Antifabrian risks giving a GB something, so they will do nothing. Finally, the Spy will spy. Obvious. The night will provide several players with important information. From there, we can proceed to lynching. But for today, I advocate no lynching.

You should feel Honor for your Cultivation of the List! One can only hope nobody feels Odium towards you for doing so. If someone does, we will all aid you in the Preservation of the List, and hope no one tries to Ruin it. But again, your Devotion deserves gratitude and recognition. The List of Reputation Ranks is safe in your Dominion. You deserve the Endowment of our thanks. (I thought of making a Cultivation joke before seeing your white text, so I decided to be a little more ambitious.)

Sorry, Threorymaker. That was a totally accidental mobile downvote. Someone please mend this. I'm really sorry.

So over in the You Know You're a Sanderfan When... thread, there was a pretty hilarious digression of Cosmere Hogwarts. I decided to make a full topic about it (mostly because I missed out on most of the original and wanted to contribute without derailing that thread any more ) So here goes... You see, the real problem when the cosmere invaded Hogwarts was that the Seekers all joined the Quidditch teams and replaced the snitches with Southern Scadrial Allomantic flying machines that they could keep track of with their Allomancy. But then the Lurchers kept on Pulling the snitches away from them, and the Coinshots would try to send them back to the Seekers. The Seers burned atium so knew what everyone was going to do and dominated. Thugs would grab people off of their broomsticks and throw them around. The final straw, however, was when the the double gold Twinborns would go crazy, harm themselves, then heal. Eventually, it was all stopped. No Allomancers were allowed to play Quidditch ever again. That was when the Feruchemists decided to get in on the action.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
GreyPilgrim replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
You know you're a Sanderfan when you often think of things to post on 17th Shard during you day-to-day life. In the shower, driving, while talking to other people... Alas, this thread has been quite derailed. I might just make a cosmere-Harry Potter matchup thread, though, because that was beautiful. And I have more to add. Edit: Topic made. -
I don't think Brandon confused anything with that quote, PorridgeBrick. I highly doubt that there is a Shard on Ashyn. If there were a Shard, it would most likely be caught up in the same conflict as Honor, Cultivation, and Odium, and thus far we have no reason there is another factor to it. I have speculated before that Ashyn is where the Tranquiline Halls were, and that the humans there were for some reason left there when the rest were driven to Roshar. I know the arguments for Braize being the Halls, but they have never convinced me.

The air was fresh this morning. A highstorm the day before had left its usual layer of crem everywhere, but Grellin cared not. He breathed deep. A day like this, he felt, was one full of possibility. He tried to stay optimistic; he believed it was the only way to go through life. His leg ached from a slash he had taken from a Parshendi a couple weeks back. It had bled quite a lot, but it was healing up quite well. Grellin had been removed from his duty as a captain under Highprince Aladar for a week, and yesterday had been his first chasm run since the injury. A day full of possibility indeed. Unfortunately, those possibilities took a negative turn nearly right away. "Brightlord Pilgras!" came a call behind him. Grellin stopped short. His soldiers knew he liked not to be disturbed during his walks. They were one of his few refuges in a confusing world. If a runner were sent after him, there must be something very wrong. Grellin turned and faced the man approaching him rapidly, violet fearspren surrounding the man's feet. "Brightlord Pilgras! King Naladar is dead!" Grellin was shocked, to say the least. He glanced downward. Around his own feet was growing a violet pool as well. Almighty above...

That's ok. We can keep it a secret. As long as Peter or Inkthinker doesn't see this and leak it to Brandon, it should be fine. (And now Peter is totally going to see this and tell Brandon.)

Mobile works totally fine on my phone, which runs Windows 8 and has Internet Explorer as the browser, except for one little thing that I've noticed recently: When I post from mobile, the screen does not go straight to my post if I use the Fast Reply, instead going near the top of the page. If I tap the Reply button or quote someone, it's fine. Not a big issue at all, but I thought I'd mention it.

Ditto on their introducing mediocre writers. In general, the post-Episode VI novels declined in quality the more they made of them, though that was in part due to the situations becoming overly contrived and boring characters. I also enjoy Kemp. Crosscurrent was quite good, though I never read Riptide. I noticed that they have chosen some of the better authors to start the new EU books; Miller, Luceno, and Kemp are already well-established Star Wars novelists. I stopped following the EU for the most part a couple years ago. It just got to be too much and the quality was generally decreasing. I will have to read the new novels they make, both because I can't live with not being in-the-know about official Star Wars expanded canon and because I am genuinely interested in where Disney chooses to take the characters.

