  1. Wow, I didn't realise how detailed your lists were... cool! Upvote! On a related note, I was just looking through the massive theory list and I noted that the you've attributed A-Malatium/F-Aluminium identity vampirism only to Skaa, when I technically submitted the idea in another topic 14 days earlier than him (I note in Skaa's post that we probably arrived at the idea independently). I know it seems petty, but any chance I could get my name on that theory too? EDIT: Huh, I mention in that post that that great minds think alike business had happened before... I wonder what that was about? EDIT 2: Also I reside in Queensland, Australia if you felt like adding me to your Sharder geotracker.
  2. So I posted my version of this theory, thinking incorrectly that it was original; I hadn't been here for a while, and obviously didn't search well enough (which is embarrassing since this topic is in fact on the first page). But in mine I suggest shardpools present a rift between the physical realm and the cognitive which can be used for worldhopping, but not all rifts are necessarily shardpools. The horneater pool might not be a shardpool, but it might be a "rift", and this would be consistent with the weird congnitive mumbo jumbo going on with the horneaters. Additionally my solution to Hoid not finding the Well of Ascension for ages is that he didn't know where it was in the cognitive realm (but he presumably did know about the access point at the pits of Hathsin or some other access we don't know about). I further point out that this (and a WoB) might imply that someone without "magic" could worldhop, provided they know how the pools work... which is an appealing notion. Here's the full text (in a spoiler box so this post isn't huge) so we don't have people posting in a redundant topic: With regard to the OP, there certainly does seem to be a likely connection between the Elantrian kill-pool and the difficulties in traveling on Sel, and I am put in mind of the WoB in which he talks about something having to be behind the power of the shattered shards... what if Odium set something to control the scrap of power tied to the well, setting it to offer death in place of cognitive realm access? Traveling to Sel would require getting past that warden.
  3. Lol... next post I read I find this: *sigh* nevermind *goes back to where he's been hiding all this time* EDIT: Threw in some ideas on the other topic.
  4. Preface: So I had this thought a while back, but I've been lazy about coming here recently. If someone else has thought of this and posted about it... please forgive me... I gave a cursory glance of what's been happening, but as I mentioned, I've been lax in my presence here as of late, and am probably not up to date. Let's just get right into it shall we... I'm proposing that Hoid worldhops through pools of some kind, possibly shardpools. Let's have some quotes! So note first that how Hoid worldhops is not the be all and end all of worldhopping... there are other ways. Concerning my argument, these quotes are most important... (This is going to be really embarrassing if you guys have figured out what this is in my absence and I am wrong). People I've seen have jumped on the teleportation aspects of Elantris, but there is another more interesting feature of Elantris which seems to connect to Words of Radiance. In Elantris we see Elantrians placed in the magic dissolving pool, and disappear. The element of Words of Radiance I am talking about is of course the story Rock tells about how he met Hoid (he doesn't know it's Hoid, he thinks of it as a trickster god, but it seemed obvious to me it was Hoid, and if anyone takes issue with this I suppose I can revisit the passage and make the case). Hoid was emerging from a sacred pool only the Horneaters are allowed around; people with a connection/awareness of spren, and therefore with some sort of cognitive mumbo jumbo. So Hoid comes out of the sacred pool in Horneaterville... where was he coming from? We've thus seen people disappear into pools, and a known worldhopper emerge from one. Even more suggestive, you'll note that one of the only known instances of Hoid's worldhopping in which we know exactly where he went was when he used worldhopping to access the Well of Ascension chamber and steal a bead of lerasium... he worldhopped directly to somewhere with a shardpool... perhaps through the shardpool in some way. My theory, mechanically speaking, is that these sacred pools (which don't all have to be shardpools) somehow form a rift between the cognitive realm and the physical realm, allowing travel between them. In terms of Scadrial, and Hoid's long search for the Well of Ascension, it is possible Hoid only knew where the pool at the pits of Hathsin was, and needed a better idea of where Preservation's pool was before he could "exit" there, hence all his time wandering around Terris. Finally, let's consider perhaps the most important quote: You could take Brandon's "but it isn't needed" in two ways, but in the context of his second sentence, it seems to me to imply that no magic system is needed, or at least that any magic system could be used (although ones with Cognitive Realm powers serve better, unsurprisingly). If this is the case, one would simply need to know where these pools (or perhaps more accurately rifts) are, and how to access them. That said, Jasnah notes that it is dangerous to travel Shadesmar without Stormlight, and I can see at least one magic system being required in order to generate the investiture necessary to survive... Thoughts?
