  1. Lightly fried with a side salad....sorry what was the question? More seriously, I vastly prefer to read physical copies. Audiobooks are too slow and I just prefer having something solid in my hands over ebooks. Ebooks just don't feel the same. I'm undecided on hardcover vs paperback though. The hardcovers are nicer but they can be a tad bulky. Paperbacks are easier to carry around.
  2. Welcome to the forum Leonardus! Glad you decided to step from the shadows and join us
  3. Welcome to the forums Aether! For a better description of Rep than I could give go here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3857-reputation-points/ I tend to think of upvoting as handing out warm fuzzies To modify your signature go to your profile (you can get there by clicking on your account name up the top right of the screen and selecting "my profile" if you didn't know). Then choose the "Edit my profile" button in the upper right of that page. Then select the "signature" tab on the left-side of the edit page. Type in the box and hit save changes. Hope that helps
  4. Correct me if I am wrong here. But I believe Darnam and I were agreeing here. We were both saying that we think the Nalthians might have marginally more "life-force" (really need a better word). Regarding that quote. It strongly implies similar levels, which no-one is disagreeing with. I don't think it says anything regarding minor differences. I've read your arguments there and you ascertain that it is entirely plausible that there is an exact equality, however there is little to prove whether that is the case or the (in my opinion) equally plausible marginal differences is the case. So given that we all accept that either way is plausible we really are arguing a very minor point here. Short of directly asking Brandon I don't think we will get confirmation either way on this. (Oh and apologies for derailing your thread )
  5. @Kurk, I really don't see that quote as leaning either way on this. @Darnam, There is a definite variance in the strength of Nalthian's breaths, Warbreaker chapter 6 I think this supports the idea of people in general having different strength life-forces, which I personally think is correct. I don't see it as being likely that every person in the cosmere has the exact same degree of "life-force".
  6. I had thought that a Nalthian with a breath was marginally more alive/(insert better word) than humans on other worlds. So that their basic investiture was slightly stronger, but easier to remove. I could naturally be completely wrong on that. I don't think we have any WoB either way.
  7. Ok, so I was the confuzzled one. I would say that a scadrian would not be able to sense a drab by my theory. i would also note though that a normal Scadrian would also be unable to sense someone with 1 breath to any meaningful degree. I would guess that an awakener could sense any Scadrian, allomancer or otherwise though a non-allomancer/someone who wasn't burning anything would probably be harder to sense/feel fainter than a normal Nalthian. By my theory the "life-sense" of the awakeners is basically a stronger and more directed version of the innate "investiture sense" that other humans have.</blatant conjecture>
  8. @Kurkistan, I'm not trying to take my theory as fact or anything. My problem with the name "life-sense" is a separate, though related, thing. If it was a true "life-sense" it should be diminished on drabs, but it should still detect them as they are still living creatures. But it doesn't. So, I would prefer to call it an "investiture sense" or a "breath sense" if you prefer. As this is the true difference. This "investiture sense" would functionally be very similar to the one in my theory, but doesn't require it to exist. Sorry for the confusion.
  9. That or someone just killed a large number of people almost instantly, in which case you should run Given that a drab is completely undetectable through life-sense so this would feel the same.
  10. Yes! Yes that would be very good to know. I would also like to know if, assuming my theory of innate investiture-sense was correct, it was possible for hemalurgy to steal investiture-sense. If so you could potentially spike a LOT of people to make someone who was essentially a seeker who didn't need to burn bronze and didn't give off allomantic pulses. (Having more inestiture than an ordinary person they would be easier to sense than normal, but not nearly as easy as allomancy.) On a bit of a tangent, it really shouldn't be "life-sense", so much as an "investiture-sense", oh well.
  11. A test I would really like to do now. If you put an awakener in a coppercloud can they still sense people through their biochromatic auras? That could really help with this.
  12. Reaction to the initial post. A one line theory post? Who are you? Because you can't be Kurkistan More seriously: -I agree that smokers block all types of investiture however your logic is a tad unsound here. It is strongly implied by those facts, not proved. There is a difference between the seeker being smoked and the, say, surgebinder that they are seeking being smoked. Beyond that I like this theory. A couple of things it makes me wonder: -Does it in any way use the investiture it draws in. AKA could a smoker who was covering several actively burning allomancers continue burning for marginally longer than if they weren't covering any? (Assuming they had the same amount of metal to start with.) A better example would be with someone trying to sooth them. -This theory creates an interesting idea regarding bronze. Bronze is a pushing metal, sure, so it allows you to sense what you would not have been able to otherwise. But wait, when you think about it, how is that really pushing anything? So I propose that all humans have some innate ability to sense investiture and bronze pushes that to a point of being actually useful and noticeable.
  13. By far the best steel alphabet tables I have seen. Good work! To my knowledge the feruchemical symbols are a form of the steel alphabet that was used by the terris people in the time of the book series (or maybe just the keepers). They also developed from the Hero of Ages symbols. (Fairly certain on this though I can't find the confirmation )
  14. I think that still works ok. The impression I got was that Kelsier was unable to properly hold or use the power so his taking of it may have been a stop-gap measure. It wouldn't surprise if me if holding the power was actually very difficult for him and not a long-term option. Or simply that he was unable to properly utilize it and hence the power was getting progressively more desperate for someone who could.
  15. I don't think there are any travelling skaa merchants and the canal's are run by noble houses. To my memory about the highest a skaa could get was to be a master craftsman, they wouldn't be traveling for that either. It could definitely work with a noble patron, though I expect there might need to be a minor noble traveling with them partly just to deal with other noble houses. (I figured that was why you were wondering )
  16. @Kad There might well be. I think they would most likely have to be run by a noble or likely a very minor noble family though as skaa aren't allowed to travel except under instructions to do so.
