Why the Ghostbloods want Stormlight so badly
Leuthie replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Theoretically. They can't get it yet. -
Why the Ghostbloods want Stormlight so badly
Leuthie replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ghostbloods already have containers of Dor. Both are hard to get, but they can already get Dor. So is Stormlight easier to use? And why? -
How did that quote contradict anything I said (aside from the random percentages I picked. Maybe it's more 90-10 or 95-5)? How is his Aon hand waving anything but an obvious fudging? It's an absurdity. "I can't remove someone's curse, but I can confound the words as long as they rhyme" is a fun ending to a story, not how Aons work. He may have fixed Charlie's problem of being a rat, but he didn't do it the way he described. He took artistic liberty there. Until Brandon fields a question that directly confirms that "if you know the exact wording of an Aon, you can find fun analogues and rhymes to change them", that's how I see it. What Hoid actually did could be very close to what he described, but much more involved and much less entertaining. Same with the true story between him, the Sorceress and becoming an Elantrian. There's something missing there, but it doesn't serve the story so Hoid doesn't include it. I'm not saying he's lying about the results in the story, I'm saying he's taking artistic liberty with the details. I could be wrong. But it's how I explain the absurdity of those particular methods in the context of the Cosmere as I know it.

While 75% of the story is probably true, 25% of it is Hoid. Him changing Charlie's curse is 100% Hoid in service of the story. Hell, the curse and mechanics of him becoming Elantrian is probably 50% Hoid. The actual story is most likely messier and doesn't have as happy an ending.

We have had Mistborn and Mistings. There will end up being something in between. Multi-mistings, or Limited Mistborn. We've had mists and lerasium beads. The latter created Mistings, the former created Mistborn. So...seems we're getting something in between (inhalable Lerasium)

Why would you use logic gates and Awakening? Using Investiture instead of electricity is one reason, but it seems a waste of Investiture. If you have access to the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms, there are much easier ways to develop a thought machine besides logic gates. I'm 99% certain that Cognitive silliness is used in lieu of what we would define as a computer. Programmable Cognitive entities fueled by Breaths and tied to a Physical console. If you can Awaken Physical object, you can probably awaken Cognitive entities to serve similar purposes.

Healing and the brain vs healing and the soul
Leuthie replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If the soul leaves the body of a Gold Ferring, the Connection to the abilities and the stored metalminds is severed. The Cognitive Shadow doesn't have access to the stored health. The stored health is lost. It's locked within a locked metalmind that doesn't have a key. Keyed metalminds are just pieces of metal after the one that made them dies. -
Healing and the brain vs healing and the soul
Leuthie replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Don't see why not. Just need enough brain power to tap the metalmind and heal the rest of the brain before the soul leaves the Physical form. -
Ulaam is just another Kandra that Harmony has sent out into the Cosmere. It's possible that Ulaam was sent specifically to track Hoid.

Kelsier's bones were available, and a WOB says someone looking to reConnect with their old body needs the help of a Shard. Kelsier couldn't do it himself. So Kelsier's bones, some help from Sazed, and a spike or three reformed Kelsier's body. Mistwraith processes may have been used, and a spike or two might have been charged using a mistwraith, but I don't think Kelsier is a mistwraith.

Salt as a general term refers to the result of an acid-base reaction, where the hydrogen is replaced by another cation, usually a metal. That fact could be significant, and might even be something that could be explored in the future with Scadrial magic systems. But I think the salt referred to in spore deaths is sodium chloride and Brandon means the death of the spores to be the same reaction as snails and other water sensitive creatures when in contact with sodium chloride.

The word you're looking for is Connection. It's the Spiritual bond through which Investiture is exchanged.

Has Sazed already become Discord in TLM?
Leuthie replied to SingleSoul's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Names are social constructs. If the people call it discordium, it's discordium. I guess it would just be a new name for the same metal. Kind of like Discord is a new name for the same Shard. -
It also doesn't sound like Sazed's thing. If there's anyone he would take control of to keep him from ruining plans, it would be Kelsier, but I still think Sazed-as-Harmony would avoid direct control/possession and would definitely balk at destroying memories. Ruin's influence wouldn't make those actions more likely, either.

The fight was great because it was well written. The complimentary powers gave Sanderson great tools to use to develop the narrative. The power differential, like any good comic book, changes to match the current situation and action. Sanderson did a great job balancing the power levels when needed, showing lack of balance to create tension, showing good decision making to resolve the tension, responses to bring tension back, etc. All of the tools were used and the fight was well done. The arguments in this thread are circular and mostly Frustrating.

