This did not read like the last book of an era.[Discuss]
SpinningSky replied to Oltux72's topic in Mistborn
I wil join this choir. I also left the book feeling a bit underwhelmed somehow. I'm trying to put my hand on why specifically (read it full-immersion yesterday). As I digest the story, I'm writing down some plotpints that I feel played a part in how I feel about the book right now, I'm very curious to hear counter points to these: - Telsin did basically nothing after buing built up like kind of a mastermind and the Set wasn't very effective On the topic of the Set: so was it the Major was overseen launch tests? wasn't that Telsin's plan? didn't he prepare the welcome party for Autonomy instead? I'm confused. I think in general there was a disconnect between the feeling that the Set was this big hierarchal organization, and the uncovering the lid to see confused people with confused goals moving randomly. Not saying it's bad per se, it seems tied to Autonomy's MO, but I felt a disconnect. What felt like the villains of the book where the two copy-cats, which made little sense motivation-wise to me, but it might be a plot point on autonomy's "creed" left open for future books? - Autonomy, while exciting to finally see on screen, was silly. I guess it was acknoloedgled in story hat Autonomy doesn't make much sense, but really, you moved all of your troops to take advantage of the perpedicularity and take over a plan with a double-shard, and the whole plan gets screwed by some allomancers slurping up the perpedicularity? not a great plan. Also, can we now just assume perpedicularities are this easily closed? Points for letting autonomy's army stuck in a perpendicularity-powered slow bubble for god knows how long - the whole "breed an allomancer" community program was very cool and made sense, but I feel like it has no interactions with the main plot of the book besides misidirection with the apocalypse videos and being close, by "coincidence", to the perpedicularity, maybe this should have been in BoM. I think the best thing this plot point does is leading to Kelsier being unsure on how he feels about it and the end. - The whole Ghostbloods plot was super fun, but basically a secret history on its own winded together with the book's plot in my opinion. I think it doesn't work as well for book that's so fast paced and shuld be closing an era. - I don't feel like we saw on screen much of the resolution of the political tensions between cities, let alone the south, which was the major conflict left by the prev book and started by this one. I wonder if the book would have felt more complete if it was focused on Wax\Wayne and Steris storylines, leaving the Ghostbloods to a secret history type book where we find out how they stopped Autonomy having just hints in the main book, much like the first SH. This could given more space to Autonomy herself to be developped. - The ending seemed a bit contrived to me, couldn't they just sink the ship? that would have watered the three bombs at the same time if done correctly right? even if that's not the case, if wayne could basically stop time around him, couldn't he just like, do whatever he needed to and walk out? As a final thought, I liked the book don't get me wrong! but I guess I strongly agree with the title of this post, to me it felt more like a couple of indipendent novellas smashed together, which these books kinda are, but then again this is the ending for a 4-books series. I also think the slow build up of Sazed's 'corruption' is very well done and a good plot point set up for the next Era. -
[Discuss] Theory: Lift is the Nightwatcher's Bondsmith
SpinningSky replied to SpinningSky's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was gonna make an update post when I had more new things to add, but I did notice rereading Edgedancer that there is a throw away moment where lift speaks to an urchin in an unintelligible language Edgedancer ch. 6 This easily goes overlooked, but it can be seen as Lift using the power of Connection to talk to the urchin, much like Dalinar does in Oathbringer (beginning ch. 65) when he spoke in Azish Well I would think if any Cultivationspren would be fine sharing a bond with the Nightwatcher, especially if she's kind of not there- 14 replies

While the concept of Rysn sounds like an amazing amazing charachter, I never really liked her, I was honestly a bit underwhelmed when I found out Dawnshards was gonna be about her, and the feeling remained after reading it, so yeah, I'm with you We should do a kickstarter to print out all of the WoBs to help you join the discourse on most theories I guess

I kinda expect most people to be Truthwatchers (such as myself), just cause skybreakers and windrunners will generally have, like, sports as hobbies, not reading the Cosmere If you look at the answers now, you see mostly academic orders, and I noticed this as I had my own friends take it (people who liked to read tended towards academic orders, people who didn't much less, which is very neat I think). The big outlier is Windrunners, and I kinda think people might get swayed towards windrunners for the same reason people will tend to be gryffindor in the HP houses test, this is on average of course

