Hello all. I am officially submitting my character for Approval in the Alleyverse. All details should be below, with a few notes expanded outside the quote.

    Note on the Smedry talent:
It's been nearly three months since Eighth's "talent" activated, transporting him from the airships of Southern Scadrial to the middle of the Underground. Since then, he's tried to make his way through this strange land, glad to be in a place he can finally speak and be understood.
Note that worldhopping-level teleportation is not the only function this particular Smedry talent could serve. In the hands of an inexperienced, unwitting owner, however, this most basic function is likely the only that will manifest for some time.

    Note on the Rtich motivator:
Eighth's Smedry talent dragged him into the midst of the events of [Spoilers for Calamity]

      Reveal hidden contents

The Reckoner's final stand against Prof, right about where Megan began dipping into various realities.

This was his shortest worldhopping experience. He was close enough to Abraham that when [Spoiler again for Calamity]

      Reveal hidden contents

Prof cut off Abraham's arm, Rtich and all

Eighth recovered the Rtich motivator. He saw enough to get an idea for how it's used, but hasn't practiced nor innovated too much.

    Note on the unsealed ironmind:
Despite both the Brunstell and Wilg carrying specifically two-power medallions (either iron and brass, or iron and duralumin), I have chosen to have either have Eighth possess an iron-only medallion, or else be unaware of the other power present (conveniently leaving myself leeway for any RP).
Further, for the sake of gameplay, I assume that Eighth can only store weight, not tap it. I do this because a) there seems to be a theory that unsealed metalminds cannot provide both storing and tapping, only one or the other, and b) as a means of mitigating power levels. This might change down the road, with the justification that Eighth was only aware of the storing capability of the ironmind.

I think this looks good! The only wondering I have is the level of adeptness that Eighth is with his motivator. But either way, I think it’s fairly safe to approve this. He’s in depth, interesting, unique, and about the power level of a radiant, without the healing.

    Approved!

I am making a character, and would appreciate some feedback. Especially, I worry that my character is a) too overpowered---the merits feel odd---or b) too much of a lone-wolf. Really, any and all feedback is very much welcome.

Hmmm. It is certainly an interesting concept! I generally like it a lot. The only issue I can spot with it is that loner aspect of the character. However, that can be overcome if there is some reason for him to be engaged in the plot.

Actually, there might be a way for me to lock your character in the Alleyverse that would be plot relevant, if you would be interested…

That could both solve the problem of not socializing (as he would have to get to the bottom of what’s going on with his power before he can actually escape), as well as giving him something to work towards past just leaving the Alleyverse.

If you’re interested, I can go into more depth in PMs

  3. Brief update to all of y’all, especially @RoyalBeeMage, as I’m RPing with them: I am really bogged down with work this week and the next. I’ll try my best to post, and I will still be available to moderate and help out, but my actual RPing will take longer than usual. Hopefully I’ll have the time over the weekend though!

My goal is to be every transfem stereotype ever. So, let's get started on that. :3

Also I've noticed that I like girls even more now that I'm out of the egg.

Naive idiot egg me: I'm pretty happy now, but when I have a girlfriend, I'll be happier than I've ever been in my life.

Me now: I'm happier than I've ever been in my life, and when I have a girlfriend, I'll be happier than is actually possible.

It’s actually insane how I went from “yeah, I like girls, typical straight things” to “omg GIRLS. I am way too gay to even be on the same planet as women, I need a gf so baaaad”

It is wild how coming out gender-wise can affect how you express your sexuality.

I was thinking on some new ways to use Allomantic duralumin when I remembered @Tamriel Wolfsbaine's idea on having multiple layers on a metal ball to let a rapid-fire duralumin Flare be used when I had a thought; you can only Burn metals that are injested or that pierce your body, right?

Well, what if you made a mechanical device that could be set to lightly pierce your skin with an Allomantic metal, such as pewter, though a separate metal piercing would be done every second in quick succession, so Burning it away with duralumin would give you a sustained stream of greatly enhanced Allomancy rather than a single momentary burst if power.

If you could use this to get even 10-20 seconds of duralumin strength pewter, you'd have a massive advantage against other opponents.

I suppose you could rig the device to a glove that activated when you made a certain flex with your hand, and maybe you could set it to give bursts instead of a stream as well. This second option is less of a stream of power, but getting 10 bursts of pewter/duralumin would be pretty powerful as well, especially if you don't have to worry about ingesting more metal reserves in the middle of the fight.

