Analysis of the dawnshards with new information
Dofurion replied to Dofurion's topic in Cosmere Discussion
These are all the ones I could find. If the ones I posted don't include what you're thinking of, you can give me more details about the context of the conversation that you remember. -
Why must every planet be a representative government
Dofurion replied to bmcclure7's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Because the more boring and consistent a democracy is, the better it performs its functions and the less "shocks" it gives its citizens. This is exemplified by a Chinese curse that translates more or less like this: "I wish you an interesting life" -
This topic has already been touched on in this post: Honestly, I expected the Bindsprens to be the Sprens associated with the Sibling (each Godspren having a different one) but the way things are going it seems that the list will be the same as the image, with the peculiarity that the Nightwatcher seems to share the same sprens as the Edgedancers (lifesprens) and the Sibling would have a set of 2 (lifesprens + glorysprens).

Why must every planet be a representative government
Dofurion replied to bmcclure7's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think I already made my points clear in that other thread, but to be clear. I built the nahelcracy based on intercepting the points where each order can lose its spren with the points where they would be a bad public servant. In political theory, all forms of government generate oligarchies, including democracies and anarchies. The difference lies in how closely the interests and incentives of these oligarchies align with the demands of the governed population and their medium- and long-term well-being. -
Why must every planet be a representative government
Dofurion replied to bmcclure7's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've already mentioned it in another post, given the intrinsic characteristics of Roshar, a good form of government would be what I call 'Nahelcracy' (government of the bond with the divine). A system based on trust in the impartiality of the Nahel. But given how the situation ends in the fifth book, it was not a good time to implement it either. -
Honorsprens vs Highsprens, now the debate makes sense.
Dofurion posted a topic in Stormlight Archive
I've read that with the revelations of WaT the debate between the Honorsprens and the Highsprens loses its meaning. But for me now it makes perfect sense. The debate is about which of the 2 is closer to Honor, now we have the information that A) The Hornorsprens were created entirely with the investiture of Honor and B) The Intention of Honor is more about Oaths and not about Honorability. So here what happens is that both peoples/species define "closeness" in a different way. -
Analysis of the dawnshards with new information
Dofurion replied to Dofurion's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just a note. Painter is a bad example since trapping Nightmares in paintings is a general cosmere mechanic, not something specific to Komashi. And what we do have related to Virtuosity are the Yoki Haijo whose skills are more on the technical side. After this book, I'm not really convinced that Unite is a Dawnshard commando. But I don't rule anything out. As a curiosity: before using the well to join the Listeners, the only ability that Mishram shows is healing. The truth is, I considered exchanging the primary dawnshard for the secondary and vice versa on several occasions, but since the double influence is a conjecture, I prefer to maintain the consistency of chapter 1. I'm glad you liked it. As a curiosity: between chapter 2 and chapter 3 I had another section in which I listed all the Shards associated with each other (according to Dawnshard) and in case『Feel』is correct, it fits with the number of Intentions that minimally resemble feelings and excludes all those that don't. -
Introduction To start off, I want to say that I've seen other users post this topic on the forum, but after seeing that this analysis was getting too long, I decided it was better to make a new post instead of just a comment on those threads. I'm going to divide this into chapters according to how my ideas have progressed. Chapter 1: Grouping Theory Let's start from the basis that many in the fandom (myself included) had conjectured that the Adonalsium Shards were organized into four sets, one for each dawnshard. The existence of said sets is reinforced by the following [WoB] . The nature of said sets and the inclusion of one or another shard would depend on what the commands manifested in the form of Shards of Dawn were. For a long time there was a debate between several possible sets: {Change, Union, Fission, Remained}, {Change, Survive, Union, X}, {Changed, Creation, Remained, Destruction} among other options (All of them include 'Change' because it was the only one confirmed). Well, now with the confirmation of exists as a dawnshard many of these hypothetical groups were discarded. Now, with the addition of exists I realized that perhaps the structure of the dawnshards is more similar to those of the awakening than we think. exists is a start command, while change is a modifier. Therefore I propose that the dawnshard different from the others is specifically exists, and the others are modifier commands. Also, with this revelation it is much easier to classify the shards. First, remember what the shards are: Devotion Dominion Preservation Ruin Endowment Honor Odium Cultivation Autonomy Ambition Valor Invention Mercy Whimsy Virtuosity Reason Which of these fit best with exists? In theory, they should be shards whose concept is linked to existence or that are defined from it. Preservation I think is the clear example, its intention is based on conservation or, defining it in a different way, the continued existence of something. Reason is the last shard to be revealed, but I feel that it fits very well within this category. Simply because reasoning is what defines the existence of an individual, the classic "I think therefore I am." Autonomy defines the distinction between multiple objects, the difference between the Self and what is not Self. As for Mercy, it goes for the "letting something exist" part. As for Rysn's dawnshard (change) I think that she has even more closed candidates. Ruin the intention of this shard forces her to bring about a continued change, in my opinion even if the cosmere reached a state of heat death, Ruin would seek to change that, either by causing the fall into a true void or something else. He will always seek to alter any state of stillness. Cultivation, I was reluctant to put her in this category before, but the shard's reaction to Taravangian/Odium's words implies that she does have a tendency to change. Invention, I think her name is more than enough of an argument, plus her actions (creating mega-structures and constantly moving) reflect a nature inclined to change. Virtuosity This one is weird to explain since the reason I put it here is because she is a shard whose way of acting seems like a mirror of Invention, only aimed at the artistic realm. So we would have 2 dawnshards left unrevealed. And here I would like to make several assumptions. As I stated before, the shards are a command in a very similar sense to those that someone can perform with breaths. There is a set of Adonalsium shards that are related to feelings. Based on the 2 previous points we could propose the hypothesis that feel is a dawnshard. So what would they be? Odium is the most logical option, the extreme emotion without context. Devotion would enter as the calm and prolonged emotions (the shard that took the Love portfolio, according to Taravangian). Whimsy would fall into this category since as noted in the Devotion section, there is a shard to which Taravangian attributes the feeling of 'self-indulgence' and the shard that best fits that term is Whimsy. And finally Valor, which is also a bit obvious that it would fall into this category. We have 4 left to assign: Honor Dominion Endowment Ambition And now we see a curious pattern forming: Honor as it became clear to us in this book, is more about self-imposed limitations than personal achievement or what is right. In parallel we have Dominion which is predictably defined by restrictions and/or actions imposed on others. A perfect pair of push and pull. As for Ambition and Endowment a similar relationship also emerges, but a little more subtle. Endowment works as the action of improving the life of someone other than yourself, while Ambition would be the desire to improve your own. It is more ethereal than the above but still noticeable. So this missing Dawnshard, how could it be named? Well, the best option I could think of was *act* (way of acting), it's the one I'm least sure of but it's also the one I see the most relationship between the shards that it would have associated with it. In conclusion, hypothetically we could organize the shards in the following way: 『Exists』 Preservation Reason Mercy Autonomy 『Change』 Invention Ruin Virtuosity Cultivation 『Feel』 (?) Devotion Whimsy Odium Valor 『Act』 (?) Honor Endowment Ambition Dominion Chapter 2: Double Grouping Conjecture Following on from what was proposed in Chapter 1, there is also a relatively widespread conjecture to be mentioned, which states that most shards have a "double influence from the dawnshards". To give an example: the 4 shards associated with the change command were affected by a second round of commands, with one of them receiving the change command again, while the other 3 were affected by the commands of the remaining 3 dawnshards. As a result, ¼ (4) of the shards were affected by a single command, while ¾ (12) were influenced by two different commands. Now I will proceed to give my personal organization and some (own) definitions to complement it. 