  5. Here's an idea that has been kicking around in my head for a while. I was going to put it with some other powers, but it actually seems like an interesting solitary power with rich story potential... 1. What would your power/secondary power be? I need a better way to articulate this, but basically "Death-triggered Soul transference". My Epic's only power is a rather uncomfortable kind of immortality... basically, as soon as he dies he takes over the body of the nearest non-Epic (and has seemingly unlimited range). Their brain is restructured to match my Epic, who continues to live in their body. He doesn't gain any of their memories beyond the basic kinesthetic understanding of how to move their body and he doesn't have to contend with their persisting will; as soon as they are possessed, they have essentially died. As a side effect of his ability, he is immune to neurological conditions and brain-damage... his or her brain will always gradually reformat back to what it is supposed to be... additionally, he doesn't suffer any neurological disadvantages of old age. There are downsides and upsides to this... in terms of upsides, other than via his weakness, she (I'm going to switch gender pronouns throughout this Corsair style) cannot be killed. Additionally, he has the opportunity to live forever, swapping bodies out as they start to get old, and accumulating knowledge and experience. There are also the spying applications, of course. He's also gained a unique perspective on the human condition through living as both man and woman, old and young, weak and strong, pretty and ugly at various times in her life. Finally, there is always the chance she will trade up to a superior body. The downsides... with no other powers, he is essentially as helpless as any other human in a world of terrifying Epics... it simply doesn't make sense to live as an Epic because she is fair game for retribution from the oppressed underclasses, or enslavement by stronger Epics (being immune to death does not make you immune to torture or pain). He also can't rely long term on the resources of the body, since whenever she dies he'll have completely different (and often hard to predict) physical faculties... she's also had to deal with uncomfortable attention from former friends, family or lovers of his hosts, for having no memories of a body's past life makes impersonation difficult. Additionally, she could easily be defeated by being trapped in a body who has been weakened to the point of helplessness, but not death... he harbors a fear that some clever epic will blinded, deafen, paralyze and maim one of their minions simply to force her into a body which will be kept on life support, completely disconnected from the world, and trapped with his thoughts for eternity (she's taken to memorizing several riddles in case he will need to entertain himself in her mind forever). Finally, it's hard to be close to anyone when your death will probably kill them (it doesn't make sense to keep your friends close). 2. What is your weakness? I tossed up a lot of options for this, but in the end I have to go with "old age". If his host dies of old age, she dies too. 3. What is your cheesy name? My epic goes by whatever his body was called, if she can work it out, or else he uses a fake name. But she calls himself Imprint 4. In what way does your inevitable evil manifest itself (why do ordinary people really hate you?) Given the nature of her powers (passive, rarely triggered), he's quite resilient to the evil, and mainly just wants to survive. She lacks some of the compunctions about killing other people through taking their bodies, perhaps through the "everydayness" off it all, or perhaps through the evilness. A description of your costume would be fun as well. Given the nature of his powers, he generally wears whatever clothes are available to her. EDIT: I did mention that he cannot take the bodies of Epics; I should probably also note that if the body she takes had powers gifted to it, he doesn't gain those powers... like any Epic, she doesn't receive gifting well...
  6. What if Braize was once Yolen? This fits with the theory that Braize is the respawn point for the Heralds, with Odium as a spawn camper. EDIT: Also fits with Adonalsium visiting Roshar in the past if the Rosharan system was once the Yoleni system.
