She’s a little young right now but if we say it will take time for this to become reality then I could see Arianna Greenblatt as Spensa.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Philomath replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When casually scrolling through my Facebook feed, I came across this picture post by NatGeo and thought “This looks like something right out of Stormlight Archives. What is going on?” Turns out it is a Thai tattoo form called Sak Yant done by monks with a lot of symbolism. Beautiful really. And they look just like glyphs. And then, since the Alethi have a lot of Asian influence, you wonder how much Brandon and the Dragonsteel team knew about this or may have been influenced by it when designing glyphs. -
How characters are described vs how the appear in your head.
Philomath replied to ChetLee's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Okay here’s a new one for me. I was just reading the coppermind article on Lopen and it said he was in his twenties. *mind blown* I don’t know how I missed that. I honestly pictured him as older. I basically thought he was like the one armed Latino version on either the pirate with no tongue from the first Pirates of the Caribbean or the “boo box” pirate from Hook. I have no idea why I thought of him that way, that’s just the way he appeared. -
Can Hoid jumping into a chasamfiend’s mouth count? Even though he wouldn’t die, to everyone else watching it would have seemed very Darwin Award worthy. Also the Alethi captain who abused Herdazian women, got caught, and agreed to wrestle the hog with the arrogance of not knowing anything about other countries and cultures.

How characters are described vs how the appear in your head.

Kelsier always has black hair when I picture him. I know he’s blonde. I can picture Marsh blonde and I know they look a lot alike, but he still always has black hair. But I also have a hard time really visualizing characters so that’s the only one I can think of right now. -
Okay. Just have to say I am excited because I got both WtCCs before they did. And that never happens. But in all seriousness, another excellent episode. The Dalinar Kholin family is my favorite. I love them all. Following up from last time, Evi is the best. I am super grateful for her influence on all of them, but she deserved better for herself. I loved how you pointed out how Alethi society shaped them as a family. I actually think a podcast on Alethi culture and the Vorin church would be interesting. I also liked everything you said about their relationships with each other. And everything about Renarin. So basically I loved the whole thing.

I grew up in Utah and currently live in Utah, but the only other place I have lived is Nebraska. It was a good place. I think it is cool that those are both places Brandon has lived too. -
What Shardic Intent Would You Be?
Philomath replied to Philomath's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I guess I’ll answer my own question now. I love how all of these have been about knowledge and learning so far. Things like that are my second choice. But if I were to pick right now an Intent it would be Compassion. I decided that if I were to invest in a world, the magic would manifest in ways that would be beneficial to helping others. And it would be a magic that anyone on the world could learn. Because what is more compassionate than teaching or giving someone the skills they need to take care of and better themselves? And if anyone in world created a religion based on me, its only tenant would be “Do Good.” -
So I was listening to a great NPR show the other day with guest Brene Brown. At one point she was talking about Core Values. That got me thinking about what my core values would be and I thought that they sounded a lot like Shardic Intents. So here is a list she has of different values. Some of them don’t really seem like Intents much and of course it isn’t a comprehensive list. http://www.balancingwell.com/uploads/2/2/0/6/22063438/exercise_valueslist.pdf But if you Ascended to a Shard, what Intent would you want to have? And if you want to add what it would look like if you invested in a planet that could be fun too.

