There is never going to be a real sex scene.
-
watched it and it made my point for me: Astonishment in the first scene: who actually ghasps and widens their eyes??? thats soap opera level acting, it IS a cultural thing Japan is allmost allways over the top and that is something that can not be taken as serious as TWoK deserves. This needs to be made good with fitting actors, good special effects or not at all. Just look at eragon-granted not a very good book in the first place but as a 14 yo boy I quiet enjoyed it - the move destroyed the whole thing; Lord of the rings and Game of Thrones actually improved the books (blocking out most of Frodos bitching and whining). But I quess all of that is just a matter of taste.

I don't want to offend but in this instance I feel there is no way around it. Anime for basically any epic war fantasy is ridiculous. Anime is many things but never subtle be it the blatent sexuality, the over expressed emotions, overly dramatic plotdevices. Just imagine shallan, in a skimpy dress with DDs, blushing when she watches Kal go through a kata- I don't want to see that, besides a drawn army can simply not be awe inspiring - it's DRAWN. Just think about V for Vendetta. Game of thrones on the other hand seems to be made for that, a lot of politics, loads of "getting a load off" (pardon that cheap punn), and this kind of stuff, there doesn't need to be that awe-factor. And it IS overly dramatic and blatently sexual

I think the gentleman bastard series (lies of Locke Lamora,...)fitts the bill, it's the perfect kind of book to be narrated. This is largely because this series lives mainly on dialogue, jokes and yes such beautiful profanities, that "the goods are going to rust comets with glee".

Your 'Most perfect scene' from a book you've read
Galladon replied to Shardlet's topic in General Discussion
It's a hard choice but I tend to like the classical emotional peaks: Mistborn: first sentence third book (part1) - got me on every reread, I just allways hear sazed's voice proclaiming himself the hero of ages with a profound sadness. I know it's not a scene but anyway. WoK: Dialog between Syl and Kal before the last charge to save Dalinar and his men. WoT/Eye of the world: Moraine giving the speech reminding the edmonds field folk of their legacy. Tigana: The scene right after the climax where so much was in the balance and so much was lost. And credit where credit is due: "you are a wizzard Harry" which lead me into this genre and made me feel in awe (ok I was 8 but still). -
I just finished Tigana by Guy G Kay which I found quiet intriguing. I tried G.R.R. Martin but had to stop at book 2 due to extreme dissatisfation, I mean can anyone plan anyworse than this guy??? It's more like a soap-opera where you have to periodically kill off charackters, so you don't loose control...(But thats just me- had to bit.. about it since I wasted so much time on it). And of course severaly amusing Pratchetts in between. Anyone know which other GG Kay books are worth reading?

Stormlight retention as a function of gem size
Galladon replied to Kurkistan's topic in Stormlight Archive
Physics Yaaay I think there are two ways storing energy in gems (with modified physiks) and we want to combine them into something that is close to a laser but has some major attribute changes. This is based on the assumption that stormlight is very close in its behavior to actual light. 1: Hyperreflexive storage: Conditions:-Infusion state must be extremly short 10^(-xx)s or metaphysical - Hyperreflexive by extremly high refraktive index - beyond physically known (extremly slow Stormlight-speed n=c/c(matter); n(glass)=1.5; needed faktor maybe 10000 honestly don't know- could calculate but don't want to(-: ) or other means. Capacity: proportional to the critical Thermic-energy output(J/s) of Stormlightinteraktion within the medium Storage: Surface*Power*Duration*(k)coefficient- m^2;*J/s*s*k/m^2 Leakage: proportional to the Surface 2:Electron stimulation storage: Conditions: - Super-stable gem-specific Energy levels( The longer the better - normal: couple of ns in lasers-or so, would have to look it up- couple of seconds would be awesome) -non excitability: under those conditions Electrons would be highly susceptible to stimulated emission - we dont want that. Capacity: proportional to total number of excitable electrons n (n* delta E) Storage: logistical growth of stored energy (eg:90% very fast last 10% very slow) Leakage(emission): proportional to Volume Those are the two parts. First the light is infused( Elektrons get excitedand light is trapped within(high refractive index) ) so we have an added capacity. The electrons are the stable element (if one emmits a photon another excites it again) the reflection is sort of a buffer and is ultimately responsible for the leakage. For it all to work time dimensions have to be changed drastically(but it's magic anyway In conclusion I'd say The leakage is a Function that is exponentially falling at a very slow rate (faster rate until total energy=Capacity of excitable electrons, then slower drop) and is tied thightly to surfacearea. This would be supported by the fact that cut gemstones hold stormlight better (can't find the quote)- uncut means enlarged surfacearea due to the microscopic structure which also inhibits the reflection. I hope someone reads this- I am so proud -
I'm sorry for posting again but I think I didn't get my point across: 1: Etymology of percent: Italien merchents, accoutants, etc adepted it from the latin expression and thereby estabished it as the common method to compare figures, it later got meaning in statistics. This means common use of this term is clearly bound to italien merchants, which in turn means the origin is directly tied to our society. It is as if the doctors in the mistborn world would also use mmHg as the unit for pressure, or meters for length. 2: I wrote the very thing and counter argument here: I really like the idea that it was supposed to be the combination of two important numbers 10 and 16, since this leaves only on logical dinominator : 100 (16/10 =haha; 16/1000 too few). But I'm still not entirely happy with percent instead of 16 of 100 (due to it's etymology). edit: To Phantom : you're right it would cut their numbers by about 2.5 which means again that you're right that 16/100 is the only sensible option. I know I'm obsessing too much, but it's been nagging on me for quiet some time.

