  1. Also it would seem to make more sense if Taln were the crazy one. Abandoned by all others, taking the torture meant for all ten of them. The unending torture seems like it would be more likely to drive someone insane than not being tortured for that same amount of time. Not to mention they've had food, wine, money and the inate power that comes from being effectively immortal. As a tangent I think that the Boon and Curse lady is likely a Herald. I know that her powers seem far outside the bounds of what Stormlight or surgebinding can do, but with thousands of years to practice and study i think you'd be able to find new and interesting ways to use it. Especially being a Sanderson magic system, there's always another secret.
  2. I have not seen that quote about the spren assisted growth before. I like your theory Unworldly. Another possibility is that whatever spren it is makes a 1/4 upward lashing on the Chasmfiends, effectively making them way only half as much as they should. This may also mean that Dalinar not being crushed by the Chasmfiend is not quite as impressive as it would have been if it were dead and crushing him.
  3. Very cool. It's well done, can't think of any criticisms other than the gun and plants
  4. I like this idea. Not sure if it's true but i suspect we'll get a bit more evidence in AoL. I can't wait for the next trilogy That's where stuff will get fun! Edit: i need a spellchecker
  5. A few things. Force = Mass * Accerleration. Acceleration = change in Volocity. Volocity = Speed and direction. As for momentum, isn't that just another word for Inertia? If not what do we mean by it? As for the thought problems, 1 and 2 would work fine, 3 not so much. No matter your mass the cannonballs stay the same, they will always be attracted to the ground at the same rate.
  6. I believe in the visions Honor says that he didn't see Odium killing coming. that would have to mean it was not a part of a bargain, at least not that Honor knew about.
  7. It sounded to me like he was saying that all the spren who make the bond, making people surgebinders, are not as adaquate at separating the good from the bad, as honorspren (a specific Nahel bonding spren) were. and that bonding with a spren does not make one any wiser. EDIT: spelling is terrible
  8. Then you'd have to deal with Nahadon saying that not all spren were as descerning as Honourspren, in reference to sother surgebinders having powers. Obviously more kinds of spren than Nahadon's "Honorspren" can form the bond.
  9. Please, please, please please times a sideways eight!!!
  10. I don't think comics are usually too big into costs or limits to power in general. I mean wolverine grows back from a skeleton after being thrown in lava, Superman uses his abilities without cost, etc. It's just that it turns out elctromagnitism has a much more far reaching impact than was probably suspected at the time.
  11. I think that's definitely how fabrials work. However fabrials are a replacement for the magic system right? More machine than magic, and as such is probably at least less efficient, but based on the same basic principles. Also i'd love to see how Syl reacts to a powered fabrial.
  12. I quite agree. I like this Idea a lot. Good job old chap!
  13. If you say it a certain way, the soft o sound like in 'on' and the british a sound, then Roshar is symetrical. it's just spelled strangely. I think the symetry that is so vaunted is a spoken symetry rather than a written one, which can be hard to get across in a written medium. EDIT: spelling and grammar.
  14. Yes, this could very well be a step they needed to take. In fact It could be taht the Parshendi are also looking for evidence the Alethi are worthy allies themselves. Doesn't one of their sharbearers say "I found you at last" or something like that to Dahlinar near the end of book 1?
  15. A bad, yet necessary start. Through many cultures the way you, or fighting an opponent is often considered the sincerest form of communication. The Alethi STILL treat the parshendi as more of a novelty, a sideshow act. "Look, it's a parshamn that thinks it's a person. HA ha ha." Even after the treaty they were considered slightly smarter parshmen, who they regard as little more than animals. I think the Parshendi knew the Final Desolation was coming, and very quickly. They didn't have time to convince the Alethi that they were equal, or even helpfull at all really. Except through battle. Look at what Dahlinar and Kaladin have found out about them, solely through fighting. They have full shardbearers. Further the shardbearers are skilled, they obviously didn't just pick them up lying around. They never bring in their numbers advantage at a plateu assalt. They salute worthy warriors, even on the other side of the conflict. They obviously have a society and taboos, they have rituals for their dead, etc. I think they are hoping the Alethi either gain respect for them allowing for a TRUE alliance. (And really how else can you gain the respect of an Alethi?) OR that when the desolation comes, the alethi will be smart enough to ally with the people who have been holding their own in an all out war, agaisnt those who want to destroy all life on Roshar. So yes, it was a bad start. But i think ultimately it was supposed to be for the good of both races.