My understanding is that Savantism for a Tineye works twofold: 1) your body becomes incredibly more efficient at using tin 2) your body becomes addicted to tin and when you're not burning it, sensibilty would be much lower than that of a normal person So if you take the abilty to burn tin away, you're left with the second part and nothing else, I guess I wouldn't reccomend it

I thought Hoid got lightweaving when we saw it in the books, so like, later than Shallan for instance? I really like this, it makes a ot of sense, I also thought of them as crystals but we've always been said, "there's something about metals", so, yeah, it's probably not much in the ways of plot, but you're probably right! good call! btw dragonsteel -> steel of Dragon -> Wheel of Time universe is connected to Cosmere (havn't read the whole series I just know Dragon is thing in it from the first book)
-
Bonds and Connections are such a wide concept in SA and the Cosmere at large, I feel like there are plenty of bond types and the details and semantics of it will depend on many factors, and I see them more gradually different rather than being in distinct categories. For instance you're saying a radiant bond is a bond with any type of sentient creature, but I would hardly consider the bond of a Rhyshadium and one of a 5th level Radiant the same thing, especially when you start having three very distinct Bondsmiths manipulating bonds as they wish. For instance the Naheel bond starts from Spren trying to imitate what the Honorblades were doing, so you could consider the bond with maya, and with any dead shardblade, just a "dormient" Radiant bond.

For the sake or argument, I think Lopen does "protect" people by keeping up their morale and helping them feel good, but he is a odd fellow which not everybody will like. I can see him having to accept that his ways of cheering people up and keeping up morale won't work with everybody, and he will sometimes need to adapt his ways. Actually that'd be a huge character step for him, harder than for Kaladin to accept he can't protect everybody "well, you know, sometimes you just gotta shut up and sit with people" - Lopen - knight radiant of the 4th ideal

Could an Animal form a nahel bind and become a surgebinder?
SpinningSky replied to SteelBagel's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think in the cosmere in general the capability to manipulate\hold investiture and intent are strongly related (the power escalation from Honorblades\Radiants\Nightblood being my go to example). So my interpretation is that for instance horses, which are smarter than other animals but still don't have articulated and clear intents a human would, can have nahel bonds making them Ryshadiums which are bigger, stronger, smarter. Chasmfiends can get as big as they do thanks to such bonds as well, but it just affects their size. I don't think spirit webs of aninmals were ever talked about in the Cosmere, which would probably give us a better insight into this. The way I see it, but it's just a guess, a plant might very well form a "Naheel bond", but it would make sense to me that if a plant was able to grow gemhearts like a chasmfiend, it could also become very big, possibly have some smarter than normally possible vines around it. -
Any Italians on the Shard? (and, no Brandon in Italy)
SpinningSky replied to SpinningSky's topic in General Discussion
Even sadder, the one person in my group of friends who likes to read and got into Sanderson... lives in Spain... Such lonelyness wow I was not aware of that whole mess. Honestly given how the translated the word "Stormlight" in italian (folgoluce) it's probably for the best if they don't translate them -
I guess you would wanna start with known greatshells Tai-na, the Reshi islands greatshells, I think have a nice connection with Edgedancers. Lift aside, they slide around and literally give life entire villages. I do not know how to place the Marabethia deep see greatshells
-
Ciao! I'm curious if there are any other Italians here on the Shard. In my experience, never met anybody who knows who Brandon is around here (unless I'm the one who told them about it) You can hardly find his books in bookstores actually, I kinda look for them as a challenge when I get a chance to walk around a book store. So any italians out there? Is the situation similiar in other countries?
-
My head canon would be most major creatures are born as companions to their respective order, so a dustbringer might get like, a chasmfiend, skybreaker a larkin, but again no evidence for it I just wish that was the case It should be canon that horses came with the pesky voidbringers from Raise, so it's more likely that simply horses of important radiants became squires of sorts

