  1. That does not tell you which mechanical reaction you would get as you came closer to the outsjirts of the solar system.
  2. In that case how come the Blade she summoned on some occasions did not glow in the Lightweaver colors? Yes
  3. OK, one question. Why did Testament not appear next to Shallan when she was transported from Kholinar to Shadesmar?
  4. I think he was seeing himself, possibly after becoming a Fused. That vision may simply have been a warning of what could have happened had he not refused Odium on Thaylen Field.
  5. Baron Shuden demonstrates this in the very text. He is born in Arelon, yet good at ChayShan. Is that the reasons there is no Teo system? Too much focus on naval matters? Yes, I dimly remember something.
  6. Yes. And those flashbacks made Venli into a usful idiot just doing as Ulim told her to, without making decisions and real research. The idea that the Listeners were in a desparate situation that required Forms of Power was very defensible. A chance to make her more complex than just a fool needing to repent has been lost. And I would have liked to see more Regals. Frankly, the book would have been better without flashbacks. The only really interesting interlude was Sja-Anat's.
  7. Well, for some definition of simple. What exactly is their going back in a hurry supposed to accomplish? Dalinar wants to use none of their group as a champion or a backup. In fact he wants his son and heir to be as far away from a battle he does not expect to survive as possible. Shadesmar is about far enough. And fate and Dalinar have just kicked Adolin in the nether parts. His original mission has become moot. There is no point in recruiting Honorspren to a war that will have been ended before they arrive. Still Adolin and Dalinar are competent officers. They will try to get something out of that mission. Adolin has uncovered extremely important stuff about the Recreance. and aliens and strange new organizations. You don't waste all that calling him home for no good reason just to see his dad fight and possibly lose.
  8. Technically we do not know that. We know that it is reflected in the symbols. But the bulk of a people is likely to be within the borders of the nation. I see no way we could tell those effects apart.
  9. Before we go to psychological explanations, I need to point out that hurting Lift gets you into trouble with the rest of the Knights Radiant the Cultivationspren Cultivation the Azish Not doing that without good reasons is just common sense.
  10. The tower and the crown are also Dalinar's glyphpair. Seeing Urithiru here is picking cherries among the data. It may be Urithiru, but it can also be a lot of other things. Yet the glyphpair of House Sadeas also features a tower. And this is talking about titles.
  11. Villain? What has she done dared to talk somebody who wanted to kill her dared to try diplomacy changed a small group of people who asked for it How horrible and villainous. For what reason would Cultivation make plans that involve most of the Shards turning into her enemies? Now, Hoid does not like her. But I do not get why people like Hoid in this. i am old enough to remember the Cold War. We had a very snarky comment. "We will fight the Soviets until we run out of Afghans." That is essentially Hoid's plan B for Roshar. The Stormlight Archive has many groups of actors who have distinct interests and very few of them can be sorted by good vs. evil.
  12. For now a war is going on and the Singers are ex-slaves, many of whom have a good reason to hate humans. You will get patriots who are ready to sacrifice themselves and you can promise their families benefits. Once the Fused cease the fight against the Radiants, that is over. You need to be suicidal. And they cannot just harvest people. They have to be eager to take in a spirit. Fused inhabit Singer bodies. They are mortal. Within a few decades they will die. Unless the newest Odium finds a loophole and is not bound any longer. And that is his goal.
  13. I am taking the linerty of invoking a specialist demon. @Argent heed my call! He has written the Coppermind's article on Light. Light is a subtype of Investiture. Let's disregard the physical properties of Investiture for now. We thought that Investiture had two properties beyond the physical and the sheer amount: a kind of volatility or type - Stormlight is harder to store than Voidlight, which in turn is harder to store than Breath facultatively Identity - usually Investiture is coupled to an Identity though not necessarily - unsealed metalminds are an established thing And there seems to be some kind of state Investiture can be kinetic or innate Very well, now our dear Navani has identified two more attriutes, at least in the Lights rhythm tone Or has she? The name "pure tones of Roshar" is inaccurate, isn't it? Technically it should be the tones of the Shards strongly invested in the Rosharan system. That is the tones are linked one by one to Shards. Individuals in the Cosmere do have a Spiritweb, innate Investiture, Connections, and Identity. Three of these attributes are variable and alterable, but in principle they do exist. Identity is different. It is unalterable. You can store it, so it is variable, but just altering it is not possible. Now, this leads to a question. Is Identity the spiritual version of tone? Or is it a combination of rhythm and tone? Or has Navani found totally new properties?
