  1. Unless he's about to get all GRRM on us... I think Adolin will survive at least through book 5
  2. I started at the beginning: Elantris, Mistborn Trilogy, Warbreaker... I've basically read them in order published.
  3. Thank you for sharing! One thing, and I may just be mis-reading your post, you say "she recognizes that she can't hide from the, and she might as well accept them."... I'm not sure how far you are in the Archive, I don't know if you've read WoR yet or not, so spoilers below: That being said, I agree with you for the most part! She acknowledges her shortcomings and makes them... maybe not strengths, but less of a weakness. She is also very good at not placing the blame for her shortcomings on others, which is a lesson many of us can take from Shallan!
  4. Can't find it right now, but I'm pretty sure there is a WoB that mentions it is because of him and Kaladin both touching the blade at the same time. it is interesting that no other time does any character mention the concept of intelligible language in the scream of the Blades. Possibly Relis is able to make it out as it's being filtered through Kaladin and his bond I don't' think that Relis has potential to revive his blade though, at least not from the characterization that we've seen of him in the SA to date. The revival of a blade has come up in a few topics, most recently related to Adolin here Again, I can find the relevant WoB right now, but we know that revive those "dead" spren, is to spend a lot of time with the blade, talking to it, giving it back some knowledge of the world, and I just don't see Relis doing that.
  5. WoB basically it involves mental perception of one's self.
  6. @killersquirrel - I like the direction of your thought, but that is a "yes and no" to me. Ever try to sell a diamond? you're lucky to recoup 10% of the purchase price, because the perception of diamond's scarcity is not equivalent to the reality. Even with the tightly controlled supplies, there is never a shortage of diamonds. Atium OTOH doesn't suffer from that issue... it really is as scarce (on the market) as it seems to be so you should be able to demand full or inflated prices for your little nugget of Atium if you are going to sell it, though finding buyers may be tough.
  7. Hmm, tough call. I'd have to say either Dalinar or Jasnah Dalinar because he is such a BA warrior who is really trying hard to do all the right stuff. Jasnah because she is smart, grounded, and willing to go against the grain to do what she thinks is right. I like Adolin too. That being said, each time Kaladin speaks a new Ideal and the glyphs burst frosty air around him, I get all emotional because it means he's finally getting it, and he is doing that which I would do if I somehow possessed magical powers, protect those who can't protect themselves. Honorable mention, Zahael. I loved him in his first book, definitely my favorite from there.
  8. I think a relevant WoB is that the way the Shards shattered isn't how they had to shatter either, so just because there is an Odium, doesnt' mean there is a Lovium
  9. I'm not suggesting that a House would horde Atium at all. I just don't think they would sell it to other Great Houses or even lesser houses in most circumstances. I'd think that they would get letters of credit from the Empire itself vs. their verified by an Obligator store of Atium which they would then use to transact business and give up the Atium to the Steel Ministry rather than a rival house. Or even simpler would just be to sell it directly to the Steel Ministry to get the gold. It serves their purpose of having large amounts of money on hand to invest, it also serves TLR's purpose of reducing the available supply and therefore drives supply down even further. He'd have been foolish to have have this practice in place. I understand economics and opportunity costs and money making money. But giving your enemies or even opponents a potential weapon like that is foolhardy to me. TLR not buying Atium for gold back from Houses or doing some credit scheme would have been also to me.
  10. Sorry I think I did miss a part of the main point, but thanks for the upvote i would say that we have an interesting real world semi-parallel right now between Great House Atium Boycott 2014 and how effective it would actually be, with the mass protests in Hong Kong right now. The "people" are trying to passively resist and finding that they really have no leverage at all. I suspect that the Great Houses would quickly discover that their Atium boycott would lead to naught for them vis-à-vis the Final Empire in a similar vein. @outis - if you are a powerful solvent House with other resources, why in the world would you even consider trading Atium to a Rival Great House? That's like sacrificing your Queen near your opening gambit in Chess almost (ok not exactly, but you get the idea).
  11. This, to me, is a perfect summation of Adolin and his character to date. Take an Upvote! You're very right about his perceptiveness, he has feelings about people and he hasn't shown himself wrong yet.
  12. it's cool that you try though.
  13. I think the division of the arts came before the development of the fully covered Safehand. I like the groom's notion (or someone's) that most of the feminine arts have to do with relaxing and sitting while the masculine ones are all active and out and about.
  14. Pretty sure everyone wants to know that. Are you in Salt Lake and able to check out at BYU? I tried to do an interlibrary loan and couldn't get it done where I live.