I must say I really don't see the parallel the piece is quite cool, but to me it sounds more like... Wit screwing around with people, or maybe a scene panning over several bridge four members spending time during an evening, with the Lopen screwing around, then Teft having sad flashbacks and such As a general reccomandation for everybody, if you're into film scores, I can't reccomend enough this youtube channel : Sideways He talks a lot about leitmotifs, which I think would be super important for a Cosmere story to hold the whole thing together
-
Staying in Brandon's world, I kinda feel like SA lends itself better to a 5v5 kidna game, just because you get a larger skillset to implement different characters and their abilities. Also, I feel that feurochemy wouldn't really make for a fun game when you have to store up abilities Personally my dream Mistborn game is, basically, a reiplementation of the Insomniac Spiderman games, the mechancs are really almost identical. You're a mistborn, jump around, influence people while hiding or throw stuff at them, I guess the freedom and open world is the part I'd find most interesting in a Mistborn Game

I would be very curious to hear that! I would love to in general to hear ideas, both original and not, for soundtracks for different book moments. Of course I wish we could make it all original, but that's a bit challenging I'd like to see a montage of Taravangian waking up and writing the Diagram scored to "in the Hall of the Mountain King" Also, I don't know if people are aware of this, there is a soundtrack for SA by "The Black Piper" you can find on spotify (album name is "Kaladin")
-
Ah, I personally think it's a path to be threaded carefully, following ideas from books that is. They can be very inspiring sometimes (#Dalinar) but when it comes down to choosing between two real things, you're partial to the book's "opinions" because you like the stories and characters and whatever. LOTR is a great example, for me of course, of a story which I really like and am inspired by, but I fundamentally disagree with many of its underlying concepts. About Brandon, he's very openly religious so you can easily read about major points of the philosophy he really believes! He posted about it on his website as well.

that's a good point! it makes sense to assume that native Rosharians needa gemheart to bond spren Well actually this is not something I've ever thought of. But I'm confused, is there some canonic concept of Dragon in SA? like, I just think "important and big creatures on Roshar have a gemheart, and that's what allows them to be big and important" edit: of course I mean Dragon outside or Hoid's stories
-
Well for one thing Larkins are known to be original from Aimia, which is very distant, and have a whole history about them, I think the two species are as similiar as many other creatures on Roshar. Besides, Larkins' main feature is that they feed on investiture, which isn't a thing with chasmfiends. On the other side, I don't believe that Larkins have gemhearts, which chasmfiends do. But I don't consider myself an expert on the topic, I'm curious to see what others think As further food for thought on the topic of connections between rosharian creatues, I think that there might be something regarding the difference between greatshells\creatures with gemhearts and Ryshadium\Larkins creatures which exhibit spren-bond like traits, they mighty be tied to ancient radiants and fused. I like to think that 5th level radiants got a cool ride (after they got blade and armor), but I've got nothing to support it

[Discuss] Theory: Lift is the Nightwatcher's Bondsmith
SpinningSky replied to SpinningSky's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't think that's necessarily how to interpret it, I think she's a Bondsmith, and then some (backwards naheel bond, somethng with downshards?). So in my intepretation the Bonsmith part is the part of her powers that fits within a certain mechanic, but she's special beyond that. BTW I was re-reading Edgedancer, ran into a little tidbit I missed: Lift talks to a urchin in a language that Windle can't quite understand, when asked on why, Lift just says "Words is words". On Roshar that's a power associated with Bondsmiths. I think it's another nice detal that points at her being a Bondsmith- 14 replies

[Discuss] Theory: Lift is the Nightwatcher's Bondsmith
SpinningSky replied to SpinningSky's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thanks! I mean I agree we have an outline or her journey, we have that she met Hoid at some point, and I agree that she's is slowly aging, I feel that the outline we have is not enough (at least for me) to make theories without them just being wild guesses Actually, the fact that she asked because she wanted her mother to recognise her, is that canonised or your supposition? If it's in the books I forgot about it Do you have any theory on what her actually-slowly-aging might mean?- 14 replies
