Oh it's good, it's just too convoluted and intimidating for a new reader

Okay, so looks like I'll have to sort through and respond to a few of the subtexts here, which would also help me put my rationale for creating this topic and answer a few questions that might arise which one may not be so inclined to ask directly: First of all, and let's not pretend that this isn't the first alarm bell that rang in the heads of a lot of people here upon seeing this thread, it's quite clear from looking at the defensive responses: I do like Brandon Sanderson's works. I wouldn't be here otherwise. Click on my profile and see the no. of threads I've created, not just this one. Next, are we not supposed to be able to criticize an author? Are we not supposed to be able to disagree, not just to what they've written but also the things they say when we don't agree with their rationale? Brandon writes and talks about social and philosophical issues, this is gonna happen. Criticism is the very foundation of literature. Why gay male character? Because there are countries which specifically ban male homosexuality, eg: Singapore. Where I come from, the idea that talking about gay rights or even criminalization of male rape would take the spotlight away from women's issues is an argument that was used successfully. Let's not shy away from it, society has massive issues regarding the idea of masculinity. There's a Vine that I can't find right now that showed a guy reacting to two men holding hands with "disgusting", and then he sees two women together and hollers "are you gonna kiss or what!" Check out the rationale with creating canonical gay male characters in popular games like Mass Effect (check out the controversy regarding the number of heterosexual and lesbian characters) and Elder Scrolls (whose creator outright states that they took out Pelinal Whitestrake being gay because the player might feel weirded out that a former incarnation of their playable character was gay). Closer to home: remember the memes made in response to Dumbledore being gay? Orson Scott Card, the author of Ender's Game and a fellow Mormon author's statements against homosexuality? Now my response to the comments themselves: Regarding Drehy and Ranette: really? *scepticism*. You guys really don't think that Drehy and Ranette being gay was pivotal to their character? How much screentime have these characters even gotten? Especially Drehy, compared with other Bridge 4 characters. Also do you really not see the problem with this? You have heard of "show, not tell"? It is apparently okay in Vorin religion for a gay couple to marry and yet how many gay couples do we see in the background over three entire full-length books? Compare that with the no. of background heterosexual couples, start with Hashal and Matal, from WoK. Pathism and Survivorism are supposed to have very different views regarding homosexuality, and we see the two religions come into conflict, there's a gay character situated in the conflict zone and yet we see nothing come from it. We're just told by the author about these religions' stances and that's it. In the first place, we even get this information about how homosexuality is treated across the Cosmere from a WoB and not from the stories themselves. Ranette and Drehy (& his doctor boyfriend) are not just the only gay characters we see, they are the only indication that gay people even exist. We don't see Ranette hanging out with her girlfriend, it's just dropped that she's lesbian. Drehy doesn't say anything nor do we ever see him with his significant other, it just comes up in a discussion. And that scene was very meta. It looked like Brandon was saying "see how cool my characters are with homosexuality?"

theory Specuating on Oathgate Locations (and other stuff)
Honorless replied to TheWadehart's topic in Stormlight Archive
One line crossing both Shinovar and Aimia (is that Akinah?) then on the other side both Vedenar and Narak, with two other lines (Kurth & Rall Elorim) not connecting to other Oathgates? -
The Arcanum and Aether of Night are also great motivators. Anyways! Welcome to the Shard!

really? I thought there were quite a few amusing theories, including the possibility of Hemalurgy and a connection with era 2, beyond the boring, but probably the most likely, Gemmel was just cracked. Also, you don't seem to mind much that many of the responses here on your thread are lighthearted fork battles either? I know that the first one is empty but these are the only threads on the topic, that I could find. I don't see what I did to offend you here: "they don’t inject anything more interesting into the conversation"

^ This is good. Very good.
v This is high quality crem. Or low quality. I’m not sure...

Thanks, Geno! The reddit links that you shared regarding... creative uses of Cosmere magic systems made me look for more
Wasn't disappointed

Ohh you're welcome. I haven't looked for them myself even tho I always keep reminding myself.
Will see right now.

Keep Shezler?

one of the Soothing stations?

I think he can't. Restoration in the Cosmere seems to work via a thing or being's perception of itself.

