  1. We have similar imaginations I think we should establish some base restrictions. As I said in a previous post, I don't think any spirit tampering should effect the Physical Realm. I couldn't take a rock and change it's spirit to make it transform into a sword that burns people, but I could change the rock so if anyone touches it they will get burned. It would still be a rock. In practice, what are people picturing using enchantment for? I was thinking it would mostly be small, unimportant stuff.... Like spanreeds and heating fabrials. Useful but not world shattering. I guess weapons could be made but how powerful? I'm not really interested in nightblood like beings springing into existence. (With natural magic it's possible, but wouldn't be under anyone's control.)
  2. That's what I thought we had. The way we had it working (to my understanding) was that you could manipulate a spirit web's connections by "moving them around" (This is kinda vague) but not "create" a new spirit altogether.
  3. I feel like it fits best in Ritual. Innate could still have something like what you suggested.... I just don't want Innate to be a weaker version of Ritual.
  4. I thought we had agreed enchanting was part of Ritual. That you were moving connections around to create enchantments.
  5. So..... What we have.... (Tell me what I get wrong.) There are three main branches of magic. Ritual. This one allows anyone with enough knowledge to make changes to the world around them through symbols that are written. This is the most restrictive of the three. People can only make changes within the same realm. What I mean by that, is that you can move physical atoms around the Physical Realm to form new molecules and move connections around the Spirit Realm to form new connections. You can not cross between the realms. You couldn't change an objects cognitive aspect to affect it's physical one, but you could move the atoms of the object around to change it in the Physical Realm. Innate. (Much debate....) People are born with an ability. Natural. This one requires many people to have an noticeable affect. Natural magic is a result of the increased entanglement of the Cognitive Realm and the Physical Realm. It allows people to change the world around them through "group think". When enough people believe something, the world will change to match their beliefs. This allows for horrid monsters, nasty spirits and the occasional god to form. There are few/no restrictions on this system as there are few/no restrictions on the human imagination.
  6. Sam smiled. "You want to do some weapons practice? Or maybe eat something. I never did get that coffee."
  7. I like that too! Both options seem more interesting to me.
  8. Which is just one idea that hasn't been approved yet. Personally I think "speaking spells" to be rather unoriginal...... Ritual is already a spell based system..... Let's do something else with Innate. Natural is super loose so what @ShadowLord_Lith is suggesting would be a much better "bridge" system.
  9. What I thought we were talking was that they would be able to mimic Ritual without the spells....... @ShadowLord_Lith I like that idea! It might be too hard to differentiate it from the Natural magic though. Once we decide on a fuel we could make it that they would still need fuel while true Natural magic wouldn't.
  10. Sam eyed the two. @Arky-boi
  11. "Because I sound bored. When are we going to do something?" Sam said with an eyeroll. @Jaywalk
  12. "Peachy." Sam said, then elbowed Nael.
  13. "Sore. You?" Sam asked inspecting her tattoo.
  14. I'm a little confused by this. Up to this point we've been saying that Innates would be able to replicate ritual magic without all the prep work. (At least as far as I know.) How are you picturing them working?
  15. Idea #1. People draw power directly through their spirit web connections with others. Basically you would be stealing power from all your best friends/family/admirers/etc. I think this could be another factor in becoming a god. The more people who look up to you or know you well, the more power you have to draw on. This would have the downside of killing all those that you're close to if you draw too much power form them. I like this idea because of what it would do to society. No one would want to be friends with magic wielders as that could lead to their deaths but at the same time they would want their services. (This could also explain why they aren't too scientifically advanced with Ritual magic.) In a world like this I believe magic wielders would be hunted/hated in most parts of the world. Idea #2 Investiture grows in the form of a weed. The weeds grow fast and are very invasive, killing most other plants. It's abundance doesn't make life any easier, however, because it 'dies' (loses its magic properties) within a few seconds of being picked. People would have to carry planters with them if they needed a reliable power source or they would have to trust to luck that there would be some growing where they need it. I like this idea because it creates some difficult logistics to work with while also providing plenty of fuel.
  16. I LOVE the idea of an organization running around trying to stop superstition! My computer didn't show me your post until after I posted..... So I think we're on the same page! Now that I see what you guys mean about followers gaining powers, I like it. I agree that it should only work with the ascended ones.... I think they would probably be more powerful at that point? Or be less well defined, allowing them greater flexibility. I fully agree that the gods would be bound by their followers faith. Basically they would be trading some/a lot of their freewill for power.... a trade off not all people would want! I think we're all on the same page..... I really have to go to bed (work.... blah...) but will check in tomorrow.
