1. The thing is that sure under normal circumstances decreasing the density would be the only obvious way to decrease mass: Problem 1 changing density simply means altering the chemical composition (decreasing the atomic numbers) which wouldn't make sense, or thorwing out all the neutrons which would make it seriously unstable and only allows for a weight decrease of 49.9999...% (e-). So this means changing the mass withou toughing density: This can be achieved by either manipulating the local Higgs field (change the amplitude) or reducing the number of Higgs boson particles whithin the atomic structures. This seems like the most likely candidate for influencing mass.
2. This is just a nice obeservation: Brandon gives a nod to conservation of momentum (p) at the end of the book. As Wax remarks that he gains a burst of speed when starting to fill his metalmind while in motion. Basic Law is that the sum of all impulses within a system must remain the same from time t1 to time t2 (under ideal conditions). If we apply this to p=m1 (mass at t1) * v1 (velocity at t1) an say he decreases his mass m2 = 1/2* m1 then follows => that v2 =2 * v1. So very nice little integration of real world physics there Mr. Sanderson this is why I love your books
3. I'd join the ardents, just so I can adept my physical knowledge, whilest I note down all the mathematical definitions and physical formulae, my electrotechnical/ technical Informatics knowledge and find a way to Industrialize in a short period of time. For this I will go to the two ardents that discoverd flamespren beavior. After working out which is the fastest way to industrialize (should take about a year) find Sebariel get him to invest after showing him some prototypes (of whatever). Sell the book you compiled to Navani. Plan could look somewhat like this: 1: identify a resource rich environment 2: introduce steam powerd engines to become more efficient at mining, and build railways 3: Identify plants that are rich in oil and intoduce modern farming (steampowered plows etc.), use BioCHULLgas 4: use fuels to power crude large machines, like industrial arms factory, improve mining, etc. 5: find out if salpeter is available, based on this: concentrate on armor and arms and food, or on cannons Each step needs to be progressively improved, and has to be executed somewhat parallel. But that would be how I'd do it, I guess.
4. No in this case I skipped over the volume part integrating it in the relevant formulae. if you can direct it, it cant be bound to blood cells, because if you can direct it into a focus you have to move every bound SL_bloodcell to this point, at which point you either accelerate bloodflow through certain parts of your arterial system (you cannot widen beyond a certain poin -lets say 2*d) or you actually reverse flow (which is again not possible). chull to compressing parts of the stormlight, well no physical sytem works this way, and it seems way to taylored to explain away flaws in the theory- Arcom's razor. First off I'd say it's stored in the heart or general chest area, otherewise we would expect a much more drastic exhilation of SL while breathing, or it is actually stored in the tissue of the lungs. If you want to apply physical laws to it, it wouldn't be able to selectively saturate, it would naturally diffuse into the blood like oxygen, this is where we are devided: You say: lets store it in the lungs keep up a minimal buffer and give it the ability to be directed whereever. I say: if your theory were true you wouldn't be able to choose to which degree SL would follow which physical law. either you say you can control it, thereby eliminating the need for a theory at all or you say you can't control and the theory falls apart. I don't think BS would give SL physical limitations like binding it to the bloodflow and afterward completely ignore basic physics by say MAGIC. If you say Stormlight is seperate from the blood and simply uses the pathways in a metaphysical way, i can get behind it, but as soon as you bind it to the actual blood, you implicitly give it simily physical limitations as blood As to my approach : I say under normal physical laws (tweeked-as slightly as possible) SL would need to behave similrly to oxigen. So SL in-> SL stored -> pressure of stored SL diffuses it into bloodstream-> equal distribution. This is how I imagine this approach would have to look, and thereby showing that it is unfeasible due to several aforementioned physical impossiblities. 5* saturation is an arbitary number I dervived form the following: He feels it in his whole body but its proportionally much higher in his chest: Ice in body versus Storm in chest. if you set those in relation chest size /body size and ice / storm, this is a complete subjective thing: how much feels like a strom I said 5. His heart isn't faster, find 1 refferance where it seems like his heart goes at more than 200bpm an than mutiply it with lets say 150ml/beat then you get 30l/min and then I rounded it up to 50l/min. When you have an actual circulatiory system you can up this value to 200L/min and it still wouldn't work, unless you control it. Of course if you only have to transport one particle to a certain point in your cycle it works, but as I said before thats tayloring. As to the saturationkoeff, this I simply added for completeness and set it to 1 so it becomes irrelavent. It simply some place holder if more advanced theoried had come along, it stands for the differance in containers (here chest vs blood) as I convert one into the other. So I really don't like the idea of control since it's completely out of physical context. I think this is our most fundamental deiding line. I say since you can't control it like this it doesn't work because of... and you say I can control the SL flow so it works. and you are right in that case. Since I have done nothing but citicize all day, here is my counter theory based on yours, which you may feel free to criticize . SL is inhaled and stored in the lung issue and uses the bluudvassels as a cind of powergrid, an is not bound to blood. as in a powergid there is allways a slight current but the real draft is created as soon as you switch on an electrical device. so If you get a wound the SL will be used creating a hole that needs to be filled, which is a self regulating system with no need for exteriour control. The only control you have is to switch the light on and of (infusing lashing etc.).