  7. This is going to sound a bit out of the box... but what if the weapon is humanity? We certainly know humans can be created by shards, such as the Scadrians, but are we absolutely sure the first humans were created by Adonalsium? If this is the case, I think it is safe to say that the weapon is still around.
  8. "Shadow" was actually a bit of an in-joke. I'm playing a different Jastes Hasting in another campaign, and "Shadow" was one of the gold-shadows the main Jastes would see...
  9. I don't think so, but if there is such a thing I'd be very interested to see it. I'm pretty sure that's just a theory (a good one, and one I subscribe to, but as yet unconfirmed).
  10. Well my theory was that Parshemen without a form have an indefinite lifespan. Other thoughts on this can be found here. (Fair enough that you didn't see it, it has moved down to page 5 of the WoR discussion).
  11. So looking forward to Wrought of Copper. So much awesome!

  12. By pure and awesome coincidence my title here is Worldbringer. It is confirmed... I am the last Worldbringer
  13. Sorry. Crafty Games told us ages ago that the Terris supplement would be before the Alloy one but I guess I assumed everyone would find out through the 17th Shard hivemind (I'll see if I can find a link to where they say this). If there is another update like that, where would you like me to post it? EDIT: Okay, I could be wrong... but I am, like, 80% sure they responded to this http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?topic=7207.msg134510#msg134510 confirming that Terris would be first. Perhaps they deleted the response because they don't like to give out information they aren't sure of?
  14. It is a bit more complicated since it is competitive, and it will certainly be possible for you to die. But you'd certainly be welcome on my crew!
  15. Dude, you should change your title to Worldsinger to match my Worldbringer. BFFs!
  16. You get an upvote just for the thread title. I too have considered that an entirely new language would be required to get Aon Dor to work... but the plates involved in the Soul Forging we see in Emperor's soul gave me a couple of ideas: Could an Elantrian make a plate (or something similar using Aon Dor, like an amulet) that would essentially act as a translator, interpreting the Aon's the Elantrian is tracing (provided they contained the proper mark to trigger the plate-reading) and translating them for the proper region? Making the amulet would still require figuring out what all the symbols are for that region, but they wouldn't have to practice tracing an entirely new language for each world... they'd just need to remember to include the symbols telling their Aon's to refer to the amulet particular to that region. Basically, you'd learn the Aon's for Alethkar, or whatever, and then make a "phrase book" amulet. Alternatively, could an amulet be made than acts as a relay, conveying the power directly from the Elantris region, without the need to research a new alphabet for every world/region?
  17. Of course. Don't misunderstand me, I don't think it will be a Surgebinder-less battle. I'm suggesting that they might have to adapt their strategy in terms of power management in the event they lose the ability to recharge the way they're used to. It could be that they discover another way to charge their gems... it could be that Lift discovers she can poop Stormlight and saves the day.
  18. Fascinating theory. I like it. A couple of things though: My understanding is that everything charges once in a Highstorm (the moment Kaladin sees the "Stormfather"). This makes the Everstorm all the more devastating because the power source on which everything relies is denied them... not just the energy for surgebinders, but Soulcasting, powering Shardplate, lighting, fabrials... it's like one big power outage that would cripple the human side. The flip side of this is that the Parshendi can only change forms during a Highstorm. Does this mean: a) The Parshendi are similarly crippled, in that they are trapped in one form. or, the far more epic one... b ) The Parshendi can form-shift at will, constantly adapting to whatever the humans throw at them. If it is b, an Everstorm would shift the balance of power severely in the Parshendi favour. A crippled human force versus a constantly shifting and adapting force.