『』= Main Dawnshard 「」= Secondary Dawnshard 『Exists』Preservation「Exists」 Nothing more to add, except what was already said in the previous chapter. Preservation is an Intent focused on maintaining the existence of things. 『Exists』Reason「Change」 Reasoning is the basis that defines a conscious being, but at the same time the ability to rethink its points of view based on the information available is what defines reason itself. 『Exists』Mercy「Feel」 We don't know much about Mercy, we can only make assumptions based on its name. And beyond what was said in the previous chapter, I can speculate that its intention has a certain emotional component. 『Exists』Autonomy「Act」 In addition to what has already been said about Autonomy in the previous chapter, its Intent can also be defined as a way of acting. 『Change』Invention「Exists」 Making changes to make things exist. 『Change』Ruin「Change」 The same as in the previous chapter. 『Change』Virtuosity「Feel」 Making changes to generate an emotional response 『Change』Cultivation「Act」 I define it as a way of acting, which allows change in a systematic way. 『Feel』Devotion「Exists」 A feeling directed unidirectionally towards something or it could be a feeling that defines the existence of the individual who feels Devotion. Either option works. 『Feel』Whimsy「Change」 A feeling of needing change or randomness. 『Feel』Odium「Feel」 Same as the previous chapter. 『Feel』Valor「Act」 A feeling of drive to act. 『Act』Endowment「Change」 A way of acting that encourages constant change. 『Act』Ambition「Feel」 A way of acting that is influenced by a particular feeling. 『Act』Dominion「Act」* 『Act』Honor「Exist」* I originally assigned these two to those positions arbitrarily, but after a comment from a friend who read the next chapter, it made me switch places. Chapter 3: Mirror Symmetry After doing all this thinking, just out of curiosity I decided to group the shards according to which dawnshars influenced them (according to this frame of thought) regardless of whether it is the "primary" or the "secondary" and that resulted in this scheme: Mono-affected Preservation『Exists』 Ruin『Change』 Odium『Feel』 Dominion『Act』 Bi-affected 『Exists』/『Change』 Reason Invention 『Exists』/『Feel』 Mercy Devotion 『Exists』/『Act』 Autonomy Honor 『Feel』/『Act』 Valor Ambition 『Change』/『Act』 Cultivation Endowment Now we see it forming a very curious pattern. Spontaneously, couples were formed whose intentions seem to be parallel (it almost seems like a reference to the Aeons of Gnoticism, if it weren't for the fact that Sanderson himself has said that he hasn't used that religion as inspiration[1]), except for the Honor-Autonomy pair. By this point I was planning to publish this analysis but a friend made me realize that perhaps it would be better to exchange Honor for Dominion, he told me that Dominion and Autonomy seemed like a better pair of intentions, and while that is a subjective opinion, it also made me realize that Honor fits much better as the shard that was only affected by the act command since from what we see in WaT, Honor is not defined by honorability, but rather by oaths. These oaths can direct the way of acting in any direction (as can be seen with the oaths of the Skybreakers and the Elsecallers). Which leaves us with the following scheme: Mono-affected Preservation『Exists』 Ruin『Change』 Odium『Feel』 Honor『Act』 Bi-affected 『Exists』/『Change』 Reason Invention 『Exists』/『Feel』 Mercy Devotion 『Exists』/『Act』 Autonomy Dominion 『Feel』/『Act』 Valor Ambition 『Change』/『Act』 Cultivation Endowment This, as ylou may have noticed, leaves us with another curiosity. Mono-affected shards are those that have ended up merging, see {Ruin + Preservation = Harmony} and {Honor + Odium = Retribution}. Which allows me to make the following speculation. Could the trend of shard fusions that we have seen in the books not be to mix the 16 shards again, but rather a way to limit the shards that have "less context"? At the end of it all we would not have a new Adonalsium, but a mini-Adonalsiun. Conclusions These would be all my conclusions for now. I know that these results can be influenced by my own points of view and although everything is internally coherent, it is necessary to remember what basis I am starting from. I would like to read your opinions. Note: Looking back at WoB, it turns out I confused Gnosticism and Orphism. Brandon has considered Gnosticism as an inspiration, but he hasn't considered Orphism.