Has Sazed already become Discord in TLM?
Leuthie replied to SingleSoul's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Sazed's personality matches the combined Shard's intent: The problem with the Shards has nothing to do with Sazed. Sazed is the best person to hold this particular combination. The problem is integral to the Shards themselves. They are at odds with each other. Sazed has to mediate the war going on between the two halves, resulting in his inactivity. Most actions would go against one Shard or the other, so his actions are limited. Ruin is "stronger" than Preservation. Sazed will be changed by the Shards over time. The imbalance will skew that change in a particular direction. That change in personality will be explored in Era 3: Even if Ruin becomes more prevalent over time, resulting in an Intent change to Discord (and a new metal, discordium), it will still be Sazed struggling to mediate between two opposing Shards. Adonalsium had, effectively, 16 Shards to contend with, as do we all. Preservation will always temper the destructive forces of Ruin, Ruin will always shake up the stasis imposed by Preservation, and Sazed will always be pushed to inactivity by the opposition. I get the feeling this will come up in Era 3 and have an effect on the outcomes but won't be the central conflict. If it is the central conflict, Sazed is going to fix it by picking up a third Shard. The real question: What Shards would break up the stalemate and which one would be best? Wisdom? The triad should result in the Serenity Shard: "God, grant me the Preservation to accept the things I cannot change, the Ruin to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference" -
Is the sun invested, or does the sand react to the radiation of the normal sun?

Salt acts on many proteins to expose their hydrophobic regions. Spores need water. Introduce salt and the hydrophobic regions of the spores will cause them to lose the water they have, causing death. Like snails or slugs.

Hoid and his habit of calling shard vessels by their name
Leuthie replied to newindianclassic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Possible it's a misdirection. But "with sixteen other people" is pretty clear who was speaking and who they were speaking to (and the conversation could have simply been the action of the Shattering; no need for Adonalsium to be a conversational type). The situation in the story and the way Hoid describes the phrase heavily (like lead gloves heavily) implies the hubris. I'm not sure how we can't read too much into that clip. -
Hoid and his habit of calling shard vessels by their name
Leuthie replied to newindianclassic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
While we already knew that Hoid and most, if not all, of the 16 are now at odds about their decision, this little clip is the most direct that Hoid has been about it. He's telling us directly that the Shattering was caused by hubris and really shouldn't have happened; well, as direct as an implied statement can be. Heavy handed implication, if you will. I think we can pretty much confirm that Hoid is trying to put Adonalsium back together. -
The Four Dawnshards as the Cosmere Unified Field Theory
Leuthie replied to TheoreticalMagic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is the first set of possible Dawnshards I've seen that puts them in a place above the Shards. This is not just the set of things that Shards can do with Investiture, it's the limits imposed on the set of things that Shards can do with Investiture. To destroy Adonalsium, the tool would have to be able to impose on Adonalsium in some way. Making the Dawnshards into the LIMITS of what can be done, the very stuff that defines what is (EXIST), what can be (CHANGE), what the value is (WEIGH), and when all of that can be done (MOVE) is much closer to something that can destroy God than previous explanations. I disagree that the Shards should fit into individual categories based on Dawnshards, but that's a different set of arguments. -
Didn't want to overstate as I don't really remember. But Endowment doesn't like anyone outside of Nalthis all that much.
-
Vasher is Returned, a special kind of Cognitive Shadow given physical form by Endowment. Hoid isn't Returned. He is, quite possibly, a Cognitive Shadow, much like Kelsier, the Heralds, the Fused, etc. He's lived 10,000+ years. He's held a Dawnshard. He's Invested with several types of magic from around the Cosmere. He's changed enough that even if he isn't technically a Cognitive Shadow, he's just as far away from what he was when he could consider himself human (or Yolish or whatever). So he describes himself in much the same way as other entities that have existed too long. But he's not a Returned. I don't think Endowment likes him that all that much.

Thanasmia is the name of the Midnight primal Aether that's on the moon spitting out Midnight spores. The other Aethers have names, and we know a couple of them, one from the mouth of an Aetherbound. There's no reason to think this name didn't come from someone bound to the Midnight Aether and spread to be widely known.

is that a Shard name? or a Dawnshard name?
Leuthie replied to Adamkarma's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Fortune/Fate should be a Dawnshard, and should be the Dawnshard that Hoid held.
