  1. Still, no sane person would decide to voluntarily become a Shade. Nor could you march Shades through the Cognitive Realm to another world to spy on the Ire. The older Threnodian Shadows must have been sentient or controlled.
  2. Unfortunately, you can slow yourself down with allomancy. That removes energy. And the rules for pushing and pulling do not care whether you accelerate or decelerate.
  3. Only if the Elantrian is unprepared or foolish. Remember that Aons don't have to be drawn into the air. They do work if carved into materials, too. An Elantrian with a few days to prepare for combat would think this through, build armor with Aons on it, he would stitch Aons into his clothing and apply body paint. He would build Aonic weapons even.
  4. The Simple Rules have more consequences. I do not see a way you could run a police service outside fortified cities. There is just no way you could forcibly arrest or threaten a suspect. "Stop or I shoot" is just not viable or even survivable. Which brings us to the question of penal systems. How do you run a prison? You cannot truly disarm anybody on Threnody. Everybody has a virtual suicide vest on. If I am willing to take you with me and there are Shades around, I just hit you hard enough to draw blood and here we go. I would say that Threnody knows no imprisonment as penalty. Fines, outlawry and death only. This goes further. The wards around a place are vital, presuming a place is even warded. Sabotage is far easier and deadlier. In a place without wards a thrown stone can mean mass suicide. Threnodites must have an extremely low tolerance of foolishness, petty delinquency and mental illness. I suspect that such people are driven out into the Forest essentially to die.
  5. Not on First of the Sun. The Meekers read minds just fine. In fact they even project their own thoughts. We know that that ability is found among multiple species. If a fruit tree emits the simulated thoughts of a suitable prey, then predators must interpret those thoughts. A simple life sense does not explain that. Reading the minds of only the minority of prey with gaps in their soul won't do predators any good, let alone allow them to use arcane senses as their primary sense in finding prey. Yes, that is unusual. But their must be something unusual on First of the Sun. The Ones Above must have a reason to want aviars that fiercely. Apparently they are not easy to fool. Aviars produce copperclouds without a bond. Animals hide themselves and their minds under the roosting trees of wild aviars. People on the mainland would just keep as opposed to bond aviars that produce the coppercloud effect, as they think you can have only one aviar.
  6. But he could have just advised them to use electrum rather than atium.
  7. You need control foremost. If an Inquisitor is close by, you will stop allomancing anyway and prepare to scatter and run. Incognito Seekers are a problem. And therefore you must prevent spillage. Otherwise the Steel Ministry can send a Seeker and another Misting and when the Seekers stops sensing their companion, you have located a coppercloud.
  8. Exponential growth without predation. Deer can reproduce just one year after birth. Something must be keeping their populations in check. And what about rodents and other small animals? True.
  9. Yes, meaning she always meant to take the whole body home. Why? For the bounty that is not necessary. The head alone would do. At least 100 years. Too long for a healthy forest. And that raises the next question. How do deer avoid shades during the day? As far as we can tell random animals do not repel shades. Silence specifically keeps pigs. "She'd only discovered the girl because Chesterton had been careful, lining the room with silver dust to protect against shades as he prepared to kill." Exactly. Why? Does she like carrying large load through nocturnal forests? Hardly. She does so, because it is the only option. Yes, the point was the connection between her way of killing and butchering animals. The book only says the shades kill. We have however this: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/9-calamity-philadelphia-signing/#e7445
  10. If you take only the type of the crystal structure, that is correct. If you include the distance between the atoms, it is no longer correct.
  11. Nazh knew about Shadows at the time of the Lord Ruler's death. That is about 300 years before Shadows in the Forests of Hell. At that time the Forest was discovered about 100 years ago. Hence the Shadows Nazh referred to cannot be the Shades.
  12. Yes, though Roshar also has Aimians.
  13. That was after she regained the body. It does not explain the initial planning. That still does not explain how a Forest can grow if all herbivores can reproduce unchecked. Ehm, no. Chesterton had the silver it took to keep the Shades out. That is a possibility, but it limits you to targets that are worth the expenditure. If the blood is not properly secured, carrying the corpse will not help you either. You will just die next to it. She could just wait or ward it with silver. She does not do so because she cannot be seen with the corpses. She could avoid that by cutting off the heads. A head will fit into a sack. She does not plan to do so. Therefore cutting off a head in the Forest is suicidal. Hence butchering an animal in the forest is suicidal. People can anyway. You just have to ask where they were seen last. Again, do the logic. Silence tracks those people for a long time. Why? So that they do not vanish near her waystop. If they vanished without a trace, that all makes no sense. Nobody would know where they vanished, just when. She could give them poison which would make them drop dead within a short time after they have gone. On the contrary Silence depends on their camps eventually being found, far away from her waystop. If you die by withering, you become a shade. The Shades have killed the predators. Hence they are shady now.