I have another interpretation: ? 『Dominion』 『Ambition』 『Endowment』 『Honor』 Exists 『Preservation』 『Reason』 『Autonomy』 『Mercy』 Change 『Cultivation』 『Ruin』 『Invention』 『Whimsy』 Feel (?) 『Odium』 『Devotion』 『Valor』 『Virtuosity』

Post WaT Rosharan Fabrial Mechanical Development
Dofurion replied to Calten_Gnomercy's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think the real tech boom will come when Sigzil returns to Roshar. -
Well, while I don't think Kaladin is directly bonded to the wind, I do think he's a Bondsmith now. First we see that Syl, after the disintegration of the Stormfather, spontaneously changes her clothes (without her wishing it) for one of royal appearance. Later, when Kaladin takes the oath to become Herald, she is the one who accepts it (with her voice in capital letters). Finally when everything is done, Kaladin begins to attract Gloryspren's along with Windspren's. These three facts seem enough to me to surmise that Syl became a Godspren. (And presumably her return brings with it the return of Stormlight)

I was just thinking that the Rosharians have the perfect tools to do the relevant tests on high entropy materials. My opinion is that the Rosharians could start with fantastic technology (Fabrials) but in the long run they would end up developing the technology that is theoretically possible in real life. While the Scadrians would start with recognizable technologies, they would eventually develop totally fantastic technology. SoD2 But I understand that Sanderson's plan is the opposite of what I think. I imagine that fans of [Hafnium 178m2] would be delighted

You see, that must be because I have a different vision of the Dominion's intention, not only do I see it as a shard that seeks the concentration of power, but it also seems to me to be a shard that is aligned with the search for... I think I'd better give an example: In terms of the Cosmere, many see Dominion as the perfect shard to represent Fjorden, I personally see that it would be the middle ground between them and JinDo. The latter being a people who, from what can be seen from their Invested Art, seek their own Dominion and mastery in the things they do. What greater opposite to that than the Shard closest to the concept of Chaos that we have? Yes, I see this Shard as OCD Nightmares are not something particular to this Shard, it is something more general. Although particularly in this duo I doubt which metal to assign. Either of the two (Bronze and Copper) works for these Shards. No, but we do have a fair amount of guesswork. We know there is a powerful entity in the Cosmere that is creating mega-structures for multiple purposes. Canticle is one such structure as is one called "The Grand Apparatus." We can also discard entities: It doesn't seem to be the Aether's modus operandi, so we can rule them out. With the shards we already know that their mode of action is restricted by their Intent, and of the 16 the only one that fits is Invention. I'm glad that you like interacting in the forum.

Mainly because of the issue of her intentions, from what we know of Dominion, that Shard seeks control and order. While Whimsy, as her name indicates, seems to be her natural opposite. Mainly because of the effects of the associated metals. Virtuosity in the definition that Brandon is working with is about excellence in a specific field (in this case art) but here it impacts knowledge. And as for Mercy, the theme of storing wakefulness fits very well thematically. Basically from what was seen in The Sunlit Man The manifestation of investiture there works in the opposite way to how it works in Naltis (Instead of granting, it steals) and by elimination the only entity that could have created said planet as it is, is Invention Electrum is related to (Determination and the Future), Ambition seems to me to be a splinter very aligned with that.

@DrPhysics I have an idea about physics and I want to know if it is feasible or not. You see, I'm just an amateur when it comes to physics, but I'm very interested in the curiosities that one can find. I recently found a meme on Pinterest that talked about non-Euclidean space, specifically this one: So I started looking for information about non-Euclidean space and found that it is basically what allowed Einstein to develop his theory, by considering the deformations of space and that it did not always "go straight." Then the typical visual representation of the tarp and the balls came to my mind. A 2D representation to understand approximately what it would look like in 3D. Then I realized something, normally these materials go back to being completely flat when you remove the objects inside of it. But that's because of the material these demonstrations are normally made with, if they were made with something like plastic this would leave a mark on it. So let's say that mark is elliptical, the sum of its internal angles should be greater than 180°, if you force something like that to become "straight" again you would end up with something longer than you had in the beginning. This is normally due to the thinning of the materials but what if with space it simply resulted in the creation of more space? Summing up, could dark energy be an emergent quality of the creation of space that is forced to resume Euclidean characteristics after the objects that deformed it left that specific point? Again, I'm not an expert on the subject, I don't know if I'm missing something that contradicts everything I wrote or if there is already a similar conjecture. Also, what I write is not fully understood when translated. I just wanted to see if someone could help me out with this doubt and frankly you are the only physicist I know. I also know that this question has nothing to do with the Cosmere but I don't think it's wrong to ask it in this thread.