As a side bonus, you could use such a delivery system for Allomantic metals to greatly reduce Leeching effectiveness, as you could easily replace lost metals in combat.

hmmm. I honestly don't see how that wouldn't work! However, I would imagine it would either be sporadic or extremely metal consuming. Say you wanted even a minute of pewter strength. Either you have it fire every other second or every five seconds, which would lead to inconsistent bursts of strength, or you go for the consistent route, firing every second.

In that case, you would need to have 60 separate chunks of a metal. I imagine it would be tough to create a machine that could both hold that many chunks (even if we're talking pez sized or smaller) and not be clunky as all hell.

What would the injection and storage combo of such a device look like?

  6. Chloris, The Mistwarrens.

Chloris had wandered. Again. You seem to find a new way of escaping a job every time you get hired, Minthe said. She was right. This time, she had managed to tear up the shop’s insides through a freak reaction with midnight essence and an angry customer. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, but the shop was ruined. She just felt…disconnected lately.

As she walked, Chloris quickly realized she had reached the end of this part of the warrens. She was promptly met with a shelter for those that couldn’t afford housing, or were otherwise dispossessed. A strike of recognition hit her. Edgedancers were the ones helping these people. She should be helping these people.

Her body turned ink black. No! Don’t you remember? Did you forget why you walked away? Why you broke your oaths? You weren’t enough. You couldn’t protect them. You were not made for that life.

It will only lead to more people getting hurt.

Chloris fell to the floor. She couldn’t do it. She wasn’t enough. She had failed them. She will fail others.

Ripples of midnight black spikes shot out around her body, with the spikes erratically jutting out, oscillating and shifting across her skin.

    I have failed you.

Heh, I am actually clueless how I stayed in the egg this long. While in the egg, I had the very cis male experiences of:

    • Wanting to wear fem clothing
    • Thinking that if I were born a girl, I would be a cis lesbian
    • Wanting to show up at a future wedding also wearing a white dress
    • Being annoyed that I wasn't born a girl, and therefore not a cis lesbian
    • Constantly writing my main characters as female, and also headcanoning multiple of my own characters as transfem
    • Wanting to have lesbian sex(?!?!?!?!)
    • Being annoyed that I also 'wasn't' transfem (Not sure why I decided I wasn't)
    • Thinking that female genitals would be better than male genitals

The only possible reason I stayed in the egg this long was that I didn't know enough about trans people at the time. But, then, after March 16 when it cracked, every Google search made me more and more sure I was transfem.

I mean, repression is one hell of a drug. But yeah, folks really need to be educated younger, because boy does knowing that you can actually be who you want to be helps.

"Actually, it won't. Did you know that a feruchemist can store their pain in a metalmind?"

This lead me to believe that you could store pain in either Trellium or Harmonium.

Ah, that’s where you’re wrong. They were using the almighty Tinmind. Pain is, at least for Mistborn purposes, a sense!

  9. Week Six

Perses wandered the shifting hallways. He didn't even know if they were hallways anymore. The walls felt like walls, but what if they weren't? He had never been able to actually see them anyways. Maybe the House could mess with more than just the walls. Could he even trust his own senses?

No. That's how the House gets him. That's what it wants.

Perses let out a raggedy laugh, which turned into a scream. "YOU WANT ME? YOU WANT ME?Perses stumbled to the floor. "well you'll have to try better than that," he whispered into the ground. House wouldn't get him. It would waste its time with him for the rest of Perses' life. If the House wanted whatever it wanted, the only way it could get that is to give up on him.

Perses got up and marched onward. Where to, he didn't know. He hadn't ever managed to return to his home, and hadn't even smelled a glimpse of it in ages. Though after the first few times sleeping in the hallways, he no longer feared it. It was ground like any other, and if he died in his sleep, he wouldn't complain. He was the bloody Survivor. Once he was out of this hellhole, he would have powers like no other. A mistborn. No, better. It was just a matter of time before he--

A wave of cold enveloped Perses' body. He felt an icy cold hand touch his chest, and then pushing through him. He slumped down, immobilized. Everything went dark. His senses refused to work.

All Perses could do was feel. He felt hands work their way up his body. Beginning on his stomach and moving to the chest, they worked. Another set of hands grabbed a hold of his feet. The chill was enough to make him want to scream. Yet he couldn't.

