What about for a rock or lead shot? Do you think you could effectively move quickly enough to launch a half lb worth of something golf ball sized to sling it faster than a sling could throw one? How much speed would you need to tap to make your thrown rocks travel supersonic?
-
Why should a steel runner ever use anything other than thrown weapons? If you could pitch a baseball at even 85mph and then sped up all of that mechanism by 10x would that then mean that that baseball is traveling supersonic or would it not transfer quite like that? I think WoBs have said something about the energy calculations being skewered to not be so overpowered... but if it is all things other than the feruchemist that are effected how is it that clothes and other objects, like carrying a person, don't destroy the feruchemist as they tap speed either?

I love combining magics. This one is going to look at awakening and F steel (bonus A bendalloy thought). We know that an awakened cloth can react to the speed of an arrow at least... and I know this is not the same mechanic but we see a vine able to catch a bullet. I say that simply to illustrate how fast certain magics are able to move and react. I imagine the spore sees similarly to awakened objects. Maybe not though, if needing to default we know for a fact that the awakening can react to good traditional archery equipment. But what of awakening while the user is tapping speed? I assume the biggest benefit here is being able to visualize and verbalize commands far faster than a traditional awakener. But what does that mean beyond that? If I command a rope to act as my hands and grab what I want them too, but I am moving at 4x normal human speed, do those ropes move like slugs to me or do they maintain the speed I am currently at assuming the material doesn't get destroyed in the process? Likewise, if I awaken something while my speed is tapped will that rope maintain that original speed because that is what my hands were working at when I spoke the command? Bonus... for someone with the 9th heightening or above who can awaken at a range... will it cross through a bendalloy bubble?

I love the iron compounder. "Deader" is the name in the MAG for them and the description is that they have a nack for flattening themselves.

A new vs battle simply to spice up a poll

I should probably have left these in the first post. Wayne's eye and head should be in the same realm as a shardblade to the spine. I guess this one where he went back and forth was before the Wayne one. I dont think that the shardblade severing the spine is going to really do a ton other than slowing them down and using resources. How many times could Miles heal through it? I dont know. At least 10x more than Wayne would be my guess. Would that be enough to allow Miles to make it through the shardbearers defenses? Bullets or knives through the eye slots? -
Really was wishing for some gold compounding skills this week and then thought of how unfortunate it would be to get so cocky with that power set... I imagine myself getting happy to face tank everything and then end up allowing nightblood to nick me... oof. For this one please assume Miles has full metalminds ready to be tapped and burned, implanted and hidden in every extremity including his head.

I am typing this as I suffer from flu. Whole body aches and the pains of nasty chest congestion. It makes me think about gold ferrings who suffer systemic illness to store their health. I think I would make a terrible gold ferring because I would simply wimp out and never actually choose to store health at all. But being a full feruchemist makes me wonder how you could offset the awefulness of the moment. Tin can store pain... perhaps the whole body aches of storing health would be lessened greatly if you stored away the pain itself as well. What about zinc? If you stored a ton of mental speed along with your health would you be able to essentially fast forward through the worst parts of storing health? I guess you could probably tap some determination to help you through it. And since so much of being systemically ill stems from some sort of shock, and our #1 answer to that is hydration... maybe tapping some bendalloy would help to ease the pains and suffering of storing gold. Im.open to other suggestions. Another obvious one is burning pewter through it to power through.

This is interesting and may lead to my cosmere version of synth rights argument from fallout. I never really thought about lasting damage even to the spren. I dont think storing connection between people would really damage a bond or relationship. From my understanding of duralumin feruchemy I always thought that storing was basically just not even caring. You have to have a connection to someone to hurt and when you store that connection it isn't a betrayal it just is nothing. I guess this is the closest thing in the cosmere to that new show Severance where they completely seperate the persons home life from their work life. Its like 2 different living people in the same body and only one of them is active at once. While one is existing the other doesnt. Same thing in my mind to the storing of connections. I dont think storing that connection is a breaking of that bond so much as that bond simply doesn't exist. Do we have any ideas what spren life for the deadeyes was like between being bonded to their radiant and the deadeye bonds we see now? It seems they are in pain when they are summoned not the other way around right? So what if storing that connection and that bond returns them to a sort of resting point as opposed to hurting them? Because I don't see the deadeye bond as being the same as making oaths and then breaking them. Although would breaking that bond just cause them to return to their pre bonded state which is permanently in the physical realm? And if they are in the physical realm permanently then wouldn't they be relieved of the pains? Perhaps manipulating these bonds would instead appear as them existing in the physical realm and not turning to mist when let go. Perhaps retapping that bond does in fact allow one to summon quicker and change the blade a bit. Its all speculation but I think understanding the headspace of a deadblade may help and the difference between one that is again bonded or not. Which is worse? Being a deadeye in the cognitive realm bonded against your will, or a deadblade with no bond at all anymore in the physical realm?
-
Wouldn't the damage done to the deadeye revert once the connection was tapped again? Or do you think there is something about it being net neutral to the ferring but not neutral to the spren? I like the idea of Speeding up the summoning process and perhaps changing the shape of the blade. Both extremely useful.
-
What do you think being able to gain higher connection with a deadeye shardblade could allow a duralumin ferring to do?