5. Lets assume that 40L/min is the absolute maximum http://btc.montana.edu/olympics/physiology/pb01.html (as we have a decreased g(rochar) =0.7 *g; Kal is far from a olympian mainly because the only exercise he'd done within the last year was 1 month of sparsely carrying a bridge at a calory intake of 1000/d, stormlight compensates for the rest) You do know that I've made allof those calculations assuming that the heartrate is at 200 bpm? but lets take 50L/min throughput of the heart: this still means we are roughly 40s (assuming 5*resaturation of the entire blood). As we would need to pump roughly 30 L of blood past the point at which the target is. And this whole calculation doesn't even take into account that the aortic arch has 3 offshouts for example which means that with one circulation only a small portion of the blood has traveled by the hand infact I am not able to find numbers here. But this would roughly mean that at most 1/4 of the arterial throughput would reach the needed destination. I would estimate more like 1/8 to 1/12 of the throughput of 50L/min. (aorta ascend and descend ratio, etc you know better-edit) so in actuality we are pumping about 5L/min past the right hand (which is a VERY conservative estimate (i guess more like 1L/minute). Maybe you, seeming to be a MD or so, know how much blood is actually passed through the arteries in the hand (otherwise I will do the caluation (Bloodpressure -> estimated diameter of the combined arterial vessals=> amount of blod pumped past, but this would be very inacurate and tidious). edit: adding a small remark
6. thats profound . I wasn't sure about that, good thing you confirmed it, thanks.
7. First off let me correct an earlier stament of mine: the implicit statement that stormlight is stored in the lungs, which is as wrong as can be. BUT it is concentrated in the chest area. What this means is that a small portion is stored in the blood, while the rest is "kept" in the chest. What does this mean? 1. in order to depleat all of the stormlight you have an estimated time, that comprises the following aspects: blood speed =70 ml/beat* n beats/min = 70*n ml/min //on average tweeking those numbers doesn't gain us anything T circulation = 7liters / 70*n ml/min=> T=100/n min => at 100 beat/min it would take 1 min to pump it through, as an example. 2. the part that seemingly hasn't been understood, you have to resaturate the blood by a factor of k times V(total stormlight) = k* V(blood)*saturationkoeff //the storm rages in the chest 3. the total time: from no stormlight saturation to no stormlight saturation. Phase 1: t0 to t1 = time taken till total diffusion of the saturated arterial blood = T(circulation)/2= T01 Phase 2: t1 to t2 = time to continously resaturate the blood untill no more SL is left in the chest =(V(tot SL)-(V(blood)*saturationkoeff)/2) * 1/blood speed = T12 Phase 3: t2 to t3 = time taken to actually desaturate blood of the last cycle approaches 0 =T23 T(total)= T01+T12+T23 Calculating an example: Parameters: Blood pump volume= 70ml/beat Blood Volume = 7 l (ease of calculation) n= 200 (beats per minute) k=5 (Volume modificator, means inhaled 5* the amount neccessary to saturate the complete Volume of blood) saturationkoeff=1 (ease of calc) T(circulation)=7liters / 70*n ml/min=> T=100/n min =100/200 min =0.5 min T01=T(circulation)/2 = 15s T12=(V(tot SL)-(V(blood)*saturationkoeff)/2) * 1/blood speed = (k* V(blood)*saturationkoeff)-(V(blood)*saturationkoeff)/2) * 1/blood speed =((5*7l*1)-(7l*1/2))*1/(70*200 ml/min)=((35l)-(3.5l))*1/14 min/l = 2.25 min = 2 minutes and 15 s T23=0s T03 = 15s+ 2min 15 s +0s =2min 30s This is how long it would take to completely use the SL at a heartrate of 200 bpm (there has been no statement that his heart would race above that, which is something that would have been mentioned) If we remember the shield of book 1 which has been infused with all his stormlight in a manner of seconds (3-5s at most), the whole concept falls apart. As to the pressure, physically impossible ( water is too good an insulater and storage of heat as is the human body rapid changes in temp would be strongly dampened)
8. My problem with the Stormlight by blood idea is, that significant cut in book 2 This means that the blood would have had to be pumped through atleast once completely (about 1 min at 70bpm), besides that the stormlight is not absorbed at once. Lets say you can saturate your blood 3 times with a good deep breath of stormlight. At a heartrate of 210bpm it would have taken Kal a whole minute to heal and this isn't taking into account possible diffusion processes and looks at it as a linear system instead of exponetial decline (as has been stated in one of the books). edit : sorry but spoiler doesnt work, dont know why.
