  1. Abe Lincoln kind of did the same thing just FYI. Letting one man take us through a crisis with almost absolute power without him becoming a monarch afterward is kind of foundational to the idea US.
  2. You can request that from the Aether of the night subthread. It is an unedited unpublished work by Brandon.
  3. That seems more of a bond between the fused and the singer body then a bond between the two singers. I do love the idea of a story from the other side. Maybe the only way to do this on Scadrial is with hemalurgy.
  4. I am here. We are here. Let us begin! Pit Dragon Series by Yolen Uplift series by David Brin Circle of Magic (one of the best soft magic systems ever) by Tamora Peirce All of the more recent Thrawn novels by Timothy Zahn Legends of the First Empire by Michael J. Sullivan Old Man's War by John Scalzi A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers I Robot by Isaac Asimov That should be enough for now I read way too much. I am glad it escapes most of the racism and at least some of the sexism that unfortunately keeps me from completely enjoying Card's works and they are pretty good but I feel they could be better.
  5. Yeah but all of what we have gotten can be accounted for by the impressions that the people get from the spirit web rather then the spirit web taking action itself.
  6. In OB while discussing the conditions of the wall guard Kaladin realizes their are lighteyes who have normal jobs but he states that they are still payed better. Pay is based on rank in alethkar.
  7. Perhaps by the Skybreakers. We don't even know if the GB were a thing back then. No but if he was a potential radiant then Skybreakers would be looking in on him.
  8. Lifespren maybe.
  9. Welcome to the shard! Want to tell us about yourself?
  10. No. It would be the Skybreakers. The could have just flown into feaverstone keep and gotten them then since most of them can't use blades stockpiling them makes sense. Cosmere spoilers Your simplistic solution seems rather complicated. I also don't think that the GB are going to do something as stupid as outright lie to Shallan. The only incentive she has for working with them is the information they can provide for her. If that information is compromised then it serves her no purpose and she could just ignore them or tell Jasnah. And we know from WoBs that Hoid thinks very poorly of the GB and he is spending a lot of time around radiants or potential radiants. In fact he pretty much confines his interaction to them if you think about it.
  11. But the Spirit Web does stick around.
  12. Still not in Alethkar. That was in Iri a country we know almost nothing about. It has some common law but I would not consider that a well defined legal system. That seems to have been a court of public opinion and a decision by the king not a formal trail. That was an obviously heinous crime and even then he gets out of it. I would not call that an advanced legal system. Except Shallan has no idea that Skybreakers exist at the time so why tell her about them in the first place? Why not just say that Heleran was also working for them and thereby gain some trust and sympathy? Why not blame Jasnah's murder on the diagram? That puts them basically in the free and clear so far as Shallan is concerned. It might be a necessary thing for them to do when laws do not cooperate. Remember none of them can use shards at all and to find potential radiants they might need agents in places that only people with the status of shardbearers can get into. Risking shards on an ambitious idiot who may loose them if something happens does not sound like a GB move. Nor does Hoid's interest in such a person nor does killing Amaram at all.
  13. When in Azir the legal capital of the world were doing so is probably a must. We have never seen him operate in alethkar which does not have nearly as good a legal system. 1. We are pretty sure this is not an authorized mission. He is ambitious and trying to prove himself. 2. We don't actually know why anyone here is fighting. It might be that Sadeas's soldiers are encroaching on lands not belonging to him and as such can be repulsed by force of arms as invaders. This is the perfect opportunity to get Amaram if you want to and have to follow the law.
  14. The three estates were a political idea that did not exactly or even approximately mach up to the social and economic realities of france at the time. But you still could not gain nearly as much. A good doctor for example could receave a possition at court. However from the readings of Navani's RoW flashback we know that even the kitchens in the capital are staffed with lighteyes. It become more common then for those reasons yes but creative justifications for higher rank were not uncommon either. Renaissance Italy for example was largely plutocratic in terms of governing.
  15. An obsession with justice? Doing his best for the whole of Roshar at the cost of his family? Also Hoid met with him and Hoid has both an affinity for potential radiants and a contempt for Ghoostbloods. First of all Amaram could technically have broken some law that was on the books. Their law code is less then 50 years old and apparently the royal codes are a mess. I can readily believe they could get him on something. Two he was engaging in warefar. As such provided you have enlisted legally to fight for the other side you could be considered obligated to kill an enemy soldier. It seems likely that the Skybreakers have shardblades to spare unlike anyone else. This was probably not an officially sanctioned mission and some one else may have been monitoring his progress. The GB have a lot of people. He might have just been there to monitor the diagram. This seems way more likely. The GBs had a lot of backups when trying to kill Jasnah. Also exactly who was responsible seems to be kind of crazy as both the GB and the diagram claim responsibility. I seriously doubt that Kabsal could have arranged everything so neatly when trying to get close to Jasnah without a degree of luck.
  16. So in the real world I would say they both have PTSD. In the cosmere this manifests as breaks in the spirit web. Breaks in the spirit web make you susceptible to various things from the SR(like gaining magical powers or feeling the pain and suffering you have inflicted on others). Mistborn spoilers
  17. Was that addressed to anyone in particular, meant to be inflammatory or the opposite? I am deeply sorry but in the internet age I can no longer tell the difference.
  18. 100% agree. I kind of want them to just redo all of seasons 1-6 in this style.
  19. Personally I think Dalinar is hearing the ideal of Evi. Remember. Only the cognitive aspect goes to the beyond. The spiritual aspect can stick around for quite some time. Dalinar can see the SR and as such can communicate with Evi's perfect self. The self that is beyond pain or doubt or uncertainty. That is my head cannon anyway. I also think Szeth is doing basically the same. Remember damage in the Cosmere makes you receptive to influences. Szeth is also sort of a returned who have access to the SR. I think Szeth is feeling their idealized hatred for him.
  20. Good update. Sorely needed. I particularly like the color coding.
  21. I like this theory a lot. I would make some modest changes especially to the more Culticationy ones. Perhaps he let her make some modest alterations for some reason?
  22. Not true. He mentions the rank of the lighteyes not the military rank of the person holding it. He also mentions somewhere else I think in OB that even lower Dahn lighteyes are payed better then darkeyes for the same work.
  23. Not as much as you might expect. You could buy noble rank throughout a lot of Europe and commoners did on some occasions rise to higher stations. Also even a could achieve high rank in the church assuming you had good education, university training allowed high social status for doctors and lawyers. Finally wages were still the same for impoverished nobility and normal commoners. There are a lot of misconceptions about how nobility worked.
  24. This both very wise and some amazing foreshadowing.
