  1. Early on yeah, there was months between meetings. But after her recovery she would have been attending social functions essentially everyday, sometimes multiple per day and while Elend wouldn't have been at many of the smaller social functions that she went to there were still multiple balls per week. After the point where they actually got together they would have been seeing eachother multiple times a week for at least a couple of months. It is fast, but it isn't love at first sight/immediately cannot live without you. It's more like a crush that develops rapidly into something more. I think part of why the characters worked so well for me is how well they fit with parts of my own personalities/difficulties. Not all aspects obviously, but enough. Elend being an avid reader and reading at parties, you have no idea how often I want to spend parties reading. Just in general the idealism and carrying books everywhere fit me well. Vin's extreme difficulty in talking to others etc was very similar to my own struggles. (Not for the same reasons, I didn't grow up on the streets or anything and didn't expect everyone to betray me, I just found socializing of any sort really hard, still do to a lesser degree.) So how she slowly worked past that worked well for me. The scene early on when she stands in the hallway at night listening to the crew have a good-natured time together enjoying eachothers company in the kitchen and high the light, warmth and laughter felt like a barrier. That scene, as well as the later when where she is with them, resonated very deeply with me. I do get why this wouldn't have seemed anywhere near as good to some people. But for me, struggling with the same issues, it was perfect. On a different note as to why I like it, Kelsier was such an awesome character The blend of kindness he showed for Vin and care for the skaa, combined with his courage to do whatever it took, his eternally outwardly positive attitude and then combined with his absolute callousness and large ego made him a very interesting character.

    Atium Alloys

So, they were then all mistings for a specific metal that hadn't been discovered? Or for aluminium or something? I do not think there was enough of preservation left to predict the series of events well enough to manipulate events to get them to the caverns. We don't have any conclusive proof either way. But I do not think it is likely that Brandon wrote it that way.

