  1. So it looks like, after all is said and done, I've settled on Feruchemy as my favourite Scadrian system. That said, if my only choices were Misting or Ferring, I would pick Misting. With Feruchemy, it's all or nothing.

  2. Forgive me for necroing my own thread; I was just about to start a thread called "Can we discuss Scadrian Worldhopping?" when I realised that kicking the life back into this one was preferable. Now, I was utterly convinced burning Atium was the key to worldhopping. I was wrong, and that's tragic, but let's not let it kill the discussion. I very much want to know what the worldhopping key is on Scadrial, and we're some of the finest minds on the interwebs... surely we can figure it out! So, if it isn't burning Atium, what could it be? Despite being proven wrong, a whole lot of my points still seem right to me. I am disinclined to think that some random Atium-alloy is the answer (though that would be the easy answer). Perhaps there is something in the 16 base metals that has been overlooked? Like... Allomantic Gold? I mean, it doesn't work how we're told it works for a start (it doesn't show the past, it shows the present had the past been different), and it there is something weirdly cognitive going on there: you inhabit both your mind and the mind of your shadow... and if you possess the knowledge of your double, you're essentially pulling information out of nowhere... that screams to me cognitive realm. It certainly doesn't work the same way that Electrum does, given that with Electrum you see your shadow, not see through your shadow. Relative to the shadow of your possible present, the shadow of your possible future seems kind of... empty. Allomantic Gold is also appealing because no one really bothers to study it. The unpleasantness of the experience, combined with the lack of immediate usefulness makes it believable that, if it was the key to worldhopping, it hasn't become public knowledge. Even Miles mentions that he rarely thinks about the Augur side of him, despite apparently making a regular habit of burning Gold to "alloy" himself. Note that this leaves open someone figuring it out, and not telling anyone, or dying off world... What if it is as simple as walking into your shadow? You know, the way Vin did, when she freaked out and stopped burning Gold. What if she had kept burning Gold, and rode the metaphorical lightning? It would be classic Brandon if Vin very nearly entered Shadesmar all the way back in the first Mistborn trilogy. This also has implications for Miles, and his men of Red and Gold. Some have argued that he learns of the threat he mentions because he encountered a Gold shadow who made it to the Southern Continent. What if, instead of making it to the Southern Continent, he encountered a Gold shadow who made it off world? I'm sorry if there are any errors in this, I'm actually supposed to be writing my final essay, but darn it, I really want to figure out this Scadrian worldhopping thing! My other idea was finding something in Feruchemy since we have it confirmed there is a Terriswoman worldhopper running around Warbreaker.
  3. I didn't think of him as overly clever. I just found him thoroughly monstrous... I wanted him to die a very slow death, suffering terribly as he did so, and that's not something I particularly like feeling.
  4. Good point.
  5. Has anyone brought this up yet? Apologies if this has already been mentioned... EDIT: Link fixed.
  6. Thankyou Weiry, I didn't know about this! Let's actually quote it in here so we can examine it... (I've edited it all together, and edited out the irrelevant bits...) So... it's the inverse of Roshar, which means maybe the Seas represent the physical realm of Roshar in some way? Or do the seas represent the spiritual energy of the people living on the land it inverts? From the other comments we can deduce that there are other "Maps of Shadesmar" beyond this one, which join up to it on the expanse bits of this map, and they are the parts of Shadesmar corresponding to the other Shardworlds. Any guesses as to which world the Expanse of Destinies leads to? EDIT: Having read more of the source page, I've realised that my post here is somewhat redundant; they discuss it at length, and it is well worth a read. Also, apparently it is DENSITIES, not destinies. That said... These were the comments that really stuck out to me. We have four expanses to assign to Shardworlds. I am inclined to agree that Vibrance is Nalthis, and Vapours is Scadrial. I'd also be very surprised if Broken Sky wasn't Sel. Densities stumps me...
  7. Massive Song of Ice and Fire Spoiler.
  8. I find that very hard to believe, but I will await your quote. Surely, though, he would have mentioned that when he answered this:
  9. Perhaps that's why Honour is splintered and Cultivation isn't? Odium pits Cultivation against Honour, and rather than mutually annihilate each other, Cultivation survives, meaning that he has to deal with her personally and invest himself.
