While this thinking may be a valid philiosophy here, on Earth, it runs antithetical to the way Roshar runs. The whole basis for magic (that we've seen) is based on the fact that ends do not justify the means. Specifically "Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination." One could argue that cultivation might have the opposite approach. That anything that builds up or influences things for the better, in the end is ok. I think this would depend on how Odium, honor, and Cultivation have reacted and mingled. I think it is, and would be, far to easy for Odium to influence those who do wrong, thinking it'll be ok if it all works out in the end.

I wanted to vote Tam. I really did. However Lan has the warder bond, plus the whole "not living as a shepard on a farm for the last 20 years" thing going for him.

Possible 3rd/4th named Knights Radiant order
Asha'man Logain replied to Empyrus's topic in Stormlight Archive
Until now I had actually never even thought that Dustbringers could be an order of the KR. Perhaps is is just my, dark, sarcastic or wry sense of humor, but I'd always heard it in my head as a sarcastic remark. He is surveying the battlefield, looking upon the death and destruction. It seems to me one could make that comment about any battle field. One could say the same about the Japanese pilots at Pearl Harbor. If one were to walk up the pier, surrounded by the smoke and mostly sunken vessels, and say (or think) The Kamazi did their job well, not in admiration, but in acknowledgment of the near total destruction. But hey, I could be (and often am) wrong. EDIT- Spelling and grammar and capitalization. I was tired. lol -
I think it is possible. If you'll recall ***(spoilers)*** Rand in a later book (consequently the pattern is thinner and in more danger of unraveling) is convinced, and convinces others that he can directly bend the pattern to his will. He says something close to: "Do you believe if I will it I can write you out of the pattern? Without channeling or doing anything?" Also, as the strongest of 3 ta'veren the pattern already bends around him and provides him with what and who he needs. It may not be the mostlikely explaination but I do think it is A possiblity.

Sanderson Fan First or Jordan Fan First?
Asha'man Logain replied to SirZelig's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Actually I was a RJ fan first, but I discovered Brandon and became a huge fan of his as the mistborn triology was finished, but before Mr. Jordan's unfortunate demise. -
I was going to jump in with the quote where brandon tells us to look at the similarities between the Aons that shaped the magic (power of creation) that came through, and that the molecules' shape (of 16 oparticular metals) did the same type of thing. After all, Adonalsium was or was using the power of Creation itself, these shards are all aspects of that. It follows then that all the shards access differing parts of creation. That quote above is better though. I can definitely see the power manifesting in different ways based on frequency and wavelength. Just as all electromagnetic radiation is essentially the same, but its frequency and (primarily) wavelength change how it acts, from gamma rays, to visble light, to heat itself. I'm teatering on the edge of esposation (espousal?) myself!! Good one.

I do not think it is a spren. I don't think Szeth has any connection to any spren. I have seen speculation on whether his Oath stone is a magical stone, or normal stone. I personally feel that is a religiously signifigant stone artifact but not actually magical, based mostly on the few tidbits we get of the Stone Shamanism religion that seems to be found in the Shin people. I of course could be very wrong on every point, brandon's books tend to do that to me

I seriously doubt the Ars Arcanum was written by Jasnah. I believe we have the Word of Brandon, that all the AAs were written by the same character. Also that they are 'in world'.

What plot twists have you guessed incorrectly?
Asha'man Logain replied to Lightflame's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ok lets see, I'll only count pure Brandon books. Cosmere stuff, cause the dumb things i've believed about WoT boggle the mind. I read mistborn series first. I never saw kelsier dying, I thought he'd figured out a trick, akin to, but not the Lord Ruler's and was convinced that the people seeing him in the mists were actually seeing him. Nope. He dead. Just flat out missed the entire brass earring, Ruin/Reen deal. I was also convinced that the Deepness was NOT the mists. Yeah.... not so much. I thought Demoux was the traitor. I thought Elend was the Hero of Ages, and was writing the epigraphs. As for stormlight, I am still clinging to my erroneous beliefs until Brandon himself says i'm wrong... and then a while after -
LOL. Well it does now! I think you just came up with a new T-shirt idea

Which is why I think Renarin was sick and dying. Dalinar goes and asks (unselfishly) for his son to live. His curse is to lose all memory of his wife. Gaining one person's life at the expense of another. Not really a heavy curse, as the curse could easily be another's or Dalinar's own life, instead because he was self-less in his boon request, he loses the life he remembered with his wife. Which, I think we have hints of, he likely wasn't as happy as he'd have been with Navani. Perhaps losing his memory of her is all that lets his honor bend enough to be with Navani. Heaps of speculation, I know. But this is what I think is going on for now. Maybe book 2 will crush my theories, either way, there will be more ammo for more baseless theories.