Slowly, oh so slowly, the hands worked their way up his body. Atop the neck, winding ever upward. The hands were now enveloping him, taking over what little thought he had left.

With a jolt, he felt the hands sink into his flesh. Through his skull, clasping his mind. Fear overwhelmed him, but he couldn't even hear his heart beating.

    Sleep, Perses.

So what about stormlight stores in spheres? If I have enough stormlight I can just compound whenever I need luck.

So I’ve contacted the elders once more, and I’ll be honest with you, they do not really have a good answer for ya.

My thought is that the Alleystorm exists for narrative purposes more than worldbuilding purposes, and that it would be a much different world if Alleylight was storable and easily used for different things. So I’ll just make up a worldbuilding detail.

Alleylight itself is not storable within the spheres. It can refill the spheres, but the nature of what investiture is being filled is being keyed as soon as it affects an object in particular.

So once it enters a Roshar-made sphere, it will become Stormlight. Once it enters an elantrian (who don’t necessarily need it), it becomes Dor. I believe it can be channeled allomantically like the mists would, but again, it would become keyed once it enters. So while in the storm, I would say it is possible for it to fill the metalmind at a pretty good rate. However, there is no easy way to store the Alleylight for future use.

However, take this lore tidbit as a bandage fix, not exactly a written in metal type of thing.

  11. 1 hour ago, TheFrugalWizard said:

... so that means feruchemists can compound using Stormlight. Just right off the top of my head that seems absurdly overpowered. If you want to allow it I won't complain but consider this: stormlight from alleystorms allows a feruchemist to draw power from it, but only in normal amounts, so stormlight replaces direct storage of traits. I cant compound but I dont have to store traits as long as I have stormlight.

Again just a suggestion, easily worked into the magic system. If you want to keep it Cosmere canon I get it, just beware of absurdly fortuitous... everything from Frisian.

Also mind if I friend you on discord?

Not a problem in the friend department! I will check in with the elders on if that was their idea for the unkeyed-ness.

  12. 1 hour ago, TheFrugalWizard said:

Question about the alleystorms: are they totally third party; the Investiture is unkeyed, or are they just Highstorms, and therefore keyed to Honor and Cultivation?

    @Koloss17

I have just inquired with those more knowledgeable than I. Here is their response:

Sorry, I had no idea what the Alleyverse is. In that case it sounds like you can use that investiture from the Alleystorm to fuel your Feruchemy, as long as it's unkeyed.

hehehe that's fair. If you ever want to RP or like creative writing, I'm the head mod. It's really fun!

  14. FYI: I have just edited the character template. Most of the adjustments are minor, but the biggest is shifting from guilds to affiliations. Since guilds are not particularly prevalent in the current story (though that is subject to change), and many characters are employing or being employed by other characters, I feel that having an affiliations section would better suit things.

There is no need to edit character sheets that are already approved, as this is just for ease of character creation for newcomers.

  15. So I've given a lot of thought to making this thread. In the end, I think it is a good idea, but there are some disclaimers.

    What this thread is:

    • A place to talk about NPCs
    • A place to coordinate with others about NPCs
    • A place to request feedback on NPCs or ask someone to control or make an NPC
    • A place to flesh out an NPC, for either world building or character development purposes

    What this thread is not:

    • A required place to post your NPCs
    • A place where we "approve" NPCs

In the end, this is a place to help create NPCs for your character or world building purposes. It is not a place that you have to get through to use an NPC. Rules are not changing, and in the end, NPCs are largely unregulated. If an NPC is integral to a character, and follow them around (like a spren), it would be great to pair that with your character in the character approval thread. Otherwise, there is no approval process for NPCs. However, as I have created NPCs or created NPCs to help out other characters, I have felt that a thread like this would be very useful. A place to create an NPC with feedback from others, as well as to communicate with others if you are making or piloting an NPC for someone else

I'd recommend using the character template here, but you are free to do as you wish, as again, we are not approving any posted NPCs (they're always approved, unless I specifically see a problem with em).