Shardblades and that critical 10 heartbeats
DoctaDajman replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Is it that easy to dislodge a gemstone from a shardblade? I always imagined the metal that the shardblades are made of as being indestructible and unmoveable. If the blade itself grew to accept the gem and the gem is now set into the blades hilt then I would imagine it being impossible to remove unless the deadeye somehow allowed it to be removed. Of course a shardbearer breaking it might be more plausible... although I wonder what gemstone was in Dalinars blade as I feel that even shardplate wouldn't be able to destroy certain stones and gems in the manner he was shown to do it. I think the Gemstones being removed or destroyed is likely far easier said than done. -
Shardblades and that critical 10 heartbeats
DoctaDajman replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah. I was meaning deadeye. The shape choice was simply if there was a deadeye in the most ideal shape what would it be. I have watched entirely too many Elden Ring videos recently and and the thrown weapons and spinning weapons have made my mind start wandering for sure. The idea of hucking it out there and then resummoning it as someone who is not a radiant just seems like a heck of a power set... staying alive for the 10 heartbeats in-between was the Trick. I'm pretty well sold on the bendalloy bubbles safety for resummoning as being the most ideal pairing for throwing specifically. Getting the shardblade oriented to be the most effective it can be is my concern now. Throwing it like a spear might work but I am curious about how well it would pass through multiple targets that way. Does the entire weapon fuzz once it starts cutting? I was thinking of spears and the fact that the whole shaft would have to fuzz if you wanted a piercing weapon to be truly effective. There is some amount of warping and shape shifting even deadeye blades can do given they themselves changed shapes to accept and mount the gemstone. I imagine that overtime even a deadeye that is thrown primarily would start to change shape to accommodate it's use. -
As I have been thinking about using allomancy to create a buzzsaw... or fuzzsaw of death... I started thinking of other, less cumbersome ways to turn a shardblade into a ranged weapon. Of course throwing it is the most immediate thought but then I have to question how to best suppliment that with the requirement of 10 heartbeats before resummoning it. Time dilation must be the fastest answer. Even knowing that a bendalloy bubble will pop when it is touched by the shardblade, 10 heartbeats worth of a bendalloy bubble to resummon a blade would not be very likely to burn through bendalloy too wastefully and in those 10 heartbeats you can already assess the new situation after your last throw and be swinging for the fences at the most critical enemies again. Of course steel feruchemy would probably be a solid choice as well, allowing you to speed everything up but it may eat through your reserves a lot faster that way. On the other hand, I actually think something like F gold and A pewter would slow down the summoning time as I envision them both as keeping the heart rate well leveled out. There is always the option to summon and throw, raining death from above while dancing over the enemy with steel or any other form of flying but I dont see it ever increasing the rate with which you could launch out the attacks. Any other thoughts and ideas for ways to ramp up the rate of fire for slingin shardblades? Or any thoughts on preferred shardblade designs for use as a throwing weapon? Single vs double edged blades and such other thoughts. My current thought is that, for a ranged shardblade slinger the best load out not needing to alter the blade after summoning is probably going to involve A bendalloy.