  14. There is that. The problem is that "self" is a surprisingly ill defined concept. Of course there are clear concepts in things like copper or aluminium. But take for example Brass. If you touch the Feruchemist you will be warmer. In the case of Connection it is by definition not limited to an individual. If you use it on the most physical level, then OK, you can define whom you glue to whom. Still even there, when Kaladin uses Adhesion on two people touching him, will the y stick to eack other when they touch? If you use it to take a language then what do you take? The medaillon connects you to a nation, but the idea what a nation is and where it is must already come from a third party. For example, do you acquire the local dialect of the area where you switch it on? If you were to don a medaillon on Java would you learn Javanese, Bahasa Indonesia or both? If you don it in Serbian Voivodina in a Hungarian minority village, do you get Hungarian, Serbian or both?
  15. Yes, but the conclusion that a Connector cannot do more is based on a lack of examples. Compounding Connectors have studied their powers for a few decades. Bondsmiths have studied their powers for millenia.
  16. Yes. we do know that Teod was settled by people from Arelon. It seems to be by true ethnicity. Your membership to a people matters, not place of birth. We do know that you can get ChayShan even if you were born to parents living in a foreign land. Borders probably do not matter. The Dor cares about nationality in an ethnic sense. States don't matter.
  17. Thou shalt weigh every word Brandon says. He is better at loopholes than a greazed Skybreaker. He did not deny that Ambition was splintered elsewhere. In fact we were told that Ambition was mortally wounded there, but died elsewhere. And now we know that Mercy was also present.
  18. That makes perfect sense, except for one thing: the Seon If Mraize is low level, what resources are at Iyatil's disposal? I have to ask again. How sure are we that the box Shallan took into Shadesmar was the same box that Mraize had given her? Next to Hoid they seem the best informed. I am afraid I need to point out that he also seems to have been a savior to the Southeners. Sure, he had statues of himself built, but he did help them. When Kelsier met Khrissalla it seemed to me that he internally vowed to never be in a situation of acting without knowing what's going on again. And secondly, he found offworlders to be less than helpful.
  19. Yes. Then you store that, repeat the process and you get 100 times the original amount and so on. The limit is your supply of metal. Well, no. Medaillons can definitely make new Connections. No Southern Scadrian has a Connection to the Elendel Basin. It is unclear whether a true Connector can make arbitrary Connections between third parties, but they are not limited to existing Connections.
  20. I am the true reason Vorinism abhors predicting the future.
  21. Unless they happen to be compunders.
  22. She is not the Lightweaver Herald from her own perspective. She is the Herald originally bearing the Honorblade which gave Lightweaving and Transformation. The stuff with the Knights Radiant is not her idea and the Heralds were apparently not generally thrilled with the idea. You cannot use the Knights Radiant to make conclusions about the person of a Herald. For somebody who has been tortured for thousands of years she is remarkably sane. Why did they support Gavilar's research?
  23. That is exactly the point. With some of the arcane arts the knowledge is the weapon. I also notice that - this is difficult without becoming too political - most nations who decided otherwise, unless big or well connected - got into trouble. Well, in case of scientist what we got is a system that requires cooperation and equipment. Even if you theoretically know how to make nerve gas, doing so with improper equipment will kill you. To an extent we have a situation where supervision prevents that. There are technologies where this is not possible. Hence we will always have teenagers developing malware and hacking systems.
  24. What makes you sure enough about Cultivation being willing to do that to bet a world on it? They had a friendly little chat if I may remind you.