Concerning the length of delinars appearance: It might just be that Sanderson wants to increase the anticipation of either his death or survival by making a comment on this.
-
Well this much I know- I know he is human. The unnatural part is not percent but the exactness of the numbers (exactly 1 in 16 is equally ominous as 16%). I am more concerned about the author intend. Besides I think statisticians (nurden- don't know how to spell the scribes name) look to ratios first because if you want to find consistancies you'll never find them in percentages. Percent is simply something that has an extrem earth base etymology (origination 15-16 hundert from italien merchants). Sanderson is an author which I perceive as very maticulous in the planning of his world, so why use percent , it's like using 'Monday'. In extension to that why not switch from decimal to hexadecimal altogether in this world?? I don't want to antagonize, just looking for answeres . P.s.: sorry for my abismal use of ',' , english is not my native language.
-
My thoughts are those: 16/100 is a ratio which makes sense in the typcal decimal system but it looses all it's meaning if you were to convert it to e.g. the hexadecimal. 100 is a logical choice but only by human standards. My real question is : why not 1/16??? It makes much more sense (natural events are often based on ratios : eg. Genetics). percent is simply a random choice : ratios are almost law. I couldn't find any answeres yet I hope someone can help me out:

Circling back to the beginning: beeing taught to bond a spren: - consider there where around 2400 raidiance at any given point in time and say that each of them served 24 years that would mean that there had to be 100 KR replaced each year so 1 every 3and a half days. If it wasn't taught how do you suppose they organized all of that? - besides lets say that this would be the minimum force requiered to bearly survive a desolation so it's reasonable to assume that the "last desolation" would requiere even more especially without the herolds present. Also I don't think there is too much time left till the KR have to stand again. So I guess either "bound men" will pop up around the world by the hundreds or they will have to finde a way to teach or encourage bonding.

Well we know: - that they grow during pupation - that the chasmfiend of the hunt was one of the biggest ever seen - they have been hunting them since 5 years Thoughts inbetween: - They only could have just been sarting to grow to this extend otherwise larger ones would have been sighted at the beginning than towards the end - contradictory to this would be if the parshendi had been hunting them at large scale in the past ( I can't find the passage discribing the first encounter - there was something - I think) Conclusion: - likely that they, as honourspren bonding, only just began pupating shortly before -> if that is the case it would be directly connected to the comeing of the everstorm -> this making it likely for them to actually be the voidbringers - becoming sentioned beeings by pupating often enough and waiting (like syl becoming more manifest in the physical world and Kal becoming stronger - though they don't seem to be an imminant threat (populationwise) so it's not impossible for them to be the actual pre-stage of the voidbringers

reading-s? have I missed one (Parshendi-Viewpoint (toronto); the 3 parts of his writing the interlude-chapter about rysn (that her name?))? I don't think that they evolve from parshendi, with them beeing so obnoctious about their dead, I doubt they would kill them and cut out their gem-hearts. It's likely that this would have to be a species that is limited to the shattered plains, I don't think that we know of this species yet but it would be very much like Sanderson if he hid it 14 times in the book already . Do they maybe atrract more spren and absorbe Stormlight and rapidly expand their gemhearts?

How very "Elric of Melniboné", I like it. What if shardblades actually were of both (odium and honour), explaining why KR of old had no problems using them (used to protect sways blade towards honour) - and their spren (if this is how it worked); and now syl hates them since by beeing "forsaken" by the KR and their constant use for petty and spiteful reasons, they were swayed towards odium. This would explain why there is no possibility to recreate blades.

I've had a couple of ideas while reading this thread (sorry that it is a little of topic but it's no subject that hasn't been mentioned in this thread before (so, I don't feel that guilty): 1: Is the thrill necessaryly of odium? If hypothetically Alethcar is granted the thrill (and it's warriors doctrin) to create a nation that is skilled enough for the true desolation (as sanpping in Mistborn). 2: I think there is a base afinity towards surge-binding (Kals depressions when there are no highstorms) so maybe Kaladin is special. 3:Plate - Ability - intererance of Seth has nothing to do with Dalinar or Kals interactions with plate and ability (seths power is something differently gained) 4: this is baseless speculation but what if blades and plate are forged form Honour and Odium and have therefor an ambigous nature. So if they are in "good Company"(KR) they gain something and otherwise loose it. (Thought as it is a typcal theme (good and bad complimenting each other) it might have some merit). Dalinar's power: I think that he is , as so many before me have stated in that beginning stage where the powers start to manifest. (though I'm not sure if the KR actually could inteact with their spren - Kal beeing special; maybe). As to the time it took him to atract one- I think till shortly before Kals "bond" it was not possible -(there must have atleast been someone worthy, I mean it was thouthands of years is a long time) - something must have changed. Otherwise how do you suppose 2000 honourable men and women will arise in a couple of years that haven't done so in centuries. I'm sorry for the spelling and the structure (me beeing german one would expect better structure :lol:/> )