  15. On the Truthwatcher/Edgedancer swap, I would say this: we know the Ars Arcanum are in world creations by a group of Worldhoppers. These people are not all knowing, so there can be mistakes made. Especially given that they are putting together a table of associations from groups who haven't been around for hundreds to thousands of years, and those that came after actively changed the histories to reflect better upon themselves... so getting at the "truth" of the associations 100% accurate is going to be nearly impossible. I agree they are swapped, and I think that is an on purpose in world "mistake" on Brandon's part to help confuse us the readers and our knowledge for time being. it could just be that the Herald and associative KR order is swapped on the chart but the rest are in the correct order too. I mentioned in the Adolin thread. The comet spren could go either way for me between Skybreakers and Dustbringers thematically. Both have division which I associate with the breaking and dust bringing of the two orders and is very appropriate for a meteor hitting ground. it will probably end up being a Highspren (Skybreaker) and therefore, Eshonai is probably going to end up being a Skybreaker if she does become a Radiant given the one floating around her. I like the idea of Dustbringer spren related to flamespren. I wonder if all of them ultimately have an associative "base" spren as well? I would almost expect based on Surges alone that the base Spren for Tension/Cohesion would be something watery, but that doesn't fit Stonewards very well, even their essence is Talus, which is best described as "a slope of stone, either natural or man made"
  16. i think the word in your last sentence is the operative one. TLR "seemed" to depend on atium income. I seriously doubt that the money he made from Great House and to a lesser degree non-Great House purchases of Atium would have been anywhere near sufficient to fund the empire. Every time an Obligator observed a transaction or an agreement, they were paid. I'm sure most of this money ended up in the Empire's coffers. There were additionally taxes and other things. All nobles had to rent the skaa from TLR. I'm sure that generated the vast majority of his revenue right there. Also, it's an absolute empire where TLR holds all the cards. He has the Koloss, he has the Steel Inquisitors, by right of might alone he owns the entire labor force of Skaa. The economics of the Empire is really just a game that he lets the nobles play. He doesn't need it at all. The whole point is to give them something to fight over I think (in Atium as a resource).
  17. Just based thematically/visually, comets to me evoke Dustbringers a bit more than Skybreakers. It may just be semantics, but when a meteor/comet hits something, it usually vaporizes large parts of it and puts a large dust cloud into the sky... I know there is Skybreaker's ability to drop from the sky like a comet and vaporize things, but I can't get over the correlation between the dust cloud that erupts from a meteor strike and "bringing the dust". I think people focus on Eshonai's "adventurous" nature for exploration, look at the "adventrous" Willshapers and assume that since the only unspoken for orders are Dustbringers and Willshapers, she will be a Willshaper. Then they look at the Comet spren around her and assume that is a Willshaper spren. If she is going to break away from Stormform and become an actual KR, I'm going to argue based on the spren near her and my interpretation of the comet-like spren, she'll be a Dustbringer. OTOH, Brandon could be throwing us all for a loop with the whole Szeth joining the "skybreakers" thing. Maybe Eshonai breaks from stormform as a result of her fall to the Chasm bottom, and in book 3 we see her take her place as the rightful first Skybreaker (hence comet spren), and Szeth is just a red herring.
  18. Well, remember, they did have a mother too... you know, ol' what's her name? Shshshsh I'm thinking here. Anyway, they had a mother. Since the spren themselves are actually mixes of Honor and Cultivation in different proportions, is it a surprise that someone like Dalinar, who has become so honorable, could have sons who are more like their mother in temperament/inclinations than he? Side note, I'm glad that Dalinar and Navani didn't get together initially. Otherwise we wouldn't have Jasnah, Adolin, and Renarin and we'd possibly be short 2 or 3 KR when the stuff hit the proverbial fan here. I'm inclined to think that the way a spren appears to coalesce has something to do with one or more of it's surges. Since we know that surges and their spren are related at least a little bit and that vine like spren are progression related (at least for Edgedancers), I kind of doubt that Adolin's Blade is a Dustbringer Blade. Though there is hope as you say, vine's could just be associated with more of the Cultivation side... @Moogle - I always thought Ivory disappearing like that had to do with Spren's ability to "not let people see them" if they didn't want to (unless your name is Rock. I guess Ivory could teleport as his mode of transportation being an Elsecaller spren, like Syl flies through the air...
  19. He is indeed a fascinating character. I would agree with you both a little bit about Szeth's nature. His free will was removed insofar as he is deemed Truthless, the moment that it is revealed that he should not have been punished in such a way however (Kaladin's surgebinding), Szeth's mind snaps, because the reality is that he isn't Truthless despite being named so by Shin society. If he is not Truthless, then he is in fact guilty of his crimes. The Shin leadership are culpable as well, just as cult leader would be charged with the murders committed by his/her followers (Manson I'm looking at you), but they didn't actually commit the crimes that Szeth does. Another interesting question about culpability that we see regarding Szeth, he is very obviously mad/crazy/out of his gourd in his scene with Taravangian as well as the final battles with Dalinar and the Alethi. Is he responsible for his crimes while mad? Not fit to stand trial (by anyone's standards)? He seems to regain sanity at the end, and allows Kaladin to kill him, to end his own threat and his mental suffering. Nalan's "saving" of Szeth just seems cruel at this point in his narrative.
  20. You can also find the sample chapter on Tor.com today: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/09/brandon-sanderson-stormlight-archive-book-3-first-chapter That way you don't have to worry bout the newsletter!
  21. We could do variations on the "I survived from the different races. That could be the normal human one, there could a koloss picture on one that is "Human survive Upping. Got Human... and t-shirt" or soemthing like that as a variant. If hoodies were available, I'd buy that first, but if not, then I'd probably pick up decals (car bumper) and a t-shirt. I'm not into lanyards personally. Maybe a metal water bottle.
  22. I love hoodies, preferably zip up for ease. Wear them all the time, where I love it's usualky cool/cold in the am and evening so you always have one in the car. I have probably 10 sweatshirts/hoodies.
  23. All the normal kitsch for me anyway, t-shirts, hoodies (it's in the name after all), maybe a sticker for the car?
  24. It is interesting that the Knight Radiant in that vision didn't start glowing with stormlight until the Thunderclast appeared. I wonder if she was perfectly holding it in until then or if something else is going on there? Maybe she was chewing some food to make some
  25. I'd buy stuff I think it's a great idea, especially to identify other Sharder's at signing etc.
