  1. Ialai said that the names were strange, in languages she didn't recognize. I had originally thought "Mraize" was a Thaylen word as well, but I expect that Ialai would recognize that. Yes, Lraezare shares many similarities, as do specific words in other languages. Again, I wasn't trying to just talk about specific words - I just didn't want to type all of the words. I gave a link to that page now, though.
  2. Not exactly cherry picking - my point was that a significant portion of their words are like that. I just only chose to list a few. All of them are here: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Category:White_Sand
  3. I had the same thought about Lraezare. There is also Berbrath, so I doubt that it is literally a t followed by an h. Something else I was noticing between this was how common vowel sounds like 'ai' and 'ae' are, along with how 'z' seems to be a very common sound in the dayside languages.
  4. When I heard this, my first thought was to see if they might be in a language that we know . . . and of course by that, I mean one that we are familiar with. I searched the coppermind for snippets of native language that are shown in the books, and I found one that actually fits the linguistic patterns of "Mraize" and "Thaidakar" pretty closely - the Taldain languages. The names of people, places and products on Taldain often bear a striking resemblance to those two names. Ais, Taishin, DaiKeen, Diem, zaidon, Lraezare, Sharezan, Skathan, Mraize, Thaidakar . . . What are the odd ones out in that list? Or do they all fit? The resemblance here might just be a coincidence, but the quote above sure sounded like hints towards more cosmere-wide linguistic origins in those names. Thoughts? This coppermind category includes all of the Taldain words: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Category:White_Sand
  5. SA spoilers Inspired by this meme from cremposting.
  6. I agree--that's one of the points I made.
  7. I think I've found a pretty simple solution that, as far as I can tell, fits with the functions of conjoiners and reversers that we have seen, along with Navani's explanations. One of the points brought up was how the spanreeds might take into account cardinal directions, since if direction was only dependent on the rotation of the gemstone, the archer tower designs would not be very practical, since that would mean that they could have pulled gemstones to the side to make the archers go up. However, involving cardinal directions also has issues, not only because spanreed boards are not noted to all face the same direction, but also because it would lead to very odd behavior, especially closer to the poles. The simplest explanation I could think of that solves both of these is that lateral movement is dependent on the rotation of the gemstones, while vertical movement is always relative to the net gravitational force on the fabrial. This way, the only way to move a conjoined gemstone up or down would be to move its corresponding gemstone up or down, solving the issue with the archer towers. This would also allow spanreed boards to be oriented any direction as long as they are level. The other main issue pointed out has been that if the lateral movement of the gemstones was just related to rotation, the Fourth Bridge chull lattice operators could just disconnect their gemstones and turn them around if they wanted to go the ther direction, without any need for aluminum. However, that is not exactly true. If the chull drivers wanted to turn off their gemstones, the pulley operator would have to turn theirs on for a moment, holding the weight of the Fourth Bridge until the chulls were all turned around and reconnected. While that would still work, it would mean that there would be an extended pause in the ship's movement every once in a while. This issue actually solves a different one. Navani talks about how using "aluminum to isolate motion along a plane" was somehow connected to the method by which the chull-pulled gemstones could be temporarily disjoined. While those two things don't seem to be related, the issue that I just pointed out means that it can be. If they are able to confine a gemstone's reaction to vertical movement, the ship can still be held up while the chulls are changing direction, without having to pause and wait for the pulley operators to switch with them in bearing the ship's load. The pulley operators would just be able to bear the load the whole time, and the the two lattices being alternated would only need to take place when they want to change the ship's vertical position, so the chulls don't get lifted into the sky.

  9. This is how we first found Oathbringer's:
  10. Michael Whelan's assistant confirmed that the person on the back cover is indeed Adolin. https://www.tor.com/2020/08/17/behold-the-cover-to-rhythm-of-war-the-fourth-book-in-brandon-sandersons-stormlight-archive/comment-page-1/#comment-878106
  11. https://www.tor.com/2020/08/17/behold-the-cover-to-rhythm-of-war-the-fourth-book-in-brandon-sandersons-stormlight-archive/ This is very similar to the other covers, bit a few interesting things are different. What can we glean from it?
  12. And if there are any obscure ones that are hard to find on Coppermind, you could also put your related ones together on the Cosmere Q&A board.
  13. Actually, I dont think any of those are confirmed. The Memories have been heavily implied to be a resonance. The mood-affecting ability was said to be a magical effect, but it wasn't in the context of resonances. It could easily just be a Lightweaver effect, without being a combination of the surges. The solid illusions thing doesn't have any hard confirmation, and it wouldnt be a resonance anyway. It would just be using two powers in tandem, not an additional "quirk" that goes along with having just those two powers. Windrunners having lots of squires is the only confirmed resonance as far as I can find. Memories have been talked about a lot in the context of resonances, and steel-bubbles have some uncertainty about them in the WoBs we have about it.
  14. I read WoK and WoR in about a week each. I didn't have OB when I read those, but when I got it, I read it in about three days.
  15. The last three words seem to be "...recreation as depicted," if that's helpful. I think your interpretation that it's a signature is likely though, so it's probably not very connected to the text next to it.
  16. It's interesting that when Yalb is thinking about the Alethi queen, he didn't also think about how she was a passenger on his ship--and wasn't one of the three survivors.
  17. We recently got shown some more artwork that will be included in the Way of Kings leatherbound. One of these pages shows how the bridge crews work, and it has some captions written in women's script. Of course, the images we have aren't of the best quality, and we'll surely get higher quality ones later, but when has that ever stopped us? Here are the images we have of the page: Here's what I've been able to translate so far:
  18. That's right. I'm not sure how I forgot about that.
  19. As long as the ship is in the air, the vertical lattice has to be active, or the ship will fall.
  20. The aluminum is also needed to allow for horizontal movement while the ship being held in the air. Otherwise, the chulls would be linked to the cliffs, trying to push the pulleys sideways.
  21. I don't think it's exactly the cardinal directions. It shouldn't operate differently if you activate it near the poles. The directions that the fabrial is tied to should change based on where it is activated. If you take the locations where the two halves of the fabrial are activated, then find the largest circle passing through those points on the planet's surface (ignoring altitude), that is the line that should be treated as the equator.
  22. The groups all start together. The first chunk of the book isn't going to tell us much about the groups.
  23. Yeah, my original post is somewhat confusing, but I didn't mean to come across like I want you to memorize the post--that would be bad. Honestly, I don't even remember all of the points I made in there. There have been a lot of times I've been discussing things in this thread and somebody will convince me on a certain point, and I'll have to look back through my own post to remember why I made the placements I did. Really, the only reason I mentioned that I've covered most of these points in that post is because it's difficult for me to remember my arguments from there, and it will take new a lot longer to respond if I don't know what I'm looking for. About the OB update information being weak evidence, that could very well be true. I'm not trying to take these quotes and present them as absolute truth; I just want to find what the most likely combination is using as much information that I can find. Looking through all of my points, the main weak spot I could find regarding Adolin and Shallan's placement in Group 2 is the assumption that the Group 2 PoVs will both get more than just a viewpoint "here and there," especially in the climax. The "strong" evidence I found for the different points is just strong relative to the rest. If we were going off of concrete evidence only, all we would have to use is the information we've gotten during the late drafts of the book. Really, this is all just speculation, albeit with a lot of references (as many as could find). I don't mean to present it as absolute at all.