I've been of the opinion that the shardblades were corrupted by Odium, but originaly and mostly of Honor. Here's my rational. Honor is behind the Heralds and (presumably) the Knights Radiant. The Plate and Blade are both tools of the Radiants. Something changed, causing the KR to abandon their tools. Blades do not cut anything living, but slice through non-living things almost without resistance. I think that Odium, through his own powers, or perhaps through 9/10 of the Heralds splitting hairs about their Oathpact, was able to corrupt the Blades. He was not able to completely change their purpose (i.e. make them sever living things) but was able to make them sever the Spritual or Cognitive aspects of a living thing, thereby killing it. This could explain why the KR abandoned the shards, also why Syl doesn't like them, yet still allow them to be tools of Honor originaly. I no longer recall which bits of that were my own thoughts and which I got from here TWG etc. It doesn't really matter, I suppose but I don't want to claim credit for others' musings.
-
But he also seems to feel a bit guilty about it and Renarin's poor health. There's no reason to feel guilty about forgetting his wife unless he thinks he asked for it. And there's no reason to feel guilt for his son's poor health unless he feels responsible for it, as if he thinks it's his curse. Also he stated very decisively that he knows for certain what his curse and boon were. I for one view a charcter's certainty (espescially about memory altering events) suspect.

wow. that was great. Thanks for finding that for us. It's good to know i'm not the only one having embarrassing emotional outbursts while reading in public. lol

Allomantic Internet!!! nice.

I was under the impression that different spren bonded to people causing the different orders. So windrunners would have honorspren, Say, whatever catagory Shallan would be bond with the Truthspren etc.
-
But also remember that 'something different' is going on with Szeth. His powers may be based on his Truthless status, rather than the normal 'Radiant-naheel bond-action based' powers that the others in the world are manifesting.
-
I want to disagree. I do in fact think you're incorrect. HOWEVER, this would lend a more enlightening look at Nahadon's comments about Surgebinders. He says (IIRC) that (to paraphrase)not all spren who provide surgebinding powers are as discerning as Honorspren. What if he meant that all Surgebinders MUST adhere to their Oaths(both the Ideals and normal promises), or abide 'honorably'. But, the Honorspren bonded, keep the intent as well as the letter of the oaths, where as others may only adhere to the letter. While not lying or breaking promises, perhaps providing very misleading fulfillments of their oaths Aes Sedai, or Elven style (depending on the particular flavor of Fantasy). If we assume Surgebinding is of Honor (pretty much a given) and their access to magic is based on what they do i.e. act honorably, then likely surgebinders (except Szeth of course) would be unable to perform acts of blatant dishonor, without sacrificing power. Interesting. I do however think that in this particular instance the intent of the oath is far more important than the exact words. Remember this was not an Ideal he spoke, not a 'capital O' Oath, this was a familial promise to his son.
-
LOL I read the exact same thing the first time. It confused me so much I had to go back and re-read it
-
I like this line of reasoning. Also, Seth while a surgebinder, is NOT a Radiant in training. Something different is happening with him, which i take to mean his powers are NOT coming from the Naheel Bond.
-
Dalinar seems to think that he got the boon of losing the memory of his wife, and that his curse is Renarin's poor health. I, however, think Dalinar aked for his son to live, or to 'not lose his son'. This I think was his boon, and the curse, taking something equal away, was losing all memory of his wife. IIRC we are told that you ask for a boon and you get a boon (not necessarily what you intended) and she gives you a curse equal to your boon. This feels to me something that is kind of balanced, but not as harsh as it could be since the boon asked was not entirely self-serving.
-
Would this not then imply, that whilst storing you'd have no luck, but while tapping you could have an increase in BAD luck as well as good. This doesn't seem to be all that beneficial. It'd be almost like a ta'veren, an increase of all improbabilities, not just the good ones.

Sazed says this in the HoA pre-chapter epigraphs (is that the right word?) that ruin was capable of long term thinking, and says verbatum "Ruin was capable of building things up in order to destroy more"
