Favorite Fight Scenes in Stormlight Archive.
DoctaDajman replied to Lord Ruler Sylphrena's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This isn't an option and it makes me sad... I realize it is less of a fight scene and more a friendly or not so friendly sparring session... Kal vs Vasher It wins automatically because I get to read about how hectic it is to fight against an awakener not knowing about the magic system. PoV seeing magic for the first time not knowing it is magic is epic and underrated. That fight is the winner hands down. -
Let me rep the Warbreaker crowd!

I haven't. I need to. Thanks.

A lifeless in armor, and I did specify some light armoring for the dogs, is a total menace. They feel no pain and until completely bled out of their ichor alcohol or shattered to the point of not having any mobility, they will continue their attempts to follow commands. We know that awakened ropes have been used as siege weapons slinging massive rocks. This will be on a smaller scale. We also see awakened objects catch arrows which requires more timing and accuracy than 99.9999% of humans would ever be capable of... for that reason I dont think that having a rope sling a projectile from a moving animal to a moving target would be as impossible as you make it sound. Despite what it may look like in chopping competitions and forged in fire... awakened ropes are not being held taught nor are they set against a solid cutting board background to chop through. I dont think the average foot soldier would be able to effortlessly cut through ropes in a struggle. You still have a densely packed 200lb ACL tearing machine running at you somewhere in the range of 25-30mph slinging lead and a rope with minds of their own set on taking you out. They probably weigh more with armor on as well. This is absolutely not an easy thing to escape from. Your only hope is survive the slinging lead, bypass the ropes, destroy enough legs to stop the dog from running, and then leg it before being grabbed and pulled in to the animal.

I was asking about an aetherbound. I know it's all speculation at this point but I can't help thinking of a cosmere version of a non shifting based druid. All of those cool nature spells from D&D... Shillelagh, only its grown directly into your hand. Thorn Whip, but the ability to choose yes or no to the thorns. Barkskin, only you can choose where to grow it and how much. The list goes on... if you could replicate other plants then perhaps you could even grow portions of carnivorous or poisonous plants as well. Imagine slapping someone with a supercharged stinging nettle vine you grew out. I'm probably pushing it way too far but if this existed in the cosmere I would love it. If I am missing it please point me in the right direction.

This is something that has fascinated me for a while. But it makes me wonder. You say allow but I am skeptical by how much a shard can do... Harmony could not do anything to Bleeder without her having 2 spikes. Then he had all control minus her decision to log out of her own life. If a shard could simply remove and sever their bond why would they not do it? Rool of cool is to blame if the ability is there and explains them not doing it. However bleeder makes me wonder if that is even possible for them. So I tend to think that the only entity making this choice would have to be the Aether. In which case I dont see why they wouldn't. They definately seem like they need the water more than simply wanting it. My head cannon has always been that if an aether could find a bendalloy compounder they would be lining up for it. It's like an endless supply for an addict. Although then I wonder, and this risks getting really off topic, what about healing? Why wouldn't an aether set up camp on Roshar and bond to every radiant they can? You get dehydrated, breath in a bit of stormlight and heal from it. Perhaps they have tried and the issue there is that the spren dislike the bond (like spren don't really dig hemalurgy). An Aether tries to set up shop with a radiant and the radiants spren breaks their bond and no more healing anyways. I do imagine Miles would have been a good choice for a bond though. He could continue to heal through the dehydration right? In TLM Wayne makes a comment to Not Wayne about being strangled and how fast it burns through healing stores (it continues to require more and more healing until you breath again). But one of the names for a gold ferring is bloodmaker. Wouldn't dehydration be solved instantly by making more parts of the blood? It's not like you keep using gold stores until you start drinking again... or at least it won't have nearly the same affect as strangulation I dont think. Anyways. Back on topic, if a shard like Harmony is incapable of smiting and removing your power directly, then a gold or bendalloy compounder would be such an ideal person to bond for an Aether. (Or even a spore eater who can fuel that spore for decades with enough metal).