  10. That's... pretty abominable in my opinion... that would be like cutting hands off an opposing swordsman, or lobotomizing people who use their intellect against you. Honestly, between executing my enemies and maiming them, I would consider executing the more moral option. I agree with Darnam here. I think we need to draw a distinction between healing magic, and enhanced recovery. Allomantic pewter and holding Stormlight enhance your recovery, Feruchemical gold and Divine Breath, and probably Regrowth are healing magic. Given that Brandon has said that similar magics work the same way (all Illusion magic will work pretty much the way Lightweaving does), I think it's fair to say that Regrowth and Divine breath would, like Feruchemical gold, heal shardblade severing.
  11. GRRM: Cersei Lannister, Joffrey Baratheon, Ramsay Snow
  12. Call me dyslexic, but whenever I see the title of this post I read "LSD influences on Themes", especially if Gamma Fiend's trippy picture is next to it.
  13. The South would need to gain not only breath, but the ability to awaken things... while it does make sense, I'd be very surprised if breath was how it worked. I mean, if getting enough breath to run your Hemalurgy machines was that easy, I imagine the Lord Ruler would have gathered enough to get to the Fifth Heightening, rather than fiddle about with Atium.
  14. Awww. I'm so disappointed. I quite like Marsh, and was looking forward to hearing his perspective.
  15. I think if I ever gained superpowers in real life, I'd post their parameters on a forum as a "hypothetical". Make the internet work out all the cool things I could do with my powers for me.
  16. Copper also shields you from Emotional Allomancy. So even if we conclude that the difference Bronze blocks are a single thing, Copper still does two things. But then, is detecting metal, and moving metal one thing or two things?
  17. I don't mind it, but I'm disappointed no one studied its properties in greater detail. Could you imagine building a ter'angreal which could nudge the wheel backwards slightly, unraveling the pattern at that point, and allowing it to be rewoven in a different way? Essentially it would let you turn back time by a slight amount, giving you a reset button if you screw something up. You'd of course need a way to shield yourself from the effects, as reversing time by two minutes is useless unless you know what has happened and can act differently (thereby changing what is woven). Yes, I may have been inspired by the Omega 13 from Galaxy Quest...
  18. But staffed by Skaa barge workers. The MAG has an interesting piece on them... they're some of the most worldly and independent Skaa. They have a good life relative to some.
  19. Is there a line that implies non-plantation Skaa aren't allowed to travel? I mean, canal certainly travel, and merchant Skaa must. Is that line just because the plantation skaa are most oppressed of the skaa, or does it apply universally? Even if it does apply Universally I can see it working, with the players legitimized by a noble patron, early modern England style. EDIT: Yes this is because I want a Player crew or character for a MAG run.
  20. I thought it was: "giving as many as possible the opportunity to make their own choices" I have a question close to my heart: are there theatres or troupes of travelling Skaa players on Scadrial during the Final Empire?
  21. I haven't read the interlude yet (I don't care about spoilers) so naturally my reaction to reading all of this is... She can what?! Make investiture from food?! *begins sharpening an Atium spike* Kids! I'm going to Roshar!
  22. Obviously eliminating Talenel too. So if we're eliminating Shallash and Nalan, that means there are only 7 to account for.
  23. I agree that Hemalurgy (even nonlethal) is evil. But I'm suggesting possibilities for the Southern Kingdom's magic system, not commenting on whether I think they are a moral society.

    Kandra

To be honest, this quote always bothers me for a couple of reasons. 1) It's a bit harsh for an intelligent post-human species to be confined to animal bodies... honestly I'd flatly refuse to make that vow were I in their position. But more importantly, 2) The only Kandra we see in AoL are in human bodies: the woman who gave Wax his earring (MeLaan, right?) and Officer Brettin (TenSoon). What?! I thought they made a vow to only live in animal bodies! Or are main character Kandra allowed to ignore that rule? Oh, Sazed gave them the okay? Even with the word of their god, I doubt a group who enshrined a contract as the focus of their way of life for centuries would be anything but reticent to break a vow. Unless... maybe it just sucks so much living without opposable thumbs that they'll use any excuse to break the vow....