  16. Based on a youtube video of a reading Brandon did, I have some to a new conclusion. First, some facts: -Humans have red blood, Greatshells have purple, and Parshendi orange. -The only known visual representation we have of the Voidbringers looks ALOT like a Greatshell. Now to my speculation. Brandon did a reading (Suvudu recorded it and put it on youtube) where he read the prelude. It caught my attention that when Kalak looks around the battlefield he mentions that he sees the bodies of fallen allies and enemies. He mentions the blood mixing. I believe that it means the two closer species with the more similar blood (one of the ten essences) were the allies fighting against the purpleblooded enemy (opposite of orange on the color wheel). I believe the Parshendi sent Szeth to assassinate Gavilar in order to START the war. 'Why?' I can hear you asking. I think they knew the desolation was coming, but had no link left to humankind. They started the war to show by deed and battle, that they ARE honorable. Also taht they are strong and have value to contribute. They know how uniting a shared threat can be. They were trying to set up the possibilty of an alliance before the voidbringer come. Maybe this should have it's own thread though, i dunno so i'll post it here first
  17. Lol, thanks, Taim's a pain. I say yes. IF the spren is observed only moving up, AND written that it only moves up, I think it will always only move up. That is not to say that it doesn't disappear at a certain altitude and reappear at a lower to continue it's upward journey. I further think that the Glyphs are a very refined form of writing, that are capable of trapping spren in a specific physical form, such as Plate and perhaps Blades. I believe this theory fits well with what we know of the way Fabrials work.
  18. I think probably someone once observed this spren doing that particular action, and wrote it down. Now that spren is stuck doing that same thing all the time. As Axies seems to be determined to go around doing now, measuring all the spren he can, and writing about them.
  19. See, here the thing though, one goblet spren, one goblet. Many pieces of broken metal, many metal spren? It's nature is now fundamentally different than it was. I doubt they'd be "broken goblet spren" but even so they are no longer a spren of a goblet, they are different. I think we have no where near enough information as of yet. For instance the many flame spren and wind spren etc, I doubt they originally were one big wind spren of the only wind in existence. There are many types of spren i think, probably more than have been hinted at.
  20. 1. Not sure of the specifics, but anyone with Plate and Blade should be nearly invincible except to an experienced dual Shard holder. 2. The Thrill. Think of it the way people play GTA, seemingly infinite power against pedestrians and some small time Cops, a bit of mayhem can be fun. Add to this the Thrill that creeps into (at least) the Shardbearers, and I could easily see someone wading into a battle swinging their mist sword around, killing scores of infantry, wearing their magic armor regardless of their original mission.
  21. Thanks!! I just entered, and at that time there were already 942 entries. As a side note, they had the most entertaining terms and conditions i've ever read.
  22. Yeah, I remember that conversation. However I attribute it to one of those things that people believe but are not true. It seems very... provincal? It seems too simple and easy, and given the way his mother was prone to quick wittedness and joking around I'm not even sure she's 100% serious herself when she says that. Kinda like when kids ask 'why' a million times in a row, eventually you just start making stuff up. I'd be willing to bet that spren questions are very like this in a time when the population at large knows almost nothing about spren.
  23. Well we have been able to slow light down to 38 MPH www.jupiterscientific.org/sciinfo/slowlight.html so it is entirely possible that the edge of the bubble has a physical effect as well as a temporal one.