Hmm... I think White Sand can be counted as a subversion of this trope. The Sand Masters, under Kenton, become less autocratic and more integrated with the government and society of Lossand.

The Vor Games is the only Vorkosigan Saga novel I've read and it has been a very long while. By the fact that you recommended this novel as one with a gay male protagonist, I assume the events that transpire in this book are only loosely connected with the rest of the series and as such do not require much in the way of knowing what's what in the rest of the series? Basically, that it's more of a standalone than part of a cohesive whole of the saga?

Thanks! That WoB is one I haven't seen before. Gotta say I don't agree with Brandon here on his choice of example, Ranette's sexuality was the dominant character trait, as much as her skill at making guns and ammo. Ranette: the gun-toting lesbian

There's a scene where Dalinar asks Stormfather about what appears to be an empty space between Visions. The Stormfather insists that it is no place. But eventually explained the place hosts the minds/souls of objects. Awesome! could you quote or type out the relevant sections?

No, this doesn't come from overzealous progressiveness. Gay rights are very recent and people are still getting killed for being gay, including quite recently in your country, assuming you are American. I do agree with the men's rights and extremist feminism is something people very much talk about. All the way from Judith Butler Avital Ronnell controversy, to the New Zealander congresswoman who told a male congressman to stop "mansplaining", to the controversy regarding an incident of a bar shooting where some men jumped in front of their girlfriends and were shot dead being called "real men", and conscription is horrible. I wholeheartedly support men's rights and that double standards exist which prevent men from accessing a lot of support structures and resources as well as put an ungodly amount social pressure on them. Me being gay doesn't automatically pit me against straight men, though many straight men disagree. Do note that this is meant to sound wry, not inflammatory

I actually have a theory about the Svrakiss: @Iapetus the Titan, here's the story of Odium, or at least as much of it as we know or can infer Rayse was once friends with Hoid. After the Shattering, he took up the Shard of Odium. He wants to be the top dog and to that end has a hitlist. At the top of the list was Ambition. He didn't manage to find Ambition before finding Devotion and Dominion, whom he Splintered and then he stuffed their power into the Cognitive Realm. With Devotion and Dominion, he had the argument that Aona and Skai (the Vessels) broke the oath that they made to settle on separate worlds. Then he found Ambition. Odium and Ambition fought in the space between worlds, Odium ripped chunks of power off Ambition, mortally wounding her. Ambition fled and died elsewhere. Odium arrived in the Rosharan system, possibly on Ashyn since he followed the refugees from there to Roshar. Something happened and allegiances were shifted. Humans turned to Honor and Cultivation, who turned from the Dawnsingers / Parshendi / Singers / Listeners, who turned to Odium. We don't know what happened there, who switched first, what caused it yet. Sometime around here Odium was bound in Braize. Odium starts Investing and Corrupting. Presumably, Voidbinding, Voidspren, the Fused and possibly the Unmade were created around this time. The Heralds are chosen and swear the Oathpact to keep Odium's forces, primarily the Fused from simply returning from death when killed. The deal involves them being sent to Braize upon death or willingly going there and getting caught and tortured. However long they can hold on is how long the break between Desolations last. The spren emulate the Honorblades given to the Heralds by Honor and start granting Surgebinding to humans. At this point all the remaining Singers feel betrayed by the gods and spren. One group of Singers from the Last Legion, calling themselves the Listeners, split off and took shelter in the ruins of Stormseat. Honor starts dying. He slowly passes off his duties and some of his powers to The Stormfather. Somewhere around this Aharietiam happens, 9 of the Heralds abandon the Oathpact. Honor starts raving to the last generation of the Radiants. The Sibling starts to withdraw. The False Desolation. The Unmade, Ba-Ado-Mishram's imprisonment and end of the False Desolation. Presumably, Re-Shephir was also imprisoned around this time. The Recreance, the Knights Radiant abandon their Oaths and spren. Honor finally dies and his Cognitive Shadow merges with The Stormfather.

I'm rather surprised, none of these titles are familiar to me. Thank you, I'll check them out. I've read Gladstone's work before, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. The dude once said that he's very proud to have never written a straight white male character. I'll check out Wayfarer first, I think. Though I will note that I'm looking for gay male protagonists here.