wow that would make the density on 1/5th of the lowest I have yet found making roughly 10 m³ of material availabel and with that in mind one wold only need a contraption on the end of the bridge to facilitate a handhold for all bridgemen to push it across. Under those circumstances it's possible to make a 300kg bridge no more problems with friction and so forth and didn't expect a 25% gravitational ascelleration reduktion which would mean the bridge would theoretically only "weigh" 225kg (this is a minimum-calculation). Changes a lot but still the question is this the best design, do you guys have better ideas of what sanderson had in mind?
-
sure and now run for couple of hours with that... I think my estimate is quite sound since have you ever tried to run with someone of about 45-50 kilos on your back? if so I bet you didn't do it for long. ANd if that doesn't convince you how do you suppose the sidecarry was done with only 5 members more? try carrieing something at your side... But even if you say 50 kilos this would only 25% more material (easy conversion : +10kg/pperson => 0.5m³ material) As to the slight arc I thought for calculation-purposes it's easier to just leave it be since it can't be a big arc: 1. Cavalry needs flat terrain to charge so lets say elivation of max 1 meter for every 10) 2. The higher the arc ; the more complex and heavy the structure underneith becomes but calculations only get you this far: If you have time and ideas please draw a bridge-spec and proove me wrong- I'm trying to do the same right now So here is a prelimenary "result", I have no CAD-Program at home so sorry for the quality of this...

Somewhere it is said that Adolins shardplate was inherited from his mothers side- I think- can't find it right now.
-
thats a good idea maybe I'll draw up some specks myself should be interesting. yeah it's early afternoon over here^^

I did those calculations to get the max.portable material which is 2m³ - give me some credit would I be able to do those calcs without knowing that a flat piece of wood is a stupid way to make a bridge?!!! The average thickness is just a way for everyone to visualize how mch material it actually is - I mean I cant exactly imagine what to do with 2m³ just by looking at the numbers so I broke it down to visualize. Besides we know it's flat and has only wooden support beams ( I think 3 ?!). I might not be a structural engineer but I am an engineer - so I know my physics(-: By the way Friction is not dependent on the area formula is: F(friction) = F(normal; in this case gravitationalforce)*Koefficient

Do the scouts really polejump? I allways thought they used those poles to lay it arcoss the chasm and then "climbe" to the other side. Besides how would that even work? Imean the chasms are way too deep to kind of "swing over" and you polejumping is mostly about height not distance. My main thought was allways how to eliminate friction (cause if you don't you'll never be able to push it across- or at least I don't see it) I had some interesting ideas concerning the bridges weight: -so here are some calulations(sorry they are metric; I will translate the solution): -jump.worldrecord: 9meters -lower gravity (on rochar) + s.plate = jumpdistance of 15m = max.chasmwidth -Bridge.length= 2*max.chasmwith (as seems the dominating opinion) -low density wood: 500kg/m³ -Bridge.width=3m (3 Bridgeman underneith) -max.carryweight(man) = 40Kg (low gravity) -max.Bridgeweight=25(min number of men)*40kg= 1ton -usage: Kavalary(500Kg horse, 100Kg Man, 100kg other)two abreast -Calc.: m³ of wood= max.Bridgeweight/density= 2m³ of material Bridge.thick= material/(length*wdith)= 2m³/75m²= 2.7cm = 1 inch = average possible thickness of bridge I mean I am no strucktural engineer but that seems to me like it wouldn't work. So lets assume that Shardplat is not that strong and dalinar could only jump with it 5m(6yards) this would leave us with 3inches there it becomes plausible to have a construction that could withstand a Cavalry charge, but it only leave enough space for max 13 people to push 1 ton over (frictionkoeficcient about 1.2). (bridge 2*5m) If we said we met in the middle at 15m(bridgelength; 50') that would leave us with say 2inches maybe enough with some VERY special wood but still the friction and comparetively less men to push would leve them unable to push it across.

Still I don't think that he is gonna do this for several reasons: 1. sounds too much like ice and fire 2. in an interview he said that the cast of mains is maybe getting extended by 1 so that would leave max 3 viewpoint chars. (dont't think thats what he has in mind) 3. You can't compare mistborn (plotting wise) to his other works, look at Elantris eg. 4. It would close a whole lot of doors (sanderson beeing an arcitectural writer and so forth, I think that if Dalinars death is happening we won't see it coming, by this logic Seth couldn't kill him) I mean honestly wouldn't you all be disappointed him Sanderson's plotting was that predictable Yes he has a tendecy to kill off chars., but always after they have done what they needed to. Dissagree on Sazed though- since he more or less absorbed the shards and became God - wouldn't call that death. I#m not opposed to dalinars death mind you, but I don't think it's time yet