Do people still have to snap to awaken their Allomancy.
Dofurion replied to ruler of the mists's topic in Mistborn
A recurring thought I have when thinking about this topic is that Harmony is probably putting pressure on the system to make Snap easier, just as Ruin did by increasing the amount of spikes that bodies could withstand. I hypothesize that this is the reason for her gradual conversion to "Discord." -
Of course, for long distance use I don't think it would be feasible. Unless of course we're talking about an Oathgate or, speculating a bit, a 5th Ideal Radiant. But where it could be seen is at short distances, let's imagine for a second Jasnah using the Shardblade shooting technique that Adolin uses, and suddenly appearing unexpectedly next to him on the battlefield. That would be a substantial increase in her mobility. I'm not really a fan of giving Shallan that ability, she would be becoming so powerful that we'd expect a nerf to her for the benefit of the plot, and I wouldn't want that to happen.
-
Based on the comments Shallan made in the last few chapters, I think we can already make some educated guesses about the mechanical workings of this Surge. The basic guess is this: What if the Transport works like the TP in MMOs? The TP in this case being the Spren. Shallan mentions that in some way her bond with her 2 Sprens is pulling her towards the Cognitive Realm. At this point I realized something, if this is the case, then it would explain why it is easier for an Elsecaller (and presumably a Willshaper as well) to go to the Cognitive Realm than back. Because it would be the Radiant that is drawn to its Spren, and its Spren is drawn to the Cognitive Realm. So, if this is the case, it may be that for the Radiants to transport to another place in the same realm, their Sprens would have to be a considerable distance away from them. Making an analogy, it would be something similar to how the Ender Pearl's work in Minecraft. Where the player is transported to the position where the pearl hits.

A question, can the WoBs that have to do with the anti-investiture be given the investiture tag or should they have their own?
-
I honestly don't think that's the case. The difference is emphasized enough in the narrative for it to be noticeable. I have to admit that you may be right here. But my guess is that it would be a case similar to Ruina's with Atium, where she would have to intervene directly to reincorporate it into her being. That's exactly the point. Put him in a situation where he has no choice but to invest more in the system. - One last thing I forgot to add. And that is that, before the existence of the Everstorm, the Fused were more closely tied to Odium, since according to Rayse's arguments, before they could have accepted the terms proposed by Hoid, and now they can't.

End of RoW, El's experiments with anti‐voidlight
-
OK, analyzing the information on Honor, the Stormfather, and the Oathpact that we have available, I came to a somewhat less striking conclusion about "shame" but that I think is still interesting to publish. The shame of Tanavast and by extension of the current Stormfather is to copy Leras' plan. Let's start from what we know of the immediate context after the oath was promulgated. Odium locked in Braize, being able to attack Roshar again with all his Fused after successfully torturing some Herald to break. Honor creating 10 Heralds to bear the burden of keeping Odium locked up, guiding the reconstruction of humanity until stabilizing the social situation of humans. Then voluntarily returning to Braize to endure the torture. Conjecture to keep in mind: Honor and Cultivation allowed Odium's entry as a plan to lock him in the Rosharian system. So this creates a very similar scenario, if not identical, to that of Ruin and Preservation in Scadrial. One Shard wants to keep another Shard locked up and achieves this by locking its body in a specific place. So I imagine you're wondering, what's so shameful about this? Well, the detail lies in the mechanics of the return by Odium's forces as well as the difference in strength with respect to Honor. The Fused initially used a much more direct method to return to battle, Odium himself created a body for them (We see this at the end of RoW) which implies a direct expenditure of their investment, investment that did not return to circulate in their investment reservoir. In theory the same thing happened with Honor, but here you have to take into account the investment given for each Shard, Honor invested 10 for each Desolation, Odium had to replenish more than 900 (Conjecture). So what's the shame? Well, Honor used all of Roshar as a battlefield in a deliberate attrition situation. Risking thousands of lives of both Humans and Singers in order to wear down Odium power in the long term. Note: I would also like to add as a curiosity that Honor's unforeseen troops, the Radiants, were excessively over-regulated. It is a topic in itself that I would like to address after the release of the full book.

I'm betting on Lightspren, if we follow the possible pattern that Renarin gives us, the only type of Enlightened Spren that can use conventional Transportation are those. Duralumin. -- I wonder if Shallan tried to reconvert that anti-light into normal light, in theory Illumination can do that.