  17. Ritual magic is like programing, right? Unless I've completely missed how it works (which is possible), It's the magic that would be capable of creating spells. I thought how we had it working (at least for enchanting) was that you needed to take the spirit web from something like a plant, break it down to raw investiture, then reprogram it to do whatever you wanted. (So long as you have enough investiture.) I feel like reprograming a spirit web would be exactly what it's best at. Ahhhhhhh............ I see what you're saying. You're thinking of them like mini shards(correct me if I'm wrong) while I was thinking of them more like Returned. In my mind they would still be in the PR and basically human..... they just wouldn't age and be very hard to kill. I was picturing more like folk heroes made incarnate or like the Greek gods. In the flesh with a few more perks. They would have special abilities bestowed upon them by whatever the people believed..... which could be anything! Soldiers who saw their general fighting with them and slaying tons of enemies might start believing that he had the strength of a hounded men. As the belief took root the general would find his strength increasing. As he performs even better in battle with the increased strength, the rumors would increase and say that he could kill foes with a touch..... and so on and so forth until he's worshipped as a god! (although many wouldn't actually make it all the way to godhood..... a simple thing like a forced march could convince them that there's nothing special about him after all) I would be fine if you guys want to go with the mini shard idea but was more or less picturing something like the above. Peoples' beliefs are often strange... so we could have it both ways if we wanted.
  18. I feel like this is exactly what ritual magic would be able to address. In the alchemy/enchanting you're reprograming something to change/enhance it, which is what I thought we had said was what Ritual magic did. I'm not sure I'm following..... So you're saying that if people believed in someone enough they themselves would gain powers? I don't know why they would..... After all it's everyone's group faith in a person/thing/spren that's creating a special effect at all. So why would the strength of your individual faith give you power? I feel if we do it that way the world would clutter up fast with powered people.... which in my opinion is a bad thing.
  19. I think that only the god would be able to perform the impossible. Unless everyone believed their god was capable of bestowing magic powers to her followers..... but then it would be up to the god who got what abilities. I would think that you would have to have an entire nation believing in you before you had enough power to give to others. And the people would have to believe the god was capable of giving faithful powers. What do you mean by 'ascend'? I was thinking no matter how powerful a person became they would still have a physical body... Unless they started without one of course.
  20. I don't think the faithful should get anything besides the god they create. For instance: a city, that's about to be attacked, puts all it's trust in one person to protect them. That person expands in power and knowledge, but now is forced to protect the city at all costs. The people get their protector, the new god gets his power, and if the people puts their faith in the wrong person then it's everyone's loss. I think we could have it both ways with the person/spren debate. People can rise to godhood but so can objects. If everyone believed a tree was a god, I think the tree would start gaining sapience over time. With the 'physical manifestations of belief' it could be things like..... People read in a book about a long gone hero, but they start believing in her anyways. If enough people believe in the same version of the person, the hero would "resurrect". It wouldn't be them...... not even their cognitive shadow. Just a representation of what people believe that person was like. I guess I want it both ways!
  21. ^ What he said. I think we should leave Ritual magic as largely non-combative. You could use it to enchant weapons, or perhaps set traps, but I think we should leave the more combative stuff to the Innates. With the Natural magic..... are we saying it would be a very passive thing? Like basically part of the setting and no one actually manipulates it? Or are we saying it's something everyone knows about and is actively manipulating? Also, how fast does it work? I would imagine the landscape changes would happen slowly (like years) but what about other things? If I wanted red hair.... if I got my whole family thinking about me with red hair, could the change happen over a week?
  22. Oh yeah oops! Will edit.
  23. I like it! My only thought being that it would require them to be fairly scientifically advanced, but that's not a bad thing. Now what about the innate system? Many people were saying it would mimic the ritual system but wouldn't need all the prep. So in this case what would the innate magician do? Would he be able to combine things at an atomic level to form many different things or would he only be able to combine Oxygen and Hydrogen to form water?
  24. Here's an idea...... What if everyone in this world were born with a rune/symbol that they could use? I'm not saying everyone would have a unique symbol but rather that not all people can use all symbols. The ritual magic would therefore need a lot of different people to make it work. Let's say were using the English alphabet (just an example). I was born with the ability to use the letter "R" not so useful..... However if I got together with others, we could chain our letters together to form a word. I could combine My "R" with some other's "F" "I" "E" to make the word Fire. boom suddenly we ,working together, could light a fire. If there were people who were born with say an Exclamation mark they could add that to the others to make "fire!" A more powerful spell. Since we would be using symbols (Usually that means there's hundreds of symbols compared to the 26 we have) it would be harder to get dramatic results. Now some people would be born with multiple symbols making them more useful for rituals.... more variety. The Innates could be those who have enough letters to form their own word. They would have no need for others. Or the Innates could be something else completely.
  25. Mostly agree. I think the Innates should still need fuel.(Though maybe they could have greater efficiency.) I agree that I don't want the ritual magic to be able to create things out of thin air. If they could enchant items that would be cool. (and have the darker implications. "What happens when you use the magic on people. can you enchant them like I did this battleax?")
