I'm still hoping that Granny can pull through, but it's looking increasingly unlikely.

What type of camels make good actors? Drama-daries.

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs on a doorstep? Mat. What do you call a man with no arms and no legs in a swimming pool? Bob. What do you call a dog with no legs? Doesn't matter, he won't come!

Hobbits are Tolkien Minorities. (I can't take credit for the pun, though. I have to give credit to Mental Floss) I'll stop now. I don't want to make a hobbit of LotR jokes.

Brandon's match is up, and it's hilarious!

Duralumin enhanced shocks would basically destroy any Calvary charge. Also, several good Soothers/Rioters could probably get secrets out faster than any torturer. Soothing is normally useless if it's noticed, but with enough Mistings working in concert, I bet it would become impossible to resist the emotions they're Soothing/Rioting. Also good for causing the enemy general to commit suicide, if you're close enough.
-
I guess that the only emotions that would affect Moiraine's ability to reach saidar would be Rioting her fear of saidar (so that she'd be afraid to surrender to it), and similar emotions (uncertainty, etc). I doubt you could Riot them enough to disrupt someone who's been using the One Power for decades. I'm not even sure if you can Riot a specific fear, rather than fear in general. Breeze might be able to, but I doubt Kelsier can. I still think that strobing her emotions would make a powerful weapon, though.
-
So it is. But Breeze Soothes hunger and fatigue, so...

Fendin "Fiddle" Fathvell, Fendin "Fiddle" Fathvell, Fendin "Fiddle" Fathvell. There, I did it! Also, really excited!!
-
What about "strobing" the emotions - increasing and decreasing them suddenly, randomly, and all over the place? I think that strobing would be harder to deal with than simply strengthening emotions. Can you Soothe concentration? Also, there are some emotions that Aes Sedai are good at ignoring, but does that mean that they're good at ignoring all emotions? I think that attacking Moiraine with anger, fear, and hatred would be pointless, but what about distraction and confusion? And of course, heightened distraction and confusion make it inherently harder to deal with the emotions. Can you Riot thoughtlessness? What about dizziness?
-
You're probably right. If only Kelsier had Duralumin... Although we shouldn't rule it out. After all, Kelsier has a history of finding metals that weren't previously known to exist, and meddling in places where he isn't supposed to be. (and I still maintain that if you Riot shock and distraction suddenly, the target will be shocked and distracted, no matter how well they keep their emotions under control)
-
Hmm... That certainly hurts Kelsier's chances. Especially if he assumes that visual contact is needed.
-
Duralumin fueling any rioted emotion is hugely powerful. At that point, it doesn't matter if you're prepared, that emotion will squeeze out any other emotions - for a moment. I'm guessing that would distract any fighter.
-
Without Duralumin, Kel has an upper ceiling to the amount of power he can use at one time as well. So I'm not sure how Kel would benefit from an instant match. Between pewter, and allomancy not using his strength, Kelsier could probably outlast Moraine. But that would require a situation where Moraine is using her power for a long period of time without killing Kel, which seems unlikely.
-
I favor him fighting in mist. Obviously, with tin, Kelsier would be hindered less than Moraine (although she might be able to blow it away, and he'd be more hindered than in the Scadrial mists). Also, I'm pretty sure Moraine needs to be able to see Kelsier to hit him, while the metal Moraine is wearing would tell Kelsier exactly where Moraine is at all times.
-
What happens if you suddenly Riot surprise, distraction, and shock? I'm thinking that no matter how prepared you are, you're going to be very surprised, distracted, and shocked. Can you Riot dizziness? Probably not, since it's a physical sensation more than an emotion. But if hunger can be Rioted... What about forgetfulness?
-
The Suvudu Cage Match thread got me thinking about the offensive capabilities of Soothing and Rioting. So the question is, how useful would it be for a Rioter to violently and suddenly Riot an opponent's emotions during physical combat? I'm not talking about subtlety here, but about using Rioting as a distraction, to confuse and disorient the opponent.
-
I never said it'd be easy. It has the potential to knock her flat, but that's only potential. If he had Duralumin, I'd be rooting for Kelsier, but without it, the odds lean in Moraine's favor. As far as Kelsier's lack of skill goes, remember that his lack of skill mostly manifests in a lack of subtlety. If he uses "shock and awe" tactics, like Vin did to Straff, then this becomes less relevant. The cage matches tend to play fast and loose with how much each player knows about the other's powers. If Kelsier doesn't know how much the One Power is dependent of emotions, he likely won't try this. On the other hand, if Moraine doesn't know how Allomancy works, then she's much less likely to notice a touch on her emotions. Even Kelsier is subtle enough if you don't recognize what's happening. If I recall, the only emotion meddling in WoT is the Warder bond, which Moraine can block. I don't think she can block Rioting/Soothing by the same method, which may cause her problems.(If you haven't noticed, I think Moraine is more likely to win, but I'm rooting for Kelsier, so I'm working hard to find a justified way in which he could win.) EDIT: I've started a thread for the combat potential of emotional Allomancy here
-
I'd say that the biggest advantage that Kelsier has is Rioting and Soothing. Using the One Power requires a specific mental state, and using it without violating the Oaths requires another mental state. Now, Moraine is very good at controlling herself, and Kelsier isn't as skilled with these metals as others, but if Moraine isn't prepared for emotion manipulation, she could easily find herself helpless. I'd say Soothe her trust in saidin, and make her afraid to surrender herself to it. If Kelsier's successful, then Moraine is dead. Alternatively, just shock Moraine with as many emotion changes as you can.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Arcanist Lupus replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Probably not. I don't think it's explicitly stated, but I'm pretty sure it requires blood, which plants are sadly lacking in. -
I wouldn't underestimate Granny.
-
I've always assumed that the push/pull lines are affected similar to magnetism. It might not be exactly the same, but it seems a good analogy.
-
the one power definitely trumps Allomancy in terms of raw power. But if strength was all that mattered, Kelsier would have never beaten the Inquisitor. And atium cannot be overlooked. The One Power doesn't have any equivalent to immediate foresight. Kelsier will need a lot of metal though. This will be one expensive match for him. Although if he can Soothe away Moraine's sense of threat...
-
And how much metal is in her Sa'angreal. If Kelsier can get it away from her, his chances go way up. Also, I wonder how atium would interact with channeling. thirdly, setting becomes very important. The more out in the open they are, the harder it will be for Kelsier to escape her weaves. If they fight in the mist, my money would be on Kelsier. Either way, Kelsier's called the Survivor for a reason.

Is the magic system definitely part of the Cosmere, or could it be separate, like Alcatraz or I hate dragons? If it's separate, it doesn't have to necessarily conform to the same investiture rules as the rest do, although I think it's likely that it would anyway, as that's the way Brandon conceptualizes his major magic systems.