I know that there are some pretty fantastical powers in the cosmere, but I always want to give a shout out to awakening when I can... because it is awesome. This mornings shower thought had me thinking of the use of Mastiffs through history as wardogs. Large and strong. Historical claims of being armored and sent into the thick of battles. A nearly 200lb dog that is set on destroying you is a terrifying thought. I imagine some obedience training from puppy to adulthood would be helpful as they should understand the commands to an extent. But even the best trained dogs can go off script... But how much more terrifying if they are lifeless? Perfectly obedient. They feel no pain and have to have their ability to move destroyed to stop them. A lifeless 200lb dog is terrifying. What if you up it beyond that. An awakened sling with a pouch of lead projectiles harnessed on the back of the lifeless. A large rope awakened to grapple anything the dog is attacking. Why not both? I believe I read once that the dogs would be sent at a group of enemies while the archers would shoot at the same group forcing a conundrum upon the enemy forces. Use your shields to stop the wave of dogs or the wave of arrows. Now your wave of dogs is also sending volleys of lead projectiles and once they hit your front line their awakened ropes will start entangling and wrestling weapons and shields away from your fighters. Perhaps it is a colossal waste of breaths when talking large scale and the dogs could break a leg or something more irreparable. Maybe it is a better thought in more modern days. A law enforcement k9 that will never disobey, will never grow tired, and can still function for whatever task you give it? Armed with ropes awakened to restrain resisting persons. The officer never has to put himself in danger. Anyways. Shower rant over.

Is Verdant Aether strictly vines or do you think they can grow different types of plants? I think of vines and I think of how many different vines are out there. Some are thick, some are thin, some are long, some are stubby. Some have a decent outer layer of bark and some have sharp thorns. I think of other plants and the varieties found there as well. It makes me curious though... Do you think a verdant aetherbound could grow specific parts of plants? Could they grow a thicker bark like carapace? How much control do you suspect they have over the vines? Could they use them like awakened ropes to grow and grab things? Could they make them move back on themselves / retract in a way to pull themselves inward towards the aetherbound after being grown?
-
Oh absolutely. I think electrum Allomancy all the time would probably be quite confusing... I think just seeing your possible deaths would be more useful to sift through. You die that way... go another way. And you don't have to have tens or hundreds of shadows popping up all the time.
-
My thoughts were not directly related to more breaths, rather that each breath would become larger and bigger. Thinking more along the lines of how I think copper compounding could potentially make the memories more vivid and easier to navigate. A 10x stronger breath compounded would allow someone with only the 5th or 6th heightening to gain benefits to the 9th heightening. Potentially. Not more breath but stronger breath.
-
I will start by saying that I dont believe nicrosil will ever be able to compound biochromatic breath. However... what if it simply took the breath that was in there and magnified its size... I imagine it being closer to potentially adding more heightening with less breaths. We see it with divine breath. 5th heightening with a single breath. 2000x more powerful than a single normal breath. So someone who has compounded enough could potentially unlock a higher heightening while still being limited in the amount of awakening they could do because they simply don't have the resources. If someone had a breath that was magnified to 10x what a normal one is would it result in a more lifelike lifeless?

I feel like awakening can do a ton that pseudo mimics magics found elsewhere in the cosmere. Nightblood talks to peoples minds which is awesome! Do you think a glass eye or a monocle to look through could be awakened to "show me my death"? This would function in my mind the same way that Aviar works. Basically a limited form of future sight that kicks in to show you where not to go or somehow warn of danger down the road. In my mind I would much rather awaken something like this to mimic atium but I imagine that it would need to be balanced out by the soulsucking powers similar to Nightblood for super obvious balancing reasons. However we have seen that a functional shardblade was created with awakening that doesn't try to consume it's users soul. So perhaps showing a person their own future... and narrowing it down to just their death or grave injury... could narrow it down enough to not be forced to constantly consume x amount of investiture from said user.

I think the trick to "what your thrown at" is going to be found in the visualization. You could make the visualization a combo of the physical features of the person getting wrapped up. Perhaps you could include whatever the lifesense feels like of the person as well. In the end you would be awakening the rope itself and not the weights. In the case of adding some golf balls or whatever for weights the bolas would have some bounce too. Perhaps even if they miss short they would bounce their way back towards the target? With the rope being awakened to pursue the person in your mind and who you are throwing it at... I mean a straw man went and stole keys. I bet bolas could identify who you are thinking. The coolest part about the weapon in my opinion is that it can potentially have a 6 foot wingspan and if any portion of that 6 feet hits the target the awakened rope would simply do the rest to bind them up. I could see this as an expensive method if you were using multiple sets through the day. For sure you would want to add some blood or hair into the ropes to act as a focus and cut the breath cost down a bit. I imagine each set of bolas could run you 50-100 breaths to awaken it but we don't have great figures for this do we?
-
The Bola is a throwing weapon with 3 seperate ends of cordage tied together with heavy weights on the end of each of them. When thrown the weapon reaches out into a wingspan the length of the cords and as any part of it hits a target it will entangle it. As good as it is already, there are very few things that can't be strengthened by awakening. And I think the weights would allow a rope to be thrown quite a bit further than one with no weights. Also awakening the rope to hold onto its target as it leaves your hand is probably the best way to secure a soon to be captured enemy. But what about the throw and what the awakened rope can do in the air? Do you think it could choose to flex itself in a way to improve accuracy? I know awakened rope has been used to sling stones. With that in mind could you almost forgot the bolas Idea and simply put a weight on a piece of cordage that was significant enough that the cord could attempt to throw the rock and if that rock was tied to it the cord would simply follow the rock from there? As far as hard to beat options for awakened less lethal weapons I think this could be a solid one. Maybe even small small weighted ones that could be loaded into a sling as they are awakened to tie someone up before being sling down range at the bad guy.