Just saw a sign while stopped at an intersection that said “No Ramen, No Life” And I thought that must be how Hoid feels. -
I suppose this theory is possible but I am not convinced. Most if not all of the Vessel names we know came from their own stories or a WoB. (I’m unsure about Bavadin/Autonomy) Also, Scadrial was created by Ruin and Preservation. Yes it was modeled after Yolen, but I would be very surprised if they taught the people Yolish religions and traditions. Or would mention their Vessel companions for that matter. I would assume the Larsta religion to be purely a Scadrian thing. I suspect Cultivation’s name will be found in SA or given by Brandon.
-
That makes sense. But depending on what they are called as a double Shard, I could still see them as being meddlesome or conquering. One thing I see them as combined is Zeal. And zealots can be a little crazy, pushy, and scary at times.
-
Here are my thoughts on this. With the discovery of the Southern Continent and Medallions, technology is about to explode on Scadrial. And we also know there is a planned sci-do trilogy. I think space-faring people are the last thing Autonomy would want as it runs the risk of them discovering and meddling in her autonomous worlds. If I remember correctly, she has cut off access to Taldain. Maybe she views her planets and people as things that must remain autonomous from all others. Therefore Scadrial is a huge threat. (And possibly Sel. Isn’t there a WoB that says they are the most advanced technologically. Could be a reason Autonomy may have aided Odium in destroying D&D like some theorize.) That being said, I am not opposed to Trell being someone other than Autonomy. I don’t know one way or the other. All the evidence just seems pointed that way for now. Edit: Just wanted to add in that the only other likely candidate for Trell I see would be Dominion. But that is a long game plan that leaves us with getting few answers from The Lost Metal. But would explain why the Elantris sequels would need to be done before MB Era 3. (If this is the case, then I have some other theories in my head about other things Dominion would be up to. I’ll see if I can coherently our then together at all.)

What can a Copper Misting or Similar Aviar Block?
Philomath replied to Philomath's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That would be pretty crazy if true. I like it. And I knew Seekers would be able to detect the rhythms. I forgot that the Surges are essentially manipulations of the laws of physics that govern Roshar. So it makes sense that it wouldn’t be blocked by a Smoker since it is a physical effect not a mental one. Thanks. -
So we know Copper Mistings can stop someone from sensing those around them with Bronze and also stop themselves from being influenced by emotional allomancy. Some Aviar do something similar. We also know Mraize has an Aviar on Roshar. I don’t know what type of Aviar he has, but could one stop you from being tricked by Illumination? Does Illumimation work on the mind or the eyes?

Reading some other threads about Tien made me wonder this. We’ve talked about other characters like Renarin being on the autism spectrum, but has anyone else thought Tien could be too? He always felt that way to me.
-
I didn’t know they could hear them from the spiritual realm. That is cool. And thanks @Calderis for the quote of Eshonai “hearing through” one of Thude’s rhythms. That was something I was curious about. If they could hear a rhythm as falsely attuned. I’m sure it is similar to if you know someone well you can tell when they say one thing but are hiding another.
-
So the Listener Rhythms work a lot like expressing feelings and emotions. But the Listener can also consciously attune a rhythm as well so it isn’t just a reflection of how they really may be feeling. So do they actually have to feel a little of that feeling to attune said rhythm or is it a really good way to lie to yourself? Can another listener, sensing your rhythms tell when you are at tuning a rhythm that is incongruous to what you may really be feeling?
-
I don’t have ebooks so I can’t directly quote this on here but there is a really great quote from MB:SH where Like I said. No direct quote but those words are for sure what he thinks and uses himself. I thought that seemed to transfer well to the situation on Roshar. Especially since Rosharans would
-
I feel like Tien wouldn’t need to be hiding deep dark secrets or even unhappy secrets or lies. I almost wonder if his optimism and joy is a “lie” or at least is at odds with his family’s situation as he grew up. Him thinking “my family is perfect” or “we have each other and that is enough” would be a contradiction to the fact that his family struggled and didn’t always have enough. And his “truths” wouldn’t need to be as dark as Shallan’s. They just have to be profound and about self discovery. One of his truth’s could be “I love my family deeply despite them giving more for Kaladin than me.” Or “I value beauty over function.”

Nope and nope. This character is clever. -
I think the thing that Jasnah will struggle with as queen is that people will still argue and not agree with her despite her logic and frankly being the smartest person in the room. She can deal with a little lack of respect for herself personally when people think she’s a heretic. It’s not personal for her. Same with her scholarly pursuits up until now. But as queen trying to make the best decisions for a nation and a world, she will not like that people won’t listen. Or that they won’t accept her decisions as the “best” course of action.