    Atium Alloys

That's not the first time that thought has come up. It still doesn't make sense to me with Demoux and the other "mistfallen" though. They were stricken by the mists for an extended period of time and they could burn atium afterwards, but not anything else.
  4. Nice. I agree this theory is quite well busted. The only remaining slight possibility is that it is composed in part of a name for something we haven't read yet. (Run the program again on words of radiance once it comes out? )
  5. I don't have it yet. But I have had an eye on it for a while, now that its available I will almost certainly have it by the end of the month. Would be happy to play with you once I have it
  6. I didn't feel the awkwardness *shrug* maybe due to how closely I related with both characters. I've never been good at accepting love at first sight either, but to be fair they had been together for months before the crowd scene you are referring too. That's much more reasonable. (I'm not trying to attack your views or anything, I'm ok with you not liking it as much as others ) On topic, I think my least favourite would be between Elantris and Alcatraz. Elantris was still good and I definitely enjoyed it but (unsurprisingly) it wasn't as well written as some of the others and I just didn't enjoy it as much as others. Alcatraz, it was good but maybe too silly for my tastes. *shrug*
  7. Cool. I had forgotten about that quote. It does make more sense for others to have gotten the visions as well.
  8. Ok, let's do this 1. Mistborn The Final Empire, It was my first Brandon book and to this day has seen more rereads from me than any other book I can think of. I love the characters, Kelsier, Vin and to a lesser degree Elend and the others just really resonate with me. I love the world and the imagery, and there simply has never been as cool a magic system as allomancy IMO. 2. The Way Of Kings, Fairly inevitable that this would be up here. The reasoning has been pretty well covered by now; good characters, huge, ambitious and original world, excellent writing etc etc. However it still doesn't top the final empire for me. Sure it's bigger and got more in it, but the final empire was the perfect length for the story it had to tell. 3. The Emperor's Soul, Beautifully written, awesome, intriguing and highly original magic system, interesting philosopy discussions and interesting characters, short (obviously) but it doesn't feel at all rushed. It deserved the recognition it got. Not unusual choices but a slightly different order to most
  9. Welcome to the forums Bramble Thorn! You make a good point with the genetic inheritance of the lighteyes from the shardblades. Yes Odium has actually invested his power into Roshar, I don;t know if it is confirmed but it is at least a common theory that destroying everything would make it easier for him to extract himself again. A note though, Odium hasn't really won yet, sure he killed Honor but I'm pretty certain he won't feel he has won at least til Cultivation was splintered as well. As for others having received the visions in the past. Entirely possible, maybe even likely though I don't think we have solid evidence either way.
  10. So after reading this I thought I had a clever idea. I figured there was a good chance that the theorized anagram for Figgldygrak would contain a word from the english language. It might not, but seemed a fair chance. Looking at it further I figure the most restrictive part of the word is the 3 g's. Thought to myself, "That's a lot of g's, this hypothetical word from the english language might well have a 'gg' in it." It doesn't. Feeling quite pleased with my idea I found a list of all words in the english langauge with 'gg' in them. (There are 1061 for anyone who is curious.) Then I wrote a program that would read a list of words from a file and then check if each word could be spelt using the letters from figgldygrak. If it found one it would print out the word followed by all the letters in figgldygrak that it didn't use. I then gave that program all letters in the alphabet with 'gg' in them. Here's what came out: faggy ildgrk raggy fildgk draggy filgk flaggy idgrk giggly fdrak While it would be hilarious if hoid was actually referring to a "giggly drafk" or similar, I highly doubt this is the case. So in case anyone else was crazy enough to think of and consider trying this, don't bother Note: I'm not absolutely certain that my code doesn't have any errors that could be causing it to miss words. But I am 90% sure that it is error free. Edit: For the record, I don't think it's all that likely that it was intentional and the figgldygrak is anything but a nonsense word Brandon came up with. Still fun to see what we can make of it though. Edit 2: Special and proud of it
  11. Yup, that's the 11th metal. House of Ashes was written by someone else and is of very dubious canonicity. Not everything in it is wrong, but I would not use it as a reference for anything. @Ookla the Confuzified Esq That is exactly what I have been saying
  12. I think they could burn it up to the point where you could actually call it a tin alloy rather than just pure tin. At that (rather fuzzy) line it stops being tin and starts being a different metal allomantically speaking. At that point they could not burn it, if they could, then a tineye could burn pewter. I would guess the line might have something to do with cognitive identity (or forms).
  13. Oh right, got it now. Understood the main part before, I was just a tad slow getting the follow up question properly. I would be reasonably sure that you could not get any new powers out of bad metals/alloys. Recall if you will that Vin tried to burn a number of alloys of aluminium before finding duralumin and all it did was make her very sick. It is vaguely possible that it gave her powers she didn't notice just like it took her a bit to figure out duralumins effect. I don't think this is the case though.
  14. It sounds to me like you may want to read it with someone else, someone who can provide emotional support/stability
  15. It would depend on how impure the metal/alloy was. If it was only a little impure it might make them feel sick and would give less power, just like for a mistborn. If it too impure though it would be considered a different metal/alloy and they would not be able to burn it. In answer to your follow up question I don't think so. But I am uncertain I am properly understanding your question.
  16. Pretty certain it is number 2. If a thug swallows tin they won't feel any reserve for it. It's not a "mistings can't get power from any other metal", mistings cannot burn any other metal. (Though an argument can be made for atium and its alloys, that's really a different question.)
  17. Anyone else get the feeling that Shardlet is really enjoying making downvote worthy posts?
  18. So I'm guessing it's currently 10? Given that is how many of his posts I have downvoted. Is it a per period of time thing or something? I didn't even know it existed till now. I am in agreement with Kurk here, in any normal situation if someone is using 10 downvotes across a short space of time something very fishy is going on.
  19. I think you would find that any brand new metal wouldn't have any allomantic properties. There are actually quite a lot of naturally occurring metals that don't, the allomantic metals are really only a small subset. If they successfully "created" a sample of an existing allomantic metal I would guess that an allomancer could burn it without any difficulty. I'm a little uncertain on whether forging would work though. Trying to convince a piece of lead that it was actually steel might be a bit of a stretch, convincing some iron that it had been forged into steel at some point could be much easier. I don't know what would happen if an allomancer tried to burn this hypothetical forged steel though. Maybe it would give them Allomantic steel until enough of the metal burnt away that it broke the seal, and then revert to Allomantic iron. That's pure speculation though.
  20. I highly doubt there is any lower ranks than that. Was definitely fun though =) And cool to know that it's Zucchini. That is definitely by far the most downvotes I have ever given. Actually wait, that might be the first time I've downvoted, huh.
  21. Ah k So you know I was referring to a character from "the gamers" movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTEHqAeanw#t=4m57s Also, just so you are aware, you will see quite a few Ookla's around at the moment http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4684-happy-ookla-the-mokovial-with-more-2013-in-it/ Most usernames will probably be back to normal soon.
  22. I cannot claim to be surprised. Glad there were a couple you hadn't Edit: Realized I never actually said my steam handle lord_Ffnord, just like my older name here.
  23. Missing a letter and two of the characters are slightly wrong, similar to the actual character, but not quite. One is a different character used for the same purpose and the other is the wrong case. Edit: Ninja'd by the correct answer. Good job
  24. Welcome to the forums The Shadow! Do I spy a "The Gamers" reference?
  25. Almost 2 slight problems with that. Actually 3 if we are trying to get it absolutely correct