Would it be easier to push on a filled metalmind that belonged to the twinborn than a filled metalmind that was not theirs? I wonder why allomamcers in TFE times never put together they fact that some of their terrisman wore jewelry that couldn't be pushed and sensed. If someone could push or pull on their own metalminds then perhaps that would be the best way to bond it and make it work. Otherwise it will just need to be done before hand attaching some device with a bunch of sperate metal anchors on it to hold the blade and allow it to be pushed. -

Yeah I would love to see how the gemstone or other fixtures may appear in the cognitive realm... if they are attached and part of the deadeye. If the metal fixtures don't fuzz with the Blade do they fall off as it fuzzes or do they become resistance disallowing the blade to pass entirely through objects? Im thinking perhaps metal on a clamp of some kind to act as a lever system for pushing and pulling would be the best at the handle and away from the blade itself. The handle would meet the resistance it normally would while letting the blade spin freely through the air cutting all but the thickest cheese wheels. Still given the option to resummon would be perfect but a big anchor at the base of the hilt would allow you to pull it back stopping the spin.... and catch it handle first with ease. -

DoctaDajman replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I would also be curious if a twinborn could push and pull on their own metalminds easier than metal invested with other investiture. That is a big question I have here. At one point I thought that adding some sort of metal along the blade (like a clamp to act as an anchor) would allow more control over pushes and pulls... which it probably would. But... as a blade fuzzes what would happen when the clamp hits the target? Would the clamp be a hard stop on that blades momentum and ability to be pushed? Maybe the best spots to put anchors are in the handle... or even a larger counter weighted handel that clamps over the handle with different pushing points. Knowing that steel and iron sight can differentiate between metal types you could place a totally different metal type at the very bottom of the handle and pull specifically on that so that the blade comes back to you hilt first every time... which would be so cinematic. -

DoctaDajman replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So do you think a person bonded to a shardblade could will its shape into one that would accommodate some sort of studded anchors in the hilt or blade? Like a nut and bolt type of deal? Or even simply wrapping the handle with some metal underneath the wrap to be able to push and pull on? And where does the line get drawn that any.metal fixtures put on in this way may turn to mist and be summoned back with the blade or will they fall as a heap to the ground? Does the gem itself identify as a part of the blade and thus become immune to invested arts so any metallic fixtures that are capable of turning to mist and being summoned back would also suffer the same becoming immune to the push? -
Shardblade and the flying buzzsaw of death (thanks Kelsier)
DoctaDajman replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah this was my understanding as well. I guess from here my question is, are the gems fastened on with metallic fittings other than the shardblades original materials? If so those should be available for pushing unless they all just happen to be made of aluminum... And since the material to fit the gem onto the blade as well as the gems itself move into and out of existance with the summoning of the shardblade then wouldnt you be able to adhere other metal along the blade in the same method to adhere the fittings for the gem granting you the ability to push and pull on different anchors along the weapon period? -
I had this vision and thought... someone with access to a shardblade also ends up with steel and iron allomancy. They summon their shardblade into the world and clip some metal clips onto the sword in multiple different spots. They will the sword to stay in the world and start pushing and pulling. If they had the control over allomancy that Kelsier shows with his fight against the inquisitors they could spin the shardblade quite rapidly... and then have the ability to allow it to return to the cognitive realm or resummon it back to their hand, pull on the clips back to themselves and start the process over again if ever they needed to. The picture in my mind is a totally telekinetic figher with a ranged soul severing sword of death. Any thoughts are welcome. Edit: On second thought... the gemstone in the hilt of a shardblade is able to stay connected to the blade when summoned and let go of. What mechanics work that and would they remain the same if you were to set in some metal studs or something? I am now hooked on the idea that the gemstone exists... were all shardblades made with the gemstones already fixed to them? I was under the impression they were added afterwords. I know WoB says the shardblade itself can't be pushed on but what of metal fixtures added "after market".
-
I imagine, in my mind, that it would be easier to allomantically burn a shardblade given it is God metal than to store into one. However, if you had a chunk of shardblade, or honorblade, would the shard of metal simply fuzz through your entire digestive tract and leave you dead? If I remember correctly there is a chunk of honorblade floating around now that may be small enough for someone to ingest... I wonder what powers they may recieve burning it?