Lifeless and awakened sensation of the world around them
DoctaDajman replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Does nightblood have to feed on them? Or simply seeing them once is enough? I mean I dont remember him feeding on Vivenna but he was excited she was near by and yelled out telepathically to her didnt he? Yeah that was kind of my thought with a lifeless K9 or something. It would be cool if you could command them to track a scent... and being lifeless they would never tire, stop, or get distracted from their task. In fact I think a fun cop / detective story line may well involve a group of k9 handlers using lifeless dogs... put a vest on them and make them even harder to stop. -
So the cloak was able to sense and react to a direct threat of the arrow. Cloth is able to grab people. Lifeless are able to distinguish between one side or another. Phantoms can distinguish between a lifeless and a person. Somehow all awakened items are able to sense the world around them. How specific can that get though? If I want to write about a bounty hunter who spends his spare time on stake outs storing mental speed into zinc minds... I fear he may miss his target exiting a pub or whatever right? But could he have some awakened entity, maybe a straw man or a lifeless hound, watching / smelling for a specific person and then alert him when they see the target?
-
Okay. I thought it would be a long shot but worth the ask. My next question would be this. If a combatant were an aetherbound would they be able to see aether in and on their shadow? For instance they witness their shadow growing some roseite over their arm as it gets raised, or they watch as vines shoot out of their leg towards where someone is? These sorts of tells could offer a lot more insight into what the shadows intention is... and if the shadow is the person who is choosing to grow some aether they are bound to would it show up as a part of their shadow? What about any other magic that may be able to interact with electrum. Are awakenings enough a part of a person to be seen or benefit from it? Probably a large stretch there.
-
Could you powder up some dried bone and mix it with blood to create clay or some kind of bio-dough? If you wrapped up a brain would it work as a lifeless? I know this is some sick necromancer crap. What about sawdust and blood? Natural resins to make it plyable?
-
If an electrum misting were to have some bond to a cosmic entity (maybe harmony through hemalurgy or even one of those primal aethers like silijana) do you think that the cosmic being could communicate to their subject anything about the electrum shadows? I think F zinc could be beneficial to making more sense of the information from the shadows. But what if you had a cosmicly powerful being in your mind or bonded in a way to you when you burn it?