  14. People have been asking how magic system would impact technology and social life. We have looked at that question from a positive angle. But there is obviously a world with a very negative angle: Threnody No fast movement: How do you run a railroad at night? Road traffic at night is also neigh impossible No kindling fire: percussion caps are impossible - you could do these ancient guns that actually use a burning match a flame thrower should, however, be tolerated - you have a pilot fire. You could build a gun based on that internal combustion engines are right out - no cars, no diesel railway engines / steam engines and jets should be possible, though if sparks count as kindling fire, even electricity is impossible you need controls for stuff that could make sparks - 'my home is my castle' is not possible on Threnody No shedding blood of another forget modern surgery forget modern dentistry even a syringe is playing with death road traffic is impossible. You would not survive many accidents. It looks to me like you'd have a stark contrast between country and city with a highly regimented society.
  15. I think the premise is wrong. Sanderson wanted to build a believable antagonist. Why would people follow an evil religion? Shu-Dereth is the classical religion of an empire. Our perception of empires is wildly unfair. Rome good, Persia bad, China undecided, Caliphate bad, Alexander good ... Why? Elantris shows a believable conflict because both sides have sensible reasons.
  16. She will still leave a camp site. And that is vital. If they are killed at unknown places somebody may track the last waystop they visited. If they have no need to do so, this is less likely. So she may just as well leave most of a corpse. Deer, however, startle easily. And then they run. Fair enough, but it makes the case against hunting. Chesterton is a wanted man with a price on his head. His standards of safety are unlikely to be universal. Still he is bound by economics. If his loot is worth less than the silver he has used up, he will go broke. Again, that makes the case for planning to leave the bodies where they are till dawn. Again, this makes a case for planning to leave the bodies where they are for a few hours until at least dawn. The blood would have dried. And day time is safer in general. As Silence is well aware of that, you need to explain why she tried to carry back the whole body immediately. I doubt the ghost of the deer would agree with that sentiment. And if have to point to the contradiction in that statement and the other statements. Either you keep to the Simple Rules, always, or you shed an animal's blood. While this is technically true, I have to point out that if you are carrying the corpse and enrage the Shades, there won't be a bounty either. And you would be too shady to collect the bounty. And what is likelier to enrage the Shades, a dead body safely wrapped up and cooling down or two women walking through a dark forest toting said body?
  17. They have a fabrial that can partially discharge a gem. It is mentioned in relation to a feast Elhokar was giving, which somebody wanted a dim sphere for. It is reasonable, but not confirmed, that they can do the opposite.
  18. A rather famous amateur theologician from Scadrial wondered why you would pass on if you don't have to. For most people the question is academic. One world, however, inverts that. On Threnody everybody has to answer that question. So what do you have to lose? The old-fashioned answer a Threnodite would give is: your immortal soul. Shades wither away slowly and it looks like the dissolution of a Cognitive Shadow who has refused the call of the Beyond means annihilation. That would make becoming a Shadow a coward's choice. Yet Nazh reveres those who became Shadows. Why? And here speculation begins. Silence seems to form some sort of bond with her late grandmother. Shadows may have given Threnodites powers powered by their own substance. Sort of the ultimate sacrifice for family and country. Dare you imagine the horror they must have felt at the news of a continent full of Shades of people believed to be safely in the Beyond? Can we assume that the reaction would have been an epedemic of nihilism and neigh everybody elderly choosing to become a Shadow? And even more speculatively, what if those people turned Shadow refused to wither away and found a way to posses the living?
  19. Yes. But what does that mean? You have to adapt to your environment. Casually lighting a pipe in the Forests is also not an option. I doubt it. The state of the Forest looks healthy. And deer will run at night. That is not compatible with the crossbow dropping incident. Even accidentally spilled blood would break the rules. Then why not wait for daylight?
  20. Poisoned Shallan? That is not Soulcasting. Kelsier and Khrisella do. So does Captain Ico.
  21. Well, yes, but it did not work in the CR. She could not have healed somebody in Shadesmar with it for example. Gravitation is indispensable. But manipulating wind, like he did to protect people from a storm, also helps in flight. So he may use it in addition.
  22. Surges we have seen to work: Gravitation Illumination Maybe seen to work: Adhesion (depends on how Kaladin flew) Seen to have failed: Soulcasting [Jasnah's deleted scene] Anything on anything else? Do they also work on native elements of the CR? Can you use Gravitaion or Adhesion on a Spren? Were the Fused using Gravitation whom Kaladin fought bodyless Cognitive Shadows or ordinary Fused coming from Roshar?
  23. Well, translated. What they use themselves is less clear. Two issues: The Azish empire not standardising units? Extremely unlikely. Vorin priests. They teach stuff and they have an international organization. Different units in their textbooks would be a hassle. An official Vorin system next to informal regional feet seems likely.
  24. That sounds fishy. I need to channel Jasnah: Where is her armor?

Nale has no problem with his bond. Two questions: Can Odium just recycle a spren? Why did he leave the Unmade so much autonomy then?