How fast does a does a steel push fuel, the bullet travel
DoctaDajman replied to Blue-phoenix186's topic in Mistborn
Its tough. Being an avid traditional archery fanatic who likes lobbing big heavy sharp arrows, I get to see the benefits of ramping up for maximum penetration. There is no such thing as overkill from a hunters perspective. I want a 2 inch wide wound channel that clears through the animal cleanly and an arrow stuck in the mud behind it. If done right most of them will barely know they were hit and there is hardly any tracking because they jump... run a few yards before stopping and bleeding out on the spot. Bullets are different, and I will add that I imagine shooting an enemy combatant is different. The arguments for or against it all are plentiful. I prefer to keep my shotgun loaded with birdshot in the house because I really don't want to be responsible for sending a slug into a neighbors wall... however... if an intruder was wearing a plate I would much rather have that slug and I wouldn't care about the walls at all. In the spirit of sticking with my first opinion, that there is no such thing as overkill, I have to say that penetration, even with bullets, is super effective for killing. I always roll my eyes at shows and movies where the guy gets hit in the upper chest / shoulder area and they are all good a few scenes later... noone plays up the seriousness of sucking chest wounds and horrible hemo/pneumothorax. In the case of steel pushing you really really need a bullet that will not deform when it hits resistance. I'm not saying a hollow point couldnt penetrate a plate with a steel push but I just don't see it happening with the bullet being designed to expand and slow down so rapidly once it hits something. If anything you just end up getting in a pushing war with the enemy and either they, or you, goes flying right? Of course there are plenty of ethical arguments to be made about shooting rounds that will carry on and the backstop is an issue... but really the backstop should be an issue to think about no matter what. This is absolutely the advantage of double barrel or multiple weapons being carried though. You get to choose different loadouts and use them to the best of their abilities. -
Simple question. I wanted to say sunlight aether could be manipulated to appear as lighting or act as it. Maybe Division surgebinding? Im sure there is some kind of aon combo that could do it. If someone in. The cosmere were to go full faith build (lightning from the souls game) how would you build it?

Sometimes it would be nice to listen to conversations at the other side of a room... but it would definately be far more beneficial in 90% of the areas in my life to have strength and endurance for hauling endless bags of soil around the yard for the wife. The honey-do list will be far easier with pewter. And at the end of the day... if someone wants me to know something they will just tell me. If not... then I probably don't want to hear it anyways.

How fast does a does a steel push fuel, the bullet travel
DoctaDajman replied to Blue-phoenix186's topic in Mistborn
I wonder if the feat to shoot through the table was because he increased the speed so much or because he is able to effectively crank up the momentum of a bullet by putting his weight behind it as it hits. It has been pointed out a bunch that wooden shields are enough to stop pushed coins but coins have awful dimensions and are usually soft metals that will deform really easily against resistance. So any soft copper or gold coin is going to deform and flatten... like a hollow point not made for penetration at all. Now some hard cast lead or steel core bullets that are designed for penetration is a totally different game. Traveling at a faster speed can do the job for sure... but as any human sized allomancer pushing it (even if it doesn't directly increase velocity) into and through the impact you are adding all of your weight to that momentum calculation which greatly improves your penetrative power assuming your bullet is not completely flattening out on contact (the harder cast penetrative rounds will be far more useful for it with added weight too). In Wax's case he is also a crasher who can add building levels of mass behind any given shot. I dont see a hollow point soft cast lead bullet penetrating that table in almost any circumstance but instead would hit it and shove it away from Wax if he continued pushing against it... Basically pancaking the guy behind it. So my personal opinion on the matter is that the speed of the bullet isn't the main benefit you get out of steel pushing it... the timing is nearly impossible to manage in my mind anyways... however anytime a bullet is shot, if you shove on it with some allomancy you are effectively adding your mass to the projectile at the point it makes contact and you will aid it greatly in penetrative force so long as you have a material made for such. Your bullet material matters a lot in this scenario. You want something that is hardened as much as possible for busting through resistance. And your goal of pushing shouldn't be Speeding up the bullet more as much as it should be pushing it at the moment of impact so that your weight helps maintain that momentum. -
@Duxredux nailed it. Kelsier killed an inquisitor and proved to the whole final empire it was possible. While at their base powerlevel Zane may have stronger mistborn blood than Kelsier and he may have a spike boosting his steel beyond that even... we see that mistborn vs mistborn is about so much more. Same amount of atium at the end of Mistborn before Kelsier dies... I think his skill would body Zane. Kelsier was the first one we saw on screen spinning metal like propellers around himself. Zane could float. I just dont think Zane has the grit nor wits to go up against Kelsier at any time other than if you put an experienced Zane from end of book 2 against a fresh snapped Kelsier just out of the pits...