  19. I'm required to begin this post with the phrase: "If the MAG is anything to go by..." to indicate that this is based on how Nicrosil works in the MAG. I've outlined this a bajillion times (not a jab at you), so I'ma just quote myself here... EDIT: I explain this better somewhere else, so I'm going to keep searching my posts... EDIT 2: Don't mind me, I'm just going to use this post as storage for my posts on Feruchemical nicrosil, so I don't have to go looking for them again... I should note with regard to this one that this process bears similarities to how the investiture flow works in Allomancy and Aon Dor. In Aon Dor shape of the symbols instructs the system the form which the power is to take. Likewise, in Allomancy it is the metal's molecular structure tells the "power of creation" what form the power is to take. You burn Gold, you're telling the system to give you the power to connect with other possible selves. Compounding works the same way, except that the Feruchemical charge in the metal subverts the molecular structure, telling the "power of creation" to give you healing (in the case of Gold). This is why Brandon describes compounding as using Allomancy to fuel Feruchemy. Using Nicrosil Feruchemy seems to work in a similar way, the power needs to be told what to do, but I would suggest that this is because Nicrosil Investiture has the opposite problem to Investiture from the "power of creation". Nicrosil Investiture needs to be told what to do because in itself it is blank; the process by which it is made involves taking some trait and stripping it of its shape, leaving it shapeless. Investiture from the "power of creation" needs to be shaped (or more accurately directed) because it is shapefull... it could literally do nearly anything, which is fine for something with infinite capabilities, but too much to handle for mortal entities as Brandon notes. As a side note, if it is difficult to understand why the power needs to be limited as far as it is used by mortals, I have an analogy for you (skip this if you understand). Suppose one was to design an X-Box game with game play based solely around the superpower telekinesis... one couldn't possibly squeezing into the limited X-Box controller every possible use or application for telekinesis, there wouldn't be enough buttons (this could be mitigated with buttons that allow you to change the function of other buttons, but this introduces complications, and can only be done so much before the interface becomes an incomprehensible mess). Now compare this to making the same game on a PC. Again there are limits, but far less than for the X-Box. Finally, compare the two to actually having telekinesis, and the "interface" of controlling it directly with your mind (alternatively substitute a game controller using a very advanced neural interface). In this analogy, I would suggest that wielding the "power of creation" for a mortal is like playing the game on the X-Box. They can do a variety of interesting things, but there are gaps in the power (eg I can move objects with my mind but only if they are made of metal, and only towards or away from me). For someone with every single system it is like playing the game on PC. So much more complexity of power, but still a couple of limits (eg With the three lashings, Allomantic steel, Allomantic iron and Feruchemical iron I can move things around in a variety of ways... I very nearly have telekinesis!) The neural interface is of course the experience of shardholders, (they can move the planet around freely)* *On the basis that Rashek was unable to use the well's power to kill, you could argue that Shards more properly belong in the PC category, but with a very advanced PC. I would suggest that this limit was part of the well's experience, and taking the shard as Vin did presents no limit on the power (as she used it to kill Ati). This is checked, however by the power's influence taking hold over time, so the "neural interface" is perhaps most accurately a "fresh" Shard, someone with all the power and very little Intent. EDIT 3: This last one is long, takes multiple posts, and is less refined than my later one, so I'm just putting the link here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3441-on-the-feruchemy-of-nicrosil/?p=55469 EDIT 4: I think that's it, so I'm going to stop looking. Sorry for taking this thread off track a little.
  20. THIS. In other news... I'm more excited about playing Deus Ex (the first one) again rather than anything coming out in this year. Man that game rocks (A bit off topic, but whatever). Also, TU14 for Minecraft on X-Box because it looks like we're finally getting trading*! I've been waiting for trading since before TU7 back in December 2012 when I mistakenly assumed that because it was adding villagers it would be adding trading. *Because it looks like they're adding Emeralds, and why would that add trading currency without trading except to dash my hopes and dreams yet again. I'm going to be selfish and self-centred here and say that I can think of several features they've added over the intervening Title Updates that I would have gladly sacrificed to have trading sooner. EDIT: Also, THIS:
  21. Store your alternate self's knowledge in a coppermind perhaps?