    Spoiler

    Name: Character Name
Appearance: A brief description of your characters. Could include height, hair and eye colour, complexion, what clothes they typically wear, how they carry themselves, etc. (Eg. A haughty man in his late thirties, lazy blue eyes, black hair with a characteristic streak of grey on the left side. He dresses in old fashioned Scadrian formal-wear and has a dueling cane perpetually in hand)
Affiliations: Please include any relevant groups or people your character is associated with.
Personality: Briefly describe the characters personality. How do they react to people below them? Above them? Their equals? Is there a discrepancy between their appearance and their true feelings? Or do they wear their emotions on their sleeve? What are they passionate about and what do they hate?
Concept: A short summary of what you feel the key components of the character are, ideally should be a single sentence or even only a few words. A sociopathic doctor, a bleeding-heart assassin, a dishonorable Radiant, etc.
Motivation (Short & long term goal): What is the character aiming for? What are they trying to get done this week and what are their longer term plans? Short term motivations could be as simple as finding somewhere to live or someone to talk to, long term motivations should ideally pull from the backstory and personality, and preferably tie in to their flaw.
Merits: Characters should have three minor merits, two normal merits and one major merit. A major merit is the defining ability of your character, what sets them apart from others. This could be being a Knight Radiant, or an expert swordsman, or a genius inventor. A normal merit is a secondary but still key skill or talent. The bread and butter skills that the character uses the most frequently after their major merit. Minor merits represent rp skills (Such as being a talented singer or musician), a lesser talent (An amateur swordfighter), or a very minor magical ability.
Flaws: What problems does your character face? Do they have a physical impediment to achieving their goals? A problematic personality? Or a disadvantageous social situation? Ideally a flaw feeds into a characters long term goal, this is the thing that must be overcome in order to achieve what they are looking for.
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): Can be as minimal or as detailed as you wish, does your family have any family? Friends? Enemies? (These will usually be represented as flaws as well) These relationships could be NPCs or they could be other player characters, though please ensure you consult with the players in question first. Please think carefully about this section, as who the character surrounds themselves with will often influence who they are.
Home Planet: Where is your character from? Can also list a specific heritage here (Eg. Veden, Elendelian, Arelish)
Current Residence: Where does your character sleep at night? Do they rent a room somewhere (And if so how do they pay for it?), do they have a cottage, a manse, an apartment? And which district of the city have they chosen to reside in? (See our Guide to Alleycity for information about districts and existing locations)
Backstory: What has led your character to where they are? This should tie many other of these fields together, explaining their motivations and how they achieved their merits.
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): What lingering threads from their backstory still hang over the character?
Links (Eg. Theme song, a spotify playlist, a pinterest mood board): Links to any resources or references you may have created or compiled for this character. Not mandatory but they are very fun to make

    Anyways, have fun posting!

Apologies for the double post, but I have a question. For a Radiant/Feruchemist, how would the alleystorm refill investiture? I assume giving the Radiant a decent amount of stormlight, but how about the metalmind? Refilling it a set amount? Or to the highest point it's been at recently? Or not at all?

Again, sorry about the double post.

Honestly this is a bit more of a Cosmere forum question.

The Alleystorm is just the equivalent of the highstorm on Roshar. From what I understand, it has the same properties as the highstorms. So the question is do highstorms refill metalminds? I would think the answer is no, but if you would like to post a question elsewhere on the shard and get back to me, you are more than welcome to.

  17. Perses, New Hallandren, Pygma's Workshop

Perses stood for a moment in shock. What had just happened? After a moment, he gathered his senses. "Did you just try to kill me? As a cheap trick?" He flared steel, approaching Pygma. Luckily, he managed to notice the insufferable smirk on Pygma's face. Perses huffed, striding away from her.

"So, do you like it?" she asked, with the grin bleeding into her words. Despite his blood pumping, he couldn't helped but be impressed. While he was quite the shot, and that he had the advantage at distance, he was not particularly muscular or adept at fighting in close quarters. Hopefully this coat would help in that department. "It'll do," Perses said. Still trying to calm his racing heart, he walked out without thanking Pygma.

Keshi, The Corridor, The Silver Dagger.

Keshi checked his own schematics. “I will need a decent amount of aluminum alloy and some small scraps.” He quickly checked over his charts on the economy of the area and did some calculations. With much effort he pulled the coins necessary from the large coin purse on Goto’s back. “I thing this will be enough.” He said, panting. “Can I now get to work?”

Venser accepted the coin, not bothering to count them. Though he always appreciated some coin, he was too focused on the blueprints. Few customers have paid with anything other than money, and never has he received anything as useful as this. The raw potential of this technology..... This could revolutionize his business.

By the time he had looked up, the fox was long gone.

Would it not be better to just have an arm or leg Blade Deadened, then Awaken the "severed" limb?