Yeah I love the MAG. And I really like that picture of the KB scholar. The other examples freak me out a bit. I personally dislike the body builder physique and much prefer to picture them closer to worlds strongest man athletes. But perhaps for some kolossblooded it truly is as simple as blue or gray skinned humans. As examples pointed out. That blood will continue to dilute itself. We breed a lot of rabbits. If I get a Californian rabbit and breed it to a New Zealand then I have a mix breed. If I breed that to a full NZ the babies are only 25% Californian at that point. Pair it again and it is 12.5. Again and it is 6.25%. At this point it is acceptable to call it a full NZ but honestly there is still 6.25% of its DNA that could prompt one of the babies to come out looking more Californian than NZ. You could be down the line 4 or 5 generations from the first koloss and have a set of fraternal twins where one is a 5foot 2 blue skinned human and the other is a 6foot 8 pale skinned twinborn. Of course that is just me thinking genetically with what I have seen from breeding rabbits, boas, and pythons. Unless you are playing with true recessive genes and hit something that covers up all other genes (like a red eyed white rabbit... it will never look like anything other than all white with red eyes) then the possibilities are endless. More to that point, for breeding meat rabbits, we specifically hold back the monsters targeting very specific attributes. Some of my rabbits have feet that are nearly twice as long as others. I am sure somewhere in their past was flemish giant. It still happens that some are born that way and we have to send them to freezer camp because I dont like the massive feet... that is fake weight on the scale. Others grow bone faster and others will have that perfect back strap that we are after. Back to cosmere... I dont believe that everyone on Scadrial is strictly human. We know that skaa were built differently than nobles even. We know that the Terris have different proportions as well. Found in the coppermind: So I dont see why a KB couldn't possess some odd looking features like larger feet or thicker build. I personally envision my KB to be mixed and just look bigger in general. The strength difference I envision as being more like a certain % more use out of whatever mass they do have. Not cannon but knowing how genetics work it make sense. Some people are just denser and can move more weight with a different build completely naturally all training aside. Blue skin is a bit wild as well. I would say why not have a person gifted with more kolossblooded traits who doesn't have blue skin? End of the day Brandon has left space to write in a genetically gifted fullborn. It is all in the genepool. It could happen. And Brandon has opened an entirely new can of worms with spiritual DNA. Its not all based off of what we see in the physical either. In the end, if you dig the blue and gray skin but want human proportions make it happen. And note also that the further into new eras we get the more likely it is for the unlikely genetic combos to happen. If I stopped a selective breeding program and allowed my rabbits to breed with whomever they want then I would end up with some really really cool bunnies. I would also end up with really weird ones. Here are 2 rabbits I really like. They are both what you call tort, one carries a dilute gene and the other is not dilute. Everything else is the same... not speaking for proportions. It was exciting to see it because we have no dilute in our rabbitry. We got a new white rabbit and white covers up everything so you can't know until you breed them to a colored rabbit. We hit our dilute and, while I think it is uglier than the clean reds of its brother, keeping the dilute will put that gene into our pool and it opens up a ton of possibilities for other rabbit colors in the future.

Like the title asks. What do you all think would happen to a kandra if they were able to burn A-Copper. Would the copper cloud they produce create for them more protection against the flaw? Could it hide them from harmony or at least make them more resistant to his will? Has it been asked or tried before and I am missing it?
-
I guess that is sort of what I am eluding to. This is a much more modern example (and heaven knows leg press is a terrible gauge anyways) but that simulated strength to held the weight of a person... when not used to hold the weight of that person. Does it exist or not? If you can do 50 push-ups in 2 minutes at 190lbs and decided to make your weight 10x that much for those same 2 minutes would you be able to do 50 push-ups still? Why then does that not increase your bench at the same time? If you can do 10 muscle ups at 190 can you do 10 muscle ups at 1900? If yes... what changes that says you can do 10 muscle ups at 1900 but can still only wield the same hammer that you used to? If you were in a position where you are on your back and you have to kick a heavy opponent off of you and you tap weight your strength to squat a 1900 lb you doesn't translate into being better equipped to kick off a 300 lb attacker? You could lift yourself in a squat but since you are suddenly not pushing off the ground your own weight and instead are pushing off of another being or another item you don't have the strength to do it?
-
F Iron is described as giving users the strength to function. Weight is shown to be used to directly effect the world around the user. How does the strength to function not turn into strength to effect the world around you as well? If someone that weighs the same as a car were to fall to the ground and catch themselves then do a couple clapping push-ups wouldn't that same person be able to stand in front of a car moving towards them and catch it? Someone who weighs in excess of 2000 lbs can do a normal squat but they still only have the extra strength to left over to add the same few hundred lbs to the bar on top of that squat? How does the strength your muscles are able to produce increase proportionally for everything you do while it's effect outside of supporting yourself stays exactly the same but the world can crumble around you because your new weight is impacting everything you have done? I would suggest it is the same backwards. Someone who is storing weight shouldn't be able to lift nearly as much as they would have before hand. If you weigh 2000 lbs for a baseball throw how does that not effect the way that baseball travels or even feels in your hand? I know F Iron seems to break the most rules and has the most "because magic" feel to it but I am curious if there are some smart folks in the forums who can explain to me how someone who does 3 times their body weight in a squat normally can suddenly weight 10x their normal weight and suddenly their strength is only allowing them to squat 30% of their entire weight but they can squat to support themselves just fine.

If they had access to medallion tech and a few gold medallions they could have used Miles for infinite health battery. Much more valuable than just leading a little band of robbers.

I was thinking about zinc vs steel feruchemy and where the differences lie. Then I saw a clip from the movie limitless and it made me wonder if bullet time is more steels thing then is zincs thing more of a limitless moment? Zinc compounder = endless supply.