Interesting idea. I don't know that it could really be true however. My impression is that these spren councils (the Ring, and whatever council it is the Cryptics have) are pretty powerful in and of themselves. The Ring does accept the Nightwatcher's authority, and Syl the Stormfather's. These are two extremely influential spren, directly related to Shards definitely in the Stormfather's place and most likely in the Nightwatcher's. I feel like if that kind of authority is used to determine Radiants, that the Shellspren probably would not have too much influence as a whole, since they are (reactively) commonplace, no matter how powerful. Still a cool idea, though. The Shellspren certainly have great influence in some areas. (Totally not related, but my phone autocorrected something to spren while writing this post, not the other way around! Victory!)

I have always loved the EU. I am really sad to see it go. My personal favorite has always been Karen Traviss. The Republic Commando novels are exceptional. She managed to put so much into those books. The clones were always a concept that I felt was a little underappreciated. They had to go through so much. Being raised from birth (?) to be soldiers, ageing at double the normal human pace. Think of how hard that could be on a mind! There was also often a tendency to lump them together. "They're all just copies of the same person, right? No need to give them individual characterization. Let's just blow them up." Traviss managed to escape those traps and create beautiful, individual, and complex characters. I have never been in combat, but her betrayal of it, the brotherhood created by it, the entire mindset, must be nearly perfect. Unfortunately, Traviss was never able to finish her stories, as her portrayal of Mandalore, its history, and its culture contradicted with that of the Clone Wars TV show. However, if you haven't read them, I highly suggest you do. Don't let the first book, Hard Contact, fool you. It is good, but not excellent, as the series was only a videogame tie-in at that point. The there other Republic Commando novels (Triple Zero, True Colors, and Order 66) as well as the single follow-up Imperial Commando novel (501st), are beautiful and heartbreaking. James Luceno is also one of my favorites, and of course Timothy Zahn. I never read Stover's RotS novelization, but based on what I've read about it, this is a major failure on my part. Mostly, I get annoyed when people consider spinoffs like the Star Wars novels to be "lesser literature". Yes, some Star Wars books are utter drivel. But many of them can stand up to supposed "true" literature. For anyone who's interested, I would suggest checking out Tor.com's ongoing Expanded Universe Reread. They focus on the classic ones (ones from the nineties), which I consider some of the best. They do a pretty good job of covering the books.

This only helps to further confirm my belief that Vi Hart is one of the most amazing humans on this planet. She even managed to incorporate symmetry (at least, so she claims; I'm not exactly the best at picking out those types of things). Nonetheless, absolutely beautiful. 1.35 gives me chills every time.

Someone really needs to ask Isaac what the glyph pair for Brandon is now. Like right this moment.

Very well then. I was quite surprised when I saw that that was the name of the organization, though. Indeed worth discussion.

That is even better than the original 1337 rank. So I wonder... Will there be any other silly reps that only exist at one exact number, like this one and Torturer of Heralds at 666?

"Rugrats of Honor"?

@Mailliw73 Ok, I took a closer look at the rules today in preparation for the game's beginning, and I have a few comments/questions. Approximately how many Ghostbloods will there be? About 1/5, like in the last game? Will the game start with at least one person having each item? It kind of has to, doesn't it? Will anyone start with totally normal roles? I was assuming it was only one action per night, but something you said seemed to indicate we had three. Please clarify. I'm a little concerned about the spanreed role. Whoever has it will automatically be identified, and the thief can steal it right away. But then it is kind of useless, because the thief cannot use it without identifying him or herself, and then if is used it disappears and is of no use to the game. I suggest whoever has the spanreed should tell the GM who they want to put in a PM and then the GM should start it, so that it is easier to stay hidden. However, the spanreed holder must still he in the PMs, to it is not impossible for him or her to be identified. More simply, will 3:00 MST be the rollover time for the whole game? Sorry if the spanreed question is a little confusing. I might be over thinking that role a bit.
-
Very good points, Metacognition. I see now my error in thinking. I guess my problem was that, being new to the game and having a normal role, I didn't really have a sense of the strategy and didn't get too into the game. Had I been a Special Role, I would probably have made a better effort. I got a sense of that in the Quick Fix game, in which I was one of the Eliminators.

Buy. Every Stormlight book will end with an epilogue in Wit/Hoid's point of view.

Mine's not terribly original. Actually, not at all. For those who don't recognize it, my profile picture is a nice portrait of the Witch-King of Angmar. Because it kind of goes with my username, being a Middle Earth character, and the Witch-King is ominous and cool-looking at the same time.
