  1. Me too I'm really jealous for everybody who has the book already.
  2. @ Elwynn: I see that we agree and I apologize for having misunderstood your previous posting. And though I think that the "True Desolation" hasn't begun yet, I might be wrong (it's only my gut feeling that says that we see the advent of that event). Therefore I don't refuse your thoughts. Get well soon!
  3. Though I think that I'm not the right person for an advice I'll do so: Read through!!! (I'm not the right person, because I like Nynaeve and although Vivenna though both of them are not my favorites.)
  4. Now you really nonplussed me. Thank you very much. I, uhm, ran out of books so to say and was looking for a challenge too, so I took BS's books in English. Now I'm kind of stuck with them (especially TWoK) and looking for information I found this forums. Now I dare participate here but I'm not really generally good in English. One big advantage of this internet-things is that the dictionary is quite comfortable to use . Hm, that idea about Hierocracy and corruption is nice. Then, naturally, the question is: Did the fall of the hierocracy, too, reverse the corruption? As a side note: there is a lot of stuff around BS's books that "boggle my mind".
  5. The first epigraph is given to the Prologue. The date of this epigraph is the "first day of the week Palah of the month Shash of the year 1171 ... (271) [6-5-1]". But the assassination of Gavilar happened in 1167 not in 1171. And if this dates don't correlate, why should the dates in other epigraphs? The arrival of the Heralds (in our case: of one Herald, Taln) seems to predict that a Desolation is coming. I personally think that the "True Desolation" hasn't begun until now (now = the end of The Way of Kings).
  6. It seems that the naming of the Shin people follows down the mother- and the father-line if one is female or male. Szeth-son-son-Vallano means that Vallano is/was the grandfather of Szeth. Szeth-son-Neturo means that Neturo is Szeth's father. Szeth goes with his grandfather's name because he wants his father not associated with him and his faults. There are two kinds of Aimians: Dysian Aimians (the ones, Wit mentions in Ch. 54) and Siah Aimians, such as Axies (I-5). Hmmm, the missing statue is of a female Herald, but the person asking Szeth is male? ...
  7. Yes, you're right, I'm German. In TWoK it's said that such palindromes are the most 'holy' names in Vorinism (Laral, Urithiru, Shin Kak Nish, Sela Tales ...). I personally am sure that Elithanathile doesn't refer to Odium.
  8. Apparently nobody but me wondered about this Trailman's flute. Though I like Satsouni's description I'm not really sure about it, because Hoid gives the flute to Kaladin and wants him to keep it and learn how to play it. Hoid did not tell Kaladin to give it to Sigzil (what would be more logical). Maybe sometimes we will learn more about it.
  9. Thanks Satsouni and Binnut. (Blame me, I never think about google.) Though it might be an interesting question what herd of cattles Hoid led to which destination I think Satsouni's definition is more exactly. (And sorry, I wanted some open-minded ideas and therefore I intentionally didn't give the whole quote.)
  10. The term "Parshendi" was created by King Gavilar's stormwardens: Ha! Ryshadiums. (Sorry, I could not resist.) I was under the impression that the "master of the highstorms" is Jezrien, who is a Herald of the Almighty. Wouldn't that contradict your idea? I think Jasnah wouldn't agree with you here; I personally think it's not No offense intended.
  11. It's a word that is found once in The Way of Kings.
  12. I'm wondering what a "Trailman" is. I didn't find that word in my dictionary. In the German book it's translated as "Pfadsucher" what I would (re-)translate as "path-searcher". Can anybody explain to me what a "Trailman" is? Thank you in advance.
  13. As for the chasmfiend-development I'd like to point to the fact that the chasmfiend we saw in Chapters 12, 13 and 15 was a fully grown chasmfiend. I know that isn't contrary to your point, I just wanted this fact added. Mentioning Dalinar you refer to this quote? I've never had the impression that Dalinar thought he was slaying a god or gods when killing chasmfiends. It's just the fight against such an enormous creature, the fight and the win. That Elhokar referred to the chasmfiend as a "god" may have its reason in Gavilar's reports: And are we sure that the gemhearts out of chrysalises and that chasmfiend are infused? I might have missed this information.

    Chronology

At first I want to point out that I don't know about physics and rotations and revolutions and these things. My personal question isn't the comparison between Rosharian minutes/hours/days/years and our own. I take the measurements given in the book as *is* and don't think about similarities or differences to our real life measurements. Aside from this: I don't have any more evidences about my "timeline" than you have, CheeseNinja. I've tried to work through TWoK -- as I said in a former posting -- from another perspective than you. And, until probably someday there is WoB about the timeline (we can still hope ), I'd say we stay with our conclusions. If somebody other than the both of us has more ideas, hopefully (s)he tells us. Until that I'll stay with my conclusion that from Chapter 2 to 75 it's more than 2,5 Rosharian months (more likely around 3,5 Rosharian months). (No harm meant )