  17. Welcome to the forums mdmilosz! That is a very nice chart <have your first upvote =) >. (Although atium being in temporal is misleading. You could adjust it to have a single Temporal line and have a Shard line.). The location of the dots has been noted before though, despite I don't know how much time searching, to my knowledge none of us have ever found a meaning to the number and placement of the spikes/curves. There has been some occasional speculation on what the last 4 symbols are. Brandon has stated that we know all of the base metals however there could possibly be alloys of the base metals that we are unaware of. That is very uncertain though. It is also possible that they represent alloys of Atium or Lerasium though personally I do not think this is the case because: -They appear to be 2 pairs, with the dot locations indicating a pull/push pair. -They bear almost no resemblance to atium or lerasium. Most of the alloys bear some resemblance to the symbol of the base metal. So basically we are all fairly clueless. I would be interested to hear any theories you come up with Edit: I went and looked at the chart of symbols from Hero of ages. As the symbols from mistborn 1 era were derived from these I was hoping that the older symbols, being closer to the origins of the language, might hold more clues, and I actually found something interesting! It may be nothing, but in this older script each of the unknown symbols correlates very closely to one of the other metals. (I'm going to call the parts that jut out spikes for now, as they are what became the spikes in the more modern texts.) 19 Add an extra "spike" to 19 and you have Zinc. 20 Add an extra "spike" to 20 and remove a small one and you get Aluminium. 21 This is the most uncertain. You can get Zinc with 1 remove and 1 add or Duralumin if you add 3. 22 Add an extra "spike"/curve/thing to get Gold. It could be nothing, but there is more similarity than I expected. Here's the chart for reference.
  18. Here you go =) Hero of Ages chapter 81, (page 698 in my paperback) Anyway, interesting theory. If there wasn't something related to the question he would have just said no. So I agree that there is definitely something of interest here.
  19. Haemalurgic spikes are slightly more different than that as they do contain a piece of the victims sdna.(Whether they steal a part of the victims cognitive aspect or not is still very open to debate ) They definitely aren't equivalent to spren but they could *maybe* serve a similar purpose in this theoretical system.
  20. Wait. I had forgotten about Alendi having spikes. Wasn't there something about no-one with haemalurgic spikes being able to use the power at the well? Was Ruin unaware of that or did the prophecies account for that and mention the hero removing their piercings before using/releasing the power?
  21. I don't believe that was an intentional risk. His purges of the Terris people afterwoulds indicate that he just didn't think of the feruchemic sdna still present in the non-feruchemist Terris when he turned all the existing feruchemists into mistwraiths. He didn't really want to destroy his own people and he didn't think he needed to. I highly doubt Preservation's intent had any impact on this decision as it takes a long time bearing a full shard for it to have a major effect on the person's psyche to fit the shard's intent. Ok, take it with a grain of salt as it is at least partially MAG based info. However I expect that at least the basic part is correct, "Copper spikes store intelligence and memory." It goes on to talk about the detrimental effects of having chunks of someone else's memories etc in your head. I take that as part of the cognitive aspect of the person and if that is the case, I would theorize that any spike would take on some small part of the cognitive aspect. (Clearly this is just theorizing and unconfirmed =) ) Edit: I'm just going to put a general apology here for all times where I go talking about stuff that is MAG confirmed only or is a theory as if it was confirmed. Because of how much time I have invested into the large MAG campaign I am running and the assumptions and decisions I have had to make for that I do sometimes get whether something is a theory that I've adopted for it or actually confirmed, mixed up.
  22. Oooh yes =D My take on the haemalurgic spike thing, is that the actual usage of them as a fabrial would be powered by the mists as in Chaos's theory. But you needed an imbued spike rather than just a random piece of metal.
  23. <kadrok just ninja'd me =( > Oh well. They would have genetic allomancy but it would be much rarer than in the final empire. Anyway, the haemalurgy thing is more an expansion of Chaos's theory than a new theory altogether (ooor I'm on a different track to Kadrok :/ ). @Skaa, interesting theory, but I can't say that I really think it's correct. Though Aluminium definitely has a lot of interesting things about it that we don't know yet, which would be why he keeps RAFOing aluminium questions. (I don't actually think Chaos's theory is quite correct either )
  24. Yup, that's correct (Australian). I agree that losing your breath on Nalthis is not as severe as being spiked. However, I think it is very similar just on a lesser scale, and it is still quite serious. Warbreaker annotations chapter 15 part 2 http://brandonsanderson.com/annotation-warbreaker-chapter-fifteen-part-2/ Warbreaker annotations chapter 22 part 2 http://brandonsanderson.com/annotation-warbreaker-chapter-twenty-two-part-2/ I think the parallel is justified. Anyway, you kind of can get back what was stolen by hemalurgy, just by getting a spike yourself. Not an ideal solution and if it wasn't the spike that was made using you you are still going to be a bit different. Though yes, that is notably harder than just replacing a breath. As a side note, I'm not convinced that losing your breath then gaining someone else's breath will leave you exactly as you were before. (Ignoring the impact of time spent as a drab.) We know that breaths can be different strengths and I think it's possible that breaths differ in more ways as well.
  25. @Argent, good point. Nah, a society where they regularly took parts of peoples souls couldn't possibly last very long, oh, wait, Hallendren anyone? It is a bit different, but mainly just because of the process of taking that part being a tad messier with haemalurgy. Edit: dang it. Some day I will remember that hemalurgy doesn't have an extra 'a' in it despite it's connection to blood :/