      Hide contents

Blood was still flowing, the limb was still intact - it just would have an artificial soul that can be Commanded (and likely be stronger - just as a Lifelss is generally stronger than a normal person).

So basically cut an arm with a shardblade, awaken the arm to have the arm commanded? Seems definitely interesting.

Im thinking that this would have the advantage of at the very least being able to command an arm to do previously impossible things, and having reactions of its own is pretty cool. There’s certainly potential here.

  19. So I was looking at the potential of awakening, and I had a gruesome thought.

Hypothetically, could someone chop off parts of their body (say, hands or arms), sow them back on, and with a sufficiently complex command, awaken their body part as a versatile prothetic?

the end result of this would be an effect similar to a kandra—being able to move and manipulate parts of your body in very grotesque and seemingly impossible ways. Pulling back fingers to reveal blades, using your thigh as a skin pocket, etc. potentially, though I’m not quite sure of the nature of lifeless, you would create a lifeless hand similar to Thing in the Addams Family.

(For those curious, this is a hypothetical based on a character that I’m making in the Alleyverse RP. I have…a lot of such theories, honestly.)

  20. Following Pygma, Perses was led to a singular cloaked figure. With a swift movement, the mannequin tore off its sheet, exposing the garment underneath. Taking a glance at Pygma, it was clear that she was quite happy with her work.

The garment itself was a sight to behold. It was a mistcoat, but like nothing Perses had ever seen. At the ends of the tassels, there were carefully placed, jagged blades. The coat itself felt…rough. “Leather?” Perses asked.

“Dyed black. Even if you wouldn’t care, I think it helps the look.”

Aside from the mostly standard cloak, stitched onto it was a careful arrangement of bone. Stretching from the chest to the arms, the bones formed a grotesque chestplate. It was a truly disturbing piece, like it came straight from damnation. Upon further inspection, it also came with a hood, with a seemingly decorative arrangement of bone attached to it.

”You said you wanted something distinctive, sooooo….” Pygma grinned. “But of course, I forget. You want functionality.”

She motioned to two boxes, both with identical lumps of yarn in them. However, one was emanating a noticeable aura to Perses’ bronzesense.

”Dump your breaths in the right one, and take the breaths from the left one, and then put on the cloak.” Noticing his skepticism, Pygma sighed. “Don’t worry. You’ll get your breaths back when you’re done.”

Reluctantly, Perses did as she asked. Without his Heightenings, he felt oddly blind. Funny, he thought. I held even less than this most of my life. However, his contemplation was interrupted by Pygma’s disturbingly cheery voice. “Great. Now repeat after me:”

”Act as my bodyguard and fight alongside me”

As soon as the words were spoken, the cloak came alive. It felt oddly…human. Well, aside from the bone and leather, it felt like it had a mind of its own. Like it was intelligent. The tassles moved with a fluid efficiency, like there was wind swirling around him.

Suddenly, the mannequin that used to hold the coat lunged at Perses. Reflexively, he jumped back. Yet as he went backward, the tassels jumped forward. In a quick flurry of slices, the mannequin was a pile on the floor.

    Quote

Note that technically, awakening requires visualization for a command to properly work. However, having Pygma give Perses a lecture on the exact visualization and intention of the command would mess with the mood, so I hope you can look past the magical plot hole in order to appreciate the mood of the scene.

Venser, The Corridor, The Silver Dagger.

Venser stared at the creature, stupefied. What had his life come to? However, above all else, he was a businessman. He looked at the blueprints, ignoring the outstretched paw. The designs were…magnificent. It was like nothing he had ever seen.

despite his wonder, he was a merchant. A Thaylen. He hid his astonishment carefully with a puzzled expression. “What do you need? While I appreciate the offer, anything I can sell you will have to cost some amount of money. But these schematics could certainly cheapen the price.”

    ok hello lovely people

but for a while i've been questioning things

    help

    how do you know?

Here’s the neat thing: ya don’t.

Sometimes, it’s clear as crystal. When I was first vibing as agender, I felt like I was okay with wanting to relate to feminine things, but right now I only wanted to move away from masculine things.

Then one day, I saw this image of a fantasy character in a card game, and I went: “her. I want to be her.” It was that snap moment.

But at the same time, it took me quite a while to realize I wasn’t cis. I ended up having to ease into the label of agender, tried it out, and only then deciding I liked it (until I discovered I was a trans woman in the above paragraph”.

Some things are worth easing into and trying out, and some things you just realize in a split second.