    Chronology

That question about how much time went by from Kaladin's arrival at the Shattered Plains to Chapter 75 doesn't let go off me (without counting the flashback sequences, the prologue, Chapter 1 and the Epilogue, and also excluding the Interludes but not Szeth'). I've thought about this question and I (though I hate doing such things) tried to make an overview (but the result* maybe a bit confusing for everybody but myself ). And I was hinted at the following quote from TWoK: This comes from Chapter 58. Dalinar saved Sadeas in Chapter 56 (not far ago), but: Dalinar saved Elhokar's life in Chapter 13 (which is the same day as Chapter 12 and 15). So that chasmfiend-hunt had been "a few months" prior to Chapter 58. I'm persuaded that the time for all characters runs parallel. I'm also persuaded -- without any evidence again -- that the highstorm that occurs in Chapter 11 is the same highstorm that is mentioned in Chapter 12, so it's the point in time shared by all characters in TWoK. In my previous post I tried to show that Kaladin spent at least two month on the Shattered Plains. Given the additional information from Adolin in Chapter 58 that is not enough time. IMHO the time span I'm thinking about is 2,5 months to 3, perhaps 3,5 months, but not more. And I believe that we accompanied all characters in this time. Is this understandable? And: That there is sort of a chronology in the chapters is seen with the assassination of the Veden king. It happens in I-9 and Navani tells Dalinar in Chapter 61 that she just heard it that day. * there are 3 lines for each chapter: 1. line means i.e. "5 years ago" 2. line means i.e. for Chapter 1 "47/51" -> Ch 1 == Ch 47 == Ch 51 (same day) 3. line means i.e. 5 + 5 days (5 days after Chapter 5) And I've done some random notes around
  16. I'm sorry I left you alone on this <snarky sarcasm>important</snarky sarcasm> topic. I'm grateful for your replies and have learned quite a bit too. Though I see, that not everything has to have a magical background, I've got the idea that Ryshadiums may be bound/tied to a sort of cultivation-spren that makes them to something more than normal horses. It's not only that they feel the needs of their chosen riders but they, too, re-act to that impressions and behave more attentive than normal horses. Unfortunately we don't know whether the other few people that ride Ryshadiums are Shardbearers like Dalinar and Adolin but given that Ryshadiums are bigger and stronger: Thus they are better suited for bearing a Shardbearer. As for were the horses on Roshar came from: I think they were cast out of the Tranquiline Halls together with mankind.
  17. I see, that my OP might be kind of "rude" and short. But there are hints that a Ryshadium is more than a knight's warhorse. TWoK Ch. 12 TWoK Ch. 15 TWoK Ch. 18 This led me to the question in my OP.
  18. I sometimes wonder if the "bond" between a Ryshadium and his rider will come up with a deeper, special meaning. Will Gallant stay with Dalinar?
  19. As for the spren-question I can't find a quote for this, too. The only one I could find that has a relation is this: Perhaps somebody has more luck in finding something?
  20. I'm fairly sure BS's statement wasn't only about Honorspren, but I can't find the exact quote, only another thread where this is mentioned: If I understand the term "constant warfare" right this is a very, very, very old problem on Roshar. TWoK Chapter 60 Dalinar's vision with Nohadon: (emphasizes mine) If this is a hint on "constant warfare" and if the beginning of "constant warfare" is a hint for Honor's death, I fear he died very long ago. The nations Nohadon mentions are not known so I think he lived prior to the existence of the Silver Kingdoms. Dalinar is sure that this man was Nohadon, the author of that in-world-book "Way of Kings" and that he may have founded the Knights Radiant or at least that "Way of Kings" became kind of a guide for the KR. A theory of mine as a side note: My gut feeling says that the formation of the ten Silver Kingdoms was concurrently to the foundation of the ten Orders of the KR and that each of the Silver Kingdoms was subservient for/became home of one of the ten Orders of the KR with Urithiru as a center for all. * (see edit below) But back to when Honor died: My gut feeling says, this happened far later (my bet is on the Day of Recreance). I'm fairly sure that the Hierocracy was a "consequence" of the Day of Recreance and therefore, sorry Vortaan , I'm sure that the Sunmaker and the War of Loss weren't concerned with Honor's death in any way. Edit: * Ooops, I forgot that Nohadon claimed he went from "Abamar to Urithiru". But I think that don't necessarily contradicts my idea because Urithiru could have already existed and had become the center of the KR and the Silver Kingdoms after Nohadon's live.
  21. It's Tanavast and I didn't think about what happened to his body. As for Mistborn: We saw this bodies because "we" (the readers) witnessed their deaths so we "saw" their bodies but apparently Tanavast died a few years before The Way of Kings.
  22. No, Dalinar is the person in the front (for more see Windrunner's spoiler a few posts above). The cover is a scene from TWoK itself.
  23. Ahh, another post in this thread . I'll read it immediately. That direct link is enough to "mitigate the pain" . Yeah, but sometimes one gets the link and without bad thoughts gives it even if it's a special post that is meant. I hope the " " made it clear that my threat of spanking was more a bit mocking you. Edit (after reading that specific post): I'll reply here because necro-ing that old thread seems more wrong to me. I see that there might be witnesses but though the knowledge of the assassination of the king of Jah Keved came to the Shattered Plains (Navani knew about it), I'm not really sure whether we can think of spreading informations like it's used iRL (radio, TV, internet ...). Such a spanreed-communication is a bit more restricted (only my thought). @witnesses On the one hand there should be survivors. TWoK Prologue: But on the other hand: TWoK I-9: Gavilar was assassinated 6 years ago, but there might be records about this. But the "younger" murders? I'm not really sure. But you make an interesting point: If word is spread about Szeth and arrives Kaladin, he may remember this dream and that may make him investigate and come to conclusions that might give Kaladin an advantage. But this is all babbling and speculating.
  24. There was an interesting thread about that topic not so long ago . I may add a -- hopefully not previous answered -- question: Tanavast was Honor's *physical embodiment* as Rayse is Odium's? So "killing Honor" means that (Odium made) Rayse kill Tanavast (Honor)? Did the killing of the body the Splintering of Honor or had Odium to make further efforts to Splinter Honor after Honor's body was dead? Is this understandable? edit: Hitting the send-button I remembered that I forgot something else. There's an idea in my brain (I'm quite sure it's not my idea but I've read it somewhere else): Might the death/Splintering of Tanavast/Honor have caused the Day of Recreance?
  25. Hoser, you need some spanking . Though that linked thread is interesting to read your posting is no 125 on page 7 (if it's the only one, I gave up reading around post no 220 then).