()
9. I say windrunners, because they seem like the hands on kinda groupe (large in number due to squires) and I have the feeling that soulcasting and devision might not easily be done on other KR. I know - the blood of Shallan was soulcast, but still something gives me the feeling that there might be limitations, eg. Syl defending Kal in Shadesmare, etc.. otherwise it really would be an easy fight: gather stormlight -> get informants to locate enemies, while waiting in shadesmare-> travel to targets-> find the bead for that persons blood (or however)-> smile victoriously
10. I have taken to reading the hardback only once and afterwards listening to the audiobook. By the way listening to the audiobook and reading along, gives a whole new feel and increases your absorbtion rate tenfold. trying to limit my self to one read per quarter year. (so far it has been more of an monthy plan^^)
11. I like anger spren the most, since they show one of the most intese emotions in an undeniable way underlining extreme situations
12. exactly what I was thinking, arrrrwwwww If it's fractal related the dragon curve (really is it's name) seems like a good fit. but the vortex similarity is also a very strong, but is more loosly tied to math (in the obvious sense).
13. So can we all be sticks? Are we all stick equals in the eyes of the only true stick? Can we elevate ourselves - because I personally allways saw myself as more of a branch? How many shards does the mighty stick hold? What was there first the stick or the tree? We need the Book of the Stick! We need rules so we will not fall to the firebringers! All hail the stick, the only Stick. and praise his one Leave which he sacrificed for our salvation, and glory in his cognitive representation in the realm beyond. ALL HAIL THE STICK. (all religious refferences to real world religions are completely unitentional...; but seriously I hope I don't offend)
14. One of his goto things is to make up a particular sware word/sentance and then letting this charackter sware almost exclusivly with this one. (normally there is more diversity in swaring - I guess) I actually like it because it keeps him making up very creative ways to curse.
15. Did I miss something about Zahel - is he vasher?? I have to admit it's hard to keep track at the moment. Back to topic: I'd have to agree with Observer, that finely honed (is this how you write that- I guess so) skill is at work here. But I think it's still possible, because that's allways the thing you're just innocently reading along and then... AAAAAWSOME....
16. I love that there is already a coopermind entry for it. I like to split it: Character I like to follow most closely: Kaladin funniest character: close call between Syl, Rock, Lopen, Wit, Shallan; but then again how can you compete with the Lopen Most heoric and favourite character: Dalinar, you just know there isn't anything that guy can't take (not physically -though I would be interested now), and by saying this out lod I probably yinx-killed him. I'm soooooorrrryyy. Character I'd miss the most: Syl- without a doubt any other could be killed off except her ( I'd be sad for any of the others, but with her I'd probably stop reading- ok I woundn't, but still)
17. There is a simple explanation, which Kurkistan already cut into: It's stated nowhere how many lashings are beein used, infact it would need quiet a lot to cause this directional change (need for decelleration from about 300km/h (final velocity- on earth about 400 km/h) to 0 in quiet lets say 3 seconds=> a=v/t =300/3.6 m/s *1/ 3s = 28m/s² so about 4 lashings (if g=7m/s²)). So if he lashed once for directional change and 4 times for decelleration it would work. Now the lurch: Any da/dt (change in acceleration) feels like a lurch, just like driving over a big bump at high speeds, only that 4*the normal gravity might actually feel like a rope. Keep in mind that 3 seconds is a very conservative estimate, if it's only 1s it would be 12*g(rocharen g). It could actually feel more like running into a wall.
18. So I came here to discuss some inconsitancies and what do I find a have finished physics discussion- YAY. There is a simple thought experiment to do here: If two equally strong (but with different masses) Allumancers lay on their backs and pushed up a metal block (equal masses) - what will happen. P1:= person with m1=2*m2 P2:= person with m2 Theory 1: mass effects the strength of the push: -expected result: P1 pushes higher than p2 -possible explanation: the allunmantic force factors in mass: eg. F= Constant*(1/4*pi)*(Reaktivity*Strength*mass)/r² Reaktivity: how well a certain metal responds to the exurdet allumantic Strength This is how something like this could look like. Result: you have an virtually infinite mass behind you (planet) => virtually infinate force (of course not infinate- but close enough for our cause) Theory 2: mass only effects your movement not your allumantic force -expected result: P1 pushes as high as P2 -possible explanation: eg. F= Constant*(1/4*pi)*(Reaktivity*Strength)/r² Result: a very sensible system... Conclusion: you cannot factor in mass (in a sensible way), because you get all kind of weird stuff as soon as you lay on your back (I know that this sentence will make any scientist cringe but it simply illustrates the point I'm trying to make). Therefore mass is only relevant for equation of motion. To explain why someone with higher masis a better anchor for force: 2 similar cars play tug rope one has summer tires the other has winter tires. Friction is the analogue to inertia. So here are my questions: how do you think this allumantic force works (which force is it similar in build to - I chose electric force)? Is the whole body effected or only the chest (blue lines)?
19. I normally never listen to music when I read but on my reread I was at my girlfriends and her radioalarm went off and I started reading (reread). I right about there when Dalinar started fighting with Szeth when I kidd you not "I need a hero"(bonnie tyler) started playing on the radio.... That must have been the single most perfect coincidence of my life. (i'm from Germany - we still have radio stations that play music from 80s - now. In case you were wondering
20. please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Kal form a shield in his last fight in addition to his Syl-powered weapon? This would suggest to me, that such armor would be equally summoned (as simply an extention of the bond), like growing stormlight carapace (don't know how to write that word). It would certainly speak agains it beeing a fabrial. I wonder ful Kal hear screaming if he touched a fabrial - it beeing a spren-enslaving device? On that not did Shallan reach the final 'level' and if so did she use a fabrial after finding and speaking truth?- just as a side note.
21. I love things like that. Brandon didn't use either the european time day/month/year or the american month/day/year. He flipped it around sorted it in the most logical way and there -he's done.
22. Well everybody saw both possibilities coming, and since brandon likes to turn predictions upside down (in this case he could have easily used the next 2 books for some extravagant Kla-spren-bonding-quest or really anything like that), so the only thing is to extrapolate the possibilities and weigh them, which as the hundreds of discussions on this platform have showen is REALLY hard.(I know it sounds personal but it really isn't meant that way-sorry). Well that beeing said I think I would have thrown the book out of the window if Syl had really died.
23. It would be fun to build response taktics to certain events. -grand assault (voidbringers+ thunderclast in large numbers)/ orders+normal soldiers -small numbers of voidbringers /all over the country -supplyline protection so eg. tactic for supply: get a ligthweaver to mask thier progress so along those lines
24. I think there is already a thread on SA/anime. First off while I think SA provides excellent TV/movie material, I must say that I think that the chances of a good televising (in whiche ever form) are less than Syl having afternoon tea with Odium. I say this because though special effects are constantly improving and the cost of animation (not anime) has been 'adjusted', I think there is no possibility of such a Project getting the backing it needs and deserves. That beeing said, I don't think this should be discussed at all here (because it beeing 'duh-hh'), so how would I want it done I mone wasn't an issue and I could have anyone I wanted? Let's see: -definately TV-show (or a 6-part movie for each book (: ) -Cast: well for me there are only 2 truely difficult choices Dalinar:- (50 something (1123-now) by the way not 40 ) I allways thought Clive Owen (the less pretty version of J. Dean) might be a close fit if you give him 5-8 years to age. He seems blunt enough Kaladin: Avan whatever seems like a good choice if you wanted Kal to look like he acts - a whiny little b... ( Sorry Kal I like you, but this pun had to be done). We need more Rambodin and less Ram-blondy. Though I have to admit I haven't found the right face yet In regard to the other 2 proposals: Shallan: maybe something like this (but finding a cute redhaired actress shouldn't be too hard)-Jane Levy Jasnah: She is neither cute nor young, so I think Meghan Markle is definately out. But again haven't found the right mix between dignity elegance and arrogance either.
25. What a glorious moment this was, there I thought oh boy another book with this slimy e... but no wait what .. did he really just do this .... jaaaaayy. With Sades still in the game there would have been too many factions moving against Dalinar, soo Adolin decided that he would be the much needed fist. The fact that he hid this is all well and right, since when you try to convince others to be more honorable, knifing them in the eye isn't the way to go. I think it couln't have happend any better way (ok maybe they could have called the KARKEN oh no wait a slimy thing with 16 legs).